I have a Honda HRX 217 self-propelled mower. Was given to me, not able to keep running, usual suspects as I replaced the filter(s) cleaned out the fuel tank, then suspected electrical due to the time between startup and failure so replaced the coil. Nothing, would run strong and then act like starved for fuel, then I watched this video and thought why not...it was the plug. Thanks Jason, and guy who solved it.
My HRR216 would start fine, run for about five minutes, loose power, stumble and stall. Thought it was the fuel. Drained at the float bowl valve, re fuelled, no change. Took the carb apart, looked clean, blew out all the passages, reinstalled, no change. So I googled it, found you video, would not have believed a spark plug could do this. But three bucks later, it runs like new. Thanks for posting your video.
The engine is surging due to carb problem (the main jet is dirty) . Easy way is to add fuel additive--like SeaFoam to the gas. Let it run. It may help the problem. If you are mechanical inclined , you can take the carb off and clean the main jet. Also Honda engine may have a Pilot screw as well, you can adjust it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Three months into the mowing season, I was really frustrated that I've only gotten one mow in because of a bad carburetor. Then this weekend (after that one mow with the new carb) the danged mower wouldn't stay running. Bad rings? Wrong carb? Nope. Fouled plug. I NEVER would have guessed that a fouled plug would have behaved that way. Cleaned the terminals with an emery board and it runs as well as ever. Thanks again!
So far I've fixed my personal Honda mower and my neighbors Troybilt with the same problem by changing the spark plug. The first time I heard this was back in 2005 on RUclips. At the time it was hilarious and no one gave changing the spark plug any credence for this problem. And I've addressed this with many lawn mower problem solving RUclipsrs since. The normal suspect is the carburetor and so they go ahead and clean it and then they might as well change the spark plug while they were at it. I changed my neighbors spark plug on his Troybilt after finding this out and that Troybilt started immediately and ran like a champ. I simply changed the spark plug on my Honda Riding mower H3011 which was manufactured back in the 80's because it would crank but not start. Why? I don't know. I just know that if there is any problem I will change the cheap and inexpensive easy to replace spark plug before tearing into my carburetor. So I'm not surprised by this video fix.
Don't forget to check the (hidden) fuel strainer that is built into the hose at the bottom of the gas tank. It's a very fine filtering mechanism and can be easily cleaned.
I had an identical problem with my Polan mower with Honda gas engine. I was skeptical but replaced a spark plug (cheap ~$6 inc shipping) and it did fix my problem. My mower is now running like it was new.
LOL. Of all the comments I don't think I read one that suggested the spark plug. Glad your mower was fixed and you didn't listen to all these "experts."
It's amazing how much random/some times poor advise is given. Thanks for the update Kevin. Mine does the same thing but doesn't actually cut off. It will chug back and forth thewhole time. The choke will open and close repeatedly. I just gave it a full tune up with the exception of the plug because I assumed it was getting fine spark. thanks
Exactly what I was going to say. It doesnt take much scale or dirt to clog one of those small jets or other openings. Seafoam in the gas is a great start. The arm is the governor to keep it running at a steady RPM. When it starts to lose fuel flow, the RPM decreases...the arm then tries to increase the fuel to the engine to get the RPM back up. When it cannot, it dies. Seafoam in the fuel and MAYBE a shot or two of carb cleaner directly into the carb when running. Change the fuel filter also!
Yup that definatly seemed like a bad plug. When the electrode heats up its starts arching. What that governor is doing is trying to open up the throttle all the way which is its job. When the engine goes under load the governor opens up the throttle more to keep it at 3600 rpms and gets the most power our of the engine without running it full throttle. Which as a word of advice your engine is running a little fast
The are you are talking about is the governor, i.e. the cruse control that maintains the engine at a fix RPM. As your engine is slowing down, the governor is attempting to give more gas to maintain the RPM. You have to address the root cause of the engine slowing down, which is most probably a dirty carburetor. You should check the spark plug as well.
In my case the air filter was clogged. I have a lot of leaves in the yard and small leaf particles were sucked in over time and choked out the carburetor. Check the filter regularly and make sure the air filter cover is properly seated.
Not many people know that Honda hides an in-line fuel filter inside the fuel line where the hose connects to the gas / petro tank , remove the hose at the tank and check there first.
***** The filter on my Honda HRB476 is inside the tank at the outlet. Took fuel lines off and cleaned and never found any in-line filters. Cleaning the fuel lines solved the "hunting for fuel" problem with my mower.
I have a Easy Start GCV 190 and it had the same problem, starts-runs-dies. Honda uses a thermowax choke pusher mechanism . It's between the spark plug and choke lever and its easy to replace. It heats up and retracts after warming up and extends to normal length after cool down. Part number 16620-Z04-M41. ( round not square ) $10 bucks
OK agree, the carb is having a problem getting fuel through to the cylinder. When you clean it be sure to clean the fuel lines them selves. I had gunk buildup in my fuel lines as well.
I was having the same problem with my lawn mower and the problem was the engine was running to lean so i adjusted the fuel mixture by turning the screw on the front of the carb slightly to the left to give the engine a little more gas.
I have worked on a few of these hondas with the same problem, like many have said, clean the carb but also drain the gas tank as what cause this is debris, dirt or grass, in the bottom of the gas tank getting into the carb plugging the holes in it causing the engine to get no fuel and choke out. Some times even a few squirts of carburator clean into the carb will fix it, but it may take a few tries.
I had a problem with this same engine on my power washer. It would run about 15 seconds then backfire and die. would start right back up. Rebuilt the carb as i thought it was not getting gas properly. No change. Valves were way out of adjustment, so I adjusted them. Same result. Then i read on another site several people had said change the spark plug. I did that and it runs like new. Lesson, never overlook the basics. A $3 spark plug would have saved me a lot of time. It is also a good idea to check the valves every season or two an adjust. Doesn't take long and makes the engine run better.
Check your breather tube and make sure that its not split that can cause it to not pumo fuel properly. Secondly check to make sure your front most conection on the carb is attached that "rod"is your governer arm if followed to the carb it has a linkage check its connected properly and moves freely also check all the springs on the govern arm to check there not broken. Happy wrenchin'
Your problem is with the carburettor and throttle cable as the cable is making the carburettor shut off pushing it back killing the engine! I have the same mower just older in age and my does the same sort of thing except it revs back and forth when the engine is cold.check the bolt holding it in is tightened fully !
ive had this problem with other mowers, one easy fix can be the petrol/gasoline cap on the tank has no got a breather hole, or it is clogged, all you need to do is get a sharp knife or bradawl, and make a hole, this will fix it
that rod looks like a governor which is acting as its supposed to, because the engine is being starved for fuel. Problem is most likely in the carb with a blocked fuel jet or passage. Its an easy fix if you are careful to get all the parts back in their place after you clean it with fine wires. Its worth the time IMHO.
Could be your petrol cap. They have a small breathing hole in the rubber inside it. If the cap is tightened too much it squashes the hole closed. ~Make sure the hole is still visible. If not new cap.
always clean the air filter of oil and the filter box area first then try it with no filter in it.Also make sure that its not crappy gas(more than 6 mns old) gas turns really fast now cause of ethanol added to it.Even dump a tiny bit of 2 stroke oil in the gas for 4stroke motors cause it keeps gas and carbs from gumming up
I have the same thing happening and I think when I took the spark plug wire off I loosened the tiny metal cylinder piece at the end of the spark plug. I tightened it and will find out in the morning if that solves the cutoff problem.
That rod is a connector from the governor to the throttle. I would guess that either something is making the governor stick, or that the governor flutter is broken.
My Honda mower would start but then slow, sputter. and die after 15 seconds. I removed air filter and started and it ran better but still slowed and died. I pulled spark plug. It was black but not worn ( my Honda mower is only a couple years old and I have a small yard ). I replaced spark plug and same problem ( my other mower runs great with a 25 year old spark plug ). I started with air filter removed, sprayed a shot of carburetor cleaner into the air intake while running. Mower coughed and chugged black smoke for 30 seconds. I sprayed another shot. Mower runs great again! I have never had a spark plug change improve performance in a car or mower. Carb cleaner!
seems like your governor is broken or the weights may have flown off you could replace the governor or bypass it by hooking up a homemade throttle control
Hello, My mower stopped while mowing due to low fuel. And the it doesn't start so far even though I filled gas. I did followings for my not starting Honda engine mower. 1.replaced ignition plug and confirmed ignition works well. So no problem with ignition coil. 2.cleaned the carburetor twice following instruction. 3.Confirmed fuel is provided into the carburetor well. 4.replaced all gaskets around carburetor. 5.replaced air filter. 6.provided fresh gas. But my mower is not still work. If I installed the air filter, I cannot feel anything from the engine, but if the filter is removed the engine works two or three times irregularly and then stop. I can see backfire at that time. I bought the new Husqvarna mower just two years ago. Could you tell me what I can try to do anymore? Thanks.
The 1st time I heard 'changing the spark plug' as the solution I dismissed it. Then I had the problem and I couldn't keep my mower running and I changed the spark plug only because I read the posts to this video. My thought was a spark plug is $3 bucks and taking a carburetor apart was not going to be my 1st option. And it worked! But that just goes to show the very many DIYers out there that will 1st clean a carburetor rather than explore some easier fix 1st.
Could not tell for sure on your mower but my mower has a fuel shutoff that causes mower to die. Sounds like it is not shutting fuel off and makes it sputter and not die. Mine is a 1995 model Harmony and my only problem is that it is hard to start when cold.
Carb is the problem. I just got finished changing mine. $30.00 off of eBay it started up on 1/2 a pull. I also replaced the inline fuel filter with a Briggs type much easier access. I've started using no ethanol gasoline in all autos and power equipment this is what is killing all of these carbs. Ethanol is a big joke they say it is green fuel but @ 10% I got 15% less gas mileage.
It's hard to say without physically being there, but it seems that as you throttle up or down it can't run at the correct speed, either too fast or too slow, there might be a problem inside the crankcase with the little plastic gear with weights on it that is attached to that little lever arm, sometimes they throw a weight or something chews some of the teeth off, even if it's a little bit screwed up it can cause that to happen, this vid is old so you probably got it taken care of already.
looks like the auto choke Is the issue, or is it an older model without the auto choke, if so, then clean the carb and change the air filter on the carb. Should work.
Clean the carb first , and really clean it too and at last resort replace it . dump the gas out , change the plug if you want. - wouldn't hurt to replace it at once during the life if the mower - over rated to change every year - not a must . Remember maintenance is a must and don't let unit set outside , that's a no no .
Might be your muffler bearings. :-) My mower is acting up, too. Me thinks me might simply go with new carburetors on all my power equipment (getting real tired of trying to clean and fix em).
Bad gas.The new gas with ethanol absorbs water from the air.Mix fresh gas with a fuel stabilizer . Only store a months supply.Check your air cleaner filter
My HR214 will go to slowest speed and 'STOP' setting at the lever control will not stop the engine. I will replace the plug. And no one at all below mentioned the size socket the plug takes!
Mine was suffering the same problems. This lurching, stalling and quitting has nothing to do with the spark plug or the ignition. The armature you see moving is the governor attempting to regulate the fuel due to starvation. All it needs is to be removed and properly cleaned. Mine began do the same as your mower is doing in the video and then would not start at all because it could not get any fuel. The mower has a governor and it governs the air from the wheel what is at the end of the string. The governor might be Broke and need replacing. My mower governor to the end of the spring snapped and it ran like yours. It is hard to explain
I have a mower doing the exact same thing. I rebuilt carb., replaced plug, replaced filter, checked all electrical components, and now am ready to tear into mower. I think COLL1N has the answer. the shaft that that lever is attached to goes into the bottom end of the engine and is turned by a gear on the crankshaft and has a type of centrifugal system that will lower the rpm by turning that shaft counter clockwise and closing a butterfly on the carb, its just the engines governor and it doesn't seem to be why its shutting off, because when it started shutting down the arm went to the right which is full throttle.
RPM's sound too high when you started it . Most engines I have seen seem to be set lower rpm than yours ; I think that most Honda's last longer not just cause they're built better & have tighter tolerances but also cause they don't always scream at highest rpm's even when not needing the max power.
my honda runs just like that, but it doesn't rev up like your's did in the begining. end of summer it was fine, pulled it out after winter and it runs like your's. I can't even use it. What was the problem?
its your carburetor most likely water, dirt, bad air cleaner. something plugging the jets in the carburetor. you should take it in to someone who knows how to fix it.don't deal with okie mechanics as i like to call people who tell you that they can fix it but do wacky things to it.
Change the spark plug, When the plug gets hot the point seperates and loses spark, makes it sound like it is runnung out of fuel, I had rebuilt my carburator, changed the fuel filter and everything else I could do to try to fix, Honda used a cheap plug, GET A GOOD PLUG! Headache and problem solved...

It was the plug fouling out when it got hot.
The " arm" has nothing to do with the problem.

check fuel filter, probably carb runs out of fuel in the bowl because fuel is restricted somewhere like fuel filter or needle valve

the clicking noise is the blade is hitting the cover to the rear wheel drive also use only non ethenol gas in any small engine change spark plug
Hear a lot of Honda mowers surging. I think it’s a governor problem. I fix mine with a small wire keep the governor from jumping around!

Carburetor is not working properly. Probably a self adjusting carb. A new carb needs to be installed.

Jim Wu then why did it start to begine with
+Jim Wu Try marine gas... 91 octane with no ethanol. The only thing I run in my honda mower engine!! 13 yrs of trouble-free operation!!
My HR214 will go to slowest speed and 'STOP' setting at the lever control will not stop the engine. I will replace the plug. And no one at all below mentioned the size socket the plug takes!
Many of the answers here could have been the problem. Another thing to check is the muffler bearing.
***** that is great
***** It's either that or the blinker fluid.
Logic1972 this could have ALL been fixed with the 2x4 extender
ROFLMAO! I was gonna try something cute but you guys got it covered.
Alwayss the muffler bearing

It's most likely your carburettor mate just give it a clean with some proper carb cleaner and she should run as sweet as a nut
idle to high move the other end off the rodand bend it just a little bit back and it should smooth out
Sounds to me like you got a pulled up carburetor that needs a good cleaner
Throw a new carb on it. 25 bucks. Part mum 16100-z0l-013
I have a mower doing the exact same thing. I rebuilt carb., replaced plug, replaced filter, checked all electrical components, and now am ready to tear into mower. I think COLL1N has the answer. Have done ALLOT of research and have come too the same conclusion. The the goveronr system is designed, the weights are prone to failure or malfunction. Will let you know answer soon Thanks!
Did you ever find the problem?
WOW! Very high RPMs!!!!
the shaft that that lever is attached to goes into the bottom end of the engine and is turned by a gear on the crankshaft and has a type of centrifugal system that will lower the rpm by turning that shaft counter clockwise and closing a butterfly on the carb, its just the engines governor and it doesn't seem to be why its shutting off, because when it started shutting down the arm went to the right which is full throttle.
looks like the governor is trying to throttle down. clean the carb, adjust the governeor... place to start.
RPM's sound too high when you started it . Most engines I have seen seem to be set lower rpm than yours ; I think that most Honda's last longer not just cause they're built better & have tighter tolerances but also cause they don't always scream at highest rpm's even when not needing the max power.
check your brake cable separation at flywheel noticed you could not turn machine off should shut down in 3 seconds. BAD GROUND
Looks to be your throttle.
my honda runs just like that, but it doesn't rev up like your's did in the begining. end of summer it was fine, pulled it out after winter and it runs like your's. I can't even use it.
What was the problem?
Clean out the carburetor its gummed up or got crap stuck in the jet and needle dont mess with the governor
its your carburetor most likely water, dirt, bad air cleaner. something plugging the jets in the carburetor. you should take it in to someone who knows how to fix it.don't deal with okie mechanics as i like to call people who tell you that they can fix it but do wacky things to it.
So, what was the fix for the mower?
thats the giverner and the prob is carb and sparkplug
carb. Got stored with fuel in it. Main jet clogged.
Your Gastank couldn't get enough air so try it without cap.
So...what did you do to fix it??
Breather holes in the gas cap are clogged
A new plug fixed mine thanks ❗️❗️❗️
What fixed it????
i have the same problem with my honda mower ....
Make the cabals tighter
Thats the governer arm btw
it's the spark plug. i have researched this myself . don't buy the original NGK plug, cross reference the plug and buy another brand (Champion)
I know what it is! Your governor is wrongly adjusted!
Headache and problem solved...
use ngk spark plugs. hondas only can use those plugs
bad gas coil fuel filter clean carb and adjustment.
Try a new spark plug, bet that is it.
Try using Supreme fuel
keep it tuned up every year and you will never have any trouble with it
mack1ford not true
the spark plug
It idols way too high so the mower needs air to breath and is getting eigther too much or too little air, carbourator
