    the point your buddy, sam, makes about keeping weight over the front foot is critical for fast turn initiation on steeps. your mind tells you to lean back because you are "falling" but once I got over that and maintained a perpendicular stance (vs. leaning on the back foot) it was a game changer for control on steep terrain

    • @ibrahimtaheraly4861

      Going into the turn you should be over the front foot but coming out of the turn you need to shift your hips and the weight a little bit on the back because if you're going to be too front coming out of it, you're going to wipe out. And keep vertically medium... Not too high and not to low. And that doesn't mean hinging at the waist which a lot of people do.

      @@FesNaqvi If it’s really icy then it is usually better to stick to the groomed, softer terrain that has been exposed to the sun early in the day.
      In rarer cases, the reverse can work sometimes too: if a slope is nearly always in the shade then the top layer of snow might not have been through the freeze-thaw cycle that tends to generate icy conditions.
      Use your own judgement but pick the conditions that seem a bit more forgiving if you want to avoid the really icy stuff.

    On steeps, the one thing that helps to initiate turns I notice for most people is the flex of the board on your front toe or heel edge. For your front leg, you can apply pressure to your heel side by raising your toes to your shins and to your toe side by bringing your knee to your toes. At this point, your back leg is not doing anything and you're basically using skidded turns with a low edge angle to complete the turn on either side.
    Also, make sure to maintain balance, you don't stand straight up. Make your knees be shock absorbers. If on a scale of 1 to 10, while strapped in, 1 is sitting straight down and 10 is standing straight up with your knees locked, be about a 5. It will help you absorb chatter and bumps, regardless of the angle of the slope.

    • @FesNaqvi
      @FesNaqvi 3 года назад +3

      @@tommiebennett I am a fellow instructor. One of the things they teach us to teach about using C turns on slopes regardless of slope angle is using and shifting between adding forward and aft pressure during, in the middle and in the completion of the turn.

  • @robnestor3371
    @robnestor3371 3 года назад +14

    To initiate or start your turn, get low by bending your knees and really driving your front shoulder and front knee down the fall line. After your initiation of the turn imagine that you’re pushing the board away from your body by extending the legs but keep your knees bent. When you’re finished with your turn and your board is perpendicular to the fall line, bend your knees again so your body weight is closer to the snow and that will make it easier to initiate your next turn. When your board starts to chatter, it means that your body weight is too far back, Get your weight over the front foot and start your next turn.

    I find that the toe side turn on steep terrain is easier to control my speed than the heel side where your facing down hill. I will usually shorten the heel side turn into more of a slash and then quickly transfer my weight to the front foot to initiate the toe side turn again to slow down to control my downhill speed. When you see boarders sliding down the hill it’s always on their butt. That’s because the heelside turn requires a lot more edge control.

    • @tibhamel
      @tibhamel 2 года назад +1

      You see much more boarders sliding down on their butt because it is harder to control a fall backwards. You can't push against the snow as well to not fall over, and when you do fall, your board will launch up at first and you need to use your core to bring it back down. When you fall on your front, you can always try to push yourself up with your hands, your board won't launch as easily up, and when it does, you use your thighs to bring it back down which is easier.
      My toeside turn is actually the weakest right now, but I actually don't fall much because of it, because I can keep some kind of control with my hands and eventually stop or push myself back up and keep going.

      Most of the time this is due to weight distribution. If you clip out in the back of your board you are leaning to the nose too much, same with clipping in the front of you board. Also: try to bend your knees and work with your hip to distribute your weight over your edges. Heel side turn: Make it feel like you are sitting in a chair, toe side turn: get your knees forward and straighten your back so that your spine is basically pointing at your front edge. On the slope you can get a feeling for this by going across the run and really try to exaggerate this movement. At home or off season you can practice this from time to time when you are standing...like when you are brushing teeth - move your hip and knees forward or try to sit in a chair without falling over.

    When I was learning to longboard down mountains, it was helpful to remember that staying on an edge and keeping pressure in that carving S shape will really help keep control of that board. If you go super straight down you're basically balanced straight up and down so any small bumps will throw your balance off to one side suddenly. The S shape will allow you to put pressure on one edge and that'll give you a wider and more stable stance to balance on. Snowboards have the added benefit of being able to control their speed a bit more since they are on snow instead of hard roads.

    I like the advice about leading with your front arm that is crucial. One thing I don't hear very often is flexion and extension. That is bend your knees into the turn and stand up out of your turn. That is critical to reduce contact with the snow when transitioning. Also you can shorten your turns and still check your speed just as much. short fluid turns and rhythmic. Try to keep that trailing arm quiet. Maybe even grab your jacket so you don't use it. This guy is pretty smooth but holds his turn out a little too long. You can hold out your turn on smooth terrain but when it gets bumpy you really need to shorten it up.

    Can you go into more detail of how your body position should be if your going down fast but you want to manage doing those micro brakes/turns? im always confused if im supposed to bend my knees more or do the pushing against the shin, or knee steering technique 😵‍💫

    Just boarded for the first time 2 days ago and honestly I just hopped on and kinda figured it out and for me steep wasn’t even an issue it was the slower almost flatter sections where I struggled trying to keep straight

    Thanks Tommy! Implemented some of this last week boarding in Bulgaria. Definitely felt improvements but struggled a bit on heelside with chatter - despite trying to use knees and shoulders and not pushing down the fall-line. It was under speed mostly, and I felt I was skidding out or slipping on the blacks. Any advice?

    Tommie, your tips have been a game changer for me. I only started riding last season but I felt extremely prepared watching a ton of your videos. The biggest thing I struggled with is being able to turn down steep terrain, especially toe side. I always felt like the board wouldn't move no matter how much I tried, or moved my arm. I think I see the problem now, I need way more weight on the front foot, which feels counter-intuitive but it makes sense. CANT WAIT for my province to end lockdown so I can get back on the slopes!!
    Thank you for everything!

    all well and good but what about on vertical that is at a such a steep angle that when it is frozen in the morning(not to mention when its icey), the board simply can not hook up the edge properly/enough. I stopped to catch my breath a little and even with my knees bent and my weight full on my toes, the toe edge dropped and I went downhill for about 60-70ft on my toe side trying with all my strength to stop. Take into consideration that I was not freerideing in some remote place where I should have some ice axes with me.. no, this was on piste. I could have done it without puting so much control on speed and doing sharp, short turns that put you in the constant situation of slipping down the hill but, due to the gianormous amounts of brake bumps and washed up snow, it would mean above 40 miles per hour dh speed on something very abrupt and very bumpy that's in a shade almost all day(so, you can't see the bumps at speed.. at least at my lvl). Let me clarify how abrupt is: when I finally manage to stop from slipping, turn myself on the heel side and got myself vertical, the sensation is that you are on the edge of a cliff. In the end I said *fveck this shite* and got out diagonally off piste where the snow was fluffy and deep(this portion is above tree area) and I could count on my board to work through turns as a board should.
    I consider myself an intermediate.., until noon, depending on the slope and resort(and the number of ppl who ruin the slopes by braking without reason), on reds and blues, I don't even do speed checks, unless I want it or there is an element that's beyond my control that requires it; on blacks(whatever the type) I always proceed with caution and read the terrain. I must mention I do gravity mtb-ing(I started snowboarding in order to have something to do during the winters) so, I don't have a problem with abrupts or with speed... I simply did not manage to find an answer about what to do in the case I exemplified above(beside maybe get a board with better edge hold? 🙄🤷🏿‍♂️) ; what do you think? (beside, getting used to abrupt, a lack of, at least, some part of control and taking bumps comfortably at speed)
    cheers,
    E.

    lol, at the beginning of the video you're by the sign for Tourist Trap. I'm not the best snowboarder, but my partner loves skiing vail and loves Riva Ridge, so I get stuck going down tourist trap several times just to keep up. Maybe after watching this video I'll struggle less going down tourist trap next time I go to vail.

    Steep hills simply aren’t as fun imo. I’m 40 and don’t want to get hurt so I don’t love a ton of speed. Carving and skidding the board constantly isn’t nearly as fun as milder run and S curving down.

    Bruh. What is this video? I ride trees and wanted to know have to ride them smoother when it gets really. Steep. People actually just go and ride and icy looking steep run???? How is that fun. Really not seeing the point to this vid. I way rather go lean as far back as possible on my board and float on some powder while I smiling listening to music and maybe get a lil stoned😂. Is this just me? This style of riding simply looks sooo boring to me

    Hey Tommie, thanks for also riding switch for some sections! I ride goofy and it's hard for me to mentally flip the image of people who ride regular, so seeing your turns riding switch were a great one-to-one reference for how I should be riding. That move at 4:18 was so sick too!

    That's one of the areas in having problem is with speed down steep terrain, I feel I don't have the control once I'm flying, but I watch my brother-in-law and he's pretty damn fast, even though he has years on me, or decades actually I watch a lot of your vids very good instructions on a lot of material, I still feel I have a lot to learn but I'm getting better each time I go...

    Do it like the guys on a steep ladder, don't look down. I look at the stopping target on snow across my shoulder. The distance and depth are based on your comfort level. One turn at a time; It's no different than going down a green run once you get a hang of it.

    Tommie, I got to say your videos are by far the best out there. I haven't been on a board in about 15 years, and I just picked up a new board today, your videos helped me regain my confidence and made me want to get back out there, they've also served as a refresher course for me as well as educational, I'm picking up a lot of new tricks and tips from watching your stuff... keep them coming and thank you.

    I feel like if I'm digging in my edges and going from one edge to the other, even if I'm not straying far from pointing straight down the hill (just little wiggling turns), the act of making those little carves slows me down a lot. I'm not that great yet but I'd love some input on that.

    Show us a hill where it is so steep you cannot stop and even full sideways full brakes still popping over moguls. What do you do for that? I had that before and tried to be absolutely quick as I could hopping from left to right to try and slow and stay on the trail.

    This guys back arm is all over the place also there was a couple of turns where he lifted his back foot. Advance training is go to a beginner and put your binding on the first click this will teach you about proper body awareness you not be able to get away with throwing your arms around.

    So in this video you stress the initiation of turns with the shoulders. I’ve seen other videos that emphasize the initiation of turns with your lead foot instead, and minimal use of your shoulders.
    Is it just a feeling out process or is there an actual optimal way to do it?
