Just found your channel. As someone that loves pens, but hates to write - I love what you do and would love nearly every pen you have made. This one is one of my favorites
Awesome work!!! People don't realize the skill, patience & hard work it takes to make these beautiful pens! Wow!!! My husband & I love ur vids! Big hugs! Have an amazing day!😃
Thank you! I have got one video with commentary but I really didnt enjoy doing it so I try not to now 😊 if I get more confident in the future I will try again for sure 😁
A running commentary of what the processes are really helps us novices. Unfortunately, for me the chosen “music” is a real turn off (yes I know I can mute it) Nice pen though, what model pen kit is it please?
Had the same lathe was good but the bearings gave out on it earlier this year so bought a nova comet II and its so nice having variable speed , lovely pens btw
Beautiful pen... I've watched thousands of pen videos and the close up after pressing in the pieces shows beautiful detail of your work that I wish some of the other turners would do... Subbed
scroooface thank you for the lovely comment, I will remember it for my next videos, I'm really busy now making pens for Christmas but I will have a new casting video very soon, thank you for subbing :)
Wow! I love the way you did this pen. I just ordered my first lathe tonight. I've been wanting to do this for a while and my GF and I are really interested in working with wood and resin like this. Can't wait to watch your other vids....
Gene S. Thank you for the nice comment, you will be hooked when you start! I'm working on another video now but I want to talk on it and I'm nervous and don't like talking to the camera so it's taking a while! :/
Your work is really nice. I can't wait to see more of your stuff. I use a program called Wondershare Filmora. It is really easy to use. You can use audio from the video or you can turn off the video sound and record over the vid or a little of both if you prefer. It has lots of great features and some excellent transitions, intros, credits etc. If you have not got an editor yet, you can check it out. I've made several videos but mostly for other people. My channel only has the 3 I made for my vacation last year because I really do not have much to video yet. This new hobby may be a chance to change that.
Thank you Richard, I was pleased with how it came out, I'm a bit annoyed with myself because I sold it and didn't really want to, it would of looked good in my collection 😁
I like how close you got to the inside tube - expertly done and a beautiful choice on the wood with excellent pearls showing! The music is not going to fit for everyone with the choices you have (I like it & have heard it before but for my hubby I turned it down to background sound as he had his prog. music on his laptop :) hahaha!)
Haha, the music is so hard to get right, I now use a different editing software so I can leave the noises of machines etc on when I speed up footage, I hope I'm getting better at it! 😁
James, Great project, absolutely gorgeous blank and good quality video. The only negative is the music which is terrible. After 2 mins I watched the rest with the mute on which is a shame as you can miss commentary and the sounds of the turning process.
Huntsville Houch thanks for the feedback! The editing software I use doesn't let you use the audio when you speed it up (I don't usually work this quick lol) so it needed some kind of noise, I'll look for a different one and see about a commentary, I don't really like talking so that's why I haven't put any commentary over the video, but maybe soon after I get a bit of confidence. :)
@@melberry5929 thank you, this was second ever video, it's hard to please everyone, I couldn't put the noises of the tools on this one because of the editing software I had so music was the way to go!

Fantastic! Not a criticism at all of your work, but I think a dark red would have harmonized with the red tones in that cherry wood. Thanks for the great video.
I'm a little late to the show, but I just started turning pens. They came out great James. Question. What kind of wood did you use and how did you make the hole? I don't want it to be a perfect circle. Thanks
Beautiful blank and pen! How important is the pressure pot part in preparing the blanks. I have wood and epoxy resin, would these be ok casting without a pot. Thanks
Gareth c I haven't really experimented without a pressure pot, the pot was about as much as the resin I use so I don't want to waste any, if you have slow set epoxy you can be careful when mixing and pour from a height to pop the bubbles whilst you pour and try to pick the bubbles out with a tooth pick, it might take a bit of practice and patience to get it right, please let me know how you get on!
Hey Gareth, like you, I don't have a PP either. I am getting final parts for one this weekend however. I've had good luck like the jewelry girls do by using slow setting resin and periodically blowing a torch over the blanks to suck bubbles out. Worked for me ok.

I can see a great channel is being created here .. It was such a great vid and project I was wondering what is the usage of pressure chamber exactly and is there a cheap easy replacement for it ?
Mohamed Ahmed thank you very much, the reason for the pressure pot is when you mix the resin together you put loads of little bubbles into it, by putting it in a pressure pot you crush these bubbles down so they are so small they are effectively gone, my pot was under £100 new, and a 2nd hand air compressor would be cheap as well, you could use a PR resin but I don't like turning it because I find it really brittle and it has a horribly strong smell.

What Alumilite are you using that you aren't having to stabilize your wood before casting? Or is there a trick you use to keep bubble from forming at the wood to resin mating point? Awesome pen, I'm going to have to get some silver powder, I like the look of that.
Soots Crafting hey soots, it's amazing clear cast resin I use and I haven't had a problem with bubbles but my wood is extremely dry before I cast it, nothing has moved yet, this resin doesn't go really hard so you can't get a nice shine without adding a CA finish so I think it moves with the wood a bit ,

60 PSI for 24 hrs? That's not necessary. And pouring Part B by volume as opposed to weight, also incorrect. Not good procedures. Finished product may be good, but not a good utube tutorial.

Hey James, what's the purpose of the pressure pot?
The pressure pot compresses the bubbles in the resin down so they become microscopic, if you didn't use it there would be big bubbles in the blank that would need filling

i thought it would just be loud but jesus its like a 5 second loop over and over of the worst fake dubstep
I'm sure you can let me off, it was only my second ever video! I've got some new editing software now that is much better to use, hopefully my editing is better now!

Место стыков и края не аккуратные 😐👎🏻 Если делать - то до конца и от души, а не так на пофиг. В таких делах важны ДЕТАЛИ.
Omg that music! 😠 please don’t use it again, everything else is superb
Yep, I got that people don't like this track from most of the comments, I'd like to know if my latest video is audibly better if you have a few minutes to check, so I know I'm improving 😁
James Garwood it’s much better! But I think it’s time for another video soon! Whatcha got for us?? 😁
@@davidhemphill07 lol I know, I'm doing my very best to get my new workshop finished, it's so close, just doing the ceiling and electrics, then I'm on new videos, I'm aiming for one a month, just got my new batch of resin today in the post so there are a few resin videos planned this year 😋
James Garwood new shop?? Need a shop tour! lol congratulations on the new shop and I can’t wait to see the next video!
@@davidhemphill07 I could do one, 🤔 I don't like talking on a video though lol, maybe when I get it set up I'll be brave and do one! There are some pictures on my Instagram page if you want to see it but I'll show it off in the next video for sure 😁
If you searched the world over, you would not have found more annoying music.
You're welcome 😋
Nice pen, terrible music.
nice video. horrible music
Thanks, I get that a lot with this video 😊
Nice pen with HORRIBLE engraving. :-))
60 PSI for 24 hrs? That's not necessary. And pouring Part B by volume as opposed to weight, also incorrect. Not good procedures. Finished product may be good, but not a good utube tutorial.
Thanks for the feedback but you are wrong, amazing clear cast alumilite resin is measured by volume, not weight and de-mould time is 18-24 hours, my pressure pot is rated up to 80psi so 60psi is, 1 completely save and 2 doesn't do any harm, here is a link to the resin please check out the description to see how to use it
