Only The Lonely - The Motels [Extended Version]

  • I love this song from the early eighties. I was 21 when this came out in 1982.
I used the original footage from an old TV show from the day but removed the audience and applause at the beginning and replaced the rather poor audio.
I used Adobe Audition and iMovie to extend sound and vision, adding some repeat verse and chorus elements, (plus a second guitar solo of course - rude not to) as well as adding a few kinda haunting background vocals on the outro. All that was left to do then was to sync up the new extended video to match the longer high-def audio track.
Start to finish took about an hour and I think the result is pretty good although I wish I had found better quality video!
    Enjoy!

I had a girlfriend from down the road. We were teenage lovers. I first saw her when I delivered news papers. Her eyes were a grayish blue. I fell in love. We dated for about a year and half. We went our separate ways one autumn. I heard from her cousin she passed away from breast cancer. I felt that familiar pain once again. I've been to her grave several times. You HAD to live it to get it. So sad that those listening now who never experienced the 80's as they happened do not fully get what some of these songs mean. SOOOO much change was happening. A sleepy Ozzie and Harriet America waking up to globalization. Competition from JAPAN in electronics. Hell everything. Coal dead. Timber dead. Steel dead. Manufacturing in America dead. Pretty somber times.
The fall of the USSR. The relief that the Cold War and the "Mutually Assured Destruction" philosophy that had our US troop stationed in Germany on the Border doing drills at 2 AM that the Russians were invading Western Europe, Pershing NUCLEAR missiles in the UK, and the tensions when Brezhnev (sp) died and Andropov did not live a year....The instability of the USSR. Poland under Lech Walesa opposing the communists. Hungary declaring itself free of the USSR.
Atomic Blonde was a great movie to explain some of it.
The opening of East Europe. The FREEDOM being experienced by so many. The songs reflected the optimism. But then also GIRD (HIV as it was first called) and YOUNG people dropping left and right.
1982 was my HS Graduation year. So much OPTIMISM...

Wow, that singer has the most expressive eyes I've ever seen for a Pop singer. One moment she can look sultry and demure, and the next she throws that crazy Lizzy Borden psycho glance at you. I actually love that!!! A little touch of danger. Seriously though, I've loved this song ever since it came out & I wish the label would've trusted them to deliver more. They certainly had it in them.

As a teen it had it's good points - LOTS of ORIGINAL GREAT movies (not like now where they are picking the bones of those same movies), but this song came out during the recession when people were hurting and the Tylenol murders too. Yes, we had good times but there was a lot of darkness and the never forgotten threat of nuclear war in TV and movies was rampant until the wall fell in 1989!
Nostalgia hides the bad stuff, but going back would slam you with it all, not just the cool stuff.
