I saw this show at the Duluth Arena in Duluth, MN in 1982. Ten rows back from the stage. Randy had the Polka Dot guitar at that show. Ozzy said It was so F**KING COLD that his stage set trucks broke down in Minneapolis and they had nothing but instruments and amps. To compensate, the great one extended his show. Ozzy paced back and fourth for over two hours in just his red sweat pants and bare feet. No one cared that there was no stage set. It was an incredible show. Best I've ever seen.
Redwood65...interesting! I attended the Minneapolis show and I could never forget how cold it was that night..wind chill was under -60 I think. I was never aware of the story about the stage set and what happened up in Duluth, that the show was so good that no one cared about there not being a stage set. You guys up there in Duluth are always a lot colder than we are in the cities. But brutal weather never stops us Minnesotans, does it! 😊👍
Everyone comparing Iommi & Rhoads... they're both completely different guitarists from different backgrounds. Iommi is a child of the blues and Rhoads was at the front of the 'shred movement' THEY'RE BOTH AWESOME! No need to compare.
Both totally different guitarists, both amazing, Iomi started it all, Randy was so great in this song on the tribute album, almost a pretty song in a way due to his classical guitar training, and no you're not an idiot, they're both great!
Damn why can't there be video of this. It's crazy how little live video there is of Randy performing. This is just such a monstrous version of this tune. Everything Randy touched was so incredible. I don't know why people below are comparing Iommi and Randy. They're two of the greatest metal guitar players ever. Iommi practically wrote the book on metal guitar and Randy single handedly created a new style of metal. He took it to new heights. They both influenced generations of guitar players. One isn't better than the other. It's not a contest. Iommi has a catalog of great songs that's deeper than any metal guitar player I can think of. Sadly, Randy didn't get the chance to have such a deep catalog but what he left will stand the test of time. Still missing him like crazy 34 years after his passing. RIP Randy Rhoads
+aocobra97 Thanks alot. It's all good. I don't care if I get one like or a million likes. I appreciate you saying that. It's a shame she won't release it than. She'd sure make alot of people happy if she did. Maybe one day...
Yup this is Randy. He's using his flanger right here. And no one else who played with ozzy played the Db5 power chord and then picked the B and E strings. That's definitely something only Randy would do
When he starts using the wah pedal in the part that starts at 2:03... Can you imagine what experiencing that in real life in a pre-internet world where your only comparison is the original of the song by Sabbath would be like? Unwordably jealous of everybody that was at this concert!
this is easily the most aggressive brootal Randy version I've heard...at least thru my speakers..I'm wondering why in the hell they never released this show? this is way better than even the Tribute album.
What I love most about Rhodes is that he never played the same rhythm part twice. I may be a keyboardist PROUDLY but I can not explain how much this changed how I play. I mean, it all but defines me and NO ONE hears Rhodes cuz' I play keys. Gotta love it. RIP, Randy.
Its nice to hear different solo here from Tribute version. It was Randys way to spread his wings. He couldnt really play different solo on Mr Crowley or Crazy Train. Thumbs up on this one!
Saw the same show on 2/20/82 in Dallas. Will forever be the best show I have ever seen or ever will see. Nobody has even come close to the "magic" that this band had live. Simply awesome ear candy. Thanks for posting it!
I first heard this as a kid and never knew it was Randy playing until now. Makes sense. I was blown away then - and now, once again. RR was amazing beyond description - I have listened to guitarists my whole life and that was almost incomparable. Soul + Metal = WOW. Thank you You Tube for the random side result.
Really one of the very best of all time. What incredible sounds he could make. Very few guitarists could command so much attention throughout every performance like Randy Rhoads. He could not help but grandstand constantly but it was so good it worked all the time. Rock star big time. The real thing.
When people complain about fans having their phones out during concerts makes me wish there were more cameras to record legendary footage of Rhoads at the time. Wish I could see this performance on film.
Man randy could change a solo up and have it sound amazing and almost every show . Certain versions with small alterations but still extremely impressive to compose so many great pieces
Really one of the very best of all time. What incredible sounds he could make. Very few guitarists could command so much attention throughout every performance like Randy Rhoads. He could not help but grandstand constantly but it was so good it worked all the time.
This is Definitely Randy. I think what's confusing some people is the tone. It says it's taken from the soundboard which make it sound more harsh. Some of the licks he plays in the solo though are identical to what he played on the version that's on "Tribute".
I grew up in the 70’s in the heyday of Sabbath and was a huge fan of the original line up, I even had the black light poster on my bedroom wall. That being said, yes Iommi was a damn good guitarist for his day, but Randy just takes this song to a whole different level.
ye olde Met Center lol. i was there. junior year in hs. wish i woulda brought a camera to this one, can't believe theres audio of this show. thx for posting :D
Randy was a God, no two ways about it, you can still see his influence of the amazing guitarists of today, just look at any children of bodom track and you know that he's a giant inspiration... R.I.P RR
I personally like the solo from the Tribute album way more. It's by far my favorite solo ever. However, he still did a damn good job at linking the solo back to the song at the end. he was such a great player who has inspired me for over 10 years now
Hey CHILDREN! Apples and oranges!2 different schools of rock here.love them or leave them.I love Tony's tone..and that is born mostly from his RIGHT hand (attack with the pick besides his chord trems) Randy was the classical with tony as a tonal inspiration. How is this bad!Settle down knuckeheads!
No one other than maybe Jimmy Page has written so many great riffs, as Iommi. His playing isn't fast like Randy, or full of character like Zakk wylde for example, but it's THERE! He does it right for me at least, everytime!
@bishopquack Yes he had! In fact Randy Rhoads was using so much distortion that most guitar players in the world would be heard like shit but despite that Randy had such a clean tone! AMAZING!
it wasent 100% official but i think he was going to if he was still alive...but who knows what the next album wouldhave been like with randy, another epic master piece... R.I.P Randy Rhoads
@Gaw1n best comment I've ever read RIP Randy 1956-1982 we all love your music and your beautiful guitar playing, safe to say one of the very few musicians who took the attention away from the Ozzman
@rick50150 You're right. A "fortuitous" death allowed ZW to get VERY VERY lucky and land a gig that put him on the map. His chops were okay but w/o Ozzy, chances are he'd have been no different than the other thousands of wannabes.
I never liked Zak. I just never could get into his style. Too much of the pinch thing and his biker image thing just turned me off. Jake was much more original, imho and was able to write better songs, play Randy’s music with respect and yet keep it original.
I think this song is of Tribute album or Ozzy Live (disc2 Diary of A Madman)... I love this version of Children of the Grave. Randy Rhoads is a fucking guitar god.
I think I like both for their differences. Randy's was Randy's. But Sabbath's was Sabbath's. One sounded like a lightning bolt, the other sounded like an elephant stampede.
@LilNickEZ12 yup randy used his les paul for most of the blizzard of ozz album accept for on mr crowley and suicide solution he used his sandoval V and he used the LP on the sabbath songs on diary of a madman it was a switch between his 2 jackson V's you can tell which ones he used on which songs cuz one of his jackson v's had a basic tremolo the other was a string threw model so just givin u some tips lol
@DJBoLtZ Trust me dude. He hated it. If you read the McIver and Sarzo books, you'll learn that Randy was supposed to be the guitarist on Speak Of The Devil - a live performance of all Black Sabbath stuff. Randy thought it was beneath him as a musician to play other people's music, and actually tried to get out of doing contractually. Not only that, but he hated doing Paraniod, Children of the Grave, and Iron Man in the Blizzard sets...I'm an old fan of Sabbath. Randy wasn't.
@bishopquack Pickups cannot be "distorted". Actually his guitar was an Ivory Colored Les Paul Custom. Randy didn't have it long enough for the paint and other layers of stuff to age from white to cream. and If you don't believe me google Ivory Colored Les Paul. Gibson makes them time to time and sells em. and When Quiet Riot Randys band who bought it for him, bought it in an Ivory color. look at photos from when they started out, its still Ivory colored in those photos.
Tony Iommi who i grew up loving and adoring(Got his Pic at the Mob Rules Tour and Born Again Tour shows couldn't even attempt all the Melodic Bluesy Harmonic Riffs in between the Music Notes even if he tried for months on end shit I got Dimebag Darrell on the King Biscuit Flower Hour {By FAR best work to date thats released

@nirvanafan500 I don't play guitar, that's great low standard music fans like those basic songs, he caught lightning in a bottle and exploited bandwagon fans. We know lots of luck is important to success, exemplified by Kurt, who, on his best day, couldn't write like a world-class player like Rhoads. See if there were justice Diary if a madman would have outsold Necermond
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Kurt could never write anything like randy could and randy could never write anything like Kurt could. Kurt could never play the guitar like randy if he lived 100 years. Yea but he was in Quiet Riot then too when they first started and if you notice at pictures its still the Ivory Cream color so it was bought Ivory/Cream
@ the people attempting to discuss randy rhoads' tone. I believe the effect and settings you're looking for to duplicate his sound at this show is shit loads of MXR distortion +, a modded marshall 1959 head, lots of treble and middle, and for the rest of the sound... Just under 30 years of boot leg audio tape crumbling away! :P:)
It amazes me how someone is arguing over internet. This is a classic rock song we're all listening to, and I see two people arguing about if God exist or not... Am I the only one who doesn't see the connection? XD Just enjoy the fucking music
@RadioStarNYC ohh gotcha dang lol i need to get a custom vest making person lol. and true hahah he made it awesome, just the heavier sound with the C# low E string with maybe hitting the F# to F instead of the A-G# would sound cool. idk hes the one playing it.. i wish there was footage of him playing it!!!!!
Well A white fades to an Ivory/cream in about 2 to 3 years which means yes Randys could have but if you look at photos right after Randy got it its Ivory/Cream. And I could but its pretty much the same as the Tribute one, you just gotta practice alot and get the feel for it.
true, iommi created metal but look on the other side...randy wrote masterpiece songs like crazy train, diary of a madman, over the mountain, dee, suicide solution,i dont know, goodbye to romance,mr.crowley, believer, flying high again and when it comes to better skills at guitar...its randy, hands down.....randy infleuced alot of the great guitar players of today and when he was around...some people dont relize how much of an impact randy had on metal with his guitar playing.

samfrompassingtime its spelled RHOADS
the crescendo he builds through the solo is simply epic. What a fukn legend he is
Mob Rules showed what Iommi could do. Randy Rhoads is equal to the task. Love them both.
God how I would have loved to see Randy Rhoads play with Ozzy back in 80-early 82 R.I.P. Randy we all love and miss you
never heard this recording before. the tribute record was always my favorite. I love this recording

@@atteljas to be honest. He probably didn’t want to play different solos on them anyway because of how good they were
Randy new how to tap into the music even when it wasn't his own composition. A true musician at all levels and genre. Thanks for the upload.

@mattRRgraham1996 - the original polka dot vest Randy wore was made for him by his Mom. With Ozzy all the clothes were custom made for them.
RadioStarNYC..I never knew that little tidbit about his vest. Delores was a sweet lady and awesome mother

anyone no wat that technique is called when its kinda like tappin but ur pick hand is above ur fretin hand?
randy rhoads the "electric angle" rest in peace

If you are using your bridge pickup, and you hit the strings a little further from the bridge, like around the neck pickup, the tone will sound a little more mid-rangy. It will not sound as thick as the neck pickup, but close. The problem is if you want to mute the strings a bit for speed or staccato type picking. The strings vibrate wider at that point, so it's harder to do that near the neck than it is at the bridge. I hope that's what you are asking about... :)

@DJBoLtZ Do a RUclips search for "That Metal Show S04E06" with Rudy Sarzo. At around 4:55, you can see Rudy say it...

and when it comes to better skills at guitar...its randy, hands down.....randy infleuced alot of the great guitar players of today and when he was around...some people dont relize how much of an impact randy had on metal with his guitar playing.
The picture is (I think) from his last show March 18th, 1982.
