Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2, has long been a favourite on recital programs. Dubbed the 'Moonlight' after Beethoven's death by the poet Ludwig Rellstab, whose verses ware set by Schubert, this evocative name has stuck. The tranquil opening movement contrasts with the boisterous finale.
The Grammy award-winning pianist Daniel Barenboim has been active on the concert stage since the age of seven when he made his stage debut in his hometown of Buenos Aires. Well known for his work with the East-Western Divan Orchestra, a group of young Arab and Israeli musicians, he is currently the director of the Berlin State Opera, La Scala (Milan) and the Staatskapelle Berlin. Barenboim is described as "one of the few musicians in the world today who could accurately be describe as legendary".

Lots of people say the third movement is easy because “the beginning is just broken chords.” But that’s only the beginning what about the rest of the movement? And even the beginning is hard. And who else can play this master than Daniel Barenboim, he’s a master in Beethoven.

I heard 100s, and never heard anyone play Op. 27. No 2. Sonata like Barenboim! A genuine recognition of the poetic despair and darkness bearing this composition into the world!

Man.. I've been looking for this music piece for years !!
There was a comment on Facebook about a boy that played this exact piece
and someone mentioned it was Beethoven piano sonata 14.
FINALLY I FOUND IT !!!! This is the music used in the old Smurfs episode whenever
there was a tragedy happening like when the dam was destroyed and the small village gets flooded.
I sincerely been looking for it for more than 20 years..
    *I FEEL COMPLETE* !

@@yoshimitsu8922 Every performance is different, and depends on the listener. I always thought that the young Barenboim in the 1960s made the 3rd Movement his specialty.

Truly one of the best classical pieces ever! So sad, deep and meaningful. Here there's almost all of the mankind power to create something that represents the human race feelings. Very few likes and views. Ridiculus! This reflects the degrading condition of the humanity in the modernity.

Hello, I mean no offense to you in saying this, but i think it is just this particular video with low views and likes. There are many many many other videos of this song here on youtube with even millions of views and hundreds of thousands of comments. Humanity still enjoys this song :)) Have a great day.

Valentina Lisitsa plays it more emotionally and faster. This on has also perfect sound, but this was stricter as a result maybe closer to Beethovens play. Thats what I felt listening to them. Same sonata, different play.

Yes, both excellent pianists. I also hear them one after the other and have the impression that Barenboim has the better sense of tempo. That suits the sonatas very well.

Sorry, but this sonata is not dedicated to Haydn, no.
Dedicated "Alla Damigella Contessa Giulietta Guicciardi".
What edition did he use? Because in bar 134 of the third movement, in the recap ... The legendary Barenboim was not Urtex ... ahahah ... ahahah

If you ignore the distorted sound, I think the first movement sounds much nicer if you play at 2x speed. You get melodies that are much less clear at normal speed. But not what Barenboim wanted, and probably not what Beethoven wanted either. Oh well :(

Beethoven's contemporaries said it should be played faster: 54-60 bpm for 1/4 notes. When recording began in the 1930s it was played fast.
