Today I had to pull the plug on a charitable program I helped start up several years ago - an unfortunate side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. A complete bummer. I received the news this morning that a good friend passed on last night from a massive heart attack at just 38 years old. Tonight God brings this beautiful song by Katie to help me understand that God’s will is supreme and so is his love for us. This hymn always brings me to tears because it acknowledges our sorrow in the separation of our loved ones yet looks forward to the day when sorrow will be forgotten and replaced by joy in the presence of the Lord. Today is my late sister's birthday, she's been gone for seven years now, also this month marks one year since my dad passed away 💔. I miss them so, but I'm comforted because I know they're both in Heaven. I'm so thankful to dad and mom for raising us up in the way we should go. I know we'll be together again as a forever family. This song really ministers to me some days nothing makes sense I've had to struggle to serve God for years but especially the past 7-10yrs we were homeless off and on for a while and we've struggled financially for a long time but when I look back I see how Jesus protected and took care of us when I couldn't see how He would come through!

This hymn always brings me to tears because it acknowledges our sorrow in the separation of our loved ones yet looks forward to the day when sorrow will be forgotten and replaced by joy in the presence of the Lord. Katie begins with a sigh and ends with a sigh, but then with a nod. What a beautiful rendition of this song, the perfect register, tone, and minor key, then the major key at the end.

Life is not good, but I am thankful for the blessings of a faithful and caring wife, and in knowing that the Lord is coming for us, maybe sooner than later ... I will be glad to hear the trumpet ...

Sacred music often has a great and memorable history behind it. In the late 1600s and early 1700s, Germany was predominantly Lutheran and experiencing a religious movement known as the Pietistic Revival. The Pietists emphasized living a virtuous Christian life, and encouraged their followers to express their devotion by writing hymns.
Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel was part of this movement, and likely came from an aristocratic family. She also may have belonged to an evangelical women’s seminary. Born in 1697, Katharina was a talented published poet and penned at least 20 hymns, including “Be Still, My Soul.” The text was sung to many different tunes, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that it was paired with its current melody.
Johann Julius Christian Sibelius, later known as Jean Sibelius, was a Finnish composer and violinist credited with having helped Finland create a national identity in the early 20th century during its struggle for independence from Russia. In 1899, he wrote a symphonic poem as a covert protest against Russian censorship. While much of the piece is energetic, representing the Finnish people’s national struggle, toward the end the serene melody of “Finlandia” is introduced. “Finlandia” became a national favorite when Sibelius reworked it into a standalone piece. Sibelius composed prolifically, but he also spent time reworking many of his old compositions. In 1927, Katharina’s hymn text was paired with “Finlandia,” and it remains the most well-known musical melody for the hymn today.

Today is my late sister's birthday, she's been gone for seven years now, also this month marks one year since my dad passed away 💔. I miss them so, but I'm comforted because I know they're both in Heaven. I'm so thankful to dad and mom for raising us up in the way we should go. I know we'll be together again as a forever family. This song really ministers to me some days nothing makes sense I've had to struggle to serve God for years but especially the past 7-10yrs we were homeless off and on for a while and we've struggled financially for a long time but when I look back I see how Jesus protected and took care of us when I couldn't see how He would come through!
