Spearfishing Hawaii Knife Jaw Catch and Cook + Sashimi Taste Test

- In this video I take off with Sam to explore some new areas to go spearfishing in Hawaii. They end up being too rough so we dive a popular spot and manage to collect my first ever knife jaw. I lose a massive uku and pick up a few other reef fish as well. As usual I break down my dives to show you what I did right and wrong. I happen to have 4 different sushi grade fish in the fridge so we compare how they taste and then teach you guys one of our favorite simple fish recipes. Thanks so much for watching!!!

Since Justin is a Hawaiian legend you should do a blindfold sashimi challenge, have him guess which fish is which that would be funny to see and I hope he does well! Haha
FearMySpear OH that’s a dope idea.
That’s actually a pretty amazing idea! I’ll ask him. Maybe on his channel I keep trying to get him to start!!!
@@RyanMyersExpeditions if he doesn't want to start his own channel, which he should do.... do a permanent collab... The man is a Hawaiian Legend... You two together, cherry bro
That's def a very cool idea. Having never met him, from the videos he just seems like such a cool, down to earth dude. He certainly makes Hawaii look good.
Ryan Myers if he made a channel and had amazing quality videos like this he would blow up
We need more bud! My kids are enthralled watching the spearfishing and eating. Such a good example of how to use our natural resources!
Thanks so much for the support making them as fast as I can! New one out tomorrow night diving for lobster!!!
Great video, you can really tell when Sam does not like the taste of something. Her actions speak louder than her words. I have watched many many “Catch and Cook” Hawaiian videos. This recipe in this is video was a welcome difference. If I have watched 100 Hawaiian fish cooking videos the fish in 90% of the videos were deep fried, 3% were steamed, 3% were grilled and the remaining 4% were other. It is so nice to see fish prepared in a way other than deep frying. Mahalo for that.
Thanks man ya we love the Hawaiian ways of cooking but also are really enjoying using some of our old recipes on these new fish! Thanks for all the support!
Best spear fishing channel ever!! keep up the sick vids
Thus is the most underrated channel
Thanks man growing fast!
I agree with you, the feeling when you come up knowing that your partner is going to be there is the best feeling, my girl does the same, we are blessed bah🤙🏽
Nothing better than diving with your girl stoked you’ve got a good one too!
I agree with you on the fact that we don't have to always shoot the biggest or first fish we see. We can pick exactly what kind of fish we want and we don't need to shoot a fish we don't need or want at that time and we can save it for another time.
that double rainbow shot in background....awesome
Freaking love that shot. Was a crazy sunset session.
That rainbow looked real nice👌🏾👌🏾🙏🏾🥰
That rainbow is just amazing
Agreed!
Thanks for the recipe. Tried it with seasoned panko and it was delicious. Love watching you both diving together and enjoying life. Mahalo!
Stoked it worked for you Jesus!
I really like that method of diving that you do with Sam using just one gun, it's a great way of implementing that 1 diver up, 1 diver down rule that we should ALL use. We just had a young diver pass here on Oahu and friend of mines that recently passed on Kauai and I feel that techniques like yours should be shared and would save lives. You guys are great ambassadors of conservation and how to be responsible. Keep it up, I love your videos!
Thanks for the support Leighton ya I followed the young divers passing it’s always super sad. I’m going to be putting out a safety video soon to hopefully help address some of these techniques.
@@RyanMyersExpeditions That would be awesome, my 12 year old son watches all your videos and it would be nice for him to hear it from someone other than myself.
Nice dive. So much life there. If menpatchis are swimming in open water during the day, man that spot is hardly touched!!! Bummer bout the uku, looked like a sweet shot. Lai and uku is one of our favorite sashimi also. I’ve let a couple guys try sashimi lai for the first time, they all described it as sweet just like your vids man.. keep it up
Thanks man ya it was so late just before sunset I think that’s why they pachis were all cruising. I still cry over that uku and feel like I did everything right and was robbed.
I also really like the two divers and one gun method. Always have a safety (helps push more), someone to help with fish/hold the gun, rest periods are always productive since the other person diving, and it is fun to have someone to talk about whats going on down there.
You're in Hawaii man, add some crushed macadamia nuts to that crust mixture and it will blow your mind...
Ughhh true that would be perfect. We added some to our poke bowl the other day and completely changed it!
"Well guys it's a little rougher than I expected....." Yup. That Lai is a MONSTER. I love the fact that you're talking about how much better the sash is after a few days in the freezer, I have so many friends that don't know that the best sashimi is always frozen first. Mean video Sam and Ryan!
Thanks so much for the support!!!
I'm moving to FL from AZ in two months, pretty much just for fishing / diving, but I gotta say, your videos are making me have second thoughts about not choosing Hawaii... You are truly living the life my friend.
That rainbow was EPIC....
Brahda Ryan, you need to put a ring on that finger...
Cooking with Sam, Hawaiin Style... You can have that one, LOL
Lol working on it.
3:45 awesome Hawaiian double rainbow
Thanks!!! Love seeing these while diving!!!
nice,. another video... always waiting for the notification from your channel..
These videos are the best part of the day
Tho guys is my favorite RUclips I have watched all his videos
You should make a video of your favourite fish to hunt! Thanks for the awesome video!
“Seeing this notification just ruined my day.”

Is Ryan your brother or is the last name coincidence?
leo ll Thanks for asking! According to documentation he is my brother although we are not related. My birth mother adopted him from a UFO crash near our home and raised him as her own. 👽
@@summermyers6425 have you ever seen his probe collection?
@@leolldankology lol dats funny!
I dont care if this video is a year old, thank you thank you thank you for for the review of this creekkooler. I ordered the 30qt red one and it was amazing. Just pissed how i just found out about this product yet ive been spearfishing for a while. Thanks again and happy catch bro.
We need some Sam POV with her shooting some fish! Epic vid, sorry about the Uku.
Ya we do really need to get another go pro. Thanks for the support!
I like to squeeze some lemon or lime in the soysauce and washabi mix. Another great video, love it.
Thanks Santiago will give that a try!
Im chelou requerme from philippines, you guys are so great. Catch fish and cook. This channel really inspires me about spear fishing ,I also do spear fishing and i try to apply those that i have learned from your videos, but its hard for me to apply all of the stuff you do coz i dont even have a complete outfit during spearfishing. How i wish to have those guns and all the stuff you have. Coz i'd also like to catch big fish.
I pray that many more will support your youtube channel. Im your big fan.
Thanks alot GOD BLESS & MORE POWER.
Thanks so much for all the support!!! Really want to visit the Philippines someday!
Love it when a notification pops up for your videos. So I want to buy a new spear gun for the next time I go on vacation and I keep seeing roller guns. What makes you choose a roller?
Thank you for sparing that ooh-hoo! They are my favorite fish. 🥰
It’s called uhu 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Steve Dk ik how’s dis haole
Love the vids, best spearfishing commentary that’s out there. They’ve been my inspiration throughout the lockdown in San Diego. Can you work in a few shorts on breath-work / breath hold techniques? So much info is out there, but I would be interested to hear your take. Thx!!!
Thanks Andrew stoked o could help you out. Ya I’m working on some breathing stuff but honestly I’m no expert at it. I live by slow diaphragm breathing a peak inhalation and that’s it. I think people get too focused on the breath where there’s really a lot of other things going on just as important.
So sad that you lost a massive ukulele😂😂
You might want to check the description 😂
Lol wrote that at like 5 am lol
New vid notification made my day... another epic vid!
Stoked for the support thanks man!
Could you do an episode going over your creekkooler/ float setup? That would be really helpful. And I live your content. I’ve used some of you advice and have been bringing home more and more fish each dive. Keep up the good work
Hey Ryan, would you do a video for beginners on how you prepare for a dive. How you relax into it and talk about your breathing before going down and also how you gage your bottom. I know it's a lot dude but it would help beginners like me that wanna try pole spearfishing. Thanks- Awesome videos my friend. Great job. -m-
Thanks Marcelo ya I can make something like that.
Ryan Myers thanks Ryan. I’m diving now getting better at breath holding but no Spearfishing yet. Thanks again. M
Ryan please talk about recovery time between each dive also on recovery mode breathing 1x2 so twice the amount of time on your exhale from your inhale. Is that what we should do?
Thanks buddy Marcello
Awesome man!! Love watching different channels inspires me of what I should change to improve mine!! Legends!!
Thanks man ya gotta watch a ton to do research and see what you like.
I can’t believe you don’t have a million subs
Working on it!
Have to remember you cannot go everywhere some of the small communities that subsist off of these areas rely on their fishing grounds. There are plenty places you can go discover but just remember get some places you’ll go and and fish or dive and your car will be vandalized. I don’t condone these actions but it’s a reality we live. People actually live far away from work or Costco so they need their ahupuaa and it’s resources to feed their families. If any of this doesn’t make sense to you, I suggest taking the time to research. This is an important part of Hawai’i not many understand. I enjoy the videos always nice to hear and see adventures around the island as long as you not revealing grounds that the native people need to subsist. Obviously you love Hawai’i and it’s culture and people. How lucky you get friends that take you to their zones. Blessings. Oh and those who say this is America and you can go wherever you wish. Historically Hawai’i was stolen from its people similar to the banana republic of South American countries.
With attitude you not going have a pretty stay here. Again just my experience.
Also tips on living and diving in Hawai’i. Only take what you need Malama the cycles of the iʻa fish. Always ask before you go in someone elses zone. Go Be apart of these small communities and build relationships.
Always take your trash you bring in and take it out.
Remember all your bankrupt fishing lines get stuff on the reef. People like me who live in these small communities often end up cleaning up after the large number of people who vacation or hobby fish.
Always honor what you catch and hōʻihi (treat sacred) the places you travel.
Never take a whole pile of fish from each school. Just couple. That goes for bugs as well. No be greedy.
Follow those rules and you will likely be better welcomed the those who just come and do what they like not thinking about their impact.
Aloha.
Thanks Benjamin I really appreciate you looking out for the ocean and the people that depend on it. Wherever I go I try and be respectful to the local people and marine life. Glad you enjoy the videos!
awesome vid and next time i cook a fish i will definitely use that recipe. for the next vids though i would love to see more spearfishing oriented and more tips. also a gear walk through would be awesome. keep it up!
Also, do you think it is worth getting the small CreekKooler? i want a float boat that is easy to carry around but i want to be able to take a good haul of fish.
The way I use the creekkooler is basically 90 % of the time I don’t fill up the small 15 l one. If I do fill it I have a stringer on my belt I just put on the cooler like a regular float and I’m usually on my way in anyways. I like the minimalist small version as it’s what works the majority of the time.
Haha! I've had that same cooler for a year waiting to use it for a shore dive and just used it with Kelly the other day. Holds a dive flag too. Great minds think alike!
Great minds do think alike Judah I saw this somewhere and was like omg no more sharks!
Found the channel a few weeks ago, enjoying it alot! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Carl stoked you like it!!!
Wifey just wrote down the recipe, we will get back to you tomorrow. hey, my moms recipe for teriyaki from a Japanese fam on Oahu late 1950's 1/2 dry white wine, 1/2 soy sauce, crushed pineapple, garlic, ginger. :-)
Sweet that’s awesome man thanks so much cool recipe we make a teriyaki chicken thing will try that out.
Try some pickled ginger in between different types of sashimi to clean out the taste and feel of the last piece.
Never liked the pickled ginger but I could see it being super useful for exactly that. Maybe that’s why it always comes with sushi?
I was thinking that insulated cooler/float thing was a great tool for night time lobster diving. now I definitely will take it out of my "save for later" list and into "my cart"
Toon Life 808 for sure! they are sold out already of the 15 quart size though
It’s completely gets rid of the drag from lobsters in a bag tied to a float while solving the shark problem. I’d recommend the 30 L for lobsters though. They just got everything back in stock.
Sold out quick but just got everything back in stock. I’ll get the 30 l next though for sure.
Making me hungry! Looks delicious 😋
It really was thanks for the support!
Looks delicious! I can’t wait to get back in the water and try that recipe! Thanks for another fantastic video!
No worries man thanks for watching!!!
Mama Angie has perfected cooking fish, that’s a fact
I heard she fed you your first fish ever!
Awesome vids Ryan and Sam.. love watching them brings back memories of when we use to dive .. maybe one day I’ll get back to diving 🤙🏽
Gotta stick with it man! Thanks for the support!
Thanks for making my day
Can you do a video explaining how to safely and properly age fish for sashimi? I’m scared of eating it when it’s borderline spoiling scares me
Just cut all the red meat away and wrap in paper towels on a ziplock for a few days. No need to leave too long. 3-4 days is perfect.
Solid, good job Ryan
Thanks so much!!!
Love your videos so much and your tips keep going man 🤘
Dude that cooler float is so sick! Sweet vid
New favorite thing ever I’m so stoked on it.
Sam is so cute. I like her in the vids
I think she’s pretty cute too
Killed it!!
Thanks guys!!!!
Great video Ry! keep em coming Bra! Are you living on the big island fulltime?
Thanks Ryan I’m living here till the world returns to normal then I’m hoping to get back to wandering.
Awesome vid. Your cooking is really coming along. Would have been good to see you prep the sashimi block.
Thanks John really just need you to come back so I can film you cook!
i love your videos. idk if you have one but you should give us some stories from your travels.
Have a lot of old travel ones filmed that I need to edit just been having so much fun diving and filming here lately!
You are one of the people who inspierd me to learn to hold my breath and today I die my first 2 min breth hold
That’s so cool Daniel stoked to help you out!
Great vid keep up the postive energy
This is a great video. Excellent work!
Awesome video content🤙 I love watching your video
Thanks so much for the support Chyson!!!
Ryan Myers I’ve bin watching a lot of your videos lately and the techniques you’ve bin using I have bin trying and they helped me out a lot. Keep up the good work🤙🤙
Love the Creekcooler idea! Is it good for holding human bodies? Asking for a friend.
I think you should get the 30L one for that
That 30L Creekcooler should sink as well
This guy is living the perfect life. Spearfishing, diving, living in the gorgeous land of Hawaii, GORGEOUS wife/girlfriend. God what I'd do to have this life.
Thanks man having a blast out here!
@@RyanMyersExpeditions If I ever fly down to Hawaii, I'm literally gonna be looking for anyone around the shores talking to their gopro. xD
Nice Ryan, we live up the road from that spot, it's our favorite place to dive :)
Ah that’s awesome what a cool place in the world to live. Love that area!
Alamihi mama that. Alaihi is the smaller football shape one. It’s good raw, or any way really.
Her 3 prong seems like the rubber is a couple inches too long. Plus maybe some skateboarding grip tape or electric tape where she holds the shaft to stretch the rubber.
Cheers.
Thanks I agree it’s too long we just shortened it up and added a grip!
i wish i can have ur old speargun sir..love fr.philippines
Love the taste test! Keep the vids coming brotha!🤙🤙
How did that red wine taste? I never drink red wine with seafood. It makes the red wine taste fishy. For sashimi I would pair with rice wine/sake, vodka, or white wine.
Hmmm did not even think about pairing our cheap boxed wine with our dinner. Will definitely take that into consideration next time though.
First i want to say great catch the Knifejaw or pacific beak fish as i call it down here in Coast of Perú, great flesh, White meat. Second, nice buoy, AND third excelent water condición. The Knifejaw Is good in the grill.
Thanks man ya we need to get a grill bad for now it’s the oven or pan. Super stoked on how the knife jaw came out though I’ll definitely be taking these more often!
love this content! Subscribed!
Thanks for the support Corey!!!
Hey keep up the good content its inspiring
Thanks Kevin!!
Haha I thought about using one of those for a float a while back just because it was a little cheaper than those big ones but I ended up buying the regular ones😂 glad to see that it actually works! Might have to invest😂
It’s honestly been the best addition to my gear in years. Completely changed shoredive life for me.
ANGIE IS QUEEN.
14:40
I like mine thin also, when I’m arch the videos from Japan they always seem to cut the pieces really big and thick
Seeing the notification just made my day.
great video dude! would you recommend the 100 rob allen roller for mediterranean fish? I notice alot of european guns use thinner shafts so i was wondering if the thicker rob allen shaft would make a difference (speed wise) as those fish are very agile.
Stay safe!
If you keep waking Sam up early she’s not going to want to save you one day...
Please use a mount when filming in the car. Don’t want these videos ever going away.
Hmm didn’t think of that. Thanks!
If you want something better for holding those fish search up float boats I use mine a lot in nz and I put my kingfish in them and they are for holding fish on the surface or a floatation device
mate.. I feel your loss on that uku. I just lost the biggest lai I've ever shot, so disappointing. I was already making sashimi in my head and somehow it got off
Good videos bud, I just moved back to Oahu, and have fallen in love
With free diving and spear fishing.
Any visits/videos to this island??
Thanks man hoping to get to all the islands eventually!
Glad to see you're using chopsticks.😉😂
Watching these videos makes me miss the ocean! And fresh Sashimi!🍣
Borrowed these from the neighbors because I knew people would flip if I did this with a fork lol. Thanks man!
I'm just teasing ya bud. Love the videos!
You should do a safety video for some beginner divers
I know I’m working on it. Thanks dude.
By watching your videos I forgot that it's night time hahahahaha
Lol glad you like em!!!
Hahahahahah
Besty RUclips video ever you should come spearfishing in Miami Beach
Damn i knew i was onto something when i stuck my cooler in a boogie board😂 they made the nice kine version
Used to love the boogie board but my fish would cook out of the water or attract fish in the water. This thing solved that problem I was stoked.
Hoo brah Gallic butter poke is da bomb
Thanks man definitely need to try the garlic butter poke!
Try soy sauce, vinegar, onion and little bit of hot pepper (to desired heat) with the fish bro. Great for sashimi or fried fish too
Sounds great got some steam kali in the oven now!!
Can’t wait to make it to Kona and fish!
Fish everywhere here!
My favorite fish in Japan Is the knife jaw . Best bit is they are always really curios.
Ya they are seem to come out of nowhere and find you.
You should try some of those with ponzu too!

Awesome vid Ryan! I couldn’t find link for your creek cooler float. Could you please provide? I do a lot of shore dives and I’m sick of the drag a string of fish creates. Thanks!
The aging makes for good texture, but fresh ono is still high quality fish!
Agreed definitely still great but nothing like a few days old and melts in your mouth.
