    That is extraordinarily poor quality work for what he's charging for it... The amount of effort involved doesn't really justify the cost when the effort is put towards doing such a half-assed job. Heck, a lot of that effort is unnecessary, there are a bunch of things he could do in there that would actually reduce the effort while increasing the quality of the work...

    Me seeing the outside: wow that looks good, not bad for what it is.
    Me seeing the inside: OH DEAR GOD! KILL IT, BURN IT!
    seriously though, that thing is a mess, why not just use some IDE style ribbon cables like you did on part of it for the whole thing? That enameled wire is so incredibly thin and honestly, I'd be too worried it was going to short out after a little bit of use. And let's not get started on the hot glue...dear god, the hot glue. You use as little as possible, you don't drown the project in it and shove the components in afterwards while the glue's still hot! They make tape to insulate parts of the board, as well as electrical tape (the first is preferable as electrical tape can degrade more over time) but if you do the project properly and put the tape over anything that could touch something it's not supposed to, it looks a HELL of a lot nicer, that just looks gaudy and a nightmare to work in/repair. Even using the DS Lite's battery compartment felt weird. Just attach it a different way so it doesn't look so...amateur
    TLDR This could have been done so much better if the maker didn't rush it. Nothing wrong with TDNC, you still rock!

    • @1337Shockwav3
      @1337Shockwav3 5 лет назад +3

      it's not like you're constantly wiggling the insides around. Enameled wire takes a good bit of effort to actually break and is quite good at keeping the shape it was formed into.
      On the other hand ... I was wondering why he didn't design a new PCB and use the custom chips from a donor board?

    • @PixelOverload
      @PixelOverload 5 лет назад +1

      I thought about using IDE cables as well but they would take up _far_ more space and there's not a lot of room to spare, your other suggestions would be nice, but custom manufacturing all of that would be way more expensive and not very practical for a few custom one-off mods.
      Personally I'm impressed with the skill involved in taking all these disparate parts and mashing them together in a way that's presentable and functional _without_ resorting to custom manufacturing, even if it's a hot mess under the hood.

    • @JeffreyOsb
      @JeffreyOsb 5 лет назад +1

      IDE cables are pretty rigid and in a form factor this size, would not be logical. Most people aren't going to tear apart the device and actually view the wiring and based on how the board was inserted, they're not going to randomly yank apart. For the engineering minded it looks like a mess but it does serve its purpose. Might be a pain to service though if there are issues later.

    • @DrSalvador555
      @DrSalvador555 5 лет назад

      @@JeffreyOsb I suppose you're right, I hadn't considered their rigidity. It just looks god awful and would make repairs an issue, especially if one of them was shorting out or broke, you'd have to find which one and where. Good luck x.x

    • @JeffreyOsb
      @JeffreyOsb 5 лет назад

      @@DrSalvador555 I appreciate the open mind! I'd say though, since this has non-moving parts, it's not likely that it will break. Most original gameboys and NES (top loaderS), SNES, Genesis/Master System, etc. They all work because they don't have moving parts. The original front loading NES had that moving tray which created issues.
      My point is, I don't see this breaking anytime soon. I do agree, it looks like a nightmare inside but again, with the amoutn of glue holding that case together, it probably wasn't designed to be opened up and tinkered with anyways.

    LISTEN guys and girls... regarding all the negative comments here about Hairo’s work. They are completely unjustified. His customer base and social media page will tell you all you need to know about his products and satisfaction and instead of writing negative comments about the look of his work maybe you should invest in one and find out for yourself with how they play and feel. The work gone into each console is phenomenal and completely unique to Retrohai. It would take years of trial and error to learn how he has put one of these together and to get the genuine Nintendo factory feel he achieves. Yes inside they are different but his knowledge and passion are what you are investing in. They are supposed to be a sealed unit too and not opened or tampered with as in the end you are supposed to play them and enjoy them, not scrutinise them. His soldering and copper wires are pre waxed for insulation and he has fuses wired in for the case there is a short. He isn’t stupid. In fact he is a great guy and very open about his handmade products. I own two of his first original custom gameboys. A DMG103 and a GBP103. Both original Nintendo shells with DS lite hardware and an SD card slot for roms and I’ve owned them for years. They are the best part of my collection and still amaze me to this day that they even exist. Give him a chance and come back to comment again as I guarantee it will be something positive. You will be surprised by how great these gameboys are and what he has been able to achieve on his own. Credit to him and his work.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 5 лет назад +2

      If you can't take criticism, don't go into a creative field. These criticisms are not just aesthetic, they're about the safety. What if a kid gets hurt or killed because of this? What if someone's house gets burned down? His designs on the outside look brilliant, but it's downright dangerous to own one of these and have it around people or your possessions. He'll get better at it I'm sure, but charging hundreds of dollars for what on the inside is a literal hack job that could get people hurt is just a rip off.

      I'm sorry, but a mess like this doesn't show any love at all in my opinion. If you can't take negative comments, then you don't belong in the creative world at all. Love the idea, but not sure about the execution.. All those wire and hotglue .. I wonder on the durability of the device, it seems prone to hardware failure. It seems a tremendous amount of hand work 😊

    Super nice, I especially like the minimal mods to the shell. If someone made a pcb with a color screen for a GB Pocket shell that ran retropie id buy immediately!

    It's been a while since this video was made, it would be cool if you got your hands on a new one from retrohai to see if any things have changed. The insides look pretty messy on this one, surely things have improved with all the new units made.

    Indeed it is an impresive piece of work. But honestly, apart from the form factor of being in a original gameboy shell, it would be easier to just get or make a game boy macro ( modified lower half of a original ds or ds lite ). You'd get the same gaming experience, you can play gba games on the gba slot and use the ds game slot to install emulators just like this one. And another advantage would bd you could keep the touchscreen function, and still be able to play some ds games that don't require upper screen like zelda games, final fantasy 3, resident evil, castlevania ( although you'll be missing the map) and most yugioh games if you don't mind seing how much life points you have left.

    Cool, but the DS Lite screens was always kinda shoddy, tho. Almost every one of them got that yellow/pink tint over the years.

    Clearly this video was intended to put in shame the hard work of RetroHai. This guy is really good modder. I bought the MegaMan Gameboy GOT IT IN MY HANDS in 4 days, and he was open to question, answers and works GREAT. THE AMOUNT OF TIME AND EFFORT on this Mod is Huge. Messy on the inside, hot glue everywhere yeah, But anybody who wants to buy his product, the first thing is to play games and show to other enthusiast something different. And whoever that think this can be done BETTER, well sit, do it yourself and put a price for your Creativity, Time and Passion for this.

      The argument that if you can't do something yourself means you can never criticise it is an absolute nonsense argument and always has been. Can you make a better movie than Transformers? No? Well I guess Transformers is an amazing perfect film then, according to you. This guy makes great looking designs and is really innovative, but people are worried they're gonna kill a kid or burn down their house, it's not just nitpicking criticisms, there's a reason why countries like the US have a shit ton of regulations for electronic devices. Every health and safety rule for them that exists, came into existence because someone had to die first. Actually be dead. In the ground. It's not hyperbole to say things like this are risky to own. Even huge companies like Samsung make exploding electronic devices sometimes, let alone an amateur console hacker.

    I used to think Retrohai faked those because no way DS Lite can be modified in the way into the DMG case... after disassembly now i think they are real....hetrohai really put work on the console even tho it was a mess of wire inside everything still works

    Absolutely detest projects like this, simply because it's gutting existing (often functioning!) hardware that's out of production to create something with fundamentally less functionality.
    Good teardown, though. That hot gluejob...
