- This time I try some new techniques in Mini Motorways to try and get high scores. First I try using strategically placed roads to block buildings from spawning, then I go all out with UNLIMITED TRAFFIC LIGHTS in Mini Motorways and place them at every junction. From the makers of Mini Metro comes Mini Motorways! A highway engineering puzzle game and in this video I, a highway designer of 10 years, see if my real life engineering skills help me become better at the Mini Motorways puzzle game by segregating different colours to fix bad traffic!
As always, if you enjoy the video please give it a LIKE and subscribe to the Real Civil Engineer channel and enable notifications so you can be the first to know when I post future videos! Thanks!!

RCE: Is a real traffic engineer
Also RCE: Makes a gridlock paradise by putting a traffic light on every single square in a densely trafficked area
Actually not a problem if you have the ability to synchronize multiple lights. Get all the east-wests flowing for a while, then the north-souths. But yeah, no sync and spaghetti roads, no.
@@josephcote6120 there is a way to sync by placing them in frozen time, no?
@@josephcote6120 You'd also have to sync the drivers the moment one person takes off late it causes a chain reaction ending in gridlock
Because journeys are determined by the pulls from shops, you can basically guarantee that with true perpendicular traffic flows, the traffic lights will eventually synchronize.
And if they synchronize and there's also leading capacity, one late or early person wouldn't bung it up anyways.
Yea as everyones commenting, traffic lights are actually good if you use them right, such as syncing them by placing them all in pause, but if theyre unsynced you end up with bigger jams

The traffic lights are not bad if you use the properly! Such as by the entrance of a building if you've had to put in a junction there, but only in the later game.
@@willowtree6487 Indeed; but seen my comment, i wonder?
@@willowtree6487 Ok, but seen my comment?
The reason why it skipped doling out tiles on Moscow at the end of your run was because you were holding down the 'Delete Tiles' button.
If you hold down either the 'Build' or 'Delete' functions through Sunday to Monday, then the game won't stop and give you your tiles.
It will, however, give them to you after you've released them for at least a second; so you can technically postpone your weekly allowance if you want.
The game doesn't give you tiles wihle:
1. You've just placed a road (5 second buffer)
2. you're holding down the delete button
3. You just pressed the toggle button
It's so the game doesn't interrupt you when you're finessing some ideas
Yeah and if you don't get offered road tiles just click the clock twice, it'll realise that it needs to give you stuff
If this does not look like a game bug I do not know what does.
@@Rextuz I had that a few times and it offered me the tiles a few seconds later. Just wait a few secs.

PowerWash Simulator: Am i a joke to you?
This is a weird episode to comment that
If you didn't use them sarcastically, you might notice that traffic lights are better in the game than in real life, and roundabouts are worse than in reality. If a car gets a green light, then it can turn left through a solid line of oncoming traffic ignoring collision. If traffic is bad enough on a roundabout, then cars will stop in the circle to let others in, which should never happen. As far as the game's questionable physics is concerned, traffic lights are helpful because they decrease the stop sign effect of 4-way intersections as long as they aren't placed back to back everywhere.
Came here to write exactly this
There is also the right turn efficiency of traffic lights. Which speeds up the entire interception if cars dont turn left. Specially useful for T junctions
Even though in theory the in-game traffic lights are better than IRL and the roundabouts are worse, in practice the traffic lights just don't do enough in terms of increasing the throughput of traffic compared to the roundabouts. A traffic light (if used correctly) can make things a little smoother in a suburb so people can get in and out of their houses a little more efficiently, but it's never going to be a real difference maker. Not saying you should never pick them (almost always more useful than a 4th bridge), but you should almost never pick a traffic light over a roundabout.
weird how the roundabouts' and traffic lights' spots in the meta have swapped
@@Spookyhoobster lol. I would much rather have traffic lights than a roundabout. They are great for intersections of two separate colours to prevent blocks

@@Celene1312 also just maybe removing a couple traffic lights, not necessarily even needing a roundabout
@@Celene1312 actually not. roundabouts would just get locked the same way. His mistake (or rather what the game made him do) was to let too many paths crossed at the middle and so things got clogged up.

@@RealCivilEngineerGaming That being said, I think the devs do have a measure implemented to prevent this sort of cheese- I might be wrong, but I think that the demand as the game progresses is divided amongst the existing businesses, so I think if you don't allow enough to spawn, you can never meet the demand required to keep the game running.
@@gloryholetoanotherdimension Just look at top 1 runs, this strat works fine for hundred thousand plus points. edit: ofc you can't fully cheese it out, you gotta have a strat to use this strat... Stratception!!
@@gloryholetoanotherdimension demand is based on the size of the map, so if you force the zoom out by overcheesing for too long, you can end up with more demand than you have population to fill it.
The cheesing strat can work if you deliberately allow some areas to spawn.
as much as this is fun to watch...i kinda enjoy it more watching you play it legitimately....that just could be me but thats what i feel
Yeah, seeing him make efficient roads with random spawns is much more fun than seeing him constanly manage spawns.
Absolutely agree
I think the game needs two modes. One with whatever spawn system there is now, and one that follows stricter rules and sort of spawns a little more realistically to let nerds build actual satisfying networksn
@@BD-yl5mh I think there just needs to be a sequel with more expanded features. I imagine it would be pretty hard to actually balance "truly random" spawns that could overwrite roads.
tbh, this is still a legitimate way of playing the game. Controlling spawns has been in the game almost from the very beginning and is still in the game. There is nothing cheaty about it but to each their own.
Placing traffic lights at every intersection: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should."
"I swear I did try to be sensible"

I love how in the beginning RCE kept saying 6 by 6 spots when he wanted to say 3 by 2.
My brain itched so hard every time he said it xD
We MADE this game and this video is giving us anxiety.......
How did no one notice this besides rce himself
As an actual citizen of Moscow - can confirm, this 'questionable' road design lines up with reality
I've used roads to block the shops from spawning, and from what I've figured the game will always grow the number of trips required regardless of how many shops you have. So if you have 1 shop but the game wants 10 trips, that 1 shop is going to have to support the 10 trips; if you let a new shop spawn then both those shops will divide the load and only want 5 each.
In effect, blocking shops from spawning is a sort of 'hard-mode' for the game in where you're using your roads to block new shops while what few shops you do allow have incredibly high demands for trips to them.
Getting a Let's game it out vibes here
"Is there a limit?"
I would love to see him play this
Let's game it out would completely wreck this game until it submits to him. :D
RCE: I'm gonna put traffic lights at every intersection
Me: Welcome to America
There's volume traffic lights, and there's timed traffic lights.
But it's in the whole continent of America, we love traffic lights here.
I think they should add *right of way" routes where the main lane can always go before the crossing smaller lane. Like this you could also handle houses very well and they wouldn't be blocking main roads
Those are called "motorways"
@@CaTastrophy427 not really. You at least here in Germany there is a large difference between an "Autobahn" (Motorway) and a "Vorfahrtsstraße" (A street in which you have right of way, meaning that all incoming Traffic has to wait till they don't block any traffic on the main route) I would just like the possibility that the homes don't work like right before left because thag blocks the whole main route if you connect homes to it while Motorways (at least in the Game since, you can't build secondary connections to it ate just fast travel from a to b)
@@xNumbercrunsher In Britain we just have main roads and side roads. Looking at any T-Junction will tell you which is which. The "arms" of the T are always along the main road and they have right of way.
Plot twist: This game is actually a huge ploy for a learning AI to factor in all incoming road construction ideas to later plot out real life roadways. The AI has decided from this gameplay that traffic lights should be placed outside of everyone’s doorstep
Hey! A good way to ease congestion within the same colour is to have a few houses going into each building, so if you have 6 houses and 2 supermarkets, you'll have smoother car flow if you have 3 houses for each supermarket instead of all 6 connected to both supermarkets
Yep. This game is the opposite of real life: segregate everyone and don't give them any choices.

"Ah, how prettier Moscow has become under Sobyanin!", am I right?
Someone did it a bit ago and their conclusion is the unspawned businesses demands is added up to the existing ones. Which prevents this game of roadblocks 😂

"People haven't done this before" ... this is exactly what people do to control spawns in this game and get scores in the 100 thousands XD
In game traffic lights can help speed main routes at junctions with a quiet road. They create gaps by bunching local traffic, so they can move a little quicker after.
But roundabouts are simply better early game, using space helps then, while later on you often have no room
HydroPhil showed ultimate blocking in a video 😁
If your games went similarly, you score slowly but when the dam bursts, you cannot keep up due to massive demand.
I think you often avoid major restructuring on all your mini motorway videos, which is lovely from an engineering perspective.
9:15 The game will not give you any new tiles until you stopped right-clicking
I've tried this and I swear the game gets revenge by putting buildings and houses on opposite ends of the map so you have to pick up all the blocking roads to use them for regular roads. i do use the blocking when things start getting crowded.
If you want to block markets from spawning, you can make life a lot easier by pre-blocking the edges with temporary roads so the 6's are already blocked upon expansion, and then redrawing them after.
Like others have said, it could also be interesting to force the spawns into certain locations. You could probably force markets to spawn parallel to eachother. Even better if you have an idea which color you're going to get as you can put them horizontally parallel when it's the same and vertically parallel for different ones so it's easier to segment.
You can improve that a bit because malls don't directly spawn next to each other.
Where you need to have crossroads, try and stagger them, because cars slow down for 4-ways, but not for 3-ways unless their path is blocked.
One of his older videos of him playing this game got recommended and now here I am. Addicted.
This game made me realize, that Sunday is considered the first day of the week in parts of the english speaking world
what? but it's the last day of the week in-game.
@@empirecrumbles615 I just checked to verify. You always start on a sunday and get new tiles when it's turning from saturday to sunday. So that means, that the first day of the in-game week is a sunday and the last day of the in-game week is a saturday, but correct me if I'm wrong or I overlooked something.
edit: I first checked it on the Los Angelos map, but I just checked it on some other maps aswell.

Traffic lights are there to moderate the road use to make it safe in terms of car accidents and pedestrians, two things not modeled in the game. So the only thing you actually get from them is the side effect - traffic jams.
So basically you get all of the downsides of traffic lights with none of the upsides.
They look neat though.

word of advice: it doesn't register the end of the week in terms of granting upgrades until you exit draw/erase/edit mode. this is why it didn't offer you an upgrade: you were holding right click the entire time so you could see the grid

Small tip for this strat: "markets" can't spawn right next to each other. :)
Not only markets. Houses don't spawn next to markets either. There's a default 1 square gap.
I’ve never been this early lmao. It’s 1:40am here in Australia and I should definitely sleep so I’m not dead for zoom classes BUT... real civil engineer uploads mini motorways therefore I stay awake. The obsession with these videos is real😅
A trick that I use is that I try and prevent a 4 way cross from happening by preventing spawns in certain locations and only putting traffic stops on a congested arterial that leads to a low traffic distributor road whilst also trying to make sure the traffic from the distributor road only wants to make right hand turns on to the arterial road. Its a headache but I can easily hit 3k without much effort and restructuring.
Can you make a video of this 👀
I just got my first 5k score and it was a headache
@@AllieHanichak I would love to but my computer is specs are very abysmal. My computer struggles to play games like terraria and starbound on minimal settings. The basic idea though is to block storefront spawns that are in non ideal locations and leave a space where you want it. Statistically if there is only one place to fit a store, it will put it there first instead of blocking it with a house. then its just a matter of not making 4 way stops. This will require a bit of knowledge about how big the map is when fully zoomed so you can try and get roads pre placed to make the arterial and the distributor roads. sorry if not well explained its currently 1am and I'm sleep deprived. xD
stopping spawning helps for a little while but eventually demand goes so crazy that the 1 supermarket can't process enough traffic and you lose, the demand is based on the amount of total houses from what I can tell, and so the more houses you have compared to supermarkets the more demand there is. So eventually you spawn so many houses that the 1 supermarket cant handle all that demand.
I’ve been looking forward to this for days!
I have become addicted to mini metro and mini motorways.
Because of you.
I blame you.
For all the fun.
I would love to see more of you properly playing Mini Motorways! I love your strategies and how you go about playing the game, so i hope you'll do more of those, although there are many "hacks" to prevent certain spawns, its just way more fun to watch a proper game, for me at least! :)
I’m not even an engineer but I LOVE your content and this game
I'd like you to learn the ways of managing spawns, it would be interesting to see what you can achieve. It is the most efficient strat after all.
Theoretically always blocking the outer most grid with diagonal 2-piece roads would be the best, as it makes everything spawn close together and it doesn't drain you out of road tiles.
Your on to the right idea. Block some locations to guide the spawns into your favor.
Hey! Can you please do a video on Frostpunk. I think it would be perfect for you.
2:03 the "hello" made me turn around lol
In my opinion, managing spawns may be the way to get high highscores, but it ruins the game for me. It becomes less about making efficient roads and more about constantly making sure nothing spawns, which isnt fun in my opinion.

I don’t really enjoy watching people cheese the game cause they always mess up at some point

You're videos genuinely help me fall asleep. I can't sleep without something in the Background and these videos are always nice.
I saw a behind the scenes of sorts for this game, I think it was a TED talk, and in it, they mentioned that businesses have a 1-tile border around where no other business can spawn, to ensure that no business is ever made inaccessible by another, I don't know if that knowledge helps MUCH for this technique, but it might save a road tile here or there since you don't need to cover right next to an existing business
I'm convinced they've coded the lights better than they have roundabouts 😅
