the point your buddy, sam, makes about keeping weight over the front foot is critical for fast turn initiation on steeps. your mind tells you to lean back because you are "falling" but once I got over that and maintained a perpendicular stance (vs. leaning on the back foot) it was a game changer for control on steep terrain
Going into the turn you should be over the front foot but coming out of the turn you need to shift your hips and the weight a little bit on the back because if you're going to be too front coming out of it, you're going to wipe out. And keep vertically medium... Not too high and not to low. And that doesn't mean hinging at the waist which a lot of people do.
Tommie's emphasis on putting weight on the front foot really helped with reducing the strain on the back inner thigh by a lot too. Small but substantial difference
I just went to Wisconsin today to snowboard. I haven’t done snowboarding in 23 years bc I had a horrible experience when I was 9. I’ve been frantically watching your videos this past week and your videos have saved me from wiping out multiple times today! I owned that hill today. Thank you so much!!
On steeps, the one thing that helps to initiate turns I notice for most people is the flex of the board on your front toe or heel edge. For your front leg, you can apply pressure to your heel side by raising your toes to your shins and to your toe side by bringing your knee to your toes. At this point, your back leg is not doing anything and you're basically using skidded turns with a low edge angle to complete the turn on either side. Also, make sure to maintain balance, you don't stand straight up. Make your knees be shock absorbers. If on a scale of 1 to 10, while strapped in, 1 is sitting straight down and 10 is standing straight up with your knees locked, be about a 5. It will help you absorb chatter and bumps, regardless of the angle of the slope.
@@tommiebennett I am a fellow instructor. One of the things they teach us to teach about using C turns on slopes regardless of slope angle is using and shifting between adding forward and aft pressure during, in the middle and in the completion of the turn.
@@SuperGoonch Why can't you slam the brakes on icy or man made terrain? If you have proper balance and keep your knees loose, you should be stop instantly, regardless of the terrain you're on.
@@FesNaqvi If it’s really icy then it is usually better to stick to the groomed, softer terrain that has been exposed to the sun early in the day. In rarer cases, the reverse can work sometimes too: if a slope is nearly always in the shade then the top layer of snow might not have been through the freeze-thaw cycle that tends to generate icy conditions. Use your own judgement but pick the conditions that seem a bit more forgiving if you want to avoid the really icy stuff. CONCLUSION Grandmaster Ice is unquestionably one of the best teachers on the mountain. He can teach us better balance and control - and improve our fundamental skills and technique. Watching him demonstrate the bad technique of standing too tall with knees locked and I literally said “omg that’s actually how I ride, no wonder I keep wiping out” 😭🥲 Thanks for the tips! I’ll definitely work on lowering my center of balance and keeping my body in an athletic stance next time I hit the slopes!
Driving back from a week in Swedish snow with my family. As a 52 year old I love watching the tips and tricks. The videos helped a lot and put a smile on my face 😂
I could watch this guy board for hours. I'm definitely not even close to that level (haven't even made it to an actual mountain yet!) but I'm eager to get back out on the slopes and practice. It's sooooo addicting!
To initiate or start your turn, get low by bending your knees and really driving your front shoulder and front knee down the fall line. After your initiation of the turn imagine that you’re pushing the board away from your body by extending the legs but keep your knees bent. When you’re finished with your turn and your board is perpendicular to the fall line, bend your knees again so your body weight is closer to the snow and that will make it easier to initiate your next turn. When your board starts to chatter, it means that your body weight is too far back, Get your weight over the front foot and start your next turn.
How do you get comfortable with getting your board to go flat like the part 2 of a c turn? I can't wrap my head around how fast he turns. It looks like he's swinging the board around and I can't even begin to understand how to do that lol.
Hey brother, im a surfer.from San Diego land locked in MI. So i started snowboarding. Im now goingndown black diamond runs. Ive only been snowboarding for about 2 month now and i cant stop. Thank you for your videos. They have made a world of difference for me. Keep up the great work brother
I haven't been on a board for 10 years and have only had about 2 days experience total prior to that. I have watched a few of your videos and last week went 2 days back to back 7 hours per day with no major wipeouts thanks to your great advice. Mike 56 years old and still loving it more than ever.
Bro, thanks so much for these videos. My 13yo son and I just started lessons last month, after 2 lessons and watching your videos, we finally conquered a diamond run at Holliday Valley in NY! Your tips have helped us both not only grow every time we ride, but also find our confidence. Keep up the great work!
Tommie, I got to say your videos are by far the best out there. I haven't been on a board in about 15 years, and I just picked up a new board today, your videos helped me regain my confidence and made me want to get back out there, they've also served as a refresher course for me as well as educational, I'm picking up a lot of new tricks and tips from watching your stuff... keep them coming and thank you.
Just wanted to say thank you so much for teaching me how to snowboard for the past year as of today. I know to some this may sound funny to some but I am 💯 RUclips trained and mainly on your videos. I started snowboarding this time last year at 36 years old. I invested a lot of money just in my snowboard gear alone so I was all in. So I'm extremely on a budget so I don't have the money or friends to teach me. So I turn to RUclips and your videos came up and I've been following you every since. I have learned how to S turn, control my speed, carve, Heel pitch, toe pitch you name it. It's all thanks to you. I'm always at Loveland ski resort and it would be pretty awesome for you to be up there in a day when I am. My birthday is coming up on January 23rd love to see you there.
I find that the toe side turn on steep terrain is easier to control my speed than the heel side where your facing down hill. I will usually shorten the heel side turn into more of a slash and then quickly transfer my weight to the front foot to initiate the toe side turn again to slow down to control my downhill speed. When you see boarders sliding down the hill it’s always on their butt. That’s because the heelside turn requires a lot more edge control.
You see much more boarders sliding down on their butt because it is harder to control a fall backwards. You can't push against the snow as well to not fall over, and when you do fall, your board will launch up at first and you need to use your core to bring it back down. When you fall on your front, you can always try to push yourself up with your hands, your board won't launch as easily up, and when it does, you use your thighs to bring it back down which is easier. My toeside turn is actually the weakest right now, but I actually don't fall much because of it, because I can keep some kind of control with my hands and eventually stop or push myself back up and keep going.
When I was learning to longboard down mountains, it was helpful to remember that staying on an edge and keeping pressure in that carving S shape will really help keep control of that board. If you go super straight down you're basically balanced straight up and down so any small bumps will throw your balance off to one side suddenly. The S shape will allow you to put pressure on one edge and that'll give you a wider and more stable stance to balance on. Snowboards have the added benefit of being able to control their speed a bit more since they are on snow instead of hard roads.
Bro... first year with a season pass and going faster and down steeper runs is my hurdle right now. This was amazing! I think a big part for me is overcoming the fear. I’ve gotten better at keeping my weight forward, just a lot of time breaking and would like to go faster. Have gone up 12 times already to Big Sky and ready to crush it some more after watching your videos.
Just started snowboarding two weeks ago I'm 35 yesterday was my third time I got a little too confident as I was slowing down with my toes backwards but myself up. My advice is just take it easy. Still it was one of the most fun I've ever had
Great points about reading the terrain. How about doing something regarding terrain that's steep and then flattens out.. Many beginners have difficulty maintaining enough momentum to make it past the flat part and some tips to keep from having to take a boot out and skate out of a low area. You're a legend yeww
Hey Tommie! Thanks for these videos! I teach at a small hill in the Midwest. I use your videos to improve my own riding, as well as come up with new techniques and word cues to improve my teaching. Awesome vids!
Tommy used your change of elevation technique Wow what a difference This is a must see for inexperienced snowboarders You dont need to twist your body all over the place Thank you Thank you
I like the advice about leading with your front arm that is crucial. One thing I don't hear very often is flexion and extension. That is bend your knees into the turn and stand up out of your turn. That is critical to reduce contact with the snow when transitioning. Also you can shorten your turns and still check your speed just as much. short fluid turns and rhythmic. Try to keep that trailing arm quiet. Maybe even grab your jacket so you don't use it. This guy is pretty smooth but holds his turn out a little too long. You can hold out your turn on smooth terrain but when it gets bumpy you really need to shorten it up.
Just started snowboarding! I did my 3rd session yesterday and I had a lot of trouble on a steep run, I will definitely try these tips and "commit" to putting weight on my front leg

Thanks these are always useful! I first started snowboarding at 29, and never hit the slopes before in any capacity. I've been a couple times since, but never enough, therefore, I still consider myself a relative noob. The slopes are closed down due to lockdown here right now, but I am working on my core and leg strength, as well as my ankle strength, and general balance and stability, so that I set myself up for success when I finally do get to hit the slopes. It makes it so much easier to be daring when I know I can trust my body. Did you ever share what workout you do in prep for snowboard season?
Tommie, your tips have been a game changer for me. I only started riding last season but I felt extremely prepared watching a ton of your videos. The biggest thing I struggled with is being able to turn down steep terrain, especially toe side. I always felt like the board wouldn't move no matter how much I tried, or moved my arm. I think I see the problem now, I need way more weight on the front foot, which feels counter-intuitive but it makes sense. CANT WAIT for my province to end lockdown so I can get back on the slopes!! Thank you for everything!
Love watching your videos! There's usually at least one or two little things that I find myself doing wrong after each video, and your tips are a gamechanger. You've helped turn this longtime skier into a semi-decent snowboarder
I’ve been working on exactly this. It feels to me though that Meadows blues are more like the blacks at other local resorts, I went to the resort next door on Tuesday and I felt like a total Boss ripping that terrain. I’m not a bug fan of nose down bombing runs. I prefer to keep my speed down and rip as many turns each run as possible!!!
Hey Tommie, thanks for also riding switch for some sections! I ride goofy and it's hard for me to mentally flip the image of people who ride regular, so seeing your turns riding switch were a great one-to-one reference for how I should be riding. That move at 4:18 was so sick too!

Hey Tommie, been a skier my entire Winter sport career, but thinking about trying snowboarding. Your videos have been really helpful and encouraging! thanks!
This is super helpful. Steep runs make me so nervous but now I know it's because I'm too straight standing up. Def hitting up Sam about the helmet too! Thanks a ton.
Awesome advice on all your videos. I’ve been watching them for weeks now prepping for my trip on February 3rd. Need to avoid what happened last year when I injured my shoulder.
Just boarded for the first time 2 days ago and honestly I just hopped on and kinda figured it out and for me steep wasn’t even an issue it was the slower almost flatter sections where I struggled trying to keep straight
To be honest one of the best tips I ever had from a snowboarding instructor was keep more weight on the downhill leg. once I started doing that my snowboarding became drastically different and much easier. even though it's a board it doesn't really handle like any other board you will ever ride which I think throws people off when you snowboard with your weight over the rear it's kind of like driving your car in reverse super fast, as long as you're going in mostly a straight line you're okay but as soon as you turn a little bit too much the rear tires catch and you spin about, whereas snowboarding with your weight downhill is sort of like pushing a shopping cart backwards, it's much easier and if you want to straighten out it's not a big deal, the shopping cart doesn't have a tendency to want to spin if you get the front end out while pushing it backwards. which of course makes it super interesting that when you're riding in powder you have to act more like a surfer or wakeboarder with your weight way over the rear whereas when you're on more hard packed snow you treat it more like a snowboard. This sport is a lot more complicated than. People give it credit for! Lol
Best of oh…..a hundred videos! Keepin it simple. Love it. Maybe a short video on first day exercises with the board to wake up skills from last year.👍🏻
Hey Tommie, I'd like to see you explaining how to snowboard on flat terain, and share you knowledge with us. Thank you in advance. Big LIKE from Serbia
I went on my first couple black diamonds this previous weekend, I learned that the only reason that I was having a hard time before and never even wanted to try them was entirely because of mental block. I was too scared. I've had the skills to take black diamonds but was just getting in my own head so when I had tried it years ago it was a mess. This was good to watch still though because you can actually voice and explain the issues I had and didn't know how to put into words properly.
I have changed from snowboarding to skiing. AND I REGRET DOING THAT. So what that means I haven’t been on a snowboard for 7 years. Now me watching other people snowboarding makes me wanting to go back
Your ability to to break down complex information and then gradually build the knowledge up layer by layer is amazing. Also your positive attitude and love of snowboarding is infectious:) Tommie B is the absolute shit 😎
Tall guy here. Bending the knees more and staying centered(not leaning over your toes) was a game changer. Instantly more comfortable on everything. Can really sink into turns, steeps, jumps, etc. Just take breaks when your legs get tired. Don't get lazy . That's when you catch an edge(learned the hard way more than once)
Thank you very much for this video I am the one who is stuck on this topic which was very helpfull to overcome with your guide. Thanks a lot and Cheers from Turkiye (Turkey).
Would be good to have tips on how to fall on those runs. Sometimes falling is inevitable and the sensation I have is that I would never stop if I fall.
This is so helpful! I recently started snowboarding and I’m still uncomfortable riding steep terrains. I’m sure this vid will help me next time I snowboard! Thank u 😊
lol, at the beginning of the video you're by the sign for Tourist Trap. I'm not the best snowboarder, but my partner loves skiing vail and loves Riva Ridge, so I get stuck going down tourist trap several times just to keep up. Maybe after watching this video I'll struggle less going down tourist trap next time I go to vail.
Love your videos and advice. it seems like every season I'm improving, but on the first season run, it's almost as if my body forgets how to handle certain terrains. 😅 Until I warm up..
Great video. So what I'm hearing here is on a steep if you start hearing some cha cha cha chatter, immediately get lower, because you're probably not low enough

Hey Tommie, been a skier my entire Winter sport career, but thinking about trying snowboarding. Your videos have been really helpful and encouraging! thanks!
As someone that recently figured out how to carve and do my S turns, this helps so much!!! Diamond hills always intimidating for me
Super appreciate demonstrating both in goofy and regular! Nice video, man.
Well done Tommie Dood. Keep educating, inspiring and encouraging others my friend.
I keep coming back to your content. Excellent as always.👍👍
Big LIKE from Serbia
beautifull do a videos of just snowboarding and no talking Just wanna see you snowboard learnt a lot from you cheers from sweden
Now me watching other people snowboarding makes me wanting to go back
Thank you! You are my idol! ❤ your videos are sooo awesome! Took me 6 years to make my first S Turn thanks to your video.
Thanks! Total newbie here and having these visuals is super helpful.
Your ability to to break down complex information and then gradually build the knowledge up layer by layer is amazing. Also your positive attitude and love of snowboarding is infectious:) Tommie B is the absolute shit 😎
You like my big brother! You have taught me so many things, much love! Happy riding🤙🏂
I'm so impressed by the camera guy. extra boss points to make video so smooth! But great tutorial as well.
Thank you very much for this video I am the one who is stuck on this topic which was very helpfull to overcome with your guide. Thanks a lot and Cheers from Turkiye (Turkey).
This helps my fear of going to fast and getting out of control. Controlled turns on steep terrain keeps my ass happy and safe.
Thanks so much for this. Your videos are helping me improve my ride technique and confidence on the mountain!
Would be good to have tips on how to fall on those runs. Sometimes falling is inevitable and the sensation I have is that I would never stop if I fall.
Really enjoy watching your videos! really helpful in explaining how things work!
This is so helpful! I recently started snowboarding and I’m still uncomfortable riding steep terrains. I’m sure this vid will help me next time I snowboard! Thank u 😊
The videos you make a lot people. It's fantastic. Thank you.
Meant the videos you make help out a lot people. I am one of them and I appreciate the content. Keep up the great tips.
Duuuude! I've got soo much better this season thanks to your videos! Thanks so much! Just grabbed some stickers too!
Another great vid. While I know I need to get lower when riding, at least I am not standing straight up like you demonstrate! Merry Christmas!
That’s right. Lol
Let's gooooo
Nice video Tommy very helpful for a guy who just starting snowboarding
Thanks for all the advice g! Just finished day 2 at wolf creek and I’m shredding thanks in big part to your videos
tourist trap in vail haha, i remember rolling down that when it was really icy
thanks for the advice, u solve all my problems, nothing but love
Love your vids. Very informative and just a joy to see you snowboard.
so glad I found your instagram page and videos. You're so helpful. Thanks!
As usual, great content that is easily digested. Thanks!!!
You never disappoint bro! Amazing content, and your ability as a teacher through these videos is perfection.
get it Tommie!!! steeeps 🤤 ... def need the weight to shift to the front foot for turning...
Keep up the awesome videos! Learning to board down here in AZ thanks for the tips and tricks!!
very small underrated chanell, but you're growing and with that quality of content you're gonna grow fast
Thanks for the advice I went a few days ago and your videos really helped me be better
lol, at the beginning of the video you're by the sign for Tourist Trap. I'm not the best snowboarder, but my partner loves skiing vail and loves Riva Ridge, so I get stuck going down tourist trap several times just to keep up. Maybe after watching this video I'll struggle less going down tourist trap next time I go to vail.
First timer. Like your energy
going up again tomorrow for like the 8th time this season and i'm still binge watching snowboarding videos
Always a lot of help man. Thank you and happy new year!
Thanks for all your hard work tommie! Keep it up!
Love your videos and advice. it seems like every season I'm improving, but on the first season run, it's almost as if my body forgets how to handle certain terrains. 😅 Until I warm up..
Thanks, I like this video. Will rewatch. Yeah is varying out there icier hard, and piles of soft. Plenty of ways to fall.
Great video. So what I'm hearing here is on a steep if you start hearing some cha cha cha chatter, immediately get lower, because you're probably not low enough
You pointed out my mistakes. I can turn my board in steep terrain but not stable after turn. I will try to practice to lower my body during turning to toe side. Thanks
Love the charisma, love the vibe man. 🤙🤙
Exactly what I needed to here (and see !!) coming from the best.... Thank you Tommie........
