That guy has his extension way to full. Should have the tunnel out preventing it from rolling into the tires. And that much weight in the extension will make the side of your mat lay different than the middle. And the driver is fighting to keep it straight if one side is Fuller than the other. If you own a million dollar machine you should at least know how to use it properly. We use that same exact machine every day and I never have that much asphalt in the extension. Also he should have his extension foot on the ground making a nice tight seam edge. If you run it flush like that the seam will be loose and the first place to show wear after a year or so. I've been doing this for a long time

    • @danagrey3534

Not sure where this video is taken at, but I am an inspector for ODOT (Ohio Dept. of Transportation) and I can answer your guys questions of why chip and seal after milling and prior to paving. xllcorpse and kalei p are both somewhat correct. We are using a lot of this application in Ohio. Asphalt comes in two grades... MC and AC. which asphalt emulsion is now made from bottom of the barrel crude oil. The sludge so to speak. If you notice in other videos, when applying tack, it is more of a drizzled effect. Apply an chip and seal coat does a number of things. In this application they are using it as a leveling coat. The emulsion is a also considered a "micro sealer" and will get into the micro cracks a lot better. allcorpse is correct that stone (usually #8 or # 9 limestone) is then applied to keep it from picking up on the wheels of the dump trucks and to provide some rough bonding surface between the intermediate or top coat depending on the application. It is also much cheaper and does a better job than fabric. We used to use a lot of fabric back in the day, but noticed the cracks came right back within a year. So the cost factor is just not worth it. Secondly, we are now up to about 25% of using "RAP" (recycled asphalt particles) in our paving applications. The fabric does do well in milling and balls up in the mill drums. Not to mention its fabric and no good in recycling! The problem we have is that we still using 4-5% emulsion in our new mix and with 25% RAP and 75% virgin materials. The idea is that the RAP, once reheated will increase the emulsion to say 7% However, back 25 years ago, we were getting 10-12 years out of a top wear coat. Today, we are lucky to 5 while yet still striving for 10. I firmly believe that even with the use of RAP in our mix designs, 5% is just not enough! Yet stone and sand is far cheaper than asphalt emulsion.
Another thing we are doing is increasing sand content in our surface coats of what we call it "smooth seal". The idea is again like the chip and seal coats and is thought to compact tighter and not allow water to get down into voids later on. The pros are that it does provide a smoother wear surface and does help to keep the water out. The cons are that our current spec is 1 inch. If we increased that to an 1 1/2" layer course, I think we would see better results long term.
Something else to go along with all of this.... In Ohio we are using more and more chip and seal. Typical applications for county and township roads are #57 L (limestone, which for those who don't know the stone is roughly thumbnail size) or #67 L, which has more fines in it with it. On our interstate and state routes, we use #8 L (which is about pinky nail sized) or #9 L which is half of the size of 8's. This used mainly for motorcycles. Those who have and ride bikes don't like it due to the loose stone after the application and if you wreck and go down, its going to eat you up! However, again, we are micro sealing the cracks and it greatly increases traction. Currently we are applying a chip and seal coat roughly 1-2 years prior to resurfacing to prolong the life and to micro seal cracks. As far as plowing, many of the guys hate it as it does tend to cause snow to stick more rather than blow across tradition surface coats. It is also harder on our plow blade and eat them up quicker, but then again the state is also forced to buy cheaper crap as you the tax payer hate paying taxes! LOL On the positive side, I like it as after I plow and salt it and the traffic it working the road salt in the snow pack, there again, there is far better traction than our other routes that we don't use it on. So I think you are going to see a greater use of it in Ohio and other states. Also as I mentioned above with the "smooth seal", those routes we paved with it, are doing better maintenance wise but the surface is super smooth as the name suggests. I have noticed a lot more accidents on those route during rain. So it is up to our Powers That Be to decide along with data from traffic, wear and durability studies.
I know that is a long winded response but hope it helps others to give a better understanding!
