I finally get it now! You explained it better than the 191-page book I just read on how to swap an LS. This old gearhead is ready to come to the 21st century.
I started my engine yesterday thanks to this video. It's sitting on a small lawn mower trailer. I even sent my computer to your guy for my VATS delete. Worked like a charm. Thank you once again bro.
I walked into my buddy's shop while he was on the phone trying to explain to a customer how difficult this conversion is gonna be, when I showed him your vid, he was completely blown away! Needless to say all of us (his customers) are now on the hunt for LS's!!
couldn't get mine started with 3 wire harness from Craigslist. put the old harness back on followed this video and she started right up! Thank you sir you are a life saver.
I used a $25 stand and mounted with Dingo mounts. I had to flip them so it would bolt up. I also made a "fuel pump" using and small tank with barb fitting out of the bottom, air compressor in at the top. It fired right up. You shoulda heard my wife after I started it with no exhaust in the garage lol. Thx for your vid's and info dude.
Got any tips? Im gonna try putting a 5.3 in a 99 mustang that was originally a v6. I know itll all fit. Only thing I worry about is all the wiring and where to put stuff really. (First big project)

Riley Marsh Thank you Riley! I really appreciate your feedback. That video is on my to-do list. I hope to get to it one day. Right now, I’m still in the process of move though.
Thanks for the post bro. I was able to start my junk yard 5.3 tonight on the stand to verify that it runs. This method Worked like a champ. Thanks again!
So can u drive it like that too I’m doing a ls swap in my 88 Chevy s10 I’m take motor and trans and other stuff I need out of my 2001 Chevy 1500 so what do u thinks first ls swap
So I commented a few months ago asking questions about a 5.3 complete with wiring harness and I planned on swapping it into my c10. I saw the video and got bored, so brought the engine to my apartment house at school. Started it in my driveway after a buddy with HP tuners pulled out the VATS for me. Had a spare walbro hanging around and it did the trick. Just need to find a trans that will work and the swap will start!
It's 4 wires on the obdll port pin2,4,5,16 2 is cereal information, four and five are grounds, and 16 is power. And the serial information on your PCM is pin 58 on the blue connector
thanks. I did know about the brake pedal for the converter release. I found the fuel pump relay wire and managed to wire all that today. I had the 52 Chevy running today for 20 minutes. Tomorrow will move to the Plymouth coupe...again thanks
BEST ENGINE KNOWN TO MAN. I like your style gear head.. The video should be called how to test fire 99-01 ls engine using unlocked pcm and stock fuse box with little effort.
Put a shut off valve right where the air goes in on that canister, it'll run quite a while on it. I've done that to move cars around that have dead fuel pumps. I usually set the pressure a little low so the regulator doesn't open.
I watched this vidgeo years ago and thought it was good and helpful. I’m now, considering doing a ls2 swap and t56 in my 2007 Mercedes c230. So this was nice to see again. Very informative
Hey bro! This video helped me so much for my 5.3 for my stand, is there any way you can explain how to set up a DBW 5.3? I picked up my L59 from s 2006 Tahoe. I got it to idle on the stand. I picked up a DBW gas pedal from the yard today but don’t know how to connect it to the harness/fuse block. Can you show us how to set up a DBW set up? Keep on rockin on! 🤘
Wow that's awesome! I have been thinking of getting this 5.3 to put in a 31 Ford rat rod but didn't want to spend the money on a stand alone and don't have the time to mess with all that spaghetti. This is super simple!
This is exactly what I needed, thank you! Now I'm worried I didn't pull enough of the harness out of the donor truck I junked to get the OBDII port and all that jazz. New subscriber, doing a great service to us learning this from scratch. Keep it up!
+Christopher Ryan Thanks Chris! If you unscrewed the engine harness from the fuse block, you got enough. You may want the fuse block too, to make it run like i did in this video, but you can always find that in a junk yard. OBDII ports can be found in any vehicle after 1996. So just cut one out. They're easy to wire in, just need one signal wire, one power and one ground going to it.
+AGearhead4Life Hi Mark, I was going to try to fire mine up today and I'm curious if I should take the water pump off to fire it on the engine stand. I have the accessory belt off and the power steering pump/alternator bracket is off as well as I have it on the stand. I don't want to burn up the pump if its going to be an issue and noticed it wasn't installed in your video. Thanks so much!
I'm stuck everything is ready but fuel. I bought the same injector cleaner but can't find a fitting to tie into the Schroeder valve on the rail. Do you remember where and what you bought to connect it?
+Christopher Ryan That is a great tool and works good at actually cleaning the injectors too. Yea, I used the hose off of my fuel pressure tester to connect the two.
Thanks for this video! I'm swapping a 6.0L into my 68 camaro and the harness is a total mystery to me. This video really simplified the what is needed to get the engine to turn over. THANKS!
+dawan antonio No problem! Those custom harness will look a lot better though. If you decide get get one that's cleaned up, I know a guy that is much cheaper than $750. I believe he'll redo an old one for closer to $300. Check out "LS Wiring Harness Conversions" on facebook. Good guy.
Thank you for the information cause my lil brother is wanting to do an LS swap in our uncle noels 75 square body he just brought since he passed last year an next month will mark 1year he been gone so he's building the truck as a memory to him
jojow241 NP man! Most make it sound more difficult because they believe that you have to strip it all the way down to individual wires. You only have to do that if you want to complete customize your harness. I usually don't have much time, but want it to look a little better than it does with this bulky fuse block. So I take it one step further than in this video. I cut the plug off that goes into the fuse block from the harness and use a smaller universal fuse block to give power to the same wires that had power from the fuse block. It's basically just all the pink wires.

That's a good question that I'm sure he'd be able to answer. Shoot him a message and see what he says. IT's be a couple years now since he's sent me a PCM and I was living in AL at the time. I'm an on-line shopper though, so i've gotten use to waiting a week for an item to come in the mail. It doesnt bother me at all.
Hey Steven. I'd need a more specific question to help you out, because you wouldn't necessarily have to build it at all. just drop it in stock and it'll still be great.
All this info helped me a lot with my LS swap. Running the factory fuse box. Pretty much the fuel pump wire and the ignition wire..going into my 86 k20 followed by MrWhitels1
I'm getting ready to put a 5.3 into a 75 Vega , the engine is from an 09 Tahoe and I'm pretty sure it'll get a 4L 60 trans. Any and all advice is most welcome. Great video and God bless.
Lol this is awesome. Some people make it so complicated. You could legitimately put it in a car and run it just like that. You would just need to figure out gauges
Maybe I can't wrench anymore but I still have fun watching. Double D put a LS in a fifty seven more door n then converted it to a tudor. He made that part easy cause he did one and learned and I ask myself why we didn't do that when kids as two anything was high an more doors were tow aways. Even better, he used pontiac doors on a chevy with no grief. It was his first LS swap and nervous as a long tailed cat in a living room full of rocking chairs. He couldn't of googled it as he bought wiring looms and had a mess going and also wiring is not his strong suit. Now no problem, grab and throw it in. I watch another channel cause he builds rat rods as they have probably had the longest run of project cars. I think the next thing is building subframes that let you do a direct bolt in and power steering is right there. Long and short, his buddy grabbed the mess and tied it together like you and then the magic of touch the jumper in this app, and it fired right up in front of him. The look of shock took facial to the dumb bear look/LOL. I never had all this fun but fixed a few cars for my own use... I wrenched on heavy equipment and made good money cause for me that was it. No computers, or facebook or google, it was the fifties and even the "cell phone" had a cord on it for ship to shore at three or more a minute.Don't get me wrong, I loved the fifties and on up to early eighties still not much in way of a computer.. some small attempts but nothing a bone head like me to worry about as the ground outs or open circuits were easy. Guy I worked for got a new drill rig and took the keys out making it hard for me to service so I hot wired it then after making sure everything was coatsure went and hid it behind some other stuff. You could hear him blowing and I asked him what was the problem an he told me that someone had stole his hundred tho drill rig so I kinda wound him more said ya I seen it moving and thought you came back.. Finally couldn't take it anymore as the guys heartsick told him where it was parked and he tells me not to tease him right now so quick hot wire and drive it back out in sight. See, I am a mechanic an he is just making it hard on me... he got over it slowly and came around
awesome video man.....you're very smart and a good mechanic.....I think most ppl are scared of the ls swaps cause of the wiring harness and such......videos like this prove that it isn't rocket science or trying to split atoms, lol, I like the 3rd Gen too man.....I have an 83 w/a traditional sbc, runs very good but here in the future I want LS power......keep doing what you do bro, I watch all ur vids.....good luck to ya!
+Aaron McDonald Thank you very much for your support Aaron! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the show man. I noticed most people were concerned about the harness also, since I received a lot of questions and comments about it. That is why I made this video. I was hoping to simplify it for everyone. It can get more difficult than this depending on what options they want to use, but this is the most simply way to make it work and anyone can do it.
gearhead..you answered my questions again thanks that's what I got that came with the pump.thanks again...so it's fuel tank to regulator to pump to rail...then from regulator return back to tank...
No. The pump makes the pressure. So it has to go before the regulator. Regulator regulates the pressure and returns the rest to the tank. It's tank, pump, regulator and then to the rail.
Going to give this a try on a gen 4 junkyard 5.3 tomorrow, it has two ignition wires for e67 ecm but same principal.I am also using a stock harness.Already flashed out vats+starter check.
Awesome video man .. cant believe I'm just seeing this now ... helps out big time ... just a quick question ... you say it doesn't need the MAF or O2 sensors to run it on the stand ... do you know why that is? Doesn't the ECM need those readings to operate properly?... that's all I'm curious about .. thanks alot tho for posting this
Nate BB Awesome. Glad that I could help. Yes, because without input from those sensors, the PCM will just use default data to do its job. Actually, that’s mostly true for the O2s. For the MAF missing, it’ll use the data from the MAP to do what it needs. These PCMs can even be programmed to not depend on a MAF at all. It’s called a “Speed Density” tune. Commonly done in turbo builds.
hayts just saw ur vid over at nicks been shopping thier for year good people im in sa to raised on south side like ur little blue truck to o and thanks for ur service
Great video! I'm planning on a LQ9 from an Escalade swap into my 1970 Chevelle and would prefer to use the factory harness. This is the first set of instructions that made sense. Thanks a ton!
Awesome job my friend, and it will clean up nicely once you peal all the wires away, because there is, like you said only two real wires to power it, and the rest are O2, map, tps, sensors and so on, and so on. Anyway thanks for sharing, and keep up the awesome work.
If that’s not true then why do you have the best tutorial on RUclips LS God
thanx to zane for safety awareness n best laugh i've had in awhile , glad to know no toes were harmed in making his video

this is fucking awesome, but how do you erase the security system on the ecu?
You have to take it to a tuning shop and have them take it off, via hp tuners or something like that.
There's a couple ways to do it, one involves swapping it into a silverado and doing a reset process and the other is a camaro i think.

That's a good question that I'm sure he'd be able to answer. Shoot him a message and see what he says. IT's be a couple years now since he's sent me a PCM and I was living in AL at the time. I'm an on-line shopper though, so i've gotten use to waiting a week for an item to come in the mail. It doesnt bother me at all.
hi my name is steve im trying to build a ls to put in my Oldsmobile cutlass whats the best way to go ??
Hey Steven. I'd need a more specific question to help you out, because you wouldn't necessarily have to build it at all. just drop it in stock and it'll still be great.
AGearHead4Life where are you from man would love some hands on
mattsworld17 I'm now living back home near San Antonio, TX.
man you my hero workin on my swap now just started I'll be back
All this info helped me a lot with my LS swap. Running the factory fuse box. Pretty much the fuel pump wire and the ignition wire..going into my 86 k20 followed by MrWhitels1
Awesome Fan! Glad to hear it. Thank you for sharing your feedback.
I'm getting ready to put a 5.3 into a 75 Vega , the engine is from an 09 Tahoe and I'm pretty sure it'll get a 4L 60 trans. Any and all advice is most welcome. Great video and God bless.
I am currently ls swapping my truck this helped me out a lot thank you and you just earned a like and a new subscriber
Lol this is awesome. Some people make it so complicated. You could legitimately put it in a car and run it just like that. You would just need to figure out gauges
And I’ve got a quick fix for gauges too.
Here’s the video link.

I found this helpful.. I'm currently in the process of picking up an LS from a junk yard and the included wiring harness, thanks for the heads up!
Awesome! Glad to hear it Gerry! Good luck!
awesome video man.....you're very smart and a good mechanic.....I think most ppl are scared of the ls swaps cause of the wiring harness and such......videos like this prove that it isn't rocket science or trying to split atoms, lol, I like the 3rd Gen too man.....I have an 83 w/a traditional sbc, runs very good but here in the future I want LS power......keep doing what you do bro, I watch all ur vids.....good luck to ya!
Straight to the point more action and less talking very well explained u deserve around of beers thanks!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
gearhead..you answered my questions again thanks that's what I got that came with the pump.thanks again...so it's fuel tank to regulator to pump to rail...then from regulator return back to tank...
No. The pump makes the pressure. So it has to go before the regulator. Regulator regulates the pressure and returns the rest to the tank. It's tank, pump, regulator and then to the rail.
Thanks so much for this video. It helped me make my mind up I’m going to ls swap my 1985 Trans am
I'm just starting a jag XJS 5.3 turbo swap for my dad it's on his bucket list thanks for the videos
Awesome BigWilly! Good luck!
And you got the video done before all that rain came in to haha good job on explaining all this!!!
MrMSA90 haha Thanks man! and you're right. I finished shooting right before it rained. It was sprinkling as I moved the engine back into the garage.
Finally a video with full details!! I got a 86 swb c10 im really wanting to do this and use my 700r4. i hope this doesnt cost a fortune..
I like this guy he makes it simple not complicated 👍
Thank you Mike!
I know this a old video but thanks for making it ! I got plans to do a swap on a 78 ford 2wd pickup I got.
Whoo Buddy!!! That was somtin' different! LOL happy he didn't get hurt --
Going to give this a try on a gen 4 junkyard 5.3 tomorrow, it has two ignition wires for e67 ecm but same principal.I am also using a stock harness.Already flashed out vats+starter check.
Fuel injector cleaner as a fuel pump is a bad ass idea!!
Thanks! It’s been working well too!
hayts just saw ur vid over at nicks been shopping thier for year good people im in sa to raised on south side like ur little blue truck to o and thanks for ur service
By far the best engine stand test video! Thanks bro. You're a genius
This is why we love the ls engine
Great video! I'm planning on a LQ9 from an Escalade swap into my 1970 Chevelle and would prefer to use the factory harness. This is the first set of instructions that made sense. Thanks a ton!
Awesome Edward! Glad to hear it man! Good luck!
If you wanna keep the big ass ugly fuse block...this is the cheapest way to do it! Thanks mark!
warren Yesssir! Thanks Warren!
Awesome job my friend, and it will clean up nicely once you peal all the wires away, because there is, like you said only two real wires to power it, and the rest are O2, map, tps, sensors and so on, and so on. Anyway thanks for sharing, and keep up the awesome work.
+Chevy King Thanks Chevy King! Will Do!
No prob.
I like the way you keep it simple to understand, and well explained.
Good Job!
I would like to see more.
Thanks.
Joe V QCC
Thank you Joe! Hopefully I'll be getting more up soon.
