-6°F Snow Camping in a Truck Shell at 9,200’ Elevation - Will Our Diesel Heater Keep Us Warm?

- We have matched our coldest temperature we've ever recorded camping... until next weeks video! Only thing is this time we're camping in a truck shell instead of our lance truck camper. We're impressed with how the setup performed and hope you are too! Let us know in the comments, could you camp in this weather?

You guys are on an epic adventure and thanks for taking us along, for the good times and maybe a few bad…
Thanks for the support, we’re enjoying the journey!
Thanks for sharing your experience. ❤
Thanks for watching!
Hey - we also use a truck top for camping. Ideas: place a rubber seal at the hinge of the tailgate to keep cool air, dirt out of back area; install a tailgate gas strut to help lower the tailgate and a belt to lift it when in the truck. We started out with a raised bed with storage underneath but finally decided to lower the mattress for headroom by getting rid of the underneath storage; mounted a rack on the camper truck top with a Plano weather tight box to hold items on the rack; we use lots of pillows for wall insulation as that metal is also cold; use a hitch mounted cargo carrier for other stuff and as a step into the truck top.
Love the diesel heater idea.
All great ideas! We do have a tailgate seal, but the strut is a must! And the storage underneath is nice but I could see how beneficial the headroom is. Lots to consider!
Gotcha!
Love, love, love this video! You had me laughing over the bedtime (too early) canundrum! All the elements of a real 'day in the life' were here in the raw. Sharing snippets of your relationship, being honest about your camper's shortcomings, conquering the cold at night , enjoying the positive side of your experience makes this one of my favourite videos so far. Much respect! ✌️🇨🇦
Thanks for the kind words! I laughed out loud the first time I saw that clip when editing the video. Glad you did too!
Love this adventure. I think it’s great to get out of our comfort zones every so often. You learn so much that way. Safe travels!
Stop and grab yourself a piece of canvas the size of the back of your truck. The width and height from ceiling down to the bed floor. That way, when you're in there, you can put the canvas up and when you're outside cooking, it will keep the heat inside. It will also help with insulating the tailgate and window at night.
Good idea with the roll up canvas!
@LivingLargeCamping The thicker, the canvas, the better.
@@HighSpeedGolfCart wool army blankets work too, and if you attach Velcro to the blankets and or canvas it sticks to our carpeted shell
I can’t wait until the next proof of life video. How did Barkley do on his dental appointment? I love Colorado Springs. Never seen a sky so blue. Stay warm y’all! We’re pulling for you. Amazing couple. Give Barkley a scratch behind an ear for me.
Proof of life video, funny! Definitely will
Glad the heater worked! 😊
We sure are too!
The post about adding strut for opening tailgate, I 100% agree, unbelievably better use.
We’ll definitely be adding one in the future!
Just to give you a break enjoy a hotel room with a hot tub. You can enjoy both and be comfortable in the wind and cold.
We did one night since Barkley was recovering from his shots, we’ll share more in the next one!
So proud of you two! When younger (74&73 now) we did this in Bridgeport, California in a”tent.” Before Mr buddy, hand warmers etc. good sleeping bag was a winner and wife laughs to this day. 😂😂
Very fun and entertaining video 📹 😀 😄 👌 👍 👏.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You are right. Those heaters need a proper shutdown with oower on. The control board is mounted on the body of the heater's combustion chamber. If you just pull the plug, heat residual heat will likely kill the control board.
Definitely don’t want to do that!
"Crazy Colorado evening" lol Let's talk about crazy, there's this cute little couple . LOL
Haha good point!
I've not snow camped, but I do have all types of camping shelter, a 33' TT, 14' popup, two different tents, and a truck shell (but highrise) like yours. I've also simply camped, sleeping in truck ( no fun). Now at 65 I'm glad I did all of that when younger, now I mostly use my highwall PUP. Have fun and stay safe, I love your videos.
Definitely glad to be doing it while we’re young! Thanks for watching
Nice area,been to the Garden of the Gods,so beautiful,enjoy skiing,stay safe❤
Such a gorgeous area!
Great Video!! Enjoyed the scenery and the sunset so much, we watched it a couple of times. Wow..missed the Mountain Lion Warning sign the first time. Yikes! Your cooking situation looks amazing! Much better than a old cold sandwich. OMG...laughed out loud on the "sleeping in an aluminum spaceship" comment. Love your giggles and Barkley is so precious!
Thanks, Bree! And it was a silly night, definitely made us laugh when we were editing it back!
Just stumbled on your channel and it happened to be the Colorado Springs/GOG episode! My back yard! Been in the Springs for 20 years and love it! Good to see the diesel heater worked. I’m looking to get one for my van build I’m currently working on.
Definitely a beautiful area!
Nicely done with the chains.
Thanks! Made a huge difference!
I enjoy the truck camping videos. Keep em coming
More to come!
You guys are crazy 🤪 😂
Doing it while we’re young!
What kind of heater and heater mounting bracket are you using. Please include links.
Everything we used is under the winter camping category here!

For the people that dont understand, its an ADVENTURE! Alot of people test the limits. These type of people typically have a higher survival rate in adverse conditions when things go wrong. I also like to live dangerously haha Side note, run the diesel heater full power for about 5-10mins before shutting off. It can help clean the combustion chamber.
Couldn’t agree more! And good tip on the diesel heater, trying to keep it as clean as possible!
That’s not fun for anyone. It’s just silly
You guys are brave👌
It was worth the adventure!
You guys are brave. I could never do winter camping in a camper shell, lol.
Yeah, we're getting pretty used to it by now! We’ll be extremely thankful for the camper when we’re back
Have you thought of using a camper shell tent. Attaches right on the back and gives you a lot of room to change cloths and cook. Pretty good investment for around $350.
We’ve looked at those, would be nice in the summertime but putting away a tent in this cold would be painful!
You should suck 90% of the air to the heater from inside of the truck. To warm up that amount of cold air is crazy.
You guys are young and tough, That's a fun way to camp though, we do the same but not usually in the winter, we also have a full size truck and 27' travel trailer we use year round especially in winter, but the adventure rig is a tricked out gen 1 Tacoma with a Sport Hi liner canopy, rack, top storage and side awning, we Love it, really enjoy your adventures, Take Care!
We definitely love having the option of both setups, and I really think it’ll be great in the summertime! Quick trips and longer days in the truck shell will be perfect
Need a folding table to cook on so you can keep to tailgate and hatch closed.
Yes we do!
Not sure if you mentioned the temp in the truck box with the diesel heater running. Just thinking if the air intake was in the box it would be even warmer. Anyway loojs like fun. I have the dame sleep issue. I find it hard to sleep with heavy wind outside.
It was around 45 degrees with the heater that night, definitely better than -6!
Great video. Please share your kettle brand or add it to your Amazon link. Thanks!
I added it to our kitchen section, here’s the link! www.amazon.com/shop/livinglargecamping/list/35AS2TEZF0QCP?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_SEDXMV9F50VVPYE9B7BH
Still need a co detector in the shell even with the outside exhaust.
Good point, we’ll grab one!
What brand is the heater? I'm in Canada and sometimes it doesn't let me open the US links... Thanks!
I'm curious about pottying.... 😬 lol
I give you lots of props for your winter camping! Love following along! Marilyn C
Hi Guys,
You to work very good together.I enjoy your videos.
Goat
Thanks for watching!
wondering if you were thinking about using an anti-gel liquid to your generator fuel to keep the fuel from gelling up?
We did not this time, but picked some up for a different night when it hit -11! In a later video though
Does the portable diesel heater need power to run? If so, how much power did it use over night?
Yes it is powered, about 100w on startup and then maybe 30w while it’s running. It’s very efficient!
I feel cold just watching your video. Does the exhaust from the heater gets into the truck.?
The exhaust is piped outside and away from the cap
Nice video
Thanks!
Chains go on the front wheels.
Thanks for the tip
Why not pick up a light weight folding table? Then you can cook on it and keep the back of the truck closed and warm?
You guys are tough - I might have gone with PB&J made inside the cozy warm camper!!
Funny, we considered PB&Js one night!
FY..I enjoy your videos. I am retired from driving a charter bus for 25 years and drove semi truck for 20 years. I noticed you put your chains on the rear wheels and slipped a bit. Is your truck 4wd? If so, you should put chains on front wheels for better traction and handling of truck. And of course have it in 4wd. Otherwise, I always look forward to your next travel log. Safe travels.
I was curious which axle to chain up. I read the drive axle but yes it is 4x4. I’ll do the front next time! Thanks for the tip
Hi guys. I have missed a lot of videos. Why are you truck cap camping???????
Just for a few weeks in the winter, we’ll be back in the trailer at the end of the month. Didn’t want to risk driving a trailer through snow and ice!
I certainly hope it works all night. That would be awful if it doesn’t. Good luck!
We’re sure glad it did!
Not for me. Looked too claustrophobic. I know, temporary for this time of year. You guys are braver then me. Lol
Barkley , his booties are adorable! ❤
He sure loves the boots once he’s running around!
You should always top the heater before falling asleep
It uses about 1/2 a gallon over 12 hours, so I always make sure it’s full before climbing in the camper!
Amelia you're the shorter of you two, so have Conner drive your "car" and you ride passenger. Then, put the Goal Zero in your floorboard and use it as a footrest. While you're going down the road the heater will keep the Goal Zero warm so it works correctly when you need it. Best wishes to Barkley at the Vet!
IM BEEN USING QUIET GENERATOR. RANS ALRIGHT FOR 2.5GAL . HATE WHEN I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING. COMFORT IS MY MAIN THING.
You have any regrets?🤔 What if God forbid you had an emergency? Will always watch your videos.
No regrets so far! And same as if we had an emergency in the trailer, we’ll figure it out together!
Just a heads up, Cougars arent really known for dragging a kill up a tree.. thats mainly a leopard thing.. Its usually a bird that pulled it up there, or even one of Santa's failed JV reindeer.. lol
Just for clarification.. A deer dies, the coyotes or even cougars get most of it, a light leg bone with scraps of meat is found by a bird, it takes it up and pecks away.. or even a human could have put it up there.. lol, sorry for mansplaining..
Thanks for the explanation! Figured it had died elsewhere, just still a shock when we were packing up
I don't get it
🥶 to cold for me
It was definitely chilly!
Camp video Jim Ross ATL
I would make a big camp fire 🔥
We will soon!
Need to chain your front as well save you sliding into a bar ditch, speaking from experience at least one front wheel
Definitely don’t want that to happen!
I am noticing a trend among RUclipsrs I watch. A lot of you who have had comfy campers hv gone extreme for camper shells where everything is cramped and no bathroom /kitchen space etc. I am being serious when I ask why? We have a Lance truck camper that’s minimal but very convenient with all the comforts of home. I recall you did too, right? What you did was quite dangerous here in CO in my opinion. I’m happy it worked out. I’m confused as to why you and others made such drastic changes in your equipment.
We still have our trailer, but didn’t want to risk dragging it through snowy and icy roads to go skiing up in Montana. With this setup, we’re fast moving and minimal but its not a long term camper! We’ll be back in our trailer in March
Me: Minus 6 isn't that cold
Also Me: OH WAIT they're in Fahrenheit. That IS cold
Love watching your videos from my warm living room by the fire in Canada.
Well one of the next videos is -11F! Thanks for tuning in
Oh Dog 🐕
Your brand of heater is no longer available. FYI. Thanks for your chilling video!
My dogs wont wear the booties. Any tricks?
Barkley doesn’t like them, but once he gets in the snow and can run around he forgets they’re there. Definitely a two person job getting them on though!
I would have gone to Florida being you left Michigan to get away from cold . It doesn’t seem any fun at all and your entire vlog was about cold . Brr!
It's not for everyone, but we're finding beauty in the winter weather! We’re headed to the South Carolina in April though
Get a little buddy w a 20lb tank, for a 2nd heat source it will last 1 week on low w a usb fan for circulation
You could sit in the cab to eat.
We actually considered that!
Not my idea of fun. I hate the cold. Grew in Mi, now live So Cal!
Just a temporary adventure!
The taller the camper shell more the heat will rise.
Good point!
Okay, you kids are officially CRAZY!! I'm just not sure what y'all are trying to prove? But that is NOT worth it to me! I hope you can at least at some point very soon get a nice warm hotel with hot running water for showers! 😊Stay warm out there you two!
You need to upgrade your Temu brand power station to a real one. Also. Why is this fun again? Someone make it make sense why people PURPOSELY seek out snow and cold. That is so weird.
Have to wonder why you bought a trailer but are not using it.
We’ll be back in the trailer, but didn’t want to drag it through snow and ice for these few weeks
Who puts a bed at the tailgate? I guess you just like crawling over it to get out? 🤔
Easier than crawling over our battery and fridge!
WTF! Why aren't you using the trailer? Poor Barkey! He deserves a better life at his stage of life. I don't get it! Content?
We’re heading up to ski in Montana with Amelia’s brother, so just a quick trip in the truck shell!
I hope not but it might quit working
Thankfully its worked great!
I honestly have no idea why you think this was a good idea. We have owned motorhomes since 1979 and enjoy camping in all kinds of weather. But it is better to be able to enjoy the whole day.
It's called adventure. People who test the limits will also have a higher chance of survival when said conditions come up unexpected.
We’ll be back in the camper in a few weeks, but we’re enjoying this adventure for the time being!
Good for you guy's for giving this winter camping a try. You will be a lot more appreciative of your camper again & warm sunny weather. If you can survive this, you will come out a lot stronger for it 😅
You would be better off with a hot tent
We’ll try one sometime!
I am impressed with your tenacity. Obviously your love of nature and the out-of-doors drives you to do challenging and maybe even outrageous things, I am really enjoying your winter adventures. Stay safe and warm.
Why didn't you use your trailer
Cause we would have never been able to tow it down snow covered roads like this one!
Do you pee and poo in the woods?
you are consciousness sui generis & priceless
we enjoy & admire your inspiring & insightful videos
