Great video, I was at CES for 3 days and your video made me realize just how much I still didn't get to see! I was honestly blown away by the Crystal. In my opinion it was the best headset in terms of visuals at CES. I did a night flight on the flight sim demo and it was amazing. The night sky was actually black, and I could see moonlight being cast on the mountains by the moon and the shadows it cast. I could also see all the little details on the surface of the moon. I then had them turn the local dimming off and immediately wanted them to turn it back on, I was totally not expecting how much of a difference it made. I honestly cannot wait to buy one.
Imagine the flip controllers being combined with one of those wrist-mounted finger tracking things, so that if you're just sitting around in VRChat you can flip the controls out of the way and just have your hands, but then if you need to move being able to flip the controls back.
Surprise it took them this long to make that happen! But I suppose it makes sense for the wait. Itrequire technology to reach that point for the components to be small enough for it to be viable.

Looking back at a previous video about Meta going back into PCVR, what do you think the expectations would be from them? Better resolution, better refresh rate, more comfort, or tracking? What do you think?
I can take an educated guess at what he's hoping for. Take the existing Quest 2, strip it down to sensor package and display over 2 Type C connectors (one Displayport over Type-C for the display, one Data over Type-C for the sensors and controller I/O), and sell it for the same price, call it "Rift Lite". That way it has no compression going on. I know there is ~$100 in microcontrollers, cooling, batteries and etc in a Quest 2 that'd be removed in a "Rift Lite", but Meta needs to claw back their margins somewhere as they'd inevitably be losing out on a large chunk of software sales that otherwise subsidize the Quest 2's retail price. If they literally strip down a Quest 2 it's also save them some tooling cost, just a new midframe for the ports and controller board to handle the I/O.
@@KiraSlith What about tracking. I have extremely high doubts that they will make their own "Base Stations". Ever since the Quest Pro controllers that allow tracking behind your head with accuracy. They may do something like that again, or make you buy the Quest Pro controllers. Either way it'll be very interesting. And I agree with you, it indeed would save "Meta" or "Facebook" A lot of money.
@@arcticwolfyt9836 You're right, they'd definitely stick to the inside-out tracking and wands they're already using for the Quest 2, just dumbed down on the software side for a cheap ARM chip in the headset to handle. Affordable, accessible, convenient, these are the 3 elements that drive mainstream adoption, base stations are none of these.
The flip controllers just look sooooooo retro and I am all for it. Just the coiled wire and incredibly chunky build makes the thing look like a Super-Nintendo accessory more than anything.
Man, the wide FOV of the PiMax headsets is still next level compared to any other device. I would love to buy one but I just can't justify the price to myself. Also love the Wall-E look of the Somnium lol
I didnt even know this " CES " thing existed until someone brought it up in vr chat. im still kinda new to the vr world, so im not surprised i havent heard about it tbh. it seems cool.
Built-in dioptres sounds like a great feature ! It would allow to save 80€ on prescription lenses and also allows friends to try the headset with their own prescription. I hope that more headsets will support it in the future
i REALLY like the flipvrs, i know its still a prototype but i'd love them to keep the same look/aesthetic, it looks so cool and is a pretty awesome piece
Just to note, the crystal does not have an XR2 chip *for* standalone play, it has an XR2 chip for decompressing incoming information (the crystal needs the signal to be compressed for both tethered and wireless simply because of how ridiculously high res and high refresh rate it is), the standalone features are just there because you might as well add them in if you got a processor that can run standalone content.
So much good stuff! Can't wait for your review of the Crystal and Somnium VR1 when you can get your hands on em. Hopefully Pimax will send you a Crystal sooner rather than later in regards to their shipping timeline.
The HTC Vive XR Elite honestly is a headset I really want now, the size, weight, specs, all so much better then the quest pro and honestly feel worth the price, because it's so compact, I've been wanting that for years.
I want to get into vr, but I am afflicted with decision paralysis. Do I buy a headset now, or wait for something new? What headset do I buy? How does one “do a vr”?
My wonder for the flip controllers is if some sort of camera based finger tracking could be added to them. I would be genuinely super intrigued. I've grown too used to having fingers on my index.
5:39 this is a weird thing to point out, but that charger looks amazing. I always have difficulty deciding which cords go to what devices when I charge things and this makes more sense
The portal let you test the device on its entirety so that you give them proper feedback, testing in the VR field is extremely difficult and finding tester that can point out exactly what's wrong is just short of a miracle.
I actually commented on Pimax's Kickstarter asking about the left controller's thumb placement when in the VR controller sleeve. I asked if there was any way in software when toggling to the VR mode if the left controller's buttons could be "flipped" so you can turn the controller the other way around so it's thumb placement is more accessible. They said they were working on that function, if it does happen that would make using it waaay easier. I do believe they went into making the Portal a handheld or docked gaming console with just the VR aspect an added "bonus", so I myself can't rag on them too much when it comes to the VR side being less refined and whacky to begin with. I myself am more interested in the PC gaming function of it so to me at least, the VR would be more for media such as movies or playing older games with their software having a cool built in TV feature where you can play your console games on a virtual TV while having it in VR mode.
Been eyeing Shiftfall's stuff for a while, the Haritorax wireless sounds super great. I was gonna see how there new 1.1 version is but the wireless version definitely has me interested. Got a whiskas ad so I'm hyped up already
i REALLY like the flipvrs, i know its still a prototype but i'd love them to keep the same look/aesthetic, it looks so cool and is a pretty awesome piece
Great video! What an awesome CES for VR!
Thanks Skeeva!!! :):)
Been looking forward to this from you! Really appreciate what you do 💜
Thank for coverage as always ❤
So much good stuff! Can't wait for your review of the Crystal and Somnium VR1 when you can get your hands on em. Hopefully Pimax will send you a Crystal sooner rather than later in regards to their shipping timeline.
Don't get your hopes too high
VR is back baby!
yoooooo Thrill!!!!!🔥
The HTC Vive XR Elite honestly is a headset I really want now, the size, weight, specs, all so much better then the quest pro and honestly feel worth the price, because it's so compact, I've been wanting that for years.
i really appreciate the guy who was in full costume at the Vive booth
Great video as always m8
Even if there are a couple items in these showcases that dont quite work, its still cool to see companies trying new ideas.
My friend just got a quest 2 today and Im teaching him how to use it and I gotta say, it’s a lotta fun teaching him
Thanks for the info. Glad i got all these years out of my CV1, almost 5 years now. Valve Index is for sure the next one.
man i love this kind of technology!! imagine how many awsome things we will be able to make in the future i just CANT GET AROUND IT AGH
Thrill must be the best vr RUclipsr
Thank you for updating us
Lucids haptic gloves paired with flip VR seem like a dream combo. So excited!
I love watching your CES videos, very detailed and helps me stay updated! Keep up the great content!
The flip controllers are gonna be sick can't wait to get my hands on a pair
Should I save up for the crystal to use as a main headset or wait and see if there is anything better?
Not me instantly getting angry after he says Wednesday news day instead of Tuesday news day lmao
I think at this point there's been more Wednesday newsdays than Tuesday ones, should just rename it lol
Been eyeing Shiftfall's stuff for a while, the Haritorax wireless sounds super great. I was gonna see how there new 1.1 version is but the wireless version definitely has me interested. The somnuim is also a great potential headset, hopefully we'll get to know about it more soon! Thanks for the informative vid Thrill, this was super helpful. Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks for adding the shiftall stuff 💖
Full body tracking with B&SN on the quest 2 is approaching on the horizon! Awesome video!
