I started out as a Ranger in Prophecies, played a Sin through Factions. Could never really get my footing into much with Nightfall, until I finally gave Dervish a really good try, took things slow and really tried to learn how it likes to play.
And by far it is my FAVORITE class in the entire game. Want to be a huge AoE damage dealer? You can do that, and Dervish is probably the best next to Elementalist for this. Wanna be a tanky S.O.B. that refuses to drop? Dervish is quite possibly THEE most resilient class to play in the entire game. I cannot tell you how many times I've had a party almost fail a mission, if not for my Dervish build REFUSING to drop. And even if I did drop, Eternal Aura. Me and most of the party back up in an instant.
As a beginner player this is going to be one of two incredibly difficult advanced (almost master level) classes to try and learn blindly. Guides will help out immensely, but the biggest thing you need is experience. My recommendation if you want to play a Dervish is start out with something similar, but more straight forward.
As a freshly new player I'd highly recommend playing a Warrior, and then once you get a good grasp of that move to a spell casting class. My personal suggestion for a starting spellcaster class would be elementalist (Very good damage dealing builds with some pretty good support style builds as well), or Monk. Which isn't purely healing/damage mitigation, as it has the capability to be more offensive via Smiting prayers.
Once you've gotten a feel for Warrior, and/or a spellcaster, you can look to Factions to try out Assassin. Sin is a Melee caster similarly to Dervish, but it was released first and is easier to play than Dervish. Though in most cases Assassin is more of a glass cannon as it deals high damage, but will drop if you aren't quickly. They like to follow a combo route, which is a useful starting point for learning a flow and will be a huge help for getting you prepared to play Dervish.
100% of Dervish flow combos will go Flash Enchantment->Attack->Attack (Eater, or an attack that removes an enchant from you)->Flash Enchant->Repeat. There are some enchantments Dervish you will want to put on before a flash enchant (Eater skills always use the most recently applied Dervish enchantment first), notable ones being Vital Boon (Boost to Max HP for 20 seconds, heals you at the end of it's duration or when removed), Faithful Intervention (Does nothing initially, but heals you when you hit 50% HP or lower), and my two personal favorites: Intimidating Aura and Eternal Aura, which i usually run together.
Intimidating Aura boosts your Maximum HP, and reduces damage you take from enemies by a flat amount if they have less HP than you. This is good as usually Dervish will have pretty good HP, and HP upkeep, so they can keep doing damage without needing to be healed as often, but this pairs fantastically with Eternal Aura. EA is a skill that boosts your Max HP, but there is no duration on this enchantment. Additionally it doubles as a revival skill, and is the only one able to prevent party wipes in the entirety of Guild Wars 1. Once Eternal Aura ends, either by you removing/eating it or you dying, all party members IN THE AREA are revived with up to 50% HP and 30% energy. This INCLUDES you if you die. If you have a party that knows you're running this, and can keep good positioning around you this can save the day if there's a small mishap, or miscalculation, by someone in the party. And given how resilient Derv's are as a whole, you getting right back up while being instantly surrounded isn't a problem if you have good self healing and damage mitigation, which is where intimidating Aura helps out a lot.
....This was a lot of text, but I just wanted to share some of my knowledge about this profession.

Great guide an info on all classes , back in the day you had socials that wouldn’t give up anything or help folks very much , maybe one day the population will come back to this gem of a game , I think still one of the best for grps an solo stuff.

Not to shit on anyone’s parade, but he shows it’s actually the Ventura’s Harbinger - a cheap green that drops from Strongboxes, not the gold Envoy.
Great video, Peter! I wonder how many people are maining Dervs these days because of your videos.

    Hello Peter.
First of all, great video again. 'Been waiting for the dervish video.
I dont think there is any better video on youtube talking abt the professions.
    Now to my 2nd point.
Could you make a video abt early team compositions? The internet sites can ne very confusing sometimes.
Id also like to have the locations of the needed skills in the video.
And lastly id like a short video about how to craft your first good set of armor.

    •  2 года назад

      thx!
yeah the early team comp is a good idea, just have find a way to show it in an appropriate way
the 1st armor set is kaineng in Factions, consulate docks in Nightfall and Droks in Prophecies but perhaps worth a 1min vid

Amazing video. How many sets of Dervish armor does your character have? I noticed quite a few rune combinations. Trying to figure out how many ways I'll need to stack my pieces. Thanks!

    •  2 года назад

usually I only change the headpiece of my armor
      1. general pve scythe+1+3
      2. vos farm earth+1+3
      3. running mysticism+1+3
      4. some weird wind prayers build wind+1+3 and thats all
Usually I have a mysticism+1 on one of my other armor pieces.

God damn so many amazing builds and variety. I've just been scouring PvXWiki to get ideas on how to build my characters, but their selections are so god damn limited (good luck finding an Elementalist build that's not .. Assassin's Promise + a bunch of PvE-Only skills, making you not really feel like an Elementalist..). I'll peruse your videos more instead. :)

I have one very basic question but it bothers me for as long as I've been playing GW1 (about 16 years) regarding armor:
You keep saying dervish has an armor rating of 70. Does that mean you get 70 armor per armor piece or in total? And if it's the sooner (so 5x70=350) then wearing a shield for instance with 16 armor makes hardly any difference, right? Or is it rather 70 for all armor pieces together and then additional 16 for a shield?

    •  2 года назад

each armor piece has 70armor but ig u get hit by an attack the odds are different which armor piece receives the dmg(see this:wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Armor_rating)
If u wield a shield or use a skill which increase your armor thats global, meaning those effects apply to each armor piece.

    • @janisdinter3657
      @janisdinter3657 2 года назад

@ ok, wow this is even more complicated than I expected. But I got it now. Thank you. Maybe that's worth for you to make an explanatory video on. I'm sure many gw1 players never really knew that
