Greetings from South Africa. Your channel and dedication are the main reasons my 2004 320i have not been to a dealership or shop for many years now. Because of you I have been able to DIY all key issues and continue to drive my car without hesitations or concerns. Thank you Ankur !!!
Just a small note: at 27:06 you mention 6 ft-lb but according to BMW TIS it is 10Nm which equals to something slightly above 7ft-lb :) In case anybody doesn't know why it is important to stick close to OEM torque specs - thermal changes stretch materials and if you have your screw too loose it may slowly unscrew itself and if too tight it may snap off. There are tolerances on everything so you don't have to be exactly 100% spot on torque specs but the closer the better of course :) TIS SOURCE: 4AZ Linksgewinde: Passschraube für Hydraulikkolben an Zahnwelle
M52TU / M54 / M56 M6 10 Nm *My personal offline TIS is in german but in this case you don't need a translation And at 28:04 you mention "nice and tight" as a torque spec :) if you don't mind me translating that sentence into a number then it would be 50Nm which is quite a lot TIS SOURCE: 3AZ Verschlussschraube an VANOS-Verstelleinheit M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US / M50 / VANOS M22 x 1,5 50 Nm PS: There used to be a few online TIS versions but BMW did a great job at shutting them down completely and there will problably never be another one. There was a lawsuit in Germany during 2020 that demanded access to all the torque specs and DIY related information for car owners that did not wanted to have to visit a mechanic to repair their own bought cars and BMW (and basically all car manufacturers) had to make it accessible. And they did but of course in a BMW sort of way. At BMW everything costs extra. One day you'll probably have to pay for a "welcome" greeting upon your entrance :) You can buy a one day pass, a monthly pass or a 365 days pass. None of those 3 are in the "I am a DIY person" price range so don't even bother to check it. If there ever will be an online TIS again it will most likely be down very soon.
So to be clear, you just started the car as usual, same as you would after an oil change. I am thinking that if you use some oil on assembly of the bearing and anti rattle spacer you should be fine.
Thank you I am trying to be doing this to my 03 e39 530i this weekend. My oil hose had a crack in it and crumbled when I tried to take it off. Vacuum lines were brittle and had to replace a few after crumbling. The disa valve needed a rebuild. Cleaned pretty good now just have to take off the fan clutch and go to town. Thank you again great channel
Also not noted in video is Bearings should be slightly lubed and you should always bolt the pistons back onto the cams and make sure they spin with little force If not use sandpaper to sand down the spacer between bearings and recheck. Spin each one counter clockwise. They should spin with very little force not spin it and it just keeps going like a fidget spinner then spacer is too thin which will cause rattling. After confirming this then put pistons back into the Vanos case and install on engine. By not doing this step it can cause performance issues and check engine light to come on.
Brother I have a 2000 328 and was debating on how to do this job and I’m happy I watched your video 👍👍 I decided to spend more for the rebuilt unit and it was a easy diy but pricy 🙃
Another awesome tutorial by the BMW master! Thank you, that is my next job and will surely play this video while doing it! Thanks mate, you’re a legend!👍🙌
Where do I find it... let me do that. Just changed the vanos unit. Tried to fill it with oil 🛢 and ended up spilling it on the belts and hoses. Cleaned that off with hot water and dishwasher detergent...
Let me add some things. Lubricate all parts with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Never put together dry! 2nd, I measured the thickness, (bushing) the replacements are .005” thinner. There was a lot of play in the old ones. Tightening up the stack a bit. Less rattle. Use small exact knife to cut seals on an angle, be careful, take your time. Rock the knife slowly. Oil outer seals and run under hot weather from the sink. Rotate 90 degrees while trying to put in grooves. This way stretching evenly. It will pop in place, more oil needed here. Damage is done on rebuilds in the 1st minutes of starting the vehicle. Always lube, takes a minute to get oil in the lines. Just sayin! Buy Beisan sys seal kit. Go slow!
Steps worked perfectly for me. Now how to reset adaptations? There are about 5 different ways online. PA Soft resets DME, but not sure I want to do that with a custom tune.
Great video and steps. You mentioned cleaning out the Solenoid(s). Mine are full of thick and dirty oil, which I'd like to remove. What's the best procedure? Thanks!
I am about to do this job, but seals only - there is no rattle, but my engine struggles at low revs and my fuel economy is way down. How does it compare to other jobs, as far as difficulty? I've done the CCV (the lazy way, but I did the valve cover gasket at the same time) and the oil filter housing gasket already...
Hi very nice and helpful video 👌 . I've trying to find where is the problem with my car . So , no errors in ECU car is lack of power seems like is struggling from low rpms . Was done : air filter , sprak plugs , disa valve, air mass , fuel filter , ccv . No difference at all. Any suggestion mate ? Thank you . M54B25 ENGINE
Oil on the rubber hoses is a bad thing, right? Which is why you make sure to tell people to take precaution to not get oil on them or clean them if they do. But what is a good way to clean oil from rubber hoses? Is there some sort of spray we should use? Just wiping it will still leave a film of oil and I imagine that's not good. Thanks!
Thanks for this vid bro. Anybody have any recommendations on how to loosen the clutch fan off the water pump? Mine seems to be welded on there, it doesn't want to spin off at all
If it's been a while it needs force. Better to have the special tools required thin spanner/pully holder. If it wont' budge (remember it's reverse thread) then you need to use brute force whack. Careful not to damage hoses etc
My tech question first: Doesn’t cranking the engine with ignition coils pulled off the spark plugs somehow damage or at least endanger the ECU or the coils due to „unused“ / un-grounded high voltage? Or did you mean to disconnect them from the engine wireing harness? But now the credits: Wow man, you are really making great how-tos! For all those who use them when repairing stuff themselves, a collection of the mounting torques applied would be great! Maybe within a list in the „description below“... Thanks a lot from Munich/Bavaria! Markus
@@mikutv1 That's if the coils are plugged in via the harness and not on the spark plug. If the coil is on the plug and not plugged in via the harness, no problem.
How do y’all feel about the eBay rings and anti rattle parts? I already have the solenoid and oil return lines etc replaced from fcp euro parts but the vanos rebuild kit comes with everything for like $1200 🥴 the rings and springs etc on eBay are less than 100
Hi I’m hoping you could shed some light on a issue I’m currently trying to figure out and I’m really hoping it’s not what I think it is that is giving the issue so here it goes i recently bought a 2005 X5 4.4i v8,the gut I bought from said it’s been sitting for 5-6yrs winter/summer here in the Illinois state. I started the vehicle let idle for Atleast 45mins or more and I noticed there’s a coolant leak from from the overflow tank I replaced the tank n I see that the temperature gauge on the dash is all the way in the red zone as if the vehicle is overheating but I’m not getting any heat in the inside and even the radiator fan is not on what do you think might possibly be the problem with it
Note from Beisan Systems: "If a bolt breaks, continue removal of vanos from engine. Once vanos is removed remaining bolt in splined shaft can be easily unthreaded (pick tool), left hand thread."
Great job wish we could have heard the actual vanos rattle before you started. Did the vanos seals on my m54 and ran like crap first start up then better and now its been 2000 miles and its better but now have vanos code 67 and 68 for inlet and exhaust cam postion end not reached. Did not have codes before and now after seals my mpg is 16-20 average and feels sluggish. Not the cam sensors those are brand new. Bit weird since nothing timing related was touched
At 8.26 you said there is plenty of room to take out the threads if the T bolt snap. Mine snapped today and there is no room! You have to drill it out. Now it’s got to get recovered to a garage. What a waste of time that was
Hi , I did rebuild the vano on my E39 .... while the vano unit was removed I used a spanner and turned the crank a few turns...to many maybe 🤔, and the right spindle gear came out🥺, I have managed to put it back .... should I be worried before refitting the vano unit? Thank you
Ya u cannot turn the engine when vanos is removed if u do u mess up the timing. There's no need to rotate the engine when removing and installing the vanos unit
I picked up a pair of vanos pistons at the junk yard and basically rebuilt them with the new o rings and anti rattle rings. Unfortunately it wasn’t as easy to break open as yours were, and I didn’t have the soft vise lining, so my pistons have a few scuds and mars. Nothing major. Looks more cosmetic then harmful. Do you think I would have any issues if I went ahead and installed the pistons? Can I maybe hit it with some fine sandpaper to smooth it out? Thanks for the vids
I have a oil leak (not from valve cover) dripping on the exhaust solenoid bottom radiator hose closet to the thermostat could this be the vanos gasket and or solenoid oring or position sensor(asking if could be any of them 3) or a possible other area to look
Could be the metal gasket, could also be the supply line. Easiest way to tell is to power wash the area, add dye, and then trace it with a black light.
Great vid, I've got the N42 engine, do you know if the vanos is the same unit as I'd like to give this a go, I'm having a very slight rattle on start up
Hi I’m having problems with my e46 325 msport saloon 2003 the problem is with my clutch so at first gear pulls like it should and then up gears it slips so I’m kind confused is it my clutch or something else ??
Greetings from Germany. Great DIY. I have a question: do you have to set the timing After rebuilding vanos? What about turning the Engine with compressed Air as it is written in bmw TIS. Do i really need this? Thanks
On an M54 you don't have to set the timing. You can leave the coilpacks disconnected and try and start it this will and should allow oil to build up in the vanos without starting it. Ich hoffe das hilft. Aber das hab ich genauso mit meiner 330ci gemacht, und es läuft perfekt;) Grüsse aus den USA ;)
I think BMW has paid people not to make those videos. I have searched high and low and can't find a single one. I got lucky and got a new vanos kit that came with them, so I searched for a video to fit them and this came up. I was glad when he talked about how he will get to cleaning the solenoids and I was happy thinking I could have a spare set lying around until next thing I see, the vanos unit is going back onto the engine block!
i always love ur videos!! you made it so easy for me to take off my manifold. i was so intimidated. i’m still learning with my 330i m54 , but i wanted to know what is this fix for? what does it do? i know i’m a noob @shoplifetv

Did you find the torque spec? Don’t really want to overtorque it with an impact.
Do you have to drain the whole engine of oil before you start this?
ASAP DART you've probably already did it but for anyone else wondering this, no, you do not.
I keep seeing something about the VANOS timing tool? Is it necessary to use it? I didn't see you use it?
No.
Why dont you have the metal gaskets between the piston cap?
What's your tak on the x8r kit from the UK?
14:45 is an impact required? Would a breaker bar work to loosen the bolt on the pistons?
Would be a whole lot easier to remove the bolt
Your vids are excellent mane, gracias.
are you gonna clean the solenoids in another video?
Yes I will make a video
@@ShopLifeTV and then he never did :(
I think BMW has paid people not to make those videos.
@@masonichisenga3032 there are videos that show how to clean solenoids, not necessarily bmw specific but it still applies
@@JrIza_914 thanks.
Hi, are you sure the brown ring goes on the top of the black one as it is smaller as the black one?
The black ring is squared brown is round put on brown then black on top
¡Gracias!
No problem!
Hi. Sorri. I have a BMW E46 Mator M54 dropping equal to the oil, but there is no smoke from the exhaust, tell me what to do?
Very well done video thanx very helpful.
Most Excellent.
Thanks man! Always nice seeing your comments
Excellent video.
Is BesianSystems a good place to order from? site looks suspect and when going to checkout goes straight to paypal.
How many miles were on this m54 when you did this? Just curious...thx
i always love ur videos!! you made it so easy for me to take off my manifold. i was so intimidated. i’m still learning with my 330i m54 , but i wanted to know what is this fix for? what does it do? i know i’m a noob @shoplifetv
🤔 when I am done, can I not fill the vanos with oil so as not to start it with air inside...
Собрал ты подшипник ,поставил ремкомплект но не проверил на люфт и вращения 🤷♂️ А вдруг нужно было шайбы шлифануть)
Where did you get the Teflon o rings from?
