The music for ‘Be Still My Soul’ is a hymn-like section from the patriotic symphonic poem Finlandia written in 1899 by Finnish Composer Jean Sibelius.
Katharina Von Schlege (1697 - 1768) * wrote the original German lyrics “Stille meine Wille, dein Jesus hilft siegen“ in 1752 and the hymn was subsequently translated into English by Jane Laurie Brothwick (1813 - 1897) in 1855.
The tenors and basses of Mount Royal Kantorei began work on this inspiring arrangement by Calgarian Oliver Munar, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We love championing the local talent we have here in Calgary. Oliver is a member of Calgary’s professional Juno nominated choir, Luminous Voices.
The comforting lyrics of this hymn speak of faith and hope. Even when confronted with pain and suffering, we can persevere.
This arrangement was recorded at OCL Recording Studios in the spring of 2021. On September 27th, 2021 our singers gathered at Elbow Falls, Alberta and created a beautiful music video with the talented team from Media Pop Films.

No. PERFECTLY rendered! Perfectly, perfectly, perfectly on key. And with that thick, pronounced bass, it's simply one of the best choral groups I've heard yet. Most choral arrangements feature only the mid and top end and rarely feature such strong bass end.
But HERE! That FANTASTIC spread of the notes comes through and its SO satisfying to hear. What a magnificent choir!And Kudos to the Conductor!!!

I was part of the MRC youth choir for three years, from 2002-2004. I was lucky enough to work with David Ferguson for a couple years. At the time, Stephen Chatman's new and beautiful rendition of "In Flanders Fields", was our Remembrance Day Signature, and this song, was the Kantorei's. I was just floored when I heard how stunning the recording is. It's absolutely spectacular! We had another song called Sicut Cervus, 1594, by Palestrina, that we adored. And in 2020, they recorded it, and it is also pretty amazing, albeit not quite what now sings my soul is. It's kind of special to find out that two songs that I began with over 20 years ago, have continued to be respected treasures, to this day! This recording is really well-done! I would like to be part of the Kantorei, one day. It's expensive.

The MRU Conservatory has a very generous scholarships and bursary program, and unlike other choirs, your choir fees are tax deductible. The Conservatory also allows making payments in instalments.
