Is Salt Bad for ME??? (Hidden Research) 2024

  • Is salt bad for me, or you? This question has plagued doctors and patients since the 1960's, even though the answer is very clear. You won't believe the research that has been used to recommend how much salt you should eat!
Salt tastes great, and we all love it. Are we silly salt addicts who just can't control ourselves, or are we supposed to eat salt daily for proper function and health? Is salt something our body needs, or a poison that we should avoid as much as possible? This important question needs to be answered.
Does the amount and type of salt we eat matter? Should we buy the cheapest salt we can find, and then eat the least amount of it we can? Or, should we buy a quality salt, and then eat it whenever we want it? These are the questions I address in this video.

Dr. Jan Staessen, head of the Research Unit on Hypertension, University of Leuven - Belgium, “The evidence relating blood pressure to salt intake does not translate into an increased risk of incident hypertension in people consuming a usual salt diet.”
Dr. Andrew Mente, of McMaster, University in Canada “We found that regardless of whether people have high blood pressure, low-sodium intake is related to more heart attacks, strokes and deaths compared to average intake,”
Chris Kresser, M.S., L.Ac. - " The amount of conflicting research that exists on salt is astounding. Hundreds of studies have been conducted on salt intake, and a consistent pattern has never been established for sodium’s role in a variety of negative health outcomes. At a minimum, it seems absurd that so much time, energy, and money is spent on trying to reduce the amount of salt that Americans eat, considering how weak the evidence is on this issue."

I was at a company Christmas dinner last night and out of ten people at the table, I was the only one to use the salt or pepper. I got a lecture from three people about salting my meal too much. Wish I had seen this video just one day earlier. My whole family craves salt and have always used it liberally. My mom lived to age 92 and was the biggest users of salt ever! Thank you for validating that my use of salt is okay! You are my hero!

I carry Himalayan pink salt in my purse. Big crystals. I take about 3/4 tsp at a time, on the tongue, and then take a few sips of black coffee or something. People think I'm nuts. They are the ones behind the times on salt.

When your sodium is too low it's called hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is dangerous and can kill you.
In fact, my mom is 82 years old and has been going 5 minute long intervals on a recumbent exercise bike 6 times a day. She pedals between 60 RPM and around 85 RPM depending on how she feels. During this cardio exercise her heart rate varies from 113 to 135 beats per minute.
When her sodium and potassium levels are low her heart rate is up to 15 beats per minute faster while she's pedaling 10 RPM slower. She can do 2 or 3 intervals with consistent results, then consume about 3 cups of water with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of LoSalt, which is 40% sodium chloride and 60% potassium chloride with a touch of magnesium chloride and the next time on the machine she is easily pedaling 10 RPM faster with a heart rate 15 beats per minute slower.
This dose lasts her 2 to 3 days before her heart rate increases again and she needs another dose. This is very consistent, as it happens exactly the same again and again. This is therefor NOT anecdotal evidence. This is a valid repeatable scientific experiment. My mother has a body which consistently eliminates too much sodium resulting in her experiencing lower than normal blood pressure and lower than normal blood volume which results in a higher resting and exercising heart rate. Consuming extra sodium and potassium resolves the issue for a few days. She also tries to put LoSalt on everything she eats, but that's not enough.

Hey Doc Berry, you are soooo appreciated! Thank you for the straight talk! My family looks at me like I'm looney tunes, because I'll walk into the kitchen, grab the salt shaker and toss a couple of shakes into my hand and down it! It tastes so good! We only use the mineral enriched pink Himalayan type.
So. Here's part of my daily intake: in about 24oz of water, i put 3 tbl spoons of Apple Cider vinegar, 3 tbl spoons of Organic Lemon juice, 1/2 tsp of Pink Himalayan salt & 1/2 tsp of Cream of Tartar because it's high in potassium. It's like a lemonade. Try it!
      Thanks again, and

I agree. There are even custom salt licks and salt formulated specifically based on the wild and domesticated breeds and geology. I also want to say there are custom formulation for desired traits... though I am going out on a limb educated guessing on that one. Amazing however to think animals get better personalized treatment for their health than humans in some cases.
Why does the RDA not have higher potassium compared to sodium intake recommendation? Did you happen to have a reference to this?
I'll try to read into more... though I totally plan my low sodium or regular iodized salt intake based on my activity level for the day in the morning and throughout the day. More sodium more stimulated, more potassium more depressed. Amazing how those minerals work like that along with the others like Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc and the biochemical choline.
I found that out when fasting after removing carbs from my system and going more mild to moderate ketogenic. I was amazed how the carbs were like stimulants and then to find how sodium was like a stimulant also and later choline... though I test with and seem to notice choline with inositol lately stimulating also.

    • @jafinch78
      @jafinch78 5 лет назад

I should add on top of the minerals, choline and inositol that the other B Vitamins have interesting stimulating effects and depressing effects... though that is like amino acids, lipids and more detailed discussion of carbos that I can go on for a while writing about. Thanks Dr. Berry!

I hope you hear this Gordon along with Doc Ken this is a reset the last one was in the early 1800’s. Ive had spells where my vision was a little “off” (for lack of a better term) and i put a little salt in the palm of my hand and licked it off. It was an instinctual thing and it cleared up my vision within a few minutes.
Many years later my mother had the same thing happen with her vision. I told her what i tried that fixed it, she tried it, and it worked for her also. I never had it checked out to determine what the root cause was, but my instinct was to get some salt in my system and it worked.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Ok I'll eat normal salt like my family and if it goes up very high then I'll take a pressure pill. It's only 6 months since I've been using pink Himalayan salt, before I was using the Celtic Sea salt.
It has been 5 months since my blood pressure got high, and I went to the emergency room; I spent 6 hours there; blood tests etc was taken and the doctor said that my heart and everything is normal, but my blood pressure is high 146/95. He said you can go home now, and see your family doctor in the morning.
I went to my family doctor the next day and he prescribed Avapro pills 150 mg for me, after a few days he cut my dosage in half, because my pressure was getting too low; am now taking 75 mg, on alternate days, with the advice of my doctor, because most days my pressure is low.
Sometimes my pressure gets as low as 89/58 and 95/68. Other times it gets as high as 139/90 and 145/95; only twice a week it gets high like this, although I'm consuming less salt.
I'm 63 year old woman, 5' 4" tall and weighed 115 lbs, but since 4 months now I'm on a low-carb low-fat diet, and lost 15 lbs. I'm now down to only 100 lbs; I look skinny but I don't mind it too much because am getting rid of my diabetes.
I did my A1C at the end of October and my doctor said that my magnesium and potassium etc is good. My sugar also went down from 6.4 to 6.0 and my doctor cut my Glucophage dosage of 2000 mg daily, to 1000 mg daily, then, he cut it down again to 500 mg daily, which I take at breakfast time only.
I shall soon stop that 500 mg Glucophage, and I don't want to take any other prescribed medications ever again. I also want to stop the 75 mg Avapro pressure pill which I take on alternate days.
Thanks again and take care of your health; God bless you.

Sad story: In the last decade of my grandmother's life she would hide salt packets and eat them in secret because, on her doctor's orders, she was ordered to reduce salt as much as possible because she had heart problems, but this also caused her to crave it. My mom would go through her things and find all the small packets from fast-food restaurants she had stashed and get rid of them, thinking she was saving my grandmother, calling her a "saltaholic." So sad that we are still advising people to do things that are terrible for them.

My elderly mom took to heart (no pun intended) the advice ‘restrict salt’ for her kidney health and because of high blood pressure (she had high blood pressure most of her adult life and one kidney, because of losing a kidney to a congenital defect). Doctors always told her to drink lots of water and restrict salt. This seemed okay when she was younger but as she grew more elderly, I worried about this lifestyle advice. When she was 87 she developed a serious dip in her sodium level (because of drinking large amounts of water coupled with restricting salt). She developed a change in mood - extreme agitation - and experienced stroke like symptoms. She was rushed to the ER and then went into the ICU because her sodium was low enough she could have died. She recovered, but what a scare!

Read "The Salt Fix" It is mentioned in there that someone who gestates in a mother that restricted sodium can have a much bigger craving for it due to that important period of gestation when your "salt thermostat" was set. Unfortunately this can also lead to a more addictive personality too. Easier to be addicted to some drugs.

I've been eating keto for 4 months now, mainly thanks to Dr Berry. I've dropped 20lbs, and often eat one meal per day now. Rarely feel hungry, and don't get the low blood sugar crashes anymore. My energy levels have never been better, and my mental sharpness is dramatically improved. My mood is also much more stable and positive. I could list more positive changes I have witnessed from going keto, but you'd probably think I was lying. Thank you Dr Berry!

I saw a presentation recently by an Australian doctor that revealed salt intake graphed against all case mortality was what was called a "J" curve. As people consumed under 3 grams of salt (NaCl) their risk of death rose very sharply as their consumption declined and it leveled out between 3 and 5 grams as safest, and then it rose slowly as you consumed over that amount. The dietary guideline of 2300 mg max. per day was not optimally healthy, In fact your risk of mortality at 6000 mg is about equal to 2300 mg. But people, and professionals are very slow to realize that the old guidelines were bad for us. I still have to remind my wife to eat more salt. Just shake my head, so sad.

salt and sodium are not the same... 2300 mg sodium is 8g of sea salt. salt is 30- 40% sodium. In the 1950s, people were told to eat between 7.5 and 15g of salt per day and athletes at least 25g per day

I have been keto since May 2017. I was having tachycardia fairly often so I took an electrolyte supplement and it would go away. The supplement had 1000mg potassium. It also had salt and Mag. I was already eating enough potassium in my diet most days with my spinach and avocado, etc. I kept getting the random 120 hr knowing I was getting enough potassium. I did a week experiment twice. I took my food potassium rich foods away and waited to get tachy heart and treated it with pink salt only. It went away every time. I was so glad to stop worrying about supplementing my potassium level. I eat pretty clean keto and rarely eat out so not getting much added salt in my food. Pink salt for the win! 5lbs Sherpa extra fine Himalayan pink salt on Az is $14. It is a necessity. People get ya some good mineral salt. It makes me feel great. Your body can tell you to eat when it is needing salt and make you more hungry that you should be so it helps with cravings as well.

But one of the Carnivore "elders" as I call em, Dana Spencer, hasn't eaten salt with her meat for like 10 years and looks and feels amazing at I think 56. So it doesnt seem to be required at all. Plus where would deer n other mammals including our ancestors have gotten salt from without our salt licks and shakers? I dont think most animals get salt from salt mines. There is sodium in meat. As well as potassium. Surely enough for indigenous people and wild animals to survive. I'm genuinely looking for a definitive answer atm. Idk how prevalent sodium rich rocks and mountains are throughout the world.

Tendency towards rosacea. You know how I know ? When I eat food with increases sodium I have similar symptoms in my skin too. So yeah if you want to look puffy, irritable, develop neurological diseases ( do your research) go ahead put salt on everything, standard American diet has way too much sodium and if you listen to this guy, you will have autoimmune, cancer, stroke or high blood pressure pretty soon. Test it on yourself. Eat high salt diet for 5 days and then low salt diet for 5 days and see how you look and feel. Some people may need more sodium but majority do not. Sodium is in every vegetable and fruit and we get enough of it by just eating basic diet.

The keto dogma recommends too much salt which can electrolyte imbalance of potassium and magnesium imo. There are plenty of folk thriving on no added salt whatsoever, so clearly it's all about electrolyte balance. You are making it sound like people need to consume more sodium than potassium which is wrong but hey, if your doing fine go with it I guess.

So, just wondering, how does this relate to when we eat ham, for example, and end up with swollen hands and feet? Or my elderly father's CHF and hypertension, with swollen ankles and legs unless he severely limits sodium? Thanks for your advice...

Dorothy Tarr , I was just wondering the same thing. I swell up daily and have to take water pills. My doctor says it’s from being obese and gravity. The water pills do nothing really. My dad had CHF. I get confused about all of this. I have high blood pressure too. So confused about it all.

@@skinnydee1886 If you have CHF or other conditions, drink more water, it balances the salt.

Read “the salt fix” by Dr. DeNicolantio. He will debunk the salt myth even further. We need salt. Lowering our salt consumption hurts us more than eating too much. Our kidneys, if healthy, can rid the excess from our body. Really listen to Dr. Berry’s video again and truly hear what he’s saying. Today’s doctors are making recommendations on salt restriction based on bad information and POORLY done research done on rats, then politicians got involved. So, we are eating less salt because someone thinks we should, NOT based on evidence derived from a study done in a fashion that is VALID.

First, get yourself into ketosis! Then after adjusting meds, adjust water and salt.

What about people on carnivore for longer periods that tend to not use salt much if at all? And Steffansons acounts of the Inuit not using it, there word for salt translated to evil tasting. Is it only necessary if you are sweating and exercising hardcore?

I think we need a balance, the right amount of everything, too much or too little of everything isn't good.
We like sugar but cream cakes all day isn't good, we love fat and oil but burger and fries all day every day isn't good, it's about balance.

When I started Keto, my edema left on its own. Halved my water pill and lost my stolen ankles.
