    The rice suggestion is very helpful! I have a future project of some Sycamore limbs to put into resin for a bowl blank. They are mostly about 1 1/2” diameter with big knots from my daughter and son in law’s yard. Those trees are very messy! Anyway, if I can I am going to turn a bowl with them as a gift. I am an extreme beginner with turning, have turned one practice spindle, and have never mixed any resin. So I had been trying to figure out how to best estimate how much to mix up. Obviously I will do some more simple projects before I attack the bowl.😸

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  4 года назад +2

      Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.. The Alumilite clear slow resin only has a 12 minute working time, it’s not enough time to use vacuum to remove the bubbles. You can use epoxyresins that have a 45 minute working time, then you can use vacuum if that’s your preference.

    I've recently started casting resin for knife handles. My first attempt I left the blanks in the pressure pot for 3 days. They were soft when I took them out and hardened over a week. My next two attempts were both epic failures. I had them under pressure overnight and again they came out soft. I measured by weight correctly but don't understand why its not working out. Were the blocks rock hard after two or three hours and finished them off in the same day? Thanks

    Jake- I’ve watched this video a few times and I want to say thanks . It’s very helpful. One question- is 12 min open time the main criteria or 95 degrees before putting in the pp? In other words if it’s still not up to temp is it mission critical to get it in the pot by 12 minutes ?

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  2 года назад +1

      12 minutes is a guideline.. the temp in your shop will make your working time shorter or longer.. the 95-105f degrees is the right temps for color separation.. sometimes it may take 14 minutes to get up to temp.

    ok so I have watched to many to count videos on making pen blanks using resin etc your video is the first Ive seen talk about the temperature issue is this with all resins?

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  5 лет назад +1

      gulfmedic1 Yes. If you want the different colors to stay different colors you need to wait until a certain temperature to pour the different colors together. If you just pour them in together at a lower temperature they will just make a different color.. yellow and blue make green, red and white make pink, and so on.. for the resin I use in this video let the temp get to 98f. On longer pot life resins let the temp get to 120f. I hope this helps. I learned this from Pam Harris at Highland Boxes.

    • @gulfmedic1
      @gulfmedic1 5 лет назад +1

      @@JakeThompson just to be clear if i wanted to mix red and blue but i wanted the colors to stay original i would mix two batches of a and b then mix the batches together correct

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  5 лет назад +1

      gulfmedic1 You can do it that way. I usually will mix A and B together and get them fully mixed, then divide that amount in half into 2 different cups, then add the red to one cup and blue to the other cup. Then wait until they reach temperature and pour them together.

    Doesn’t your scale tare out? I would put the cup on and zero it out (tare) then add the part one, zero out the scale (tare), then add part 2.

    You have used the oven in the shop, more than you use the one in the house.

    Will help you to check video before uploading. You had repeated issues with focus which would have been clear if checked before uploading.

      Jake Thompson ok. Just a suggestion, love your work. A way to fix this i would use is to overdub in post with separately shot pics or video for the bits that aren’t quite right rather than a reshoot. Background audio doesn’t need to change.
