      Hi,
I've been really enjoying your show so far. Natasha, if you're into forests you have to check out the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald) which is located in the south-east of Germany. I grew up there and it's not until you move away that you realize how much you miss the forest. A large part of the area consists of a national park (not sure, but I think it's the oldest one in Germany).
At the southern edge of the forest you can find the town of Passau which is just gorgeous and definitely worth a closer look. Maybe you can do an episode on one or both, that'd be great.
      cheers

Greetings to the USA from a "Hamburger"! Except the Hamburger (we left it to the Americans) we have a further speciality here in Hamburg: "Labskaus". That is a mixture of everything the cook on a ship could find in his kitchen: potatos, onions, beetroot, corned beef, mixed pickles and herring with a fried egg on top. It sounds weird, looks like a run-over cat and tastes SO GOOD! I love it on toast. ❤

if you want to see some FKK footage, there is enough current and ancient footage onm the internet ;) There are even documentaries about the german nudist movement.
In the city where I live there is a WWII bomb found almost every two weeks.
There are gas stations like every 50km on the autobahn. So running out of fuel is definitely considered your fault. And when you have an emergency stop on that dangerous road, because of no gas, you pay for it to create a possibly dangerous situation.
You will not get punished for an attempt to break out of
prison, but all the crimes you do while escaping are punishable. So if you manage to break out wothout breaking anything ot hurting anybody you will not get punished for it. Being free is considered a basic human instinct and therefore you will not be punished for trying to be free. Of course they will try to catch you and put you back into prison.

The hyper inflation after ww one in Germany caused between half a mill and eight hundred thousand deaths from starvation. It was the root cause of ww two allowing a certain populist to manipulate the population, much as so many populist leaders are attempting to across the world in the present day which is why things are so terrifying in politics today.

Prisoners in Germany are still hunted by the Police, and if they are caught, they go back to prison to serve the rest of their sentences. Not punishable means only, that they do not get aditional charges for the escape itself. But if they damage property, hurt people, steal or commit any other crime in the process, they are charged with these.

27:10 They have not changed anything noteable. Actually there is a German decree called "Reinheitsgebot" (purity commandment) which clearly dictates which ingredients are allowed to be used to make beer. Those being water, barley, hops and eventually yeast. That's it. Anything more is not called beer anymore, but rather a beer mixture.

Fun Fact that I learned recently. Grape-flavoured everything is mostly a thing in the US, because currants have been banned there for a long period of time (1911 to 1966) due to a plant disease that threatened the American white pine. Therefore currant-flavouring was replaced by grape-flavouring. In Germany, currant-flavouring is much more present than grape (probably because we prefer to make wine out of grapes) 😄

    80) Missing the fun fact that the blue color of the seats in the Bundestag is copyrighted. You are not allowed to use the same shade of blue at any other place.
    83) The hare was a symbol of fertility as were the eggs, and some jerk put both together. Additionally eating eggs during the Lent before Easter was not allowed to Catholics, and so they had to boil any eggs laid prematurely by hens before Easter (and which could not be hidden in egg noodles or similar) to make them lasting till then.
84 ) Actually the christmas tree tradition originated in the Alsace which is rather "on-and-off" German, as well as the idea to replace some of the apples hung in the tree to be eaten by the children with glass bubbles. It was then spread through the Baltics, which were at that time heavily influenced by German traders and Teutonic knights from Prussia.
    89) The Spreuerhofstrasse in Reutlingen is an alley which is only 50 meters long. At its northern end it furcates around three houses attached to another, and it is the smaller of this forks which is only between 31 and 50 centimeters wide. It was built in 1727 during reconstruction efforts after a massive citywide fire and registered as city track No. 77.
    90) Not to forget the village Killer in the Killer valley. But the German verb "wanken" means rather "to sway" and is related to "winken" - to wave.
    94) Actually there are different systems in place in Germany. The most logical is imho that in the Southwest: 8:15 is a quarter (of) nine, 8:30 is half (of) nine, 8:45 is three quarters (of) nine. You should always look forward, not backward.
    99) That copyright dispute is solved now.
    100) Sorry for his efforts, but that word is only a joke. It was made up and did never really exist, because the thing it describes never existed. The model for it was presumably the (Austrian) Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän, a ship captain within the Erste Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (DDSG, First Danube Steamboat Company, existing 1829 to 1991 in Austria).
The actually longest word was Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (try it again with this!) and was the official "short form" title for the "Gesetz zur Übertragung der Aufgaben für die Überwachung der Rinderkennzeichnung und Rindfleischetikettierung" (Cattle marking and beef labeling supervision duties delegation law) in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from 1999 to 2013. (As the law was proposed in state parliament, the members reacted with loud laughter.) Another 'short form' law title was Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung (long title: Verordnung zur Übertragung der Zuständigkeiten des Oberfinanzpräsidenten der Oberfinanzdirektion Berlin nach § 8 Satz 2 der Grundstücksverkehrsordnung auf das Bundesamt zur Regelung offener Vermögensfragen, GrundVZÜV), roughly Regulation on the delegation of authority concerning land conveyance permissions), a decree (=Verordnung) established 2003 and repealed 2007. Only 'short' law titles do become occasionally so long in German - I suppose there is some secret competition in law-makers offices regarding long short titles for very minor regulations.

    • @HenryLoenwind
      @HenryLoenwind 2 месяца назад

Re 100: To clarify, that word exists, but the whole "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän..." group of words are the result of a word game. You start with "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän" and then add on more words until it gets ridiculous. One could play the same game in English by adding more words in the front with "of" or "for". For example: Polishing wax for the wardrobe for the hat of the captain of the Danube steamship company. Storage cupboard for the polishing wax for the wardrobe for the hat of the captain of the Danube steamship company. Manufacturing company for the storage cupboard for the polishing wax for the wardrobe for the hat of the captain of the Danube steamship company... Naturally, this is more fun with the German way of compounding nouns.
Re 94: At 3'15, the first 3 hours and a quarter of the fourth hour have passed. So it's a quarter (of) four.

(I haven't heard of mobiles in cones either, but then I haven't been to an Einschulung in a few years, where they had cones. Seems a little like a regioanl thing as well.)

There are gas stations at every exit of the Auotbahn and you usually have a lot of exits so it shouldn‘t be a problem to look at your gas tank and drive to a gas station.

was sucks is that almost no German is able to do a proper video about innovations of Germany. One forgets the bike, the next the computer, the next the car or the printing press, then the first magazin (one has to keep in mind that in difference to China, Germany/Holy Roman Empire had not just invented a printing press but you had in general also a fitting culture with many other things around which were innovated, for instance 'modern paper' (which is much cheaper than the old methods the rest of the world used (animal skin, papyrus etc.) outside of Germany/Europe), some forget the jet engine/rocket, the next forgets the helicopter, x-rays and so on. Quite similar to the 'Dichter und Denker'. If people dont mention people like Euler, Leibnitz, Planck, Robert Koch, Escher, Schroedinger, Copernicus (if one takes the perspektive of the Holy Roman Empire/German culture in general) and so on then its obvious that they have not much knowledge. Beer btw became also famous not just due to the taste but mainly due to having the most modern brewery technology (which means: chemistry) back then to sort out rather bitter/toxic stuff and so on. The 'Reinheitsgebot' back then was also due to the many 'self made' or 'questionable beer products' which were inferior (again: most parts of the world had no good beer - literally not, because of bad methods/no modern technology). etc.

So "Ich bin ein Berliner" can also mean "I'm a jelly donut" in a joking context.

The Bavarian Purity Law, known as the “Reinheitsgebot” in German, is a historic regulation concerning the production of beer in Germany. It was first enacted in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria. The law states that only three ingredients can be used in the brewing of beer: water, barley, and hops1. The original text did not mention yeast, as a full understanding of its role in fermentation came later1.
The purpose of this law was to ensure the quality of beer, prevent price competition with bakers for wheat and rye, and to conserve cereals for bread. Over time, it became a standard not just in Bavaria but throughout Germany, and it has influenced beer production and regulation around the world2.
Today, the Reinheitsgebot is often cited as a mark of quality for German beers, and while modern regulations have evolved, the spirit of the law remains a symbol of brewing excellence. Don’t think they changed it

Early 2024 the estimated population reached just over 84 million. However this increase was made up mostly by immigration as Germany's birthrate is currently under subsistence levels, ie less than two children born per statistical couple. Meaning without immigration Germany's population would be shrinking, not growing.
In addition due to the so-called "Generationsvertrag" , the "generational contract", which is an unwritten agreement among the general population, that the current working population covers the welfare and healthcare costs of the older and non-working population, we desperately NEED immigrants, preferably young and willing to work. Each working and tax-paying individual covers both their own current welfare and healthcare fees, plus a tiny fraction for the rest of the population. Or usually from the young to the old. But as the population of Germany is growing fairly old on the mean (more than 40% is older than 48 years old) that means the relatively small number of young people have to work harder to carry the burden of more older people.
Edit 1: the Mark was the currency unit since the foundation of the German Empire in 1871, similar to the dollar being the base currency unit in the States. BTW: the name "dollar" was derived from the German word Taler, which was an even older Germanic currency unit.
The original Deutsche Goldmark was originally a very high value coin. My great-grandfather back in 1898 bought his house for 1300 Goldmark. Mind you, not a huge house, but still a house large enough for the parents, the four grandparents, and the five kids. Again, obviously back then kids shared rooms, as did parents, and the grandparent couples each. So that was the original value. Then, after WW1 in 1923 came the hyperinflation when you'd better used your daily wheelbarrow load of cash on the same day, preferably within the next few hours, because by the next morning what could have bought you a few loaves of bread and maybe ten eggs, plus a half pound of butter could potentially buy you only a single egg. That's how bad the hyperinflation was.
My grandfather told me the story of how he was mugged one day as a young man, carrying home the suitcase stuffed full of bills with hundreds of billions of Reichsmark (the devalued Goldmark had been renamed). The mugger knocked him down and ran off with the suitcase. When my grandfather recovered and followed him, he turned around a corner, finding the blowing wads of bills on the ground but no suitcase. The suitcase had been too heavy to carry, and worth far more than the wads of bills inside, so the mugger got rid of the heavy contents (the bills) and ran off with the suitcase.
Edit 2: the "Hoff" wasn't as 'beloved' by Germans as is always claimed. He just got a typical pop hit because he luckily got his song "I've been looking for freedom" in juuuust at the fall of the wall. Which obviously resonated with a lot of Germans back then. However the fall of the wall might have been surprisingly quick, it still wasn't something that somewhat smart people couldn't see coming. So his songwriters began preparing the song in mid 1989, and launched it a few days before the wall. As such it became the unofficial 'freeedom hymn' of the time. But that was at best a short-term success. After those short 15 minutes of glory the Hoff vanished back into obscurity pretty much.
Edit 3: yepp, technically it IS illegal to run out gas on the Autobahn. However only if this happens due to negligence. As there are gas stations on average less than every 25 kilometers/less than 12 miles, plus there are usually on/off ramps with close by villages or towns with gas stations even closer apart, claiming you couldn't find a gas station usually doesn't count. However if you get stuck in stop-and-go traffic and couldn't reach the next gas stations cops won't bat an eye and will usually even assist you if they have the fuel available, waiving any fines and/or tickets. The problem with running out of gas on the Autobahn is that other vehicles may be allowed to drive at an unlimited speed. If you suddenly run out and your car looses hydraulic pressure in breaking systems it may suddenly become a lot (LOT) more difficult to control or even come to a safe stop. Something that could result in a potentially fatal accident. So, nope, don't run out of gas on the Autobahn (out of negligence). 😊
Edit 4: the fake bus stops outside retirement homes and/or geriatric clinics sometimes goes even further. Instead of being completely fake they may even include real Moia buses here in Hamburg. These mini-buses actually drive to several safe locations and register where each of their passengers got on and off. Giving the Alzheimer's patients at least the feeling of doing something on their own, having social interaction on the bus and the bus drivers. Then when it's time for their food or medication they are gathered back up, and brought back home. When I heard that the first time it blew my mind. Instead of fixating them to beds this allows them at least the impression of autonomy, which is a much more humane treatment in my book.

as with many inventions, some german invented it, but some others then made it "mass producible" to be cheaper and available to everybody. that first "german walkman" wasn't called walkman and was no big success, but after patents ran out, japanese versions caught on and they had the trademarked name "walkman". and the successor to the walkman (storing music digitally, eg ipod) could only store enough music with the help of another german invention: MP3. similar also for cars where ford just combined cars and assembly belts for mass production. and many people had invented several versions of lightbulbs and improved on them for more than a century until someone else invented the vacuum pump and edison marketed the combination of those inventions (vacuum lightbulbs).

I want to comment four topics of the video you've seen. Three are funny stuff, one is a serious topic. It's not about your reactions, just the topic.
    Inflation (hard stuff) 🚧
The hyperinflation mentioned in the video in Germany was something very special, because within a very short time, everyone who wasn't very rich and owned factories or the like lost everything and couldn't even buy elementary food. If you are interested in details, an analysis of the song "Deutschland" from the band "Rammstein" can offer you a lot of insights regarding the hyperinflation within almost 3 minutes (8:32 - 11:12, ruclips.net/video/sc-euVL8xQs/видео.html#t=08m32s). If you look further there might be shocking images from the band's video. The whole song is about Germany with it's (oftenly "unpleasent" - not to say violent) history and the feelings of the band about their home country. In my opinion it's a good song and video, but it's definitely not nice or pleasent. While the music video of the band only shows a caleidoscope of scenes from 2000 years of German history to their lyrics, the above mentioned analysis can give you a lot of insights into German's turbulent history, if you like (and can stand disturbing pictures from the music video).
    Hasselhoff (funny stuff)
I've oftenly heard that Germans love Hasselhoff but from my point of view it's just a running gag. He was known while the Baywatch and Nightrider series were in TV and he had a hit with "Looking for freedom" in the year the reunion of Germany took place. (One hit wonder.) That's all.
    Beer formula (funny stuff)
I don't know whether the formula has been changed since 1040, but at least it has not been changed since April, 23th, 1516 when the Purity Law for beer was established. The Purity Law stipulates that only water, malt, hops and yeast may be used to make beer. It stands for the preservation of a traditional craft technique and is also considered the oldest food law regulation in the world that is still valid today.
    Dinner for One (funny stuff)
This is indeed a German tradition since the 60th. Even though it might begin to fade away now. If you want to take a look at the short comedy, here is a link within RUclips: ruclips.net/video/5n7VI0rC8ZA/видео.html
I like watching your videos about Germany as it gives me perspectives "from the outside". 👍

The funny or a bit annoying fact of the original video is that he blames Americans for the wrong pronounciation of Adidas and he himself pronounces every german city and almost every german word wrong here. Your reaction is cool and it is fun to watch the world learning about the country I grew up and live in. Most of these facts are so normal to me that I'm excited because others are excited about things....does it makes sense, I think you get the idea of what I was trying to say. :)

Yes, David Hasselhoff is very popular in Germany. When Germany got reunited he was singing his song "Looking for Freedom" and got into the Germans hearts.
The naked thing in Germany is called FKK (FreiKörperKultur - FreeBodyCulture) and just normal, especically for people from East Germany.
Would love to get the grape Fanta!!! We only can get the regular ones and sometimes the special editions.
That's right. Anyone who breaks out of a prison or institution on their own is not directly punishable. There are therefore no criminal penalties after being caught again.
About the beer, we have the "Reinheitsgebot" and the law stipulates that only water, malt, hops, and yeast may be used to brew beer in accordance with the Purity Law.
Yes, you can get beer at McDonald's in Germany 👍
No.100; yes, that is a German word. We love compound words.

Escaping from prison itself is not punishable by law in Germany, but obviously if they catch an escaped prisoner they don't get to stay out. They just don't get an additional sentence for the attempt to escape.

25:32 well, most courses are in German, so, it really helps to be fluent in the language in order to be *admitted*, but as far as I recall, German language proficiency does not factor into the fees you have to pay (no tuition fees, but membership in the student union / Studierendenschaft, and the Studentenwerk, some minor admin fees and MAYBE the student ticket - if the Studierendenschaft hasn’t adopted a version of the nationwide 49 Euro subscription ticket model)

What do you have against David Hasselhof? He's a nice guy, has made a few very popular series and was very successful in Germany with a song and still has a considerable fanbase in Germany and Austria. Okay, he's not a great actor and singer, but that's what makes him likeable.

OK, there have been a few people with a questionable taste in music who were fans of David Hasselhoff.
But seriously, I've heard about him only a few years after 1990 and never understood why and how he was related to events around 1989/1990.
I'm starting to suspect that there're some people out there who try vigorously to establish a strange rumor about Germans.
