No problem buddy I’ll keep them coming, I think mixing up the styles of content helps. Principles are great but sometimes you need specifics of exact situations to really understand as well.
Totally agree. One of the best jiu-jitsu books I have is not techniques it is all. It's all concepts. Totally love 😍 these videos!! More like this please 🙏
As a Judoka this lever thing was really informative. We do all this on instinct but nobody ever put it so clearly into words for me. The one thing I would suggest is to learn to break grips with one hand like in Judo. Its another tool in your toolbox and comes in very handy
Really interesting I was talking with a high level judoka tonight and I discussed this concept with him because intuitively it would make sense for judo as well, then we got into the conversation of breaking posture and having to break their grip with one hand, since apparently you can’t break with two hand in judo anymore I guess.
I’ve noticed really experienced Judo players do these things instinctively. Breaking posture and off balancing is exactly what is being taught here. It’s also the key for stand up before any throw can actually be executed. Fight for grips, grip break to maintain dominant position, control the other guys posture, off balance/kazushi opponent before throwing.
as a little dude, i really needed this concept. Please continue to talk about important principles like this, especially ones where a little guy can do to a big guy.
I love how you define a principle with the technique. I’m a beginner and every time I learn something I need to understand the mechanics, it allows me understand the situation and options I find myself on the mat. Thanks
Jon, keep teaching concepts! You’re a great instructor and one of three people I’ll watch on RUclips to find New concepts or deeper level understanding of a concept for tweaking what I’m already doing. I think you do a great job of putting content out that is relative to beginner, middle, and advanced practitioners.
This is literally exactly what I needed. As p much the smallest guy in the gym this is one of my main obstacles. Thanks so much for all your content Jon
Can this technique be used in the real world where people don't wear a Gi! Real grappling happens in T-shirts on hard pavement not Dojos with Gi wearing gym rats.
@@eladbaron3888 Yes, but if you rely on techniques which depend on holds using a gi you'll be at a serious disadvantage when confronted with a situation outside of a dojo. Learning basic wrestling and judo skills is more important than the silly techniques they teach in most martial arts classes.
Happy to hear it buddy! The big thing is using collar sleeve is such a useful addition, because they will break your collar grip when this annoys them, but when you add in sleeve control then they can’t.
Between you and Clark Gracie, my game has grown with all of these tools. Thanks for the videos and tips! I'm a lanky 6'6" 200 lbs and really flexible so I've been using the lasso and/or spider guard a lot. When it's set up right with the sleeve/collar grips and deep lasso, it can really frustrate and stall out even higher belts, even more so due to my size mismatch. So many sweeps, attacks and ability to control tempo and stall from here. Such an important concept here to keep the position fluid by switching grips and transitions. Of course, when I'm not set up properly or transition poorly, I get smashed extra hard for the trouble. I take it as a sign that it works. :)
With that build you are going to be very frustrating for people to deal with lol. Yeah deep lasso is great too, I have been using it a lot more recently especially when my opponents posture is lower and I can set it, but if they are up taller then I like the shallow lasso collar sleeve and dlr style to attack and break them down. Ultimately mixing all the guards together is the most effective in my opinion.
Love the content here. Since I started watching it like 1,5 year ago i think in each video i was able to find and add at least some small detail to develop my game. Thank You.
Excellent explanation of the physics of body mechanics. The barbell being close to your body(vertical) versus the lever action working against you when the barbell is further away from you is an excellent analogy.
Your insight was brilliant - and now that you have had it it is somewhat clear to see what you're doing there... physics principles, since you cannot increase your weight you are increasing its LEVER ARM - by increasing distance from its fulcrum (your opponent's feet on the ground) 👏👏👏
Amazing stuff as always Jon! Been following your instruction since your "escape from side control" videos. So much knowledge to go through! The community is lucky to have you!
No problem buddy happy to help! I’m gonna be coming out with a collar sleeve instructional soon so it’s gonna have a lot of this stuff with in it and more.
Very good. I was looking for some content on Lasso De La Riva guard and found your stuff. Very good attention to detail on breaking the posture and using distance and frames to do it. If I guy cannot bring his hips forward he can't stand over you. I have noticed this in playing double sleeve with butterfly with feet on the hips and knees inside of the elbows. Thanks for posting great content.
Neat decision tree. That kind of choices to build a guard system shows a well built black belt. Congrats from Brazil. I have something very similar to my guard game, but my main objective is to keep the opponent in the x/oneleg sequences.
No problem happy to help buddy!! I just try to focus on the key things that I think matter. There is so many details in jiu jitsu if you try to explain every detail then you get overwhelmed so big picture is most important
Love the systematic principles, distance and body mechanics you cover. Would be great if you could cover in a future vid, more concepts as such, perhaps when a person is seated, on their knees, to what is going to be available and what not. Hence you're not doing a technique for the sake of it but you understand the very nuances to it.
Hey buddy I have actually done a video like that on establishing guard from no initial grips before, but I’m probably going to redo it with higher quality now with the new format.
Great 👍🏼 tips - my instructor always moves away from bottom for better leverage - I really liked the points regarding capturing the sleeve when the collar grip is broken, only to regain the collar grip along with the sleeve grip…
@@JonThomasBJJ and you made a great point that if you have the collar only that grip is easily broken, but not once you have both collar & sleeve - obvious, but never really thought 💭 about it that way - Oss

Newbie white belt here. One of the things I keep forgetting is the constant adapting and looking for opportunities. Thanks for reminding me that we have to keep at it.
@@JonThomasBJJ At times when playing spider guard or collar sleeve against stronger opponents standing they will drop to their knees and break my grips but I counter with a knee shield. When trying to make distance again to go back to open guard they continually overpower my legs, staple them, and pass to side control. Any tips for working against this or just playing open guard against stronger guys that just smash and pass?

My first gym was a bunch of guys who were 5'7"-5'10" and strong. Lots of wrestlers and guys built like fire hydrants. Most played very fast athletic pressure style games. At 6'6" 200 lbs, it was frustrating for sure getting bulldozed and smashed. I didn't know how to use my advantages until I discovered the lasso and spider guards.
