Hi. This is Wayne Johnson, owner of Elektro Lumens. Today I received a flurry of emails of people requesting to buy this flashlight from me. First I want to say I have discontinued designing and building flashlights, altogether. So, if you happen to own one of these rare flashlights, hang on to it, maybe even hide it. I have had a number of people contact me, telling me it was stolen out of their vehicle, and they wanted to purchase another. I had to tell them I no longer make it, it is unavailable for purchase. So my reply here is not so long, I am not going to go into the long story of this flashlight. Possibly some of the details I cannot reveal. But, Google contacted me about this flashlight I was building and selling at the time. They wanted to give one to all their employees as a gift. They helped me improve it, we spent much time improving the design, bringing the dimensions to be exact and precise. We co-produced the flashlight, and they were given to, according to all Google employees worldwide. I probably should not say the exact number, but it was thousands. I personally had a real blast doing this project. I got to go down to Google in Mountain View with my family, spend the day there, eat at some of the free restaurants at the Google facilities (more like a small city), see so much of their facility, absolutely fascinating. A rare opportunity and wonderful time I'll always treasure. I will not mention any persons names here, that I know and met there. The LEDs used are Cree MCE LEDs, (now discontinued. In most states bright flashlights are not illegal, they are only limited by law enforcement in case someone is using it to shine at people or vehicles to cause vision difficulty or other dangerous situations. But there is no restriction until it gets to the laser class (most flashlights are not in this class including this one). But one reason they may not be sold retail is due to limited manufacturing abilities or other similar reasons.
I love how most of this comment section is people going oh yeah, 3000 lumens for that size is not amazing. Adam literally said over ten years ago, if anything develops and improves like a wildfire it's technology so well duh, that's not a comparison that needs to be made. Ten years of PC tech is also an astounding difference in price, power and size.
I once mounted one of those 100 watt cob led under my quad copter and flew it during the night. It was a thing of beauty till I blinded myself and ran it into a building, but for a brief moment I was totally amazed at how bright it was in the sky.
I had a flashlight very similar to that a few years ago, my coworkers nicknamed it "The Hand of God". I have moved on to a different job but I hear my old flashlight has become a legend. I remember illuminating the side of an entire apartment building like a spotlight.
I have a custom flashlight I built years ago that accidentally turned on while it was sitting on my TV (old fat TV), it burnt a hole through the case... Also, like I'm glad other flashaholics have pointed out, things have evolved a lot since back then, 3000L is pretty pedestrian these days. You should get into this hobby, Adam :D
If you have one you might need to set a jumper to get full brightness -- to err on the side of safety, we delivered all lights with the jumper set to half brightness, so it needed a manual change to become the "real" flashlight. Would be cool to see a collab with the Touque Test Channel to see how the Firesword stacks up (obviously not the destruction test) to see what the actual lumen output and candella power is of this illuminator.
FIrst thing that came to mind: “The Galvanick Lucipher is of antique design. Ghnxh, who is about a hundred years old, can only smile in condescension at Waterhouse's U.S Navy flashlight. In the sotto voce one might use to correct an enourmous social gaffe, he explains that the galvanic lucifer is of such a superior design as to make any further reference to the Navy model a grating embarrassment for everyone concerned.” - Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon
The RG-2 or fire stick outputs 3000+ lumens. Fenix flashlights can output 12,000 lumens. Check it out on their website. I’ve got 7 of their flashlights. My 3,000 lumen flashlight is rechargeable!
I don't know about the brightness but there is a consumer safety standard for how hot a flashlight can get. my company got a couple dozen pallets of flashlights returned because the lights were handwarmers when they're turned on. They gave them out for christmas
Great video! I discovered it while searching for information about my Firesword, which I received as a Google employee. I never use it, partly because I have kids and it's legit dangerous. There's a jumper inside it to switch between its two brightness settings. I tried the brighter setting ... once. In broad, sunny daylight, and the spot was visible on the sidewalk.
While watching this as you said "you never want to do this to a person" I accidentally shined my 5300 lume flashlight directly into my eyes. Streamlight Protac HL-6 if you are wondering.
I was going to kid you about...When that Google employee got home he was laughing, saying I can't believe he bought that 'Fire Sword' crap. Then I clicked on the link, OMG there really is such a thing! LOL
That's getting serious. Olight is right behind acebeam and imalent for power, but I heard that the X9R marauder was actively cooled. Is that still a thing?
@@tengland84 What is the max continuous output? For the acebeam X70 it's 6000 lumens without cooling and 15000 lumens with cooling. For the imalent MS18 it's 25000 lumens with cooling.
Was gonna say my Olight PL Pro is 1500 lumen, and my Warrior X Pro is 2250. Both are MUCH smaller than this thing. The X9R is a beast though. Maybe someday I'll grab it to have incase the sun doesn't come up.
IIRC Cree leds are class 2 lasers and if you use bigger 18650 batteries that have over 3000mAh, you should get more than 9 minutes run time. Because the batteries are stacked like normal batteries, you're creating a series while with careful wiring (probably 30 gauge in that chassis) you could run them in parallel with the high capacity 18650 for longer battery life. While you're doing that, you could mount a recharge port... but I don't think that machined chassis has enough room for all that. Maybe a custom chassis. The Custom Saber Shop probably has enough parts to make a comparable cree flashlight as a project. Or a cool custom lightsaber.
Emisar is truly the king of budget enthusiast flashlights. I can hang the short version of the D4V2 on my keys and it still has more lumens than Adam's flashlight!
"I have a super bright flashlight!" Cooooool, I want a super bright flashlight. "It lasts nine minutes and requires it's own heat sink" ...maybe I'll get a maglite...
I can imagine the effect of such a light. I used to have a pair of aircraft landing lights on my car. It was obvious to me when I first used them that such bright light was a bit dangerous if used irresponsibly. They were bright enough that they would light up the road half a mile like daylight and if you stood in front of one of them that your pant leg would start to smolder.
Bright but there are some pretty incredible advancements in this space. There’s probably brighter but the Olight Marauder for example is 25000 lumens compared to the Fire Sword’s 3000.
Poor Adam hasn't discovered r/flashlight yet. If you know, you know. I have a flashlight a quarter of that size that can output double the light. Google D4V2 or SP36
I have a Streamlight Protac HL5-X...3500 lumens. First thing 10 year old me did was to shine it in my eyes. After 5 minutes of blindness, 44 year old me said, "That'll learn ya."
Awesome, I have one as well. It was given to a lot of us in the network and data center teams. It's fantastic and I keep it charged by my bed. It's built buy a guy in Oregon who retired.
The Emisar D4 and Noctigon KR4 are very similar to the FW4A in the same sort of $40-$50 price range, but can reach 4300 lumens (or almost 8000 lumens if you go for the 8 LED mule option with no focusing optic). All of these are a lot more compact than this flashlight, and very practical for EDC at more sensible output levels thanks to having stepless brightness ramping. We've been talking about this over on Reddit's r/flashlight and would be happy to lend our knowledge if you're interested, Adam. The technology has accelerated like you wouldn't believe since the time when the Firesword was made! Other options if you want to spend a little more for longer runtime and yet higher output: $70 or less gets you the nearly 6000 lumen Sofirn SP36 BLF Anduril edition, with very nice high CRI emitters. $90 gets a Noctigon K1 that can throw a lance of light an insane 1 mile (1.6km) $99 gets you an Emisar D18 - 14,000 lumens to turn an entire field to daylight and still a lot smaller than the Firesword. $700 for the most powerful production flashlight, the 100,000 lumen Imalent MS18. You do not need this kind of power, but you want it... :D
I've got the Noctigon KR4 as an EDC torch and it's brilliant. 3000 lumens and pocket-able. The Firesword looks awesome from a cool factor point of view, but not a high end performer nowadays.
Well...I own a flashlight that uses only ONE of those batteries you dropped into your Firesword and it is rated at 2000 lumens. It's also less than 6 inches long. Things have changed significantly in the flashlight world over the past few years. There are now plenty of lights that are as bright and several that exceed it in output, by several times. Crazy isn't it!?
I have a soft spot for Streamlight, their ProTac LED 1AAA is a part of my EDC for work, and I have an older PolyStinger that I rescued from one of my tech school instructors (he was going to throw it away because it didn’t work, but all it needed was a new lens and battery) for when I work on vehicles in my home garage.
I was fortunate enough to have gotten one of these flashlights while I was an intern at Google. I think the craziest thing about this entire story isn't how amazing the Firesword-V is (and it *is* amazing). The crazy thing is that I believe this Google variant is NRTL listed. From what I understand, one of the engineering organizations at Google discovered the Firesword-V and wanted to place a big order to give out as a holiday gift. However, Google being a major company, you can't just give everyone a (potentially hazardous) gift without following all of the rules. That meant that, in order to give these out to Googlers, they had to be tested and listed by an NRTL. I believe Google worked with the creator to go through the process of getting the Firesword-V listed, which actually involved some design changes. Anyone who has been through this sort of thing can tell you that NRTL listing is not cheap, and it's not something you usually do for a few thousand units. There are brighter flashlights now, but to me this is really special because of all of the effort that went into making this possible.
I collect custom EDC flashlights. It's crazy how bright lights have gotten in the last ten years. I have a small EDC pocket light that's puts out roughly 500 lumens more light than the firesword.
The mining company I work for have been using NiteCore and other brands with 4000+ lumen output for a few years. Useful when doing inspections underground or as replacement for flashes in large stopes. First comment from a coworker when seeing it: "It's a lightsaber".

It would be great if you could test the lumens coming out of it to quantify the claim. Also, I'm a bit skeptical that considering it has 9 hours of battery life that it would have been used during an extended blackout to provide lighting for an intersection
Quite a few years ago I was a Flashaholic. We were flashlight enthusiasts who would own, build, and/or make flashlights because they were fun to have and use. Some of us were more concerned about raw output while some liked the quality of the light produced or how far it could throw, etc. I was never really into high power lights but I was asked to modify a few D call Maglites into some really bright lights for it’s time. My brightest was a 2000 lumen direct drive 3D Maglite with a 1lb copper heat sink that I was never able to reproduce on a second example. I still have the second high bin SST-90 LED that was bought at the same time as the 2000 lumen emitter. Maybe it’s time to build another one? Adam, you want to build a flashlight?
Oh so when you are a flashaholic its "wow nice flashlight" and "its so bright" but when im a flashaholic its "pull your pants up" and "there are children here"
This flashlight was rechargeable, had a wrist strap, a retractable hanging bar, a magnet for hanging it, a broad main LED light, a swivel head spot light, and a bottle opener on it for......$18. Sadly, not sold anymore. But the point is, it's not just about which light is the brightest. The nice broad and soft LED light was good for working on things vs a bright spot that left harsh shadows. Plus a way to hang it, etc.
If you want an awesome keychain flashlight you should really look at the RovyVon Aurora line of flashlights. I have no affiliation with them but I have one that I'm just thrilled with. I have just the base plastic A1 model, it's usb rechargeable, good tactile feel and peak output somewhere in the 500lumen range from a flashlight very nearly the size of a AA battery.
This, please, some kids almost killed me while I was biking because they decided blinding someone crossing a bridge with a 2 inch guardrail was a good idea, they were also shining them at cars
Yeah I have the whole left wall of my garage that has a work bench with pegboard and a big roll top tool box that was given to me by my dads co workers after he passed. He maintained machinery at a manufacturer of breathing apparatus so there are all kinds of tools that have been repurposed to fix tools. Sometimes my 20 month old boy goes out with me and we just rumage through and see what interesting doodads are in it. So long story short, I also appreciate random tools and could tell a short story about some of mine too. Huh, I suppose I just did! I really do feel like the "didnt go to college" version of Adam sometimes. I think thats why he is fascinating to me.
Rather than continue to show favorite tools that only cause people to lust after them, I think it would be a good idea to show people how to be [more] resourceful. Maybe how and where to find useful materials to build things from or how to use common tools you may already have. Having the same abc as xyz will not necessarily make you better at building but just better and wishing for more stuff and spending money.
Adam was supposed to come to FanX in Salt Lake City this year. I am so sad because I am sure they will cancel it. He was the first guest I was excited enough to get a picture with...... I was actually going to finish my cosplay finally and tell him he gave me the courage to let go of my fear and wear cosplay in public! Someday.
I got a kitlist for my uni course that included a flashlight, and so a flashlight i bought. Got an Acebeam X80-GT which is basically the same in this structurally, though with an extra 4 LED's and in a more compact form. For reference, according to specs the Firesword was 3000+ lumens, while the x80 is about 32,500. The fact that my torch wasn't even that expensive just shows how far technology has gone since when adam got this.
As a lifelong New Yorker I can say I never saw these things used as street/traffic lights during any blackouts and what would be the point? As you said they have nine minutes of battery life.
I bought a "Superbright" 16-LED from China off ebay. It's probably just as bright or brighter. It has 16,000mAH Li-on batteries and cost about $50 shipped. But, that flashlight is insane for a few years ago.

Ten years of PC tech is also an astounding difference in price, power and size.
Except he's talking like it's still the most amazing thing ever, when it's REALLY not.
In ten years LED flashlights will be for pussies, everyone will use LEP (laser excited phosphor) flashlights.
Mark my words.
I look forward to it.
Someone needs to show him modern high end flashlights. He’s gunna freak.
I once mounted one of those 100 watt cob led under my quad copter and flew it during the night. It was a thing of beauty till I blinded myself and ran it into a building, but for a brief moment I was totally amazed at how bright it was in the sky.
No you didn’t.
I believe you
I had a flashlight very similar to that a few years ago, my coworkers nicknamed it "The Hand of God". I have moved on to a different job but I hear my old flashlight has become a legend. I remember illuminating the side of an entire apartment building like a spotlight.
The Google Neuralizer. Agent J would be jealous.
Shocked how little Adam understands about flashlights.
Heads up, Adam. That flash can trigger seizures in rare individuals. I know of two such people. It's no joke.
Adam, you made a video for a flashlight and you never took it into a dark room to illustrate it's brightness? 🤦♂️
Seriously wtf
With how bright this is, it may have been more prudent to take it to a sunlit driveway to demonstrate.
I am obsessed with having good lights
The RG-2 or fire stick outputs 3000+ lumens. Fenix flashlights can output 12,000 lumens. Check it out on their website. I’ve got 7 of their flashlights. My 3,000 lumen flashlight is rechargeable!
I don't know about the brightness but there is a consumer safety standard for how hot a flashlight can get. my company got a couple dozen pallets of flashlights returned because the lights were handwarmers when they're turned on. They gave them out for christmas
in my hand as I watch this video is a d4v2 with SFT40's pumping out around 10,000 lumens, granted only for a few moments before ramping but still
Great video!
Your Joy is infectious. I always crack up at how happy things like this make you. Keep on spreading your personal Joy plague we need it.
I was going to kid you about...When that Google employee got home he was laughing, saying I can't believe he bought that 'Fire Sword' crap. Then I clicked on the link, OMG there really is such a thing! LOL
Adam you have to get the Olight X9R Marauder. It has 25,000 lumen capability. Would love to see you review it on the channel and see what you think.
That's getting serious. Olight is right behind acebeam and imalent for power, but I heard that the X9R marauder was actively cooled. Is that still a thing?
John theux yes it has active fans that cool the light when on the highest power
@@tengland84 What is the max continuous output?
For the acebeam X70 it's 6000 lumens without cooling and 15000 lumens with cooling.
For the imalent MS18 it's 25000 lumens with cooling.
John theux the X9R will put out 25,000 lumens continuous but only for a couple minutes. Once it starts over heating the lumens drop down
Was gonna say my Olight PL Pro is 1500 lumen, and my Warrior X Pro is 2250. Both are MUCH smaller than this thing. The X9R is a beast though. Maybe someday I'll grab it to have incase the sun doesn't come up.
If this was in those typical zombie apocalypse games with dark corridors, it probably be an end-game weapon.
You should give that to the Torque Test Channel. They have started testing the lumen output of flashlights lately. Would make a great video for them!
I own a firesword! Did they make you sign the waiver?
Check out Emisar lights, the tech has advanced so so much in recent years.
Emisar is truly the king of budget enthusiast flashlights. I can hang the short version of the D4V2 on my keys and it still has more lumens than Adam's flashlight!
EMISAR is the daddy of all flashlights not just budget...
i have a emisar d4, like damn i forgot how bright it was. like hell. how can such a tiny flash light contain so much power.
@@BloodSprite-tan Emisar D4V2 destroys the D4.
Haja I was just commenting about my d4v2 before I saw this.
Thank you for shedding some light on this incredible flashlight!
We "see" what you did there!
"I have a super bright flashlight!"
Cooooool, I want a super bright flashlight.
"It lasts nine minutes and requires it's own heat sink"
...maybe I'll get a maglite...
Go check out olight
My edc flashlight is a Wurkkos TD03 and i love it. I also have a wuben T1 that's insane
Dam that's brite wouldn't mind if I had 4 of them as security lights around my house
Bright but there are some pretty incredible advancements in this space. There’s probably brighter but the Olight Marauder for example is 25000 lumens compared to the Fire Sword’s 3000.
"at the google" I giggled
I am a flashlight nerd and I've never heard of this! I would kill to get one!
3000 lumens, cute.
-Flashlight nerds of 2020
Poor Adam hasn't discovered r/flashlight yet.
Sounds like ElecktroLumens
Adam, buy a Lumintop Fw4A with a samsung E35 battery, you cant yet any brighter in a pocketable form-factor (3600 lumen, single 18650)!
Other options if you want to spend a little more for longer runtime and yet higher output:
$70 or less gets you the nearly 6000 lumen Sofirn SP36 BLF Anduril edition, with very nice high CRI emitters.
$90 gets a Noctigon K1 that can throw a lance of light an insane 1 mile (1.6km)
$99 gets you an Emisar D18 - 14,000 lumens to turn an entire field to daylight and still a lot smaller than the Firesword.
$700 for the most powerful production flashlight, the 100,000 lumen Imalent MS18. You do not need this kind of power, but you want it... :D
The imalent MS03 has 13000 lumens and it's a single cell EDC (everyday carry) flashlight!
I've got the Noctigon KR4 as an EDC torch and it's brilliant. 3000 lumens and pocket-able. The Firesword looks awesome from a cool factor point of view, but not a high end performer nowadays.
The MS03 looks a little bulky for my pocket but you're not wrong. Crazy power in such a tiny package.
r/flashlight is leaking again..
'Never do this to a person' 3:20
*Blinds the entire internet in a millisecond*
Seeing that on a 1000nit monitor would probably blind you 😂
I have a soft spot for Streamlight, their ProTac LED 1AAA is a part of my EDC for work, and I have an older PolyStinger that I rescued from one of my tech school instructors (he was going to throw it away because it didn’t work, but all it needed was a new lens and battery) for when I work on vehicles in my home garage.
Yeah that’s a fake story. You can give out spotlights.
I collect custom EDC flashlights. It's crazy how bright lights have gotten in the last ten years. I have a small EDC pocket light that's puts out roughly 500 lumens more light than the firesword.
I love seeing Adam excited about things
Fire sword - Best. Name. Ever!
The mining company I work for have been using NiteCore and other brands with 4000+ lumen output for a few years. Useful when doing inspections underground or as replacement for flashes in large stopes.
First comment from a coworker when seeing it: "It's a lightsaber".
Nice!! The one time I also wished there was an Amazon shop link in the description lol. Thanks for your story Adam, I like it!
Hi body, want to get an outdoor flashlight for free about $25 price?
I`m developing an outdoor flashlight, if you have some using experience about outdoor flashlight, come and participate in our Q&A activity, we will send you an outdoor flashlight for free!
feel free to contact me: twitter.com/gumingsnow
It would be great if you could test the lumens coming out of it to quantify the claim. Also, I'm a bit skeptical that considering it has 9 hours of battery life that it would have been used during an extended blackout to provide lighting for an intersection
Somebody send him an Emisar D4V2, pls.
I'm impressed at how many comments are saying Adam needs an Emisar light / Hanklight.
adam.. you know we need a night time preview of it now..
4:22 Then I hope the power outage was not longer than 9 minutes.😂
3000 lumens was impressive back then, but now you can get a 3000+ lumen light for well under $50
Somebody tell Adam about the Imalent MS18! 100,000 lumens, using 18 LEDs which are each brighter than the ones in the Google light.
from Adams story , his flashlight is at least 10 years old .. tech always advances
MS18 is killer but it seems this google light would be more special to him since it was a gift
@@LumenChaser It's definitely the better story! Just interesting to see how such a ridiculous light has been put to shame by new tech.
It would have been nice to see it being used in the dark here Adam.
Bloody amazing flashlight ... FireSword! THANKS for the show and tell!
I wonder what that might do to plant growing!
Oh so when you are a flashaholic its "wow nice flashlight" and "its so bright" but when im a flashaholic its "pull your pants up" and "there are children here"
I hope you would show this in a dark location or at night. To really show everyone it’s Power!
And I'm blind. Of envy! You get the most wonderful toys
ALWAYS THE BEST SHOWS !!!!
I didn’t know FLESHLIGHTS came with LEDs now!! Wow!!!
It looks like it belongs on a Dalek
Pro tip: NEVER give small children very powerful flashlights while camping to play with at night around the campfire!
Better pro tip: Don't take small children camping.
This, please, some kids almost killed me while I was biking because they decided blinding someone crossing a bridge with a 2 inch guardrail was a good idea, they were also shining them at cars
@@refraggedbean you have to deal with it, as it's a crime to spank children anymore. Sorry, pal.
I love how excited he is about his tools! It makes for great content! Keep up the great work Adam!
Lumen test? That thing is a monster
I'll stick with my olight
Adam was supposed to come to FanX in Salt Lake City this year. I am so sad because I am sure they will cancel it. He was the first guest I was excited enough to get a picture with...... I was actually going to finish my cosplay finally and tell him he gave me the courage to let go of my fear and wear cosplay in public! Someday.
The firesword is the perfect name for a flashlight this bright.
In reality, a 3 minute video.
Love Adam Savage👍😎
That was way more interesting than I thought it would be
I have that flashlight! From the same place. It's dangerously powerful.
Nice seing the good image quality again! 🤗
You have a skylight in that room?! I now need to view your surroundings from a whole different perspective!
Lol thats kinda creepy haha funny, but creepy!
I thought I wanted a skylight in my garage shop until I thought about what you were saying!
@@RandomStuffGarage619 Oh gosh I didn't mean that creepy. I meant I have to imagine or envision the room differently than I did before! :D
@@BlackMaze hahahaha all good lol thanks for the laugh!
Finally. One of Adam's favorite things that I own. :-)
I love the WUBEN L50 flashlight. It’s the best bang for the buck..
So cool. I’m a geek for flashlights (flashaholic), and that is a great story. That fire sword from Google is a unicorn!
I'm Blind Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks , Adam.
As a lifelong New Yorker I can say I never saw these things used as street/traffic lights during any blackouts and what would be the point? As you said they have nine minutes of battery life.
Cool cool stuff, ty Adam
wow! crazy flashlight
I bought a "Superbright" 16-LED from China off ebay. It's probably just as bright or brighter. It has 16,000mAH Li-on batteries and cost about $50 shipped. But, that flashlight is insane for a few years ago.
Was wondering if those are 18650. The switch reminds me of mechanical vape mods. Thanks for sharing!
