it's hard to tell something bad about the person on a wheelchair, but the true is that she's not a good singer, her body don't let her get high notes.. For me eurovision is the competition, where singers from different countries show their nation individuality. When I look at Julia and listen her song I see the country which is crying for help (it's not like Ukraine in 2016, their singer was сharismatic and she had really powerful voice and unforgettable perfomance).
I'm from Russia and we have a lot of talented singers like Elena Temnikova (she was in Serebro), Irina Dubtsova, Pelageya.. But we can't choose a singer for eurovision like in other countries.
btw Lazarev didn't want to take part in eurovision competition, but producer of our main russian channel told him that he had to
Suzanne, Julia was banned from Ukraine not because she was a threat, but because she broke the Ukrainian law. And if we talk about equality, everyone must obey laws, no matter the healthy or the disabled, the talented or not.

I'm from Russia and... i should be honest, i dont think that "Flame Is Burning" is a good way to represent Russia on Eurovision. This song is bad, and here in Russia many people was so surprised. Successful two years later Russia was represented by very famous and talented local singers (Polina and Sergey, of course), our expectations were higher than Julia Samoylova. Dont get me wrong, she is beautiful and talented young lady, but we should admit that her vocal abilities... no, wrong words, her diction destroys everything. Its not just accent (though he too), trust me, in russian she has same problems with her diction. And actually, i still cant understand why. I just hope that in 2k18 they will fix that problem and she will sing really good song (even if in russian). But "Flame Is Burning" is still bad. That will be all.

Yeah, I agree with u.
Russia is a force to be reckoned with. It almost always sends a great song that's able of winning.
But this year's song was very weak. I agree with +Foxreyna : they knew they were probably going to get disqualified for political reasons if they sent Julia (which was already banned from entering Ukraine), so they sent a mediocre melody. I hope you guys come back stronger in 2018 with a better song from Julia.

Russia have a tendency to copy what worked last year. In 2014 a ballad won so they sent a ballad in 2015 but then a pop song with a cool light show won so in 2016 they sent a pop song with a cool light show but then a song with political undertones won so in 2017 they got banned. This year an entirely non english song won so in 2018 they'll probably send a Russian song.

Russia was my second favourite before it was not allowed to go to Ukraine, which funnily enough Ukraine was my favourite that year.

I think the wheelchair really affects how people view this performance, either giving or taking away marks from the act itself. Personally, I take away marks, almost as a knee-jerk reaction to knowing that most people would pity or ease their judgment on this song.
Russia would have been somewhere in my bottom ten, though.

I may not have much in common with her opinions (here or of the top seven songs), but I like the format of this video where you showed the entirety of her watching the song being performed (while we did too) and then commenting on that performance in real time.

In my review I said that Russia was around #30 in my personal tastes. I do think she would have qualified and done quite well. I like her voice (as I have heard her sing before in Russian) but the song itself did not move me as much as some of the others. 7.5/10

I did find it her accent a bit distracting when I first heard the song but I've come to think it's nice for people's background to be reflected in how they sing rather than everyone aiming for generic accent
I kind of past over the song thinking it was a little boring and the accent a little too much but hearing Suz talk about shes right the lyrics are good and very moving. Oh and i really think you should send her to eurovision next year it would be great to see the contest from someone not so used to then contest.
It was interesting for us to hear a reaction from someone who hasn't been following the controversy at all. Also: I love the thought of Suzanne wreaking havoc in the press center. "Jan Ola Sand? Is he related to the beach?"

I would like to be a writer for wiwibloggs. I'm already writing my application e-mail, but while I'm writing it, I worry that i might not get in. I constantly doubt myself in anything, wether it's my personal life or my education. Two things are for sure if Yulia wasn't banned. First, she would have picked a lot of jury points allocated to the top 5 acts. Second, "Krisomanki", the teen girl fan cohort of Russia's Kristian's supporters would have been able to vote. I think this could have been somewhere between 70 000 - 100 000 more votes for Kristian. Also Italian music is big in Russia so guess what results would have been. My guess:
1. Kris; Gabbani: Yulia - in any order.
Boris Rangelov I doubt that Salvador would lose the first spot.
I'd say that it would be:
1. Portugal
2. Bulgaria
3. Belgium
4. Russia
5. Italy
To be honest I was let down by Rusia this year, I don't like the melodic line of the song and I think Yulia has got 0% charisma. I want Russia to _amaze_ me in the future

Ioαηα Well, the comparatively weak song (i.e. compared to A Million Voices or What If, the other two ballads by the same composer, Leonid Gutkin) is part of the evidence for the theory that Russia never really wanted to participate in the first place (they also hadn't booked a hotel in Kiew, didn't show up to mandatory meetings etc.). So I guess they didn't want to waste a lot of money on a song which they knew was never going to be performed on a Eurovision stage anyway 😉.
Say what you want but this would've been top 3 if it wasn't disqualified.

But to answer your question: it probably would have made it into the final, but i can't see it finishing in the top 10. I don't share your sister enthousiasm for the song. If this would beat Alma or O'g3ne, there's some serious injustice in Eurovision :-). But end up around 15th, with Dihaj, Lucie or Jacques: why not.

For me, Russia was not in my top 26 this year. Maybe next year in my top 26, but i think it will not, because the song is a little boring.
I don't mind the song. It's not dated..it is fine. The melody and the message is ok. But yes, my problem is her accent is too strong u can tell she doesn't speak English and therefore the whole things seems forced and not genuine to me. If Julia sings in Russian, even if i won't understand, I probably would like it more.
I hate the whole situation that Russia has created. I do not like the song, it seems that it was written in 5 minutes. I think Samoilov was sent for provocation. This is a great shame for Russia

I'd rank russia about in the middle, close to the Netherlands, maybe below because Netherlands song is more dynamic. The lyrics are inspirational but rather ordinary.

I agree, this song is great and the performance is great. It is a pity that she did not have the chance to sing this song at Eurovision! She will most likely be in ESC 2018, but will the song be as good as Flame is burning? To bring politics in this competition does not benefit anyone.

And I agree, first thing I said was Julia's accent was distracting. It was all decided too fast and she did not have much English coaching before this recording. Yet she was rehearsing. Meanwhile that Cypriot dude who doesn't have a body-paralysing condition and his accent was a "terrible" as some say was Julia's. Glad he was placed right before the UK so it was even more obvious 😀 I call his song a pure generic tragedy but alright then. We'll see Julia next year, nice!

it is diffcult to say where i would put Russia if they were not elimiated this year.
Most likely not top 10.
I think most of the songs this year sounded better in their home final selections or studio versions than their actual stage presentation in Kiev.

I liked this song, one of my favourites. Such a sweet song and pleasant. Sad it was disqualified. Before someone says it was a ploy by the Russian broadcaster I don't care. It's an ugly mess there. This song has a nice melody and message.

Wonderful video. Definitely Russia would have been in the top. With Russia there we would have had a very different top. Especially because Russia would have taken a lot of the vote that went to Portugal (and yes you know it is true ... Sympathy ... ) . And a little out the vote for Bulgaria perhaps... So big lost without Julia ...

Russia won in 2016 (on vote) but EBU input the political jury and won Ukraine which violated two rules of the contest of Eurovision. First - it is was political song. Second - the song was performed long before the contest (outside the permitted time). After a petition on the change*org, the video with fact (evidence) of singing was deleted.
