Duuuude your an awesome teacher. No one has ever made it this clear on the techniques. For ages iv been stuck in the "I'm good enough" mindset and I stopped learning but your videos are so motivating!
This is a clear thinker and has broken down the problem in ways I have not seen done before. After having watched hundreds of videos on speed picking with alternate and sweep techniques, I finally believe I have found someone who articulates the issues generically as well as specifically, and addresses each of them. An incredibly clean and accurate player with not just a killer technique but also a great way to explain what he is doing.
Clearest explanation of the mechanics of sweep picking I have ever heard and seen. A great exposition that has helped me alot even though Neo Classical is not a style I generally play. Thanks for the amazing approach, clarity, confidence building and exercises. Also cleared up the whole issue of economy versus sweep picking definitively. There is no difference. Wow. This video deserves a million views.
YellowCharizar d Oh realyyyyyyy, well thanks for clearing that up I thought he developed some type of floating guitar, thanks for clearing that up, I must look so silly!
+Banter is so much FUN did you play Guitar Hero 3? If you played well using Black Metal guy, his guitar also flew in the air. This video immediately reminded me that
I've gotten more out of the first two videos of yours that I've watched than I have the hundreds of others on youTube. You have an excellent teaching style and break things down perfectly. I've been playing bass for over 30 years finger picking and just picking up 6 string now, this video has gotten me over some of my picking issues just with your break down of how to hold the pick and where to keep your wrist aligned on the bridge. Excellent stuff. Also love in another of your videos where you compare learning to a computer and ram, and long term storage rom... Great stuff. Thank you!
I would like to give you thousands of thumbs up, if I could. Your instructions are so nicely done and you seem to have fun in teaching with your little laughers etc.. It makes you a realy sypathetic guy. Thank you for your lesson. You made me keen on playing guitar again !!
Between the videos from you and Troy Grady, there's going to be a tidal wave of new virtuosos out there, some of which will come up with insane, jaw dropping, other-worldy guitar licks and phrasing. It's a great time to be a guitar player. Your videos are pure gold!
What an excellent lesson and personality. I've been a pro musician and guitarist for years and have found these exercises in particular hugely beneficial for my coordination when playing. Claus you have an exemplary style for instruction. Your pupils must be chomping at the bit to get to their next lesson. Well done man.
I've been playing and noodling for over 50 years. Recently watched quite a few of his videos. Very good teacher in my opinion, no BS. It's not easy to get to another level.
The two string movement that you say "make this your primary sweep picking exercise from now on". Holy crap, that is so much harder than it looks. I've looked close at videos of me playing, and I can do the economy picking "sweep shifting", whatever you choose to call it, when I'm ascending a run, and it's very efficient, however, when I'm descending, I naturally flow into strict alternate picking. I was amazed at how hard that simple two string exercise is for a guy who has been programmed to pick one way for a lifetime. Also, I angle my pick the opposite direction than you do, cutting the string at a bit more of an angle. I'm gonna practice that two string thing until it starts feeling natural. I'm a pretty clean picker, but not as clean as you. Thanks for the great lesson, I love your videos. I've been making a living as a professional guitar instructor since 1991. It's pretty cool to learn something new. Also, what pick are you using? Looks like a stubby, perhaps a 2.0? Man, my favorite guitarist on the planet uses 3.0 stubbys, and that baffles me. Does the thick pick work so well for you because it doesn't slip in your hand as much with your "hold it tight" and don't change angles too much approach? I think I tend to use a bit of flip flop angling when I'm sweeping up and down. I see why you say that's wasted movement, but it certainly feels a bit more comfortable for me.
@@denniscontreras Man that is not an English accent !! WTF?? This dude is from Denmark... Stupid 'Muricans dont know anything about the world, yet think they are the greatest at everything..
I personally found this video to be of great use. I've been struggling with string changes with the right hand picking technique all due to not knowing or being aware of (Much like with sticking patterns associated with drumming) of what's presented herein this video. After watching countless videos (Cracking the Code), the big picture wasn't made clear. This teaching style is what worked for me - just seeing it, it's just like sticking on a kit. I started at age 5 on the kit and remember sticking patterns required to enable movement left or right around the rack toms depending if one was ascending or descending on the toms. At age 7, I switched to guitar and, being in the Boston area, it was folks like Al Di Meola who were doing alternate picking (or so we thought) thus, it messed some players up with regards to certain note patterns wherein, one would stumble or get stuck with sloppy technique due to not being made aware it wasn't alternate picking 100%. Years later at 50 years old, I finally sat down to watch some of Al instructional videos from the 90s era. In those vids, only in a verbal, does Al state alternate picking doesn't work for some phrases thus, the picking pattern is changed to accommodate. The up close shots of the pick-hand, especially the rhythmic pattern while muted removed a mental hangup that I was having for years due to putting little effort in seeking out a solution to a known issue encountered frequently. As the old saying goes, "seek and you shall find". Great video here - nice job on teaching here.
Subscribed again; great lesson teacher, thanks for that; i was doing the same thing years ago but just ddnt stay long enough for control; now i know i must. Thanks again
Just do it like YJM....sweeping to the next string when doing ascending patterns(from the bass strings to the tremble ones) and alternate picking when going descending patterns(from the tremble to the bass strings).its feels so natural to sweep on the next string when you have gravity on your side and to do alternate movements when you go up.....whatever you choose though claus here provides solid solid advices on how to train both.
I got my speed down with alternate an chromatic picking runs & sweep arpeggios 1-5 string need to combine both and this video helped majorly thanks alot! :)
Crazy. Some vids I've watched on sweep picking arpeggios or string shifts they say to hold the pick lightly enough to where it has a little wiggle room. I'm guessing maybe that's okay for sweeping at moderate speeds but the extreme shred, which I like to do, gripping firmly gives you more control. Going to tighten my grip and see if it works. I'll have to retrain my right hand. Good vid. Some good info and you teach it great. Thanks.
great like all your videos, starts with the picking technique, and then very easy liks ,just perfect for begginners.....but there s only one thing I dd like to add...for people who are begginers : friends !... try to play guitar like standing ; from the beggining, or else put the strap on if you stay down.....cause later will be difficult to play standing...this shit happened to me.. someone correct me if Im wrong....happy liks everyone
Very good video. You've corrected some stuff I learned about sweep picking (I forget where), but they said to angle your pick (as you showed not to do) as you go up and down strings during sweep arpeggios. I think I'll trust you more than some random guy online haha.
well done video! it's very beginner friendly and you explain the important facts about developing picking speed and clean playing very clearly. I think the term economypicking should be used when you go from from one string to another in one direction and then play more on that string and sweeping is then used when you go over more than 2 strings in a row which makes it really look like a sweep with your right hand. that's at least how i learnt it and i dont think its something wrong with it ^^ the tabs are not what you actually play in the video, they're slightly different?!
'sweep picking string shift' - isn't that just called 'directional picking'? Anyway, thanks for this video and for explaining the lick. I have been looking for a method for applying alternate picking in a more practical way for so long and I think this video has what I'm looking for.

Nor Norranun Jason Becker is the king of sweeping, hands down.
Eric Stratman but Jason Becker won't break it down like this guy, that's for sure

awesome, I want more, especially around sweep picking arpeggios
