Quitter!!! Find the "high spot" in the shaft's rotation and give it a good bash with a 4lb. sledge. It is either going to straighten the shaft or not. If it does, then you have a usable mower, if not, then you can junk it.

UPdate ..it took me 40 minutes to fix the exact same lawnmower HRX537 EU marked ..today after hitting an old iron pipe from the tank in the ground .. it was shaking insane..shaking out of my hands and ran away but i wacked it with a heavy hammer..i know i know use a pipe to bend it but .. Dang now it runs nicer than ever..even the clutch is engaging much smother so i suspect it have been slightly bent before i hitted the pipe
I have actually seen a video by a respected RUclipsr where he scored a lawn mower with a bent shaft. What he figured is if the shaft got bent by the blade striking something, if he put an old used blade on it and smacked the blade opposite the direction the shaft was bent he might make it come good. I was pretty skeptical but really the whole operation when pretty easily and the shaft came straight with only one hard whack with a 3 pound hammer and a few extra taps to get it perfect! It's not perhaps the best for engine longevity BUT getting a few seasons out of a free mower is all gravy.
If you are in the business of repairing mowers, straightening crankshafts by any means is a huge liability. Even if you replaced the crankshaft you now have a reamed out upper and lower bearing sleeves from the bent crank. Like Motoforlyfe just said it goes in the junk pile until he can find a replacement crankshaft which I disagree with or engine which I do agree with.
I unbend one before with a few whacks using a sledge hammer, just do it lightly as you bend it to far the other way, doesn't take much and didn't notice the wobble on shaft afterward. Neighbor said hit a rock and was a new mower a couple weeks old literally, so was able to get it going again enough where it wasn't noticeable. Mower itself looked in good condition, so may have been worth throwing a new crankshaft in it worst case if you can't bend it back enough. Most lawnmower shop have the proper tool that goes against the frame and tighten against shaft to bend it back, usually they charge $30 bucks.
A good clue on the new blades is because it hit something while mowing that bent the blades and the owner decided to change the blades. I like your video. What a shame that you had to throw it away again!
I bought a new Craftsman mower a few years back for $200. Then a few months later bent the crankshaft hitting a rock while mowing a horse pasture. $50 bought me a new Briggs crankshaft and engine runs like new.
Thank you for your information, it helped me to make a decision on getting rid of my lawnmower and saved me money by not having to get it to repair it. I will be buying a new none.
Generally, no repair shop will attempt to straighten a bent shaft because the newer engines have a powdered metal pressed and heated instead of solid forged and turned on a lathe crank. They are then hardened by a special chemical bath and heated. Bending a shaft back usually results in snapping the shaft and also weakens the shaft creating a risk of it breaking off while in use. Its a liability to even attempt to straighten them.
Been working on these for longer than I want to say. But if the mower is new I replace the Crankshaft if it's older then I'll junk it. What is funny is that sometimes a guy will keep using it like that and complain that his arms are sore. Maybe it rattled his melon a little??
Damn! I was hoping I could huckleberry fix it. Mine is doing the same. I only had a 100 more square feet left in my final leaf pick up for the season then sudden the vibrations. Guess I am going to ask for a new lawn mower. I will take it into a professional to confirm my suspicions. But I TY for posting this.
We had also a 1 month old mower with honda engine that bent the shaft hitting a stump, never happened to our B&S engines while they where mowing roots and stumps every week
Yep, have the same mower. Hit a big rust hing, some threw in the grass. It runs now, but vibrated so hard, I have to tape the throttle in place. Might just use it, until it shakes inself apart.
Dual blade is for mulching efficiency... and it has those nice new blades because they lunched the blades into something so hard that it bent the crankshaft. I know this because i just bent the shaft on my brand new HRR216, literally 15 minutes into her service life because the dipshit who owned this house before us cut a T-post off along the edge of the yard instead of pulling it out, and despite walking the whole yard (overgrown) including perimeter i found the fucking thing with my brand new mower! Not stoked!, going to grab a beer now.
I see those honda mowers like this one all the time on offerup for $200+. A trash find for one of these is like finding gold. Just the blades and wheels alone will bring you $60+ on ebay. Or just straighten the bent shaft with a hammer.
for all the people asking to fix the shaft - a camshaft is probably $40-50 with shipping, gasket $10; oil $2; hour or two labor(make sure you have accurate torque wrenches and flywheel pullers) - so the total if you can do it yourself with no labor charge is minimum $60 assuming you don't have to buy any special tools - you have to do the job correct, hope there are no other bad components (values, connecting rods, bearings, etc) remember to bend the shaft it must have hit something hard Or for $40 more you can put a brand new hond clone from HF on it in 20 minutes. Even when you don't want to be a throw away society when the price of parts is equal or more than the cost of a new unit we become throwers - sometimes it's not that they don't make em like they used to +++ its when did parts get so high

No people, you cannot just wack the shaft with a hammer or use a shaft tool on those mowers. Those days have passed. The crank on all mowers is not made like the old days. The crank is made cheap so instead of bending, the shaft can snap due to the hardning process. Even attempting to bend the shaft back weakens the metal and runs a very high risk of snapping off even easier. If you read the repair manual from the factory, it even states the crank cannot be straightened. I wouldnt even risk it for my own use, let alone selling it to someone. Take the clutch off and straighten it with a bit of pipe. Won't take long, nothing to lose and you never know. I had an electric one for years. Was using it at my moorings at Bardney Lock when I picked up a bit of chain. Bent it a bit and vibrated, but still usable. Had women queuing up to use it lol.
Sir there is a tool that will straighten that shit up without removing the crank from the mower it's like a hand press. I would find that pr crankshaft
Personally -- I'd put a crank in it, as long as the bearing surfaces look OK, and a timing belt while I was in there. Run it for another 15 years & reevaluate. I'd be tempted to send the P.O. a thank-you card for the new blades, which I pay $28 a set for. The price on the crank is about $32, and around $14 for the crankcase sealant you'd need.
Always check the blades , NEVER know if old owner played with it and bolts are ready to fly off. I did scrap metal for 10 years (10 years ago!) Trust me... I found that out the hard way!!
Call the crankshaft and take it to the shop they only charge 15 bucks to straighten it. If it snaps the crankshaft off in the process of straightening it. They probably wouldn't charge you anything. But many crankshafts can be saved this way
I have a briggs n stratton with a very bad vibration. Will try a new blade b/c the one I have has one side slightly longer than the other due to hitting rocks n debris over the years. Its old and might be time to junk it too. Thanks for the video.
I have the same prob with vibration- when in idle, NOT when clutch is engaged. Im wondering if its the cable. It happened after I hit a rock. If ANYONE has the answer please tell me. Thank you. I have a toro mower.
EDIT: Scratch this question. I asked her again and she said she did run over the stump. So it's either a sledgehammer or the curb I guess. I have the same mower. It worked beautifully for about 5 years, until my wife ran it into a stump (not over a stump, just an impact against the housing). It doesn't shake enough to throw the air filter cover, but it's definitely not right. Is an impact to the housing enough to bend the shaft? Is there some other likely scenario from a hard crash?
Could engineers get away with making one of their highest priorities that nothing on their product is easy to damage by accidentally adjusting too hard by hand?
Good video but in my opinion if you got the know how it would be smart to replace the crank. They're about 25 dollars, and it would only take about an hour or two if you know what you're doing. That's an expensive mower!
You can buy a new crankshaft for about $25. I have also straightened crankshafts with about the same about of bend using a floor jack handle although none with a BBC system . Some guys use a drilling hammer.
without taking it apart you could see the bolt in the end of the shaft was turning off circle aswell. you could heat the shaft with the acetelyne torches and attempt to re straighten it
@@pimpinpenz it's okay, was just a thought. So you can just pop out the seal and insert a new one. cool. I have not much chance of bending the shaft where i am. I was aware of this prior to purchasing it. Just be wary when mowing and not hit rocks or tree stummps! lol Cheers!
Hi, Can you take that Honda engine apart as a show and tell of how it is put together? I could find another video I guess where someone has already done this. Thanks for the video. You do a good job.
Hey I had one more question about the timing chain tensioners for the 4.0, I changed the one that goes in the side of the block and it seemed to have fixed the rattle but the threads were messed up pretty bad and needed cleaned, but for the top tensioner I took off the thermostat housing and the intake hose and saw that there's some wiring harness right behind the top tensioner that won't let me get to it and i can't get them off unless I take the intake manifold off, did you have this issue?
i think these newer cranks aren't made as well as old ones , they bend so easy when hit something, briggs & stratton the same way, i replaced a bent one while back and was around $50 for new crank.
I had a customer that went out and bought a brand new Honda mower. She had it an hour and hit a buried pipe in her yard that she KNEW was there but didnt mark it. She bent the crank. I was able to straighten it as best as possible and told her to check the oil often because the bearing seal will start leaking because of the bent crank. Last I knew she was still running it. It had a slight shake but nothing like when I first got it. I know a small engine shop with a shaft straightening tool but he told me the new mowers cranks are powder pressed metal and then hardened so they snap when you try and straighten them. Also, afterwards, there is a high risk of them snapping off because it is weakened from straightning. I would strip that Honda down to the block for parts. The frame alone is worth more than scrapping it. The transmission and everything is worth it.
@@motoforlyfe I hate stripping them down for parts and some are not worth it but that Honda is. I had a friend give me one last summer. It smoked like mad so I assumed it had a broken ring or something. I just pushed it behind the shed hoping to find another engine for it. A week ago I pulled it back out, tipped it over and drained all the old gas out of it. I refilled it with fresh fuel. It started on the first pull, smoked for a minute and stopped smoking! I honestly think it just had a stuck ring! I mowed the lawn twice with it and ran a quarter tank of fuel through it. Still no smoke! Well, now the wheels lock up when pulled backwards. I ordered replacement right and left axle supports for it and sanded down the shaft. I got the wheels to turn but my guess is the teflon inserts are toast. As the mower was free, anything I do is ok. I have someone that wants it badly. Its a rear bagger 3 speed Honda Harmony 2 216. I accidentally broke the shifter for the 3 speed when I tipped it up under my trailer to pressure wash it. I will make about $140 in profit from selling it as I had it priced at $180. At least it will have a few new parts. The double mulching blades were brand new on it too.
bummer about the bent crank! i got a john deere js25 that was the same way. pretty nice little mower. its got a briggs, am hanging onto it until i come across a motor to put on it
Can anyone tell me what model honda mower this is? I have the same one but there's no label on mine so I can't find the model to be able to order parts for it.
I know a crank for a Kohler engine is around $100 cdn ($75 US). Sadly often not worth doing when princess auto/harbor freight puts whole new engines on for maybe 30% more.
I think these things are prone to getting a bent shaft, A buddy of mine repairs these things and he gets a few in with the same problem. Recently my friend told me that Honda manufacturer these engines in china as well as Japan.
Thats a bad mower to be honest ive never seen anything like this but man that was crazy i had my earphones on full blast until that loud noise came to my ears
Honda mowers are prone for that because the keyway doesn't sheer off like its supposed to on most mowers. I am going to put a new crank in the one I have. Its not as bent as that one. Some small engine shops will attempt to straighten the shsft using a special jig but not if they are as bent as that one is.
@Liberty AboveAllElse Agreed. Forgive my comment if it was too obtuse to indicate my understanding of cost principles. To which costs were u referring and what amount did u attribute to each element? U also mentioned value which is more subjective.

+Streetstockcamaro Nope didn't have any issue like that, there wasn't any wiring harness in the way on my 02 or my buddy's 06
I have the same lawnmower and it vibrates the same I guess it’s common on these
That's a bummer about that shaft. If you part that thing out I may be interested in some parts for one of my mowers.
Delmont Industries LTD stay tuned for what we decide to do with it
Sounds good bud!
i think these newer cranks aren't made as well as old ones , they bend so easy when hit something, briggs & stratton the same way, i replaced a bent one while back and was around $50 for new crank.
Yeah I don't know what they hit with it but it sure bent a lot!
1966tnt The new cranks today are not being heat treated, to keep costs down.
This guy needs to watch some youtube videos that shaft can be bent back straight...
Thanks for the comment! I agree that parting it out wouldn't' be a bad idea!
The double mulching blades were brand new on it too.
bummer about the bent crank! i got a john deere js25 that was the same way. pretty nice little mower. its got a briggs, am hanging onto it until i come across a motor to put on it
nitrosport5 seems like it happens a lot with these mowers
Probably should take the transmission out of it anyway they probably cheap if you had to buy one
Can anyone tell me what model honda mower this is? I have the same one but there's no label on mine so I can't find the model to be able to order parts for it.
Looks like HRR216VXA self propelled
@@glennallen1519 Thanks, I sold that mower as-is 2 weeks ago.
Good video !
Weebles wobble but they -don't fall down- cause vibration.
John Ratko i think this is true...Haha Thanks John!
i just hit a pipe with the same mower .. trying to bending it back now
SO This is why i could never find any of your videos in the last little bit lol , you changed your name!!
StarPuss www.ToxicRedNeck.Com Yeah buddy, we changed it a little while back ☺
Did you know a bent crankshaft can be straightened?
That’s too bad. I might just be tempted to tear it down and see about a new crank. Honda makes great mowers.
I know a crank for a Kohler engine is around $100 cdn ($75 US). Sadly often not worth doing when princess auto/harbor freight puts whole new engines on for maybe 30% more.
Show us what it sounds like next time.
I think these things are prone to getting a bent shaft,
A buddy of mine repairs these things and he gets a few in with the same problem.
Recently my friend told me that Honda manufacturer these engines in china as well as Japan.
fairlane500 Based upon the other comments I think they're made with weak shafts!
@03:10 Brand new blades?. Shafts Fucked, lol
is that thing running vtec or what
Ten silnik można przewracać na prawą stronę.
maybe its still under warrenty with honda
Thats a bad mower to be honest ive never seen anything like this but man that was crazy i had my earphones on full blast until that loud noise came to my ears
The Hondas do have dual blades on them ones for mulching the other ones for cutting
How do you bend the shaft on that thing?
you hit something hard like stone or tree stamp.
Honda mowers are prone for that because the keyway doesn't sheer off like its supposed to on most mowers. I am going to put a new crank in the one I have. Its not as bent as that one. Some small engine shops will attempt to straighten the shsft using a special jig but not if they are as bent as that one is.
@@scottfirman that makes a lot of sense. Cheers mate. All the best from England.
"Gay Rage"? LDB? ROFL!!!!!!
Marshall Man I think I wanted to say gee-raj...haha
Great for parts!
all this work for nothing. why not getting a new shaft? that would be a great video too
mygiguser all what work? All he did was pull the blades and clutch. 3 bolts total.
@@richieschmidt6225 In our disposable society that was a lot of work. Why fix it when u can get a new one? Why buy used?
Omg your lawnmower is worst than mine
You have not even fixed it lol .wasted
I think his purpose was to diagnose, not fix the problem.
@Liberty AboveAllElse Not for a DiYer. Parts are cheap. It's the labor that kills ya.
@Liberty AboveAllElse Agreed. Forgive my comment if it was too obtuse to indicate my understanding of cost principles. To which costs were u referring and what amount did u attribute to each element? U also mentioned value which is more subjective.
@Liberty AboveAllElse ruclips.net/video/hxJPJ6JY0Pk/видео.html
🤷😂
Eso es la cuchilla tienes que cambiar!
why not break it down and bend the shaft back??? I'm prolly the gozillionth guy to ask this
U can straighten the cranks easy!
how can you straighten the crank
@@MyPiggieWorld look up small eng crank straightening on u tube, there's a guy that has a video showing it. He does it all the time as have I. He does videos with big fake teeth in. He's kinda funny
@@chaddickerson2369 Taryl.
Stolen mower maybe.
Did he just say gay raj 2:02
not worth fixing. bet they hit something with the old blade that warped the shaft then tried a new blade.
Ninja Master Exactly!
Who would throw away that nice mower? I would remove the engine. Save the carburetor & other parts & buy an engine for it.
A NICE
my lawn mower was the same as this one, with a bent crank and i mean bent, i found the high side and strained it with the hammer, worked perfect, runs with out a shake
bend the crank back again
What a waste
This video could have been done in less than 3 minutes. Too much bull shiut.
