As someone who works on cars fairly often, you just keep a mental note of what goes where. You also look at the part, and see how it attaches, then, you use the bolts to attach it. When I first started wreching, I put all the bolts in a small bag that was labeled so I knew where everything went. Now I just remember from when I pulled it apart because I've been working on cars for so long now.
i love speed up mode, makes it look so easy. lol. those bolts on the inside of the engine compartment are hard to get to, and if the truck has ac, be sure to have the lines drained, so that you can unhook them to get the box out. im doing another one of these tomorrow, and they are never quick, take your time, lol. great vid guys, very good.
EXCELLENT! Thanks for posting. Now I have to go swap the heater core on my 99 Eldorado Cadillac. At least I have an idea what I'm in for. Too bad they can't make a better design for heater core replacements! GREAT VID!
To be honest i was hoping there was a lil more instruction on disassembling the dash, thats by far the hardest part of this. This video helps a lil bit but still tons of questions
YUP THE SCREW BEHIND THE DIP STICK IS THE DEVIL HIMSELF!!!...Also I had to break off 2 plastic tabs where the heater core sit's in order to fit my new ''thicker'' heater core..you forgot to mention that...ANYWAY'S I found this video to be alot of help thank's.
+CrazyTails Productions The durango in the video is most likely a pre 2003 Durango. I believe 2004+ had the updated consoles and such, and used a different HVAC system...
@ Cooperlakeautomotive- If there is an odorless visible steam emitting from the ac vents, could this be a reason to replace the heater core on a 2000 dodge Durango?
Great video, Would be very helpful to have a discription on the sequence of disassembly . Exactly what needs to be done and in what order...It appears rather complicated for novices..Thanks for sharing..
Do you have the manufacturer name and PN of the revised heater core, I've had 2 Dakotas from new and have never liked how the heater works, I'm getting ready to do some major upgrades to the truck and this would be a perfect time to do the core.
oh wow all this work for a heater core I have to get mine changed out and im thinking I should just take it to a mechanic now this will take up a weekend for me...
QUESTION- a bad heater core will not heat right? mine does heat but its leaking i guess. i have coolant on the drivers side carpet. can it be the heater core or a bad connecting hose?
I will be replacing my heater core soon, I will make an instructional video. Including all tools required, bolts sizes, and where I went for my parts and services. I will make it in reply to this video so people stop asking a mechanic shop to post an instructional video. It's like asking KFC for the secret recipe.
Unfortunately when I was editing I managed to delete a major portion of the job so my plan was foiled. It was pretty easy, I just let the air conditioning go in the atmosphere. Take pictures of connections to reference during rebuild.
my dakota has a bad heater core, i can smell the antifreeze wen i turn my heater on. but i live in georgia and yes, 2010 we had a cold winter...first bit of slush in like 14 years. this just looks like to much work just for like a month of cold weather.
I know nothing cars..so...when the a/c is on..I know water drips off from the front passenger side..are there lines that water drips from? And if so can they get clogged? And if so,where are they located and how do I unclogg them? Thanks everybody!!!
Funny. My Brother-in-law had a old, but mint-condition used BMW 5 series. I wanted to buy it from him, but once the heater-core started leaking he said it would cost more to fix then to junk it. Sad, because that was a mint, full leather package car. BMW lost another customer.
+Lauren George in almost all cars you have to pull the dash to replace a heater core. most people dont realize that a heater core is to heat the interior and the heat comes from the dash, so yes you have pull the dash.
Its the only way. I had my heater core changed on my '98 Durango vhanged 5 years ago. While they changed that ,I had the dealer change both the evaporator & blower motor while the dash was removed. Its better that way.
I changed out the hvac box in my 97 ford...It took me a week. I will never try that again...I would rather swap a motor than take apart the dash. it sucked.
This was a good video but I could have used the real time version.I don't think fast motion did you or me justice.I wish there would have been more side view shots as there was alot hidden and that crazy nut behind the tranny dip stick almost pushed me to the brink.I hope never to have to do a heater core again. .anyway good video and keep on teaching, thanks
you forgot to mention undoing the a/c lines on the fire wall and draining your freon. I would have have been better off going blindy then watching your video wait I did thanks for leaving out the important details
It should have been added, ...if you're replacing your heater core, you may as well replace your A/C unit as well. Because you'll eventually have to remove the dashboard for the A/C, same as you would for the Heater, and it's $1,000 to remove the dash. Be smart and get them both done at once.
Would it not be way easier if the manufacturer just put an access port on the firewall to remove the heater core??? How come they don't put an access port out there instead of making someone do all that? You may as well take it to the junkyard.
What they don't show you is that you have to take the bolt out that holds in the dipstick tube. Hard to get to is an understatement...it took me 45 minutes to take it out and put it back in...the one bolt. There is an 11mm nut behind it that has to come out to get the HVAC unit out. Overall I don't think it was that difficult. You actually don't have to take the dash all the way out and can leave the fuse block connections on the drivers side intact.

this was very useful in the changing of my heater core. Thank you!
You have some great techs. Good job!
thanks for the video, super helpful. Stoked to see a woman working on a vehicle!
thats gotta be a big bill, nice job
Thanks!! Exactly what I was looking for!!!
i pulled my dash put all back together now truck wont start
EXCELLENT! Thanks for posting. Now I have to go swap the heater core on my 99 Eldorado Cadillac. At least I have an idea what I'm in for. Too bad they can't make a better design for heater core replacements! GREAT VID!
So awesome to see a female mechanic!
To be honest i was hoping there was a lil more instruction on disassembling the dash, thats by far the hardest part of this. This video helps a lil bit but still tons of questions
how do you know where all the screws go back on and which are which ?? my head hurts lol
great video. very helpfull on my do it my self.
@MrOzzyfan123 These are not instructional videos and no where does it say that they are. These videos are just to show our work.
helped out a lot thanks !
great job you guys!!!!!!.......
Where did you get the heater core? Replacing heater core in a '99 Durango 5.9L 4x4.
Great design! I bypassed mine because I can dress for the weather. How many hours for a $40 part?
Thanks for this video. Was the foam included in whatever kit you purchased? What kind of foam did you use? Can I find it at my local auto parts store?
YUP THE SCREW BEHIND THE DIP STICK IS THE DEVIL HIMSELF!!!...Also I had to break off 2 plastic tabs where the heater core sit's in order to fit my new ''thicker'' heater core..you forgot to mention that...ANYWAY'S I found this video to be alot of help thank's.
@theJester517 Those panels come off from the back side you take the dash out then you can access the screws
Helpful if you mentioned the year of Durango because it sure doesn't look like mine.

hi. how long did it take to do the whole job.
How much time does it take too change it?
How much does it cost the work of it ?
About the redesigned heater core, what brand was it?
@10kpondguy Thank you for your comment.
How long does this process take?
@honjames5 they had to pull the control head, because the Mode Door Actuators are Vacuum Controlled, and they did not want to mix up the vacuum lines.
i did this same job to my 2000 durango about 2 months ago. Its really not that hard just takes time.
@mike92589 The battery must be unhooked and then let it sit for 5 or 10 mins before beginning.
@atoxx1 Yes you have to discharge it
can't yous just label this job as a pain in the ass.!!!! lol thanks for posting it. this is what i get to do today.
oh wow all this work for a heater core I have to get mine changed out and im thinking I should just take it to a mechanic now this will take up a weekend for me...
What is the average time from start to finish? I'm about to start this job. I have been a number of heater cores, but not on Mopar's.
QUESTION- a bad heater core will not heat right? mine does heat but its leaking i guess. i have coolant on the drivers side carpet. can it be the heater core or a bad connecting hose?
@dmcman1803 Yes you have 2 heater cores
Thats alot of work to get to the heater core.I got 2001 dodge dakota
what about the airbags how do you insure they wont go off im currently doing this verry project
Thanks :)
I have 2000 durango my is started to blow light smoke out the vent And i have rear a/c do i have 2 heater core?
Yeah, what is that cost of the repair? Where in GA are you located??
@Ooomwizard I think the cadi is actually easier.
Is there any way shape or form to replace the blower motor without the removal of the dash?
you have to go through the glove compartment area
@10kpondguy Thanks
@stairmaster3001 This video is not an instructional video this is just to show our work.
@MrDJBNICE Thanks
is this a 3.9

did you end up making that video?
Unfortunately when I was editing I managed to delete a major portion of the job so my plan was foiled. It was pretty easy, I just let the air conditioning go in the atmosphere. Take pictures of connections to reference during rebuild.
@brandonlcole06 This video is just to show our work it is not an instructional video.
@ELCDD Gracias
where can i find a how to video for the a/c blower motor. blows ice cold air just no air comes out of the vents oh btw its a 2000
Gracias no lo pienso hacer yo pues aunque parece facil en verdad es muy laboreoso pero gracias por el video....
It sounds like condensation from your a/c coil. Perhaps there is to much freon in your system?
@mrdirtbag49 We are located at 4739 South Cobb Drive, Smyrna, GA 30080
dude mine has no heat amd have been driving it like that for 2 months with -2 ° in chicago. i need my heater core replaced asap :(
my dakota has a bad heater core, i can smell the antifreeze wen i turn my heater on. but i live in georgia and yes, 2010 we had a cold winter...first bit of slush in like 14 years. this just looks like to much work just for like a month of cold weather.

I really enjoy your videos. How do you remember where all the screws go back too?
u have to disconect the a/c lines to get the heater core out
Trust me ~ Ill never , I mean ever , buy a durango after watching this video..
I have a 98 Durango do I really have to rip out my dashboard?
+Lauren George in almost all cars you have to pull the dash to replace a heater core. most people dont realize that a heater core is to heat the interior and the heat comes from the dash, so yes you have pull the dash.

Cant they make these things less complex? It seems like a lot of work for a part that needs to be replaced on almost every car eventually.
thanks for the vid! Im definitely needed this to get me on the right path, and its a much more shitty one than I expected.
I changed out the hvac box in my 97 ford...It took me a week. I will never try that again...I would rather swap a motor than take apart the dash. it sucked.

holy shit now i'm not taking my 98 dakota apart / got too look for a shop too work on it / i hope its under $ 500.00
I paid 1800.00 for the dealer to change heater core, evaporator & blower motor
yeah i think yall shoud post a slower version of this video its way to fast but other than that good video!
you forgot to mention undoing the a/c lines on the fire wall and draining your freon. I would have have been better off going blindy then watching your video wait I did thanks for leaving out the important details

Real nice video good to see a hottie working too. Ashley can work on anything huh?
