My wife took my stepdaughter 2000 Durango to the mechanic today. They charged $185 to check it and said they would change it for $2000 more. I'm going to try your way. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks for the video, where did you get the hoses? Looking online and the oem hoses are 50 bucks oem from dodge that is. I am getting low heat, so I am pretty sure my heater core has build up. Also you mentioned that the hoses got hot when you are running the pump and flushing. What exactly causes the heat? Just curious, you mentioned iron.
Just had an issue with overheating and no heat with my Durango. Those factory clamps are shit. Antifreeze hitting the back of the firewall. Just replaced the clamps with screw on clamps and overheating was gone and I dont smell antifreeze. Changed my blower motor because the resistors kept burning out. No more issues with heat. Cost me less than a thousand dollars.
My was leaking. I bought heater core for less than $40. They wanted $600 to put it in. Me and friend changed it. Took a day and a half. It's a crying shame all the crap you have to take out. Oh yea, I did have to spend about $150. To get a.c. drained and then recharged. I will never do it again !!!
I have a 2003 5.9 r/t will flushing the front also work for the rear or do I need to locate the rear and do it separately? The heads has been redone, thermostat replaced, radiator replaced, water pump working, clutch fan replaced, new hoses. but still overheats.
I have hot heat coming out vent and defrost at same time regardless of setting while not moving. While driving down the road defrost is still hot but vent is cold, depending on outside temperatures. Winter now. Is This a heater core issue ?
So it's not a hole in the heater core but clogged? I have fog coming into the inside when the heater is turned on. can a clogged heater core cause that?
More than likely it’s leaking, his information is good for a clogged core but if you have steam coming out the vents it’s leaking and has to be replaced, in which case the dash has to come out and that’s easier with the steering column dropped….. it’s just one of those necessary evils. This video is 5 years old so no telling what it cost now at a mechanic shop…….. I’m facing the same problem and will probably try it myself but if it’s within your budget I’d probably let a reputable mechanic do it, you’ll probably keep your sanity in tact.
Marie Marquez probably if you just separate the two hoses from the water pump you could test to make sure it's clean by flushing the heater core if no water leaks out from under the dash you would know the core is not the problem. if it NOW smells like antifreeze it's leaking, but u could keep it isolated from the rest of the water (engine), then use stop leak to plug the core leak by circulation (with water n stop leak).
Did you get your issue resolved? I have a similar problem and I am led to believe my heater core has a crack in it that is causing steam to come out of the vents.
Rob it's just a simple utility pump that runs between 40 and $50 you can buy them at Menards Home Depot or Lowe's and they don't have a float assembly you don't need it you just simply plug it in and once you've reduced down to the size of picture poses and then hook up the hoses to the heater core whatever takes to hook it up just hook it up it doesn't matter which direction you flow the water and then about every hour after you put your iron out in it stop and slow at the other traction you do that for a few hours and you will have a very very clean heater core that will work
I filled the five gallon bucket about 4 gallons roughly of water and iron out after I got done flushing it out I ran clear water through it at least twice to get all the iron out of it and then you can hook it back up and put your antifreeze back in it and you should be good to go unless you've got a leak and here is the problem when you get a leak in a heater core if you have a small leak and you put a certain type of stop leak in it it will stop the leak but also stop the flow of water sometimes it's kind of a give-and-take situation with a smaller leak don't use lots of stop leak if it's a largely you're in trouble. might need to replace the heater core.
yeah i dont have any leaks that i know of, just no heat. hoping that this simple fix will work so I don't have to do the treacherous heater core removal
in the video you said you used a gallon and a half of water. in this comment you said 4 gallons. how much did you use with the lime out and how much did you use with the CLR? or did you ujust use one or the other?

My heater core fogs up the windshield, so I wasn't lucky like you were. I'm gonna replace it myself but there are several hours in the job.
That is genius!! I came to RUclips to learn how to change a heater core. I'm gonna do this instead.
I want you to be my mechanic. You sound like you really know your way around a Durango and that's what I have

Would you rather pay the 600?
Damn I did mine myself in about 7 hours
Had a whole bunch of extra screws though lol

Look up Chris fix he has a good video on how to flush the heater core

Yes, or a thermostat failed in the open position
So it's not a hole in the heater core but clogged? I have fog coming into the inside when the heater is turned on. can a clogged heater core cause that?

Smart!!!Thank you Sir
can you show what product you used
great video. can you make a short video on where the grounding straps connect too under the hood?
What kind of pump did you use please?
smoke is coming out of middle vents in my truck..Would doing this help fix that problem?
Marie Marquez

+Lee Pfeifer Thank u I will have brother try that
+Marie Marquez would it start on fire?
Marie Marquez
the only thing that could be smoking is the heater motor, steam could look like smoke ( at 195°).
Did you get your issue resolved?
I have a similar problem and I am led to believe my heater core has a crack in it that is causing steam to come out of the vents.
Man this video wouldve been much better if we got showed step by step instead of just pointing and talking
God bless you!
martin baughman thanks
Thanks, I forgot about that BUT we still use this Dodge daily with NO problems
Where do put the heater core hose
how cant i flush my heater core in my 2006 durango tanks
Do you have any alternate ways to change out the core
Sawsall
what kind of utility pump did you use?
