- I have managed to track down this track from a 1967 album 'Anne Rogers & Patricia Routledge - The Sound Of Music' of the wonderful Patricia Routledge (known around the world as "Mrs. Bucket") singing Climb Ev'ry Mountain, and it is, quite simply the most glorious version I have ever heard.

Nobody can surpass her diction , you can understand her every world perfectly.
My husband & I are in the US & have been watching “Keeping up Appearances” for years. We watch it over & over and laugh every time. We did not, however, know the true extent of her remarkable talent until I watched her sing “Climb Every Mountain”. I’m truly at a loss for words. What an extraordinary woman.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,,,
She sang in a lot of musicals earlier in her career. He debut on Broadway was in 1966 (at the age of 37). Such talent in 'Keeping up appearances' to pretend to sing badly.
That was the joke! That, in reality, she had a sensational voice! What an amazing woman. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The LADY has a BUCKET load of talent!!!!. Rog
@@nevillemason6791 when you hear an actor sing poorly, it usually means they are actually a very good singer.
Stunningly beautiful voice.
lockness on your photo, As a little girl and to date i will always believe.
I have heard Dame Patricia sing several times, but this stunned me. It is one of, if not the best renditions of this song that I've ever heard.
🎤 first time I heard her sing have a great voice
So beautifully sung and a great lady
She is a surprisingly fine singer!
Absolutely stunning
I couldn't agree more, The Frumious Bande.... I thought the dubbed voice in the film was too young-sounding and light for the lyrics. Personally I feel it needs someone who sounds older with more life experience and having a more substantial voice. This is what Patricia Routledge gives us here. Just perfect! Thank you, Miss Routledge!
I hope the UK understands just what kind of a national treasure they have in Dame Patricia.
💓 THE Best OF Britain 👏💯..bravo DAME Patricia routledge... xxxxxxxx
We do, or at least I do!
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,,,
Dame Patricia Routledge said only a truly good singer can mimic a bad singer well. That is why she had so many fooled as Hyacinth Bucket.
Would you believe this is Hyacinth Bucket. This rendition brings chills
That's Bookay dear. 😉 😆
Emmet wouldn't have run away from her if he heard her sing like this
I low-key loved Rose 😅 the town bikeeee! Wish we saw more of her tbh! She was always a sad case with all her breakups :( ❤️❤️
@@lauraryan8921 no, no, no!! It’s much posher than that! It’s Bouquet! 😂😂😂 sorry, couldn’t resist!

She was a classically trained mezzo soprano. Evident here. She could do so much. Such wide ranging talent.
She's a soprano, not mezzo and Gilbert & Sullivan wrote a musical with her in mind for it.
@@lirmediatv753 With respect she is not a soprano. Both the range of her voice and its color prove that she has the range of a Mezzo-soprano. Gilbert & Sullivan did not write musicals but comic operas. I'm curious to know how Gilbert & Sullivan "wrote a musical with her in mind for it." Gilbert died in 1911 and Sullivan in 1900. Patricia Routledge was born in 1929. In Ruddigore the characters in the family portraits come to life; are Gilbert & Sullivan of their number? Did they collaborate after their respective deaths?!!
@@judynesher5898 The timbre itself isn’t particularly mezzo-ish, but the tessitura itself is very indicative of a mezzo.
Ok I'll weigh in. You're both wrong. Just because her voice has some added color and warmth in the mid-range does not a mezzo make. Plus, this is a soprano song. How do we know? If you studied the other songs Mother Abbess must sing, there are splits where she is assigned the highest womens' part. With repeated high As and B-flats, it's a devilish part to sing, pun intended.
@jonathangoodman2636
You are wrong. Routledge herself has said she is a mezzo and was trained as such.
The fact that she goes down to the tonic and not up to the dominant fifth (as MacKay did in the film version) is also indicative though of course she may have been just following the original score.
Pity she never sang this at one of her candlelight dinner parties - I am sure even the vicar would have succumbed to her after this!
our Rose would love that
She´ll sing at me, I know she´ll sing at me.
I need to get my box set out. Such fabulous comedy.
🤣
With that voice she can sing at me whenever she likes
Good one! :-)
We can only hope Emmet, we can only hope!
Dame Patricia is 90 today - Feb. 17, 2019. God bless her.
My niece's birthday!
As a faithful watcher of Keeping up Appearances I am in utter shock hearing this. I seldom like remakes, but this is better than the original version. Amazing
Dame Patricia is a national treasure.
Amazing but ending is weaker
She sings a solo of The Old Wooden Cross in one of the Hetty Wainthropp mysteries. I always suspected she had this in her. She’s a comic on Keeping Up Appearances, but her voice is still there.
Agreed!
patricia routledge has had a long and distinguished career in musical theater, including such highlights as: starring in the original broadway production of the leonard bernstein-alan jay lerner collaboration "1600 pennsylvania ave" ((1976); appearances as ruth in the joseph papp delacorte theater (central park, nyc) production of "the pirates of penzance" (1980); and the role of nettie fowler in the nicholas hytner production of "carousel" (royal national theatre, 1992).
Sheridan must be so proud. Lovely
I always knew she was a classically traied singer but this is truly stupendous. Only a brilliant singer can purposefully sing badly. Its very difficult. Her career encompassed musicals as well as comedy and we were very blessed to have seen her perform. Brava indeed!!❤💯💥🎉
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Oh that was so nice. Powerful but not overbearing. Smooth as honey. Convincing as Mother Superior. And she was able to hold that last so long I could have gone to the store and back. Amazing.

She is a special and valuable jewel in the Brtish Empire.
And in the hearts of Americans with good taste!

Absolutely fabulous! She was blessed with a myriad of talents and this sublime singing voice was only one of them; what a woman!
From America. I have absolutely fallen in love with this woman. Her talents are beyond description. From "Mrs. Bucket" -- sorry, "BOU-queeeeeee" to her voice to her dramatic roles, superb in every aspect.

You can find other songs by her on RUclips they’re all beautiful, my favourite is this - ruclips.net/video/MQPv-yzvR1U/видео.html
She has an album Presenting Patricia Routledge.
Courtney Wofford You almost have to be able to sing very well, in order to create a character who sings so badly.
No kidding Emmet would have been lucky to have her sing in his productions
My first job in the theatre was as an ASM at Guildford Repertory , for the 1959 Pantomime Cinderella in which Patricia Routledge was Prince Charming . I noted then what a beautiful singing voice she had . I had a very small part to play . Pat as we called her was such a beautiful young woman , with a beautiful figure , sometimes we were in the wings together waiting to go on , she would have us in stitches of laughter . Patricia Routledge took the lead in our next play , in which I also had a small part ; there was no doubt then that she was destined to be a great actress .
#David you are very fortunate to have had such a wonderful experience,
David Barneby m9
I was a junior member at Guildford Rep and remember going to the theater every Saturday matinee for 1/6d (one and sixpence). In the early 1960s. I remember seeing Patricia Routledge then many times and loved her then. She was so funny and talented. She made a great impression. Fast forward to more recent years. I now live in US and turned on TV to see Keeping Up Appearances. I recognised her instantly. I love her in Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads.
@@janetsteinberg6834 Hello Janet , Thinking back to those early days " Happy Days Are Here Again " !!! During rehearsals for the pantomime Cinderella I had to help the scenic artist sizing the flats . The scenic artist was Bagnal Harris quite famous from the Old Vic , At that time I had never heard of him , but he painted the prettiest of sets with lots of sparkle . Patricia Routledge was so charming , unassuming and encouraging to us youngsters , we loved her .
Lovely memory.
i cannot describe what joy this woman and all she is, has brought to my life here in Canada. Thank you for countless hours of laughter and much joy in listening to you sing, recite Scripture and make many many other people around the world laugh. Thank you, dear Patricia! You are a precious human being.
This beautiful song is beautifully song by the very talented actress, singer, comedian, and entertainer, Patricia Routledge who portrayed Hyacinth Bucket pronounced Bouquet in the classic television sitcom Keeping Up Appearances! Patricia Routledge was also in the 1967 movie To Sir, With Love. This is the best version of this song ever! I love the classic television show Keeping Up Appearances! Patricia Routledge also portrayed Heddie Winthrop, an amateur detective following the final and fifth season of Keeping Up Appearances! I wish Keeping Up Appearances had had at least two more seasons so we could have met Richard Bucket's relatives. I watch reruns of Keeping Up Appearances on PBS here in the United States. I also own every single episode of Keeping Up Appearances on Video tape and DVD! It is Dame Patricia Routledge. Heddie Wynthrop was a very good show! It only lasted two seasons Patricia Routledge also won the Tony Award for her performance in a Broadway musical! I love Patricia Routledge and the entire cast of Keeping Up Appearances! They are all superb! Thank you for posting and sharing this beautiful and classic recording!
What a powerful voice.
Sensational !!!!!
Got goosebumps from the very beginning. Brava, listening with tears in my eyes. Wishing I could give a glorious bouquet to Hyacinth Bucket 👏🏻💐🌹❤
Absolutely breathtaking . What a truly magnificent version of this song . My goodness , what a fantastic voice !!
Patricia Routledge is such a treasure what a talented lady God bless you
Even in keeping up appearances you can clearly sense she could sing well and hit the high notes........Incredible Lady! AAww strucK!!
This is probably the best rendition of this wonderful song. The power of Dame Patricia's voice is perfect for expressing the hope, the majesty and the uplifting spirit behind the lyrics. Truly amazing.
Wow...
Tingles...
Enthralling...
Bless this wondrous lady...
One of the great songs ever. She sings it to perfection. Simply divine
A lovely voice with such clear diction
I love Patricia Routledge.
She also could have had a career in opera if she wanted. She had all the prerequisites. Thanks for posting this!
It’s absolutely the finest recording I’ve ever heard. Her voice is so rich and powerful. It’s a consolation to know many thousands were able to hear her live on stage for many years, just because there are few recordings of her serious singing doesn’t mean she didn’t have a fine career with it. And who can really compare this with Hyacinth Bucket anyway? They are both equally skilled works of genius.
This beautiful song has brought me to tears! Magnificent rendition! Who knew?
Now that's a voice!
Thank you for uploading this. My mother and I used to watch Hyacinth together, we love that show. Sometimes I would call my mom "Hyacinth" because she resembled her enough to be her sister. My mom never heard Miss Routledge sing, well... sing so beautifully and professionally, but from the hilarious "bad singing" she performed in the show, my mom always said, "I bet she really can sing wonderfully when she's not playing Hyacinth." My mom unexpectedly passed away almost a year ago on Christmas Day. I wish so much that I could send this to her, she would love it.
Your post brought tears to my eyes. My mom and I also watched Keeping Up Appearances together. My brother bought her the boxed set of all seasons. I thought the same thing when I heard this because we did not know that Dame Patricia could sing so beautifully. Where ever our mom's are let's hope they are listening to this treasure.
Same with my mum too. She also had the full box set and in some ways, mum was a Hyacynth too, except that she was the real deal, a true socialite and an utter snob! Still, she had pizazz and was a very grand and elegant lady. Mum told me years ago that Dame Patricia was a wonderful singer and stage actress, which I didn't know beforehand. I cared for mum in her final years and we watched the show over and over!
My blessings to you and our mum's are watching over us still.
Good Grief !!! This is utterly AMAZING !!! We had all realised during her Mrs Bucket days that she could muck up a song (obviously on purpose), and that only a real singer could do that, but I am just overwhelmed listening to this wonderful lady sing properly.....thanks so much for sharing.
Patricia Routledge said that singing flat and off key in her television series, was the most difficult thing to do, she being a classically trained voice.
@@MrSwifts31 As a classically trained singer, I can confirm she's correct. It's very difficult to pull off because your every instinct and muscle memory are fighting you.
I had no idea ,Dame Patricia had such an operatic voice. How Lovely. I love this song anyway. It was my high school Graduation song. I have no idea how many fellow Graduates " followed " their Dreams. I know 2 were killed in Vietnam. And at our 10 year reunion, we were all very sad at a memorial given them.
Thank you for sharing this with those of us in America who only knows Dame Patricia on " Keeping Up Appearances"! She didn't sing at all on that show I don't believe. ✌️🇺🇲‼️🤗♥️
She always sang to Emmett but he ran away!
Dame patricia routledge would have been 38 years young in 1967 when she recorded this beautiful song ! Good Health and many happy years to her 💯👑❤
An enormous talent. She started her career doing Broadway musicals in the sixties. I adore her. The performers they call 'artists' today aren't
fit to mow her grass!
One truly multitalented lady. 💝
I am also a huge fan of Dame Patricia Routledge. She delights in "Keeping Up Appearances" and in "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates", playing two very different characters with equal charm and humanity. She won two Tony Awards, a Bafta, and an Olivier Award. Now this! Her voice and her presence are sheer perfection; this song could have been written for her. She moved me to tears. Thank you, Dame Patricia, for all the laughs and all the tears, throughout the years. You have been a gift to the world.

THAT IS ONE IMPRESSIVE VOICE ! By an equally impressive actress. Breathtaking, there's no other word for it.
She really is wonderful, actress, singer , comedian. Fab, fab, fabulous.
I have always admired Patricia Routledge for her comedy and acting abilities but I have never heard such a beautiful voice such as hers. This performance is absolutely beautiful, very powerful and perfectly on pitch. She's a wonderful and very gifted mutli-talented woman.
What a wonderful singer Patricia Routledge is.... Even as 'Hyacinth Bucket' in the "Keeping up appearances" series, when she sang, you could tell she was an accomplished singer.

Just sublime. She is truly a 'national treasure'. From her Alan Bennett monologues to Mr.s Bookay, lady of the house speaking, she just embraces everything she takes on.

👍 good evening in the movie who sung it been so long since I watch T S of M
The original Mother Superior was Patricia Neway on Broadway. I saw her in the 50s and thought she was fabulous. I can't tell you how many times I listened to the cast album over the years, until I replaced it with the original Broadway cast CD. Dame Pat is a close second. Sorry, Audra, you lose. Peggy Wood played the movie Mother Superior, but her vocals were dubbed. It's been a long time since I watched the movie, but I don't remember hating it. I was stunned to hear such a glorious rendition coming from Hyacinth Bucket. I had no idea she could sing.

Wish my local PBS station would bring back her wonderful comedy. This was a treat.
Wow! So she really was “keeping up appearances “ 😂💕. Beautifully done Patricia and thank you!🤗
Wow! I heard the original Patricia Neway version on Broadway and this is certainly equal, if not better. I knew she had to have a voice (because it actually takes one to sing as badly as she did as Hyacinth). What a talent this woman is! Her Hyacinth Bucket is surely one of the greatest performances/characterizations in television history. "Keeping Up Appearances" is also one of the GREAT sitcoms -- everyone on it was wonderful, but none of it would've worked without a spot on Hyacinth, and Patricia Routledge gave them all they could have hoped for and more. To have a show (and an actress) make you laugh out loud during EVERY show is remarkable -- and all with no explicit sex, no raunchy dialogue and situations, no nothing but FUNNY -- just what comedy ought to be but hardly ever is anymore. Wisecracks and sex -- today, that's about it. Again, WOW!
She sings beautifully too in one of the last episodes of Hetty Wainthropp.
She is the most talented and most remarkable artist ever to come out of the UK
@@donedwards1945 Well, she is remarkably talented, but I wouldn't go that far. 😁

We had the UK cast recording of The Sound of Music on LP when I was little, and Mum was so proud of having been at the same school in Birkenhead. Throughout her TV career, to me she has always been first and foremost the lady who sang Climb Every Mountain.

I am awestruck. I saw her singing in "Hettie Wainthrop" the other night but I had no idea that she had so vast a range. Whoever voted this down is only showing how uneducated they are when it come to music and what the human voice is capable of in terms of singing and entertaining their fellow human beings. Only someone who is still at the bottom of the tree of life could fail to appreciate the talent that lies here.
