    Larry was literally one of the first artists my dad introduced me to at a very young age (in diapers) and his music forever stays in my mind and ears! I distinctly remember as I got a little older, on our cleaning days, he’d put records on and we be dancing around the house cleaning, pretending we were performing at times, lol. Ughh such incredible memories 😩. Life was simpler back then and music like Larry’s gets me though, takes me back and brings me the biggest smile!! ❤🤗

Lyrical and melodic, always telling a story, not a wasted note, no gratuitous pyrotechnics, great feeling/phrasing, soulful touch, always with great tone, groove, classy swing, knows about understatement, but he can burn too - if he feels like it's appropriate. BTW, the rhythm section of keys, bass and drums is impeccable in its pocket, dynamics -always playing to the music, to the sound.

    Fantastic, but I'm not really sure about that organ solo in the middle 8 of Minute by Minute, and not really sure why Larry wouldn't have taken something there instead in what's really the big build of the song. I don't think I've seen that key player before on the later stuff?
    Having said that, the solo in Gracias was much nicer, so maybe he was just super reliant on the chart for the first one and was too short to find his way in.

  • @Jerry-hp5sf
    @Jerry-hp5sf 6 лет назад +51

    Take a lesson kids.
    It’s not the fastest players that rise to the top.
    It’s the ones with an amazing sound who play with sensitivity.
    Any fool can play fast, not any fool sounds great doing it.

    • @dennylibertario2246
      @dennylibertario2246 5 лет назад +4

      Ugh, I actually consider myself something other than a fool, and I still can't play "fast". I think it would be nice to play fast and have that in your arsenal of tricks, but we all aren't that gifted. Most of the shredders or fast guys hurt themselves because they have no taste in good music and arrangements....and most of the fast stuff is found in one dimensional rock music which wears thin, has simplistic structures, and little else to offer.....other than the speed. I haven't heard of Eddie Van Halen graduating to smooth jazz, jazz, classical, bossa nova or anything of substance in genres.

    • @dennylibertario2246
      @dennylibertario2246 5 лет назад +7

      The other point to make is that Larry C. at one time in his career was super fast and had that quality on display. If you don't believe me, pick up a copy of Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne and admire Larry's solos....they were incredible and fast.

    • @jefft022
      @jefft022 5 лет назад +4

      @@dennylibertario2246 I think the point is that great musicians eventually realize that there is more to playing than just technique. The "great ones" have all the tools in the bag, but know when and where to use them...I call it "soul".

    • @johnmaer
      @johnmaer 5 лет назад +2

      @@jefft022 I don't disagree. Many examples of what you describe...some greats don't fit that mold however....say Clapton for instance....the guy has been a real guitar enigma. I am a Larry's fan since my chilhood at the end of the 70 's .I have seen Larry performing in Vienne two times. Larry never seems very comfortable to play at Vienne (just my feeling) . Why If so ? : I think maybe I know the reason : The first time Larry came in Vienne in the late 80's french people were not really ready to listen his music (splitted between classic Jazz and more popular "not so Jazzy " music expectations.) Many french people were just not "ready" to understand his unique way to play in this antique theater. Now things have changed and thanks to internet and the browsing facilties and easy links ... Larry is today known as a "one of a kind" guitarist.

    Larry has a way of sewing things together that seems simple on the surface, but gets pretty complex when you really dig into it. He truly took the torch from B.B. King and brought it into the realm of more popish blues/jazz. You may love it and you may hate it, but Larry Carlton is as important to that style of music as Yanni was to New Age and Miles Davis was to Cool Jazz.

      He's definitely got something special! A perfect foundation for Larry's playing! With real personality & a hint of swing (on the 1st song at least).
      Which is why he's the drummer for such a big name.

    Excelente vídeo. Gracias por hacerlo público. En mi opinión, Larry Carlton es un guitarrista que ha llegado a una madurez muy interesante, en la que sabe explotar el conocimiento armónico de una forma especial para conectarlo con un manejo magistral de las melodías. Larry es, sin duda, uno de mis 5 guitarristas favoritos. Y en este vídeo en particular, los integrantes de la banda se compaginan deliciosamente.

    Smooth jazz served up with a bluesy feel, and you hear just a wee bit of a country twang on some songs when certain guitar licks are hit. Larry Carlton is one of a kind ; his music is standing the test of time (still moves you)!

    Anyone catch how Larry channels a little of the old Steely Dan Peg, Aja track....he vamps near the end those classic piano chords played by Donald and creates his own twist on the chord pattern, but definitely a tribute instrumental.....just awesome.

    Beautiful amphitheater.Where? Larry "found the lord" after some kid shot him in the neck at his front door 25 or so years ago..Since then his approach has become more mellow and, as stated, more sedated.When he first arrived his stated goal was to be the fastest gun alive.Listen to his first LP from 1978 and "Strikes Twice" from 1980.Lightning in a bottle!! 1993 he did "Southern Gentleman with harpist Terry McMillan which was bluesy and southern rock-like. One of the all time greats.Getting old ,of course.
    Larry also appeared on several Steely Dan songs.."Kid Charlemagne" is sterling.

      @@bill1260 Larry went into his his Studio, Room 335 in LA one night, and inadvertently walked into a robber who had broken into the place. The guy immediately shot Larry, hitting him in the neck. It's a freaking miracle Larry didn't die or even sustain any permanent damage. This was back in 1987 I believe. Larry has since moved to and settled in Memphis, TN.
