Which brings me to my biggest complaint about MVP. Most players that win MVP end up being a lot better than they were when they won the MVP in later years but never win it again. Outside of maybe MJ? It’s pretty ridiculous
It’s because once you play consistently well at that level people just accept that you’re already that good - the MVP is as much about narrative as anything else. It’s definitely not a fair measure of who has actually been the best player in the league… would be a lot less variety in the winners if that was the case. It’s almost of the opposite of the Football Balon d’or - that award has basically gone to Messi/Ronaldo for the last 15 years because between them they’ve been streets ahead of the competition

Gota agree. Dude worked to get better (defined as effectiveness in an nba game & not some other pointless parameters) after winning mvps & championships. An even better shooter - at all 3 levels - for example. You can even see some of this work in his physique, endurance & durability. Initially he was frail & injury prone but worked specifically where he was vulnerable to injury to become more available. Iv learned (thx to some great yt channels) that training to prevent & recover quickly from injury is not the same as training for size or even strengrh. It's different.
Well, it’s because his game is revolved around shooting and you get better at shooting through time. The only thing you need to do is just left Make sure your arms are strong enough to shoot the ball. And your stamina is good to go around screens and run around
I think maybe the most fascinating thing about great players is looking at how they adapt and fill out as they age and lose athleticism. Steph may arguably not be quite as good of a shooter as he was then. He may not have the same athletic burst or be as ahead of the curve with mismatch hunting and perpetual motion, but in terms of more controllable skills, he’s a more complete player now than he was back then. His defense is better. He makes passes now that he didn’t before. His handle is tighter. And his finishing package is arguably as diverse as it’s ever been. And I want to reinforce that this isn’t limited to Steph. Every great player does this kind of thing. LeBron improves his outside shot and becomes arguably the best passer in the league. Michael Jordan improves his long 2 accuracy and defensive and offensive decision-making. This is what great players do.
I bring this up all the time and people say lmao he won mvp 2x back then. And I’m like he doesn’t have any of the weaknesses he had back then. He’s stronger so he can survive bumps when he drives and is even better at finishing. He’s shooting and passing are still great if not better and his handles are cleaner and tighter.
He's so much smarter and so much stronger now. Back then, mvp Steph would dribble alot and shoot even with 2 defenders. But now, he dribbles less and gets to his spot more efficiently. When he gets double, he immediately gets rid of the ball.

It was still very foreign then, nobody really knew what to do, now they are close to figuring it out, 7-8 years later, and he’s still unbelievably effective and efficient. I imagine swapping his second mvp with todays curry, they win five straight rings. The 2016 curry in todays league, probably wouldn’t have made the playoff’s realistically, due to the change that he hadn’t seen
That’s kind of becoming the new norm. 28ish is your athletic peak for most athletes but your skill set can keep elevating well into your 30s and make u a better basketball player even if you’re not as athletic. It’s when u get to the upper 30s that most of these athletes start to decline.
Well, statistically, most of his later seasons were better than 2015, but worse than 2016.
