I completely agree. That's exactly how I hunt, an the bucks definitely do what you just said during the rut. I learned the same way.

Totally get the logic. Will definitely give it a try next season.

Thanks for sharing those tips, that makes perfect sense. Hopefully he made it through and you can get on him again in the fall

Staying close to the does is the way to go during the rut. This year on SGL I noticed does were passing through a curtain area most of the time during the season. Nov 10, I'm moving up to that area which has a clear cut and around 11:00 I spooked a nice 8 pt with two does. This past weekend I went back to see why does are moving though that area. There is food and water in that area plus the beds. May have found a buck bed, possibly himself used that's less than 200 yards from where I saw him, def had a rub in the bed.

@@HardwayOutdoors How far from where you saw that buck did find the sheds?

    • @HardwayOutdoors
      @HardwayOutdoors  3 года назад

Robert Deis from that bed to the sheds was about a half mile. But that buck has a completely shifted his summer/ fall/ and winter range from the last season. The only time he came back to my knowledge was the rut this year for about a week then he was gone.

Hunting in Northern PA your ideas and methods make total sense to me. I too am after a buck I call "Big8". And he tends to stay way back in as opposed to out running does. He is by far older and bigger than any other bucks and almost passive to other bucks. I see him passing my mock scrapes but he never hits them. He is the only 1that does this. good luck to you, like how you guys think and hunt!

I saw something like this a couple years ago...I saw the buck come in and bed 75yds away...he layer there for a long time until a few does came in and then he was on them...reminded me of a cop shooting radar

Good logic, if you have a consistent doe travel pattern and the right set up I think your thoughts make perfect sense.

I have learned over the past three to four years to hunt doe and doe bedding areas during the rut and I have seen a lot more bucks and mature bucks using that tactic. It's so much fun learning about those mature bucks and how good they are at survival! Great video as always Dan!

In my opinion hunting Pennsylvania mountain bucks are some of the toughest hunting you can do but so worth it killing a mountain buck no matter the size is a trophy in itself

That's def a large part of my rut hunting... Hunting the doe beds and travel routes. I only hunt public here in southern indiana. By the looks of it our terrain here is similar to yours. Mountainous hill country, but scaled down a bit. Minus the snow lol. Those bucks often bed and hang out up high like that. Especially in the morning when the thermals pull scent uphill to them.

It looks like to me the hardest part of hunting that spot would be sneaking in and out without being detected and blowing your cover. There is a reason that deer is old, but even the wise old bucks will throw caution to the wind during the rut. What you describe sounds like the best chance you have of seeing and getting him. My concern is how do you get in and out without burning out this spot? I would recommend, don't return until the peak of the rut next year on a day you can sit all day and don't worry about getting him on camera.

Deer like that become like invisible ghosts most of the year except during the rut.I say don't bother with camera because if it is not the rut he won't be there but you can count on him returning to try to breed does. He will probably die of old age but you have a good chance of getting him with your plan. Good Luck.

Thanks for watching! I follow Dan infant and those guys a little bit but I try to learn on my own as much as possible. Everyone can tell you bits and pieces of hunting that is useful but only you know how to hunt the deer you’re targeting.

You should rename that deer "Old Mossyhorns" :)
Also, quick question... what kind of trail cameras do you use and how do you like them?
Really liked this video too, by the way. It's amazing how much you learn just being out in the woods!

Doug Roberts thanks Doug! I use Tasco trailcameras. Very cheap. I like to have more cameras out then spending a lot of money on a few cameras. The picture quality lacks but all I need is a time stamp and tell if it’s a good buck, and they are good at that.
