Shinedown is from Jacksonville FL. The same home town as Lynyrd Skynyrd. Jasin Todd, who was the original guitarist for Shinedow is married to Melody Van Zant. Ronnie Van Zant's daughter. Ronnie was the singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He died in the plane crash. The young girl is Jasin & Melody's daughter That's the picture of her grandfather (Ronnie) that she is holding. The woman in the mirror is Melody. Originally they played this in Judy Van Zant's club The Freebird Live. Judy is the widow of Ronnie The cowboy hat that is seen in the video belongs to Ronnie. He used to wear it on stage
Yes. Their parting was unfortunate but I think for the best for all. Aria WAS the once little girl in the video. I don’t know that it’s been played QUITE the same since Jasin played it but I DO LOVE Zach Meyers energy and creative ability he brings.
Thanks for sharing that connection to the song. God bless Ronnie and the music he shared. Such a special talent and the band deserves inclusion to the best American bands of all time. I'm a huge Allman Brothers fan but the sheer amount of quality songs Skynyrd produced in a short period is hard to beat.
I believe it is definitely top 3. I wouldn’t back down from it being the top cover until I heard Chris Stapleton’s cover. Which…. Is probably more close to the original and it made me “mad” because it’s up there now, too. But I love them all.
@@StormAF Yeah, I just heard Stapleton's cover...it is definitely fire. Still like Smith's version for 1, but Stapleton's is a very, very close 2nd. Dude can flat out sing too. 😲 His voice has that old-school...salt of the earth type of gravitas to it.
Love their cover of this song by Lynyrd Skynyrd. My son found this and played it for me years ago. It was my first time hearing it. The lyrics of this song are some of the best words I’ve ever heard.
Brent Smith is a beast. I've listened to Shinedown since the days of "Second Chance". That's a more commercial/radio track that you could listen to from their earlier days but would recommend others such as "45". Elizabeth Zharoff did a great interview with Brent a couple of years ago where he talked about his influences and Shinedown's music. Well worth watching.
I really love this band. Each album is pure gold. And they have a wide range of styles from ballads to heavy songs, from melancholic songs to songs that raise your power to the sky.
It's hard to know where to start with Shinedown since every song they have is great!! Shinedown is lead singer Brent Smith, guitarist/backing vocals Zach Myers, bassist/piano/backing vocals Eric Bass and drummer Barry Kerch. They are super nice. I've shot photos of their shows and meet &greet photos for a radio station.
You're right about his ability to fit in many different genres. Check out his side project with Shinedown's guitarist, Smith and Myers. They do mainly acoustic covers, but have some originals, too.
She did it when she heard Jonathon Davis do "that part" at the 12:20 mark in her react to Freak on A Leash. It was awesome. ruclips.net/video/Sz_uJiqQ1Dg/видео.html
Brent has such an AMAZING voice and extensive vocal range as well, and in the years I've listened to Shinedown he's grown and matured VOCALLY and musically. Every time I hear him sing this song I get goosebumps and get all teary eyed, and I'm a metalhead saying this. I can DEFINITELY appreciate talent no matter the genre, and this man here is ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH!!! Beth, please check out some more from Shinedown. A MUST is Second Chance. Just SPECTACULAR. Thanks for finally getting to this band, your reaction was spot on as always. This was truly a masterful cover of the original, and done acoustically, what a banger of a cover.❤❤❤❤❤
If you want to see all the other things he can do outside of rock. Check out Smith and Meyers, where he and the current guitar player do songs they want, covering Adele, Otis Redding and Phil Collin’s amongst many others
Hands down my favorite artist. Thanks for reviewing this for us and helping me identify the feelings I get that I wouldn’t be able to describe without your help. 😊
I love his acoustic version of "45" with Shinedown, check that one out. He's just such a good singer and to me he has a pretty unique and recognizable voice as well which is always a bonus. I love your breakdowns!
The power Brent Smith has in his vocals is amazing. I didn’t know Shinedown did a cover of Skynyrd’s Simple Man. This is an incredible version and Smith’s vocals give power and emotion to the story of the song. Brent Smith does a cover of Adele’s Someone Like You that is definitely worth watching.
Some people throw rocks at me for this opinion, but I think this is one of those rare occasions where the cover is better than the original. And the original is absolutely amazing.
This is a great Cover, I'd recommend giving it another listen but try their original version of this cover that was recorded live on air in the WAAF studio. He adds words and other sounds that were eliminated in this version that makes the WAAF version so much more natural and beautiful sounding.
45, Call Me, Second Chance, What a Shame, pretty much every Shinedown song from 2003-2008 albums you can react to. One of the best vocalist ion my opinion.
Brent is amazing and brings a whole other level of expression to this phenomenal song from Lynard Skynyrd--tears well up every time I hear it... Thank you!
Shinedown and Halestorm spent a lot of time together in the beginning of their careers. Both are with the same label and I believe Brent and Lzzy Hale have probably spent some vocal time together. I know they are very good friends. Brent Smith’s vocals never disappoint! They are always better LIVE!
Love Shinedown met them multiple times great guys. Brent was asked to sing with LS at the last show before Gary passed its was amazing. It is on RUclips. His voice transcends genres & can sing from hard rock close to metal to a song like Unchained Melody, which he coverd w Smith and Myers. He is the most versatile, powerful singer of our generation, & the sweetest guy. He can sing with no microphone & sound amazing.
Shinedown is one of my all-time favorite bands, Brent Smith is such a great singer, would be awesome to see you react to Symptom Of Being Human, Second Chance, 45, Lost In The Crowd, Monster, Shed Some Light just to name a few.
This was/is one of my favorite songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I most often dislike covers of others songs, but but Shinedown nailed it! I knew even before you listened to it, you would love it too, Bethany! So glad you found Shinedown, they have a great catalog of songs to review. 45, The sound of Madness, Save Me, Cut the Cord, just to name a few. I hope you will review more of Shinedown.
Love the reaction. Shinedown has been killing it for about 25 years now. They are great live, I'd recommend the live video of Call Me from Kansas City. They generally have very positive lyrics, as well; How Did You Love, The Sound of Madness, or Cut the Cord. Really too many great songs to list. LOL
I remember seeing them perform this live in VA. Brent Smith's vocals are just as crisp, and powerful, in person as they are in the studio recordings. There is also a video of him performing this song for a small group. The man can just flat out sing anything he wishes, and he can sing it very well. Suggestion: The band Three Days Grace. The band pretty much has two different personalities considering they've had two different leads in Adam Gontier and Matt Walst. Adam left the band due to creative differences/drug addiction issues, and Matt Walst stepped up to keep the band going. Obviously, they have two very distinct sounds due to having different vocalists. Adam has that trademark rasp/texture...and dare I say, soul to his vocals. He also has a lot of power and can belt out some serious screams. Matt's voice is less textured, is smoother, and has more upper range. He can also project power, but it's more...for lack of a better word, situational. Adam Gontier screams quite a bit. I'd really like to know what your expert ear can discern from these vocalists.
Brent Smith is absolutely unbelievable. I grew up listening to Shinedown, and its so hard to compare other bands to them just because of his raw talent and dynamic ability
Shinedown is a big favorite of mine. Easily my favorite band of the 2000’s. Check out Burning Bright, Call me, cut the chord, and Devil. That spans across 4 different albums. It’s just scratching the surface of what they have created.
Back in I think 2004, my band at the time opened up for Shinedown in Syracuse, NY. After we did our soundcheck, some of us were standing around talking, and this dude came up to us, obviously a little "altered" (lol), and said a few things we couldn't really understand, giggled, then walked off. Turned out it was Brent. We did our set, a band touring with them did theirs, then Shinedown took the stage. Probably one of the best live performances I've ever seen, Brent was on fire and tore the stage up. Absolutely spectacular.
Brent also has a side project with Zach Myers. They do a cover of "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Ottis Redding. They do an amazing job with it. They really capture the essence of the Blues in it.
Excellent song choice. His singing in this is just incredible, gives me goosebumps and makes me well up a bit here and there it so damn good! Beautiful song.
There's a ton of great music down the Shinedown "rabbit hole" and you will love each one. The official video for 45 is good and shows him still with the long hair. I do have one strong recommendation though, there are two songs that have videos with connected characters so you should do Get Up before Monsters to have context in the story of the videos. A live version of Cut the Cord you would probably appreciate although the official video is good too. Shinedown are well known for their live shows. Looking forward to sharing your journey of discovery.
AGREED! 100000% I protested this cover at first bc I mean… Skynyrd but now, Shinedown is my top 3 favorite bands. I’ve seen them almost 30 times and they NEVER EVER disappoint! They only get better and better.
Jacksonville Florida is home to 3 of my favorite bands -- Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shinedown, and .38 Special. Brent Smith is a great Vocalist. Check out the songs Second Chance, 45, and a song he sings on by apocolyptica. You will really get a idea of his potential.
The last time he sings simple man , there is a shot of Ronnie in his hat that flashes... so touching. Love Brent's voice!!! This rabbit hole goes deep! Enjoy!
If you want to hear power in a voice checkout”Heroes” by these guys. Thanks Bethany for all the great reaction videos. Omg there’s so much you need to hear and would love!🤟
Yeah, you heard the Lynard Skynard version. That's the original...which is amazing in itself. I dont usually like covers, but THIS ONE? They definitely did the original justice, to say the least. Shinedown is an incredible band and his voice is unmatched in my opinion. I'd recommend exploring more of their music.
One of the best covers - EVER. I love all his vocal choices. As a person who can't sing worth a poop I do a pretty decent job singing along to this ... go figure ... LOL
I can't find any other songs you've heard from shinedown, I can't wait to see what other songs you end up choosing!! I would love to hear your thoughts on heros or save me
There's a live performance of this from, i believe 2003 that i think you'd enjoy. I know its sketchy when people post random links so search youtube for, "Shinedown simple man live", and look for the video that was posted 15 years ago. it'll start off with Brent talking about Dimebag Darrel with the Simple Man riff being played in the background. Its a great performance and shows off how much control Brent has over his voice.
Seen them live in a small town in Arkansas at a old movie Theater when Shinedown was getting started I remember simple man was the last song of the set. It blew my mind Bren's vocal Range 🎙🎶🎵
I had never heard of him I really like his voice, I had not heard this song and now reading what you posted I'll go check out the original. You were as always, wonderful and so insightful.
HEY THERE. Greetings from INDIA ! So After Maybe close to 20 Years of knowing them, i still like his voice and still listen to a song or two when their new releases come out. There are some 7-8 songs or maybe 2 songs in every album of this now "very popular band", where the song as well as mainly his Voice is just excellent. No doubt on that at all. Although they have become more and more commercial/radio friendly and way less experimental than their first 2-3 albums, the band, if they want can pull their act together make a kick-ass and thoughtful Hard Rock record like "US AND THEM", but anyway they are slowly becoming like COLDPLAY after their first 3 albums. So Brent Smith, from truly gritty to guilty pleasure , his voice has always been the guiding force of SHINEDOWN. BUT BUT BUT, TRUTH BE TOLD, PARDON TO THE LOVERS HERE, and from my numerous observations of his singing, maybe except the Cover of U2 "One Love", Mr Smith is a NOT fantastic LIVE SINGER! YES ! I donno Why, but he is not being little laidback but something else. It Doesnt Hit you the same way as in the Records, its very good at Best, and kind of not great; Nothing like what he does over at the Studio. Weird! Really a Puzzle for me ! Check some of his Live Show Recordings and you will know. More than a Little Disappointing maybe, more with the band than him, hes is damn good but never experimented with his voice after few yrs, never tried new things to enhance his excellent Range and all. They got famous,, he got popular but maybe complacency or something like that. His voice has so much of potential and he has used maybe only 40-50% of it. Firstly, he has to tweak his singing accent a bit where he stretches the words a bit longer than required, always! He has a great baritone as well, but uses that part very sporadically. A Singer should show Variations and not always go for the mid to high notes in most songs. YOUR THOUGHTS - @TheVocalyst !
I really hope you review more of Shinedown's catalog. Brent Smith is probably one of my favorite male voices, and has such a crazy range, right up there with Chester Bennington (RIP). He puts so much passion into his music and when he sings, and by far my favorite band to see live. Highly recommend Monsters, 45, The Crow & the Butterfly, Call Me, A Symptom of Being Human, Daylight, Dead Don't Die... tbh, you can't go wrong.
Bethany, thanks for critiquing this song I was one of the people to request it. I was pretty sure that you would enjoy and appreciate the performance and techniques used, this is why I thought it would be fun to see your reaction as a professional vocal instructor. I always seem to learn about techniques and terminology when I watch your reviews. Thanks Again😎
I was lucky enough to see Shinedown at a small club because they were already on tour when they blew up. Last time they played clubs for a long time after that.
This is one of the times where I like the cover more than the original. There are songs where I live the original for one thing, and the cover for something else. Most of the time I like the original more. However here, I just always connected more with Shinedowns version.
Glad to see you enjoyed Brent Smith's singing and Shinedown! All of their music is incredible! May I recommend Symptom of Being Human? They are bid advocates of mental health. It's okay to be me and you!🥰
I always appreciate it when a good band covers a great song and has the good sense to keep the things that make the song great. I'll never understand why a band makes a great song unrecognizable in order to make it 'theirs.'
The young girl is Jasin & Melody's daughter

Originally they played this in Judy Van Zant's club The Freebird Live. Judy is the widow of Ronnie
The cowboy hat that is seen in the video belongs to Ronnie. He used to wear it on stage
So there is 'connective tissue' between the bands. Very interesting. 🤔
@@SolarWraith Oh yes

The Shinedown rabbit hole is a glorious adventure. Brent is an incredible vocalist.
No kidding, agreed. Don't know why people love to hate on them, they're a fantastic band!
His voice over the years has aged like great wine. He is one of the most overlooked vocalists in Rock I think. Not a bad album in their catalogue
This cover is pure platinum. Hands down the best cover of this song I've ever heard.
I believe it is definitely top 3. I wouldn’t back down from it being the top cover until I heard Chris Stapleton’s cover. Which…. Is probably more close to the original and it made me “mad” because it’s up there now, too. But I love them all.

When did he do it? I'm not fining it.
Deftones did a pretty good cover too
You can never go wrong with Shinedown or listening to Brent Smith's voice. One of my all time favorites!
"Second Chance". and "45". hopefully soon... Brent has such a distinctive voice that even in a cover you can tell it is him
Love their cover of this song by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
My son found this and played it for me years ago. It was my first time hearing it. The lyrics of this song are some of the best words I’ve ever heard.
Oh man. Brent Smith is on a level of his own. What a voice!
Lynryd Skynrd came out with this first. That's where you've heard this I'm sure

The Crow & the Butterfly is another amazing song by them.

Shinedown very underrated band and the Vocalyst is gorgeous
There is a great version of this song done at a house party type sitting I believe, watching the attendees amazed by his voice is something to see.
I love his acoustic version of "45" with Shinedown, check that one out. He's just such a good singer and to me he has a pretty unique and recognizable voice as well which is always a bonus. I love your breakdowns!

I listen to a lot of reactors and I really like how you use simple words for us normies who aren’t in vocal arts to understand
I love Lynrd Skynrd's original version. But Shinediwn nailed it! This is one of those songs that gives me tears and goosebumps.❤
Oh yes, Shinedown is awesome. There are many great songs for you to analyze.

Brent is one of my favorite singers ever
Bethany, thanks for critiquing this song I was one of the people to request it. I was pretty sure that you would enjoy and appreciate the performance and techniques used, this is why I thought it would be fun to see your reaction as a professional vocal instructor. I always seem to learn about techniques and terminology when I watch your reviews.
Thanks Again😎
great song...great reaction.....congrats for 400k
You’ve probably heard Lynyrd Skynyrd sing this, as it is their original! I love both artists take on it!
Your passion for vocals is amazing!!
Second Chance by SHINEDOWN
One of my many favorite songs of all time. The original video is a awesome story also.❤❤❤
acoustic version of "45" by shinedown is an absolute must. please react to that i would love to see your reaction to it!
Seen Shinedown live a few times and, as great as they are in a studio, they are much better listened to live! Pure talent.
I was lucky enough to see Shinedown at a small club because they were already on tour when they blew up. Last time they played clubs for a long time after that.
My first album, 2005 Us and Them, had me hooked
This is one of the times where I like the cover more than the original.
There are songs where I live the original for one thing, and the cover for something else.
Most of the time I like the original more.
However here, I just always connected more with Shinedowns version.
If you want a really fun shinedown cover, their version of "I Feel the Earth Move" is phenomenal and a live recording
Glad to see you enjoyed Brent Smith's singing and Shinedown! All of their music is incredible! May I recommend Symptom of Being Human? They are bid advocates of mental health. It's okay to be me and you!🥰
Great reaction! Definitely go down the Shinedown Rabbit Hole!!!!
I always appreciate it when a good band covers a great song and has the good sense to keep the things that make the song great. I'll never understand why a band makes a great song unrecognizable in order to make it 'theirs.'
Crow and the butterfly is such a powerful song
C'mon Gal , you know this is a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover. Love your reactions. Always.
