The 2025 Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Is The Coolest Truck In America!

  • Today we’re in Palm Springs driving the newest truck in America! It’s called the Quartermaster, and it’s coming from an unexpected place: Hambach, France. Yep, that’s where the newest Ineos will be built, right alongside the boxy Grenadier SUV.
    As you’d expect, Ineos basically took a Grenadier, hacked off the cargo area, and stretched the frame 21.5 inches to accommodate the 61.5 inch long bed. (The wheelbase grows around 12 inches.) The result is something that’s… well, frankly fantastic. As long as you love boxy looks that is. Also: it looks like it’s ready to invade a small country if you get the available canvas cargo cover…
    Power comes from the same 3.0L BMW engine as the Grenadier and it makes the same 282 horsepower. Solid axles happen front and rear, and the same 2-speed transfer case as the Grenadier is here as well. That means full time 4WD, and a true center differential that can be in 4Lo while unlocked. Yes, open diffs all the way around in 4Lo. That means no binding in the driveline unless you need to lock the center which can easily be done when needed. The downside? Fuel economy. This is rated for 14 MPG combined according to the EPA.
    Now about that bed: It’s not 4-feet wide between the wheel wells, but you can put 4-foot wide things on top of the wheel arches if you need to because the rest of the bed is 63.7 inches wide. This puts this width above than the average midsize truck, but not quite in F-150 territory.
    Payload comes in at a solid 1,845 pounds and towing capacity is the highest in the mid-sized segment at 7,716 lbs. (It barely edged out its soulmate, the Jeep Gladiator.)
    Pricing? Well, it’s not cheap. This starts at $86,900… That’s less than I had expected, but it does make sense as trucks not made in N. America are subject to a steep 25% import tariff. (Don’t worry, Ineos is paying that, but it’s the main reason we never get the cool trucks from elsewhere in the world.) That also explains the rather exclusive $115,000 top end pricing, but until Mercedes makes is a G-Wagen truck, (Mercedes Kastenwagen? K-Wagen anyone?) this might be closest you can get…
    Before you ask, no, we’re not buying one 😂

    I blame US as enthusiasts. If I were building a truck for myself, I'd build it just like this - few frills, bulletproof, fixable, durable. And then I'd find out it cost $100k and gets 14mpg, and I'd wouldn't buy it! The other irony is like many fancy cars, this tank is built to last forever - but the poor man won't get to enjoy that as he can't afford something that lasts forever. And the guy that can afford it would never work on his own truck or keep it for 40 years. Oh cruel irony, you fickle mistress!

    Great review.
    I've owned my Grenadier for 5 months, driven all types of road surfaces, to include adventure travel.
    Everyone talks about the steering being vague and annoying. I don't find this the case. After a few months it feels natural on pavement, and even better off pavement.
    The audible speed warning clicking is very annoying. But after a software update from my dealer, I've went into the menu and deactivated it and have never had to deactivate it a second time. Initially I had to go thru the menu after every start.
    I would not buy either the wagon or pickup if I were not going to use the vehicle as it is intended. It's not close to the comfort level of my 2024 Land Rover Defender but overall I enjoy this truck very much

    Alex, Ineos likes to name their vehicles with military themes. For the USA they ought to have called this the 'Colonel' rather than the Quartermaster. With the "Finger Lickin' Good" 25% Chicken Tax added to the already high price, a reference to Colonel Sanders would have been appropriate. 😉 Now that the impregnable Chicken Tax barrier has been breached, it is time for Toyota to bring over the Land Cruiser 79 Pickup and the Hilux Workmate or bring back the T100 .🐓🐔

    • @damilolaakanni
      @damilolaakanni 8 дней назад +1

      I see Toyota bringing the Hilux to the US as they already sell it in Mexico. However, they might need to discontinue the Tacoma (their bestselling truck? That won't happen). The 79 series though...it won't pass US safety regulations in its current state. For them to bring that, they're going to extensively modify or completely redesign it and then price it just below the GX550 or Sequioa...too expensive for what should be a "basic" offroad SUV/pickup truck.

      Maybe a future version of the Hilux, but it would be prohibitively expensive to federalize the current model. I like the idea of the LC 70 series, but I think the ride and cost would find limited sales. Again, a 70 series would sell for over $100k if you had to federalize it and probably have a gas engine. They sell ~10-15k in the world right now.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 8 дней назад +1

      @@LukeChiao If Ineos can afford to start a car company from scratch, Toyota can afford to meet our standards. The 70 Series Land Cruisers are sold with the 4.0 V6 we had for years and the Hilux Workmate comes with the famous 2.7 engine we had for decades. The new T100 can be built on the TNGA-F platform. Hino could build it alongside the new Land Cruiser 1958 and send it over to us on the same ships.

    Here’s my problem with this: it doesn’t have anything the Gladiator doesn’t other than bigger payload and slightly bigger towing. Which I’ll grant you the payload in particular would be really nice, but there are just too many tradeoffs. From a limited dealer network, to boonies repairs, the weird dash that personally would drive me nuts, the speed warning, the mpgs (I drive modded Gladiator so it’s not like I care that much, but modded I get 14, this thing starts at 14 before mods and at some point it is so bad that it affects your trips), the spare location, small tires that are still unknown about 35s and bigger, no disconnecting swaybar, and that back seat- pretty much useless- might as well just offer a rear seat delete from the factory And then we get to price. Did you give the price of that one and I missed it? By time you equip it with the minimum stuff required to use it as advertised you are at almost $100K. I’ll stick with my Gladiator thanks.

      Jeep has nothing to worry about. The market for Ineos is very small. Only trucks they have to fear are the Tacoma, Colorado, and Frontier since they’re all extremely capable off-road and better values (in Toyotas case as they’re more now, indestructible basically).

      @@AceEverett And there’s no guarantee they will even scale considering how hard it is to start a car company and the amount of car companies that have gone bust lately. Even rivian might run out cash before R2 deliveries start. As for this car, the market for this car is so small. It’s basically for the guy who craves the feel of old school defender/G class and is willing to spend 80k+ on a new one over getting a retro defender/g class and that seems like a very small market. Plus way more money than a gladiator or its competitors like Colorado, Tacoma, and frontier. Not really anything Jeep has to worry about.
