Great piece of engineering well done.So nice to see someone not just replacing the motor. All the best to you all.
Thank you Martin!
Great video. No one wants to spend the time to make these adjustments anymore. Good job showing how to tighten things up.
Thanks mate :) I fully agree!
That's an amazing difference Tom, and thumbs up to Ken for advising you to go forward with the issue.👍👍
Absolutely Barry, I’ve learnt some great things from him!
Well done Tom, excellent repair and i am going to say you have eliminated the rod knock and given this engine new life. Should expect it to last a long time.
Thanks Wayne, let’s hope :) I’ll get it back from him in a year and take it apart and remeasure it!
@@VintageEngineRepairs It's been a year, any update on this engine and the rod noise?
Well worth it. Can’t put a price on the experience and knowledge gained by doing this. Great video
That’s very true!!
I like the incense smoke test. Nice job!
Thanks Stella!
Wow I never knew that could be done. Really interesting.
Thanks AJ!
I rebuilt a 25 ton commercial A/C compressor, and did the same thing to the connecting rods,,That compressor is still running 15 yrs later...
Bloody brilliant!!
Super repair Tom 👍👍 - if it runs for 30 min straight that engine will be good as new. Hope you had fun 🙂
Thanks Claus! I did buddy haha ;)
Reading the plug, yes it does tell you what’s going on inside. Never let me down on the mx circuit.
They can certainly give an insight can’t they!
This is a great video! Fabulous information on knocking mowers I have 😂
Awesome :) glad you enjoyed it!
Wow Tom, I can’t hear it but I’m thousands of miles away 😄
🤣🤣🤣
Sounds good to me nice job. Did you replace the rings?
Na I didn’t mate, but it certainly need them replaced! I didn’t want to invest any money into it honestly.
@@VintageEngineRepairs true enough and it doesn’t look like it uses much oil anyway
Smash the like button
Thanks Ken :)
Couldn’t hear anything over the engine. I have to disagree though, I think it is absolutely worth it. A good mower will cost you a few hundred dollars. Even replacing the crank and rod will cost you a couple hundred. This is a cheap fix, basically the price of a gasket and maybe the seal and you’re good to go.
Very true!
What size crank shaft outer diameter does the 25 horse 2500 Briggs and Stratton
I have no idea I’m afraid! I don’t have the engine any more.
If its making a noise, I can't hear it. Whats your confidence level on this being a long lasting repair?
Hey Scott! Hmm I have no idea honestly and no expectations. Some have told me they think it will last a long time, others think it may last a season. I have since learnt that I shouldn’t use lapping compound on ally so that may shorten its lifespan. I’m keeping an open mind but will keep everyone updated :)
Let me just add, this isn’t something I’d ever sell having done, but I would use it myself of course
@@VintageEngineRepairs Ya I figured that. Personal use or combat situation.
Combat situation?! I don’t understand 🤣
@@VintageEngineRepairs You know. If you needed to do it to save your life. I know lawn mowers don't really fit in that category but the skill set does.
I tried that smoke trick with a sparkler one time. Once the fire department got things under control, one of the guys came up to me with a bit of attitude. Seems that around eight gallons of freshly crafted moonshine in the back of the shed hindered their efforts somewhat.
Then the ATF showed up. 👍🍻
🤣
Well done,Mate!
Thank you!
So the knocking red mower was fixed.
And it magically turned green in the process. Interesting indeed.
Fugazy -ish.
I said I changed the deck as the red one is going to be used on another project. The engine cowling wasn’t put back on at the end as I wanted access to the governor which is hidden under that cowling. It’s the same engine… you think I’d go to that much trouble NOT to show the result? 😂
Thanks!!!
You’re welcome!
Use heavier oil, maybe straight 60 like Harley uses.
It wouldn’t have taken up that much clearance in this case
from red to green
It’s called cowling, see my other comments…
What did you use to compress the rings?
Where necessary I’ll use a plastic ring compressor, however, this cylinder has a tapered hole which means you can just feed it in by hand without the need for a tool.
Is it cost effective no but isn't it really the fact that you can that comes into play ? 👍
Spot on Bill! Thanks for watching :)
I see a red mower in the start with a knocking engine, and a repaired green one with no knock being shown as the repaired one. The engine even looks different.

@@VintageEngineRepairs True, I was wondering how that happened. lol I have a (I think) a very old Briggs & Stratton with a kick starter on it. Is there an email addy I can send you pics of it to help identify it? I have looked around alot on the web with no real success.
Wow hard one to believe, he has the red and small black plastic engine covers removed it is the same engine as Jake would say "there is no trickery here!"
@@VintageEngineRepairs Oh, forgot to mention in my other response. Why not just put in a shim to take up the clearance in the rod? My dad drove trucks way back in the day going through college and he once had to use an aluminum can piece as a shim in a diesel truck on the road side.
@@michaelkennedy2528 I have no idea about vintage Briggs I’m afraid, best to join a Facebook group, they’ll know instantly :)
I had an old Briggs & Stratton engine that had a knock,,i fixed it cheaper & quicker,,,,,instead of 30wht oil i used 90 wght gear oil,, was ho more knock........LOL
Hahaha yes that too 😂👍
I missed it, I slept in. 🙂
All good 😂
I fixed it by purchasing a green mower
Nice 👍👍
How much is "expensive?" Comparing a mew con rod to a short block or another engine, a new rod is cheap. A mew rodut, only if the journal is not out of spec.
They are between 55-75 Australian dollars for a new conrod!
