Great trick with the card scraper! I'd never have thought of that. I work with resin quite a bit. Not the kind you have to check the temp on, that having been said ... Wood off-gasses. Best way to keep the bubbles out of resin without a pressure pot is to seal the wood first so air doesn't get out. Can use a couple of coats of shellac, or UV resin (just a thin, painted on coat) that you can put outside on a sunny day and it will be ready for pouring in about 10 minutes. Maybe an hour in cloudy conditions. Once the wood is sealed, any bubbles will come from the resin. (UV coating may be sticky even when fully cured, so you can wipe with alcohol if you're concerned about it). One way to get the bubbles out (again, I don't use stuff you have to check the temp on), put the mixed resin (before coloring) in a water bath on the stove and heat to 125 F and let it sit at that temp until all of the bubbles are gone. If you're mixing in small amounts (or using a resin with sufficient working time), you can actually heat it on an electric coffee cup warmer until the bubbles are gone. Then you can mix in your colorant very gently so as to not introduce more bubbles than necessary (and I recommend a plastic or silicone stir stick because the tongue depressors sent with most all kits are WOOD with trapped air), pop what comes up with a torch, and voila!. If you take the time (and I'm as impatient as they come), you won't ever have a bubble problem with hybrid blanks.
I made a pressure pot from a HF paint sprayer but need to practice with it more. I was using the incorrect type of resin and it wasn't working well for me. This was before I even started turning anything on a lathe lol. I think I'll look into getting some of this resin, just for the fact that it seems easy to work with, and no pressure needed. Thanks for another great video, and GO PACK GO
Wow thanks for all your work very helpfull! one thing i do with liquud diamonds which is all i use is put it in a vacuum chamber in the cups.to suck all air out before i pour! Also speeds up reaction time. i usually get °120 in 40 min. And pretty bubble free. Jaybird custom cues
Those turned out GREAT. I think your idea to leave in the original container longer would be a good idea. I use liquid diamonds, thank to Zac’s recommendation. I do not turn but it works for me for the most part. There are still some bubbles when the resin is translucent but not too bad if you watch it with a lighter or heat gun like what you did. Thanks for sharing.
Kris Gschwend Thanks for watching Kris!! Glad you enjoyed. I go to Zac for lots of things.. he’s awesome. Yeah.. I was wondering 1) where I could share the picture with you 2) if you could explain how to achieve such a look with epoxy. Love your videos, figured if anyone could achieve this, it’d be you! I have been working with some Liquid Diamonds with the GISI style molds I really love how it works. Little pricey for my taste but the outcome is worth it. My understanding is that you mix it in one container for a little while then pour it into another container and mix again. Thanks for more info
Great video man. I use Wise Bond epoxy because it also has a long working time. It's got a three to four hour working time. The one thing I like about the long working time of weisbond, is you don't have to worry about popping air bubbles. After sitting on your bench for 4 hours, the air bubbles have already risen to the surface and popped themselves. I once poured a 6 inch block of clear resin and had no air bubbles. And I never use a pressure pot when I use Wisebond. Their stuff isn't cheap, but I love it. You should give it a look sometime
nice product, but yes there will be bubbles unless you pressure pot, esp in clear castings. the mica pigments hide much of what you'd see in clear thanks for the vid!

I use pvc all the time but haven’t used one very long.. using mold release has worked very well.. and if it gets stuck, it’s not too hard to cut it off and I’m not sure it would be too deep for one pour.
Thanks for the great video! I'm going to start with resins using the Liquid Diamonds. BTW, you must be in the Panhandle of Texas because I saw a Toot N Totem cup on your bench!
Hi Jake. Great video. I wanted to start turning resin blanks and didn't want to invest in a pressure pot just yet. I wanted to see if I liked it first. Can you tell me how long you kept the resin in the mold before you popped it out? (the one without the pot)
Mark- Shopdogworkshop If the temperature was any colder than 65f I won’t pour it.. it might get up to temperature but could possibly not cure.. for instance it’s about a week after I made this video and it’s turned cold.. I would like to cast today but it’s in the 50’s in the shop, so I’m going to find something else to do. Lol

One thing you didn't address, Jake, is how the Liquid Diamonds turns. Having turned nearly all the different synthetics, I find that LD and Alumilite turn the best. They aren't as brittle as polyester resin and are more resilient. More importantly, they are less likely to have chip out unless you get really aggressive... from my experience. Hey where do you get the pen blank molds and other molds from?
The white individual ones are from lizard blanks. The other ones I made from HDPE plastic.
I don’t think it lost air pressure. It’s the air it pulled out of your resin that drops the pressure.

Does the proper temp to add color change based on the resin you’re using? I think here it was 120 degrees. Is it different for Alumlite or Total Boat? Thanks! Great vids!
David Campbell You are correct, it is different with different types of resin. Alumilite is 98 degrees.. I haven’t messed with total boat enough to know yet.. experimenting is the fun part though.
Did you make those molds yourself mate and if so what material did you use please?
Dooley I made the big mold myself. It HDPE plastic.. it works great.
Awesome thanks Jake nice work.
Jake - very cool blanks! Where do you buy the plastic (?) molds to cast in?
Casey J. Wilson Thank you very much. The smaller molds are from lizard blanks, the other plastic is from amazon.. I have it in my amazon store.

Thats what she said..... Its a lil bit smaller than I wanted...
Drone Wild Guess it depends on what she’s used to... lol
@@JakeThompson Lmao Brother, new sub since I watched
your coffin vid. Keep up the great work buddy...
Drone Wild hahaha.. Thanks for the sub.. that video got demonetized and then it stopped getting views. I wish it had done better.. glad you enjoyed it. 👍👍
@@JakeThompson that sucks man, I have watched some of your vids and they are great. I wished I had just some of your knowledge and skill. Keep them coming man. Don't give up.... Not even for a woman...
Drone Wild Hahaha.. no end in sight!!
Jake, so compare this resign to Alumilite. I know they are both different, which one you like?
Gary Spruill I haven’t done a deeper pour with liquid diamonds yet.. but I plan to do a side by side with liquid diamonds, total boat, and alumilite. Should be fun.. but I already know alumilite works for deeper pours and you don’t have to do multiple pours.. the liquid diamonds did seem to sand easier and faster than alumilite.. I will compare lots of aspects when I make that video.. I wanted to do it this week but it turned out to be freezing in Amarillo this weekend.. lol
@@JakeThompson my guys, here with me from Amarillo, just spoke with the wives and they are telling me it is snowing in Amarillo. Snug Bug in and stay off the roads. Later
Gary Spruill 👍👍👍

Mandy Ballge I will announce on this channel when I start selling.. Thank you for watching my videos. I’m glad you enjoy them.

Alle Barbi Thank you so much for your wonderful comment!!
But it's not transparent
Harsh Chandra I didn’t want these pen blanks to be transparent. I did some transparent tests in this video HERE: ruclips.net/video/6z6eHSdqLTQ/видео.html
Jake great videos but please get a new camera half your stuff is out of focus especially the close ups drives me nuts.
Brian Gedge Cinematographer I apologize for driving you nuts.. I’m improving things all the time.
Great video ~ but please work on getting your focus right. I had to stop watching despite wanting to know how they turned out.
I’ve been working on it..
