I got one and loved it. Lost it at work. Got another. Then went to get a backup…Went to Amazon to get it… came in a plain white box. Knew immediately it was knock-off when I saw box. (It comes in a clear plastic pack that has Streamlight Logo on real one.) Sent it back. Went to Bass Pro and got another one. Just picked up one for my wife again yesterday.
I like it so much that I have 2 with the hack (just in case I lose one). I added a key ring to make it "tactical" so I can rack the slide of my gun in case of a malfunction without dropping the flashlight. The fact that the switch is stiff helps to work with it as if it was momentary-on like a true tactical light. I have a SUREFIRE with a Chris Costa tactical ring but it is too chubby, for comfort I keep coming back to the little STREAMLIGHT.
For the variation there are 3 gens of the Microstream 28, 35 and 45 lumens. So this will also have something to do with it how much you will get out of a 10440. I would be more interested how much nimh or 1.5V lithium increase the runtime. The rated 2.5h are for alkaline. But I couldnt find any information about this.
Bad incident to report, with the rechargeable batteries, the flashlights stop working without warning. Maybe the increased power damages something. It happened to my 2 units with different rechargeable batteries.
You got it backwards on how rechargeable batteries deliver power they actually in most cases provide a lower voltage (around 1.2-1.3 volts but most are rated for 1.2 volts on average with Ni-mh) then a lithium battery In some cases lithium batteries out of the box have 1.6 volts on the rare occasion now the ones that deliver higher voltage are called 10440(basically a lithium ion aaa) and 14500(lithium ion aa)(both being rechargeable cells both require the manufacturer to indicate that your light is rated for the increased voltage. To me it doesn't seem your batteries killed it but your light's just failed out of either some manufacturing defect (myriad of things can go wrong).
Have the 35 lumen version and it overheats and shuts down. It eventually gets so hot that it only turns on for a couple seconds before shutting off. Thought I burnt the light out but it started working like normal with basic aaa's after cooling down.

Just checked mine out in the truck. It was hopelessly battery corroded to the point where I had to open it with pliers. Threw it out and will get another. Battery corrosion like that is on me (the user)-nothing against the flashlight. Just check out your batteries.
I have an Olight and a Streamlight MicroStream USB. The Olight is ALOT brighter. Runs on a AAA battery, MicroStream charges USB. Full charge it's just as good as the Olight but 5 min In it's done. Back to dull. At this point I think my Streamlight is broken. It works, just dull. Olight for the win here

I just got one yesterday. Does the 10440 battery burn out the circuit, bulb, etc.?
Hasn't yet and it's been months. But Streamlight says not to so make a good decision haha.

send it back and see if the new one is different, Streamlight's customer service has been awesome in my experience.
