- If you've already watched the m54 engine build video series, there's a good chance you've seen this vanos rebuild. I made this an independent video for a quick reference for anyone wanting just the vanos rebuild.

Dad's editing skills on 🔥
He’s always getting better, I’m very proud of him ❤️
@@JamiesGarage1 hello sir,how are you?
I'm in Burkina Faso, can I come to your shop for training?
@@JamiesGarage1 yeah he's getting better and we love to see it
And my mechanic has been telling me its normal for my e46 M54 to stutter in the morning and to just give it 5mins to warm up.. Thanks Jamie for an insightful video
lol I get that too sometimes. Wish i had the time and knowledge to make my M54 indestructible
You make it look so simple and easy.
But it is not.
Thanks for sharing a good video.
He does. I was thinking I should start searching Craigslist for one in need of repair.
I had a Vanos cast iron toothed drive ring (belt drive -not chain) break into four peices whilst running on my Volvo V40. It did 10 valves. When I ordered the replacement from Volvo they said they'd never seen it before. It turns out that when the belt had been replaced previously, they jammed it up using a pry bar when torquing up the retaining bolt and cracked it 😐
ouch!
notification squad, Have a nice weekend!🔥🔥🔥
Thanks Dude! You too 🤘
Great video, Jamie. Like I said before, your attention to detail can be used on air cooled 911 engines, or even Lycoming aircraft engines. Dial it up a notch! You can handle it.
If it can be shortened into a 5 minute video then I shouldn’t have anything to fear I’ve never touched a timing set 😅
My e46 hard starts and has no power and threw a crank shaft position sensor code , replaced it no changed same symptoms could this be my vanos ?? I did have vanos rattle when cold starts for a while now
What type oil was used for lubricating?
Vanos: I am inevitable
Didn't see the vehicle applications in the description. Is there any test you can do to verify your vanos needs rebuild?
Oof, nice catch. I updated the description to include the vehicle application. If you have fault codes for the vanos and you have 100k miles or more, then it it's time for a rebuild. The vanos can wear down over time and it won't cause a check engine light, so it's a good idea to rebuild it after 100k miles or so.
Do some N52 videos on what is different between the N54 and N52. My Z4 has the N52 in it.
I've a 325CI - can you define "bad fuel economy" for me, please?
Hi Jamie,
I need help for my bmw 535i can I ask you an advice?
I actually dip the housings in a carb cleaning solution pail. Come out spic n span.
You change slpined shaft? Or only vanos seals and bearings and rattle rings?
What scan tool/program do you use?
jamie do you know any issues for the e46 m3 with the cog light coming up and like if you full throttle it the car has no power?
Excellent and to the point! Thank you 🙏
Hey how many ugga duggas to tighten the nut on the vanos pistons?
3
2.4 😉
I don't know anything about cars, but dame, this was interesting to watch.
what kind of degreaser did you use use?
Good video. Exhaust gases got high pressure that is why, it is harder to compress.
Good video but 70 usd for few gaskets 🤣 those parts can be found for 5th of the price
Full kit with ratle rings is prox 20-30usd, including the new front caps and screws
Good luck with those cheap amazon parts lol.
I Admire you how much you are paying attention to details! Insane! Love it!
What is torque m22 vanos nut?
Can you do some videos on m52 single vanoss ?
Learnt a lot for my f80.
+1 Cinematography
This is Chrisfix engine
Sure shot for the win!!!love mine!!
Content N52/N53 please. The last true BMW N/A inline six, but nothing to find :(
M series engines are the last true BMW sixxers worth mentioning. It all went to shit with the N series engines. Plasticy, leaky, junk.
@@LynxStarAuto plastiky, leaky and junk were already there in M series zzz. N series came with same problem no less, but at least was more powerful
Thanks for do it 👍
.
Noice
😎👍
Finally a new video!!!
А чтож клапана не открутил?)))
Cool
Is vanos wear just mileage related? Or are there other factors to contribute to wear?
Depending on what vanos system you have.
M54 yes. All of these engines have vanos ware out in 40k miles. New seals are much better quality and last much longer. (i have 100k on my rebuild and still strong)
N54 some have problems with the bolts braking. But mostly it's oil change intervals. Example new York city i don't see any vanos problems but people are changing the oil every 3k miles.
Louisiana we have 3 vanos rebuild every week. Most don't change the oil until 12k miles and when they do it's at 5 min oil change for $15.
It's purely related to lack of servicing. Notice how this unit was covered in black sludge/varnish? That's from "extended" oil change intervals. I've got 200k miles on my original vanos unit, my buddy has 250k miles on his. Both M54B30's.
The ms 42/ 43 and 45 (the control unit for the M54) do not send a check engine light if the vanos is malfunctioning.
Run a vanos tolerance scan with auto logic and see the response difference. Many of the M54 vanos need repair but the majority of drivers don't notice.
Mines a 2001 E46 330ci, so M54b30. Got it off my grandfather last year. It's immaculate and has been serviced by BMW main dealer annually, and only had 42k miles on it. I'm dailying it and have got it up to 59k miles pretty quick, but doing oil service every 7.5k miles.
@@busterscrugs No you don't. Stop it. Some of us work on these cars for a living. 🤫
Thanks Jamie!!!
did you upgrade to viton piston seals?
Yes, the seals are the upgraded Viton seals. I should have mentioned that in the video. Thanks!
The vanos is the same in chirs fix bmw engnie
This IS the vanos from Chris Fix engine. This is just a short video taken from that engine rebuild video, part 3.
I gotta do vanoss on both my m54’s :/
One at a time. The 2nd one will be much easier 🤘
Wow so clean!!
I admittedly never clean the outside. And I use assembly lube.
Be careful not to scratch the piston!! All of the diy watching this the piston and bore are extremely soft!!
A razor will scratch it! And you MUST USE SOFT JAWS. Be careful.
What torque did you applied to the pistons' big bolts (the one you have to remove with the vice)? I couldn't find anywhere the reassembly specs for those
BMW doesn’t have a spec for it because they want you to replace the whole unit. I gave it a couple uga dugas with my cordless impact. 🤷♂️
Uff uga dugas destroy my guibo xD so I don’t know man
@@JamiesGarage1 you think I can do it on a wrench
@@JamiesGarage1 don’t have an impact
Just on time! Thanks Jamie
😎
Woah are you in Florida??
Yep! 🌴 🏖
@@JamiesGarage1 sweet, imma bring you my new to me ‘14 335i for an inspection!
@@dr.haroldweinstein5157 Excellent! Looking forward to it!
How dare you talk about your vanos like that! There are children listening!
What's that now?
A Vanos is what?
It is the VVTi system on a BMW and not some new slang?
Oh my...
Here I am thinking he's talking about his Veiny Thanos or something... Land sakes!
That joke went on for far too long and got uncomfortable.
@@LynxStarAuto that's okay..
Can show the removal of the vanos in the next video,🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌
