"Work-Life Balance" is a Scam

The "work-life balance" has been sold to us as the key to having a balance between your work life and home life, but in this video I debunk the myth of the work-life balance. Late-stage capitalism has eroded away at the boundaries between your personal and work life and many employers can't wait to exploit you under the guise of a work-life harmony/balance.

I really dislike feeling like I only live my life 2/7ths of the time (sat and sun). I feel robbed of my greatest resource - my time. I dont know how to escape this and still have my needs met.

    • @Jadenyoung1
      @Jadenyoung1 5 месяцев назад +6

you havent all your needs met, you would feel better otherwise. Chances are, you are also not "feeling" like that, but probably are living only a fraction of your life.
Because most people do. We dont live anymore. We exist.

What kills me, is that they call us the lazy generation because we’re having this realization and don’t want to continue with it. I’m a teacher and it feels impossible to detach my job from my life.
I saw a quote that said the secret to “work-life balance” is generational wealth and I think that’s the truth… either that or abusing your mental.

I cringe when I hear employers use the term “work-life balance.” Reminds me of “we’re like a family here.” All just an attempt to sound like they care about you and they’re a “c00l b0$$” lol.

The way to find if it the work life balance is real is from glassdoor and if you are new at the job, try to come and go as you please and see if you get called out. If not, work life balance. And remember great companies don't advertise work life balance. They practice it. My best boss practiced work life balance by leaving early almost every friday. Which paved us the whole team to do the same. Plus he was the kind of boss who let us work and only came to us for emergencies which were few and far between. And if you need help, he would answer all your questions. I thought all bosses were like this. But boy was i wrong my last 2 bosses were way more demanding. One boss kept calling every hour via zoom and tracked my progress down to the minute.

Lets not forget to mention that having the weekend off is also something that most retail employees don't even get. It adds to the mental stress when you spend your whole weekend working for customers that are relaxing all weekend; and then when you have some time off it's the middle of the week and there's nothing to do. Plus your days off usually aren't two in a row, it will be one day here, one day there.

My job went fully remote when Covid started and I’m much more content working from home 😊 I don’t have to commute, have forced social interactions with coworkers, cook from home, save more money, fit in some exercises, etc. I do data entry and type a lot at work, so I play podcast or music when I’m working and it helps create a relaxing work environment.

Because America is obsessed with individualism, the work-life balance "myth" is really just placing the responsibility of managing time, resources, and expectations on the cattle, I mean, employees....rather than a cultural shift that would bake in more time for rest and slowing down. Slowing down doesn't drive up profit margins!

This isn’t a commentary on you, really, but I find it fascinating how much was done to undermine younger generations’ independence before people started to notice, especially the middle class. I’ve had these conversations since I was a teenager so it never occurred to me other people didn’t think “work/life balance” while being expected to pull five ten or twelve hour shifts was weird or toxic. I assumed everyone else knew that based on statistics hours worked should’ve gone down significantly and “the gig economy” was a scam to keep people reliant on following their parents orders and we just didn’t talk about it for some reason.

When events like appointments, moving, meeting friends, doctor’s visits, or career changes arise, you're constantly on someone else's schedule. For anything to be addressed, it has to be significant enough for them to guilt-trip you. This same principle applies to an office job. The constant worry about what colleagues will say throughout the week is incredibly stressful and exemplifies office drama at its worst.

  • @ApricusInaros

What gets on my nerves are these "get together" events, which you called pizza party in this video. It's when employers set up social gatherings for co-workers with the premise of bonding as a team. During that "bonding" time you of course can't have your work done and have to work even more extra hours because of that. It is getting more extreme with these, as if a normal professional with a healthy work ethic can't do a proper job in a team without knowing what her team mate Cathy is doing in her private life.
My current employer does organize Christmas team brunches in a restaurant, but you have to pay half of the cost yourself. My last employer didn't want to pay Christmas dinners anymore and changed it into Christmas get together events at the office, where the employees had to cook themselves.
At this point I avoid any of these gatherings if I'm not paid for the time spent there or I at least can network with people outside my department for future job opportunities. Work-life balance indeed is a farce!

My past employer would legit tell us they're throwing a pizza party for lunch and that we didn't have to clock out for it. The naive people I worked with thought, oh cool! They're buying us pizza on a stressful Thursday! And I'm like ?? They are discouraging you from leaving the office, they are discouraging you from stopping work, they are discouraging you from taking a break. I told them to take the free food AND clock out lmao

in my country we work 45 hrs/week. My job is not conventional, but even for that I get calls out of work hours and have unrealistic expectation for deadlines. I had my vacations planned and wass forced to cancelled it to last minute bc I "have" to finish a ton of work that, being realistic, is not gonna be complete even if I work 60 hours/week.... Half of my therapy is about how I feel in my job and not being payed enough...

Work-Life Balance made sense in the 1970's because work wasn't 24/7. I mean even TV shut off at a certain time. There were no computers, fax machines, no smartphones, no social media. Things actually stopped. I mean there was a time department stores didn't open on Sundays, or holidays. There was a huge outcry here in NY when Old Navy actually opened ON Thanksgiving, right after the parade. There's NO work-life balance today because things simply don't stop.

I used to work in an office for almost 10 yrs. Then we went 100% remote during Covid. This helped me mentally SO much bc it was 1 less stressor in my life (physically being at work, working in a cubicle for 8 hrs).
What also helped is I got another remote job that I actually really enjoy. This took me years to find though, so i understand ppl’s frustrations. Not offering this as a solution bc I understand how tough it is. Just sharing my journey, but I found that bc I enjoy my work I can unplug with ease. So maybe that’s the key. Finding something you enjoy doing so that it doesn’t feel like it’s over taking your life in a negative way. And an employer that isn’t just paying lip service and they really encourage you having a life (which mine does).

Any positive change in work (regarding the worker class) has been done by force. Corporations will only do something, if they have to.
They will never do so, by their own choice. And why would they?

Am in a book club rn watching The Wire and Severance, lowkey hard not to judge others when they ask things like "well why don't these characters just move somewhere else?" or even better "Are they taking supplements for their back pain?"
It's great when people are willing to listen and ask questions but it's just exhausting to explain these topics to people who think they've achieved a work/life balance. Helps to have videos like these that I can throw at them or articles about the history of Union Busting in the US. People are legit shocked when they hear about Gregg Abbot preventing mandated water breaks for construction workers, y'all really just seeing this now huh?

I started having seizures because I was so stressed out working at Walmart :( I ended up in the hospital several times this year and my medical bills now are literally half of my pay. I decided it's time to change things, I stopped caring so much, stopped letting managers and customers treat me like crap. I stopped doing the work of 3 people for pay that I can't even feed myself or pay rent with. I'm taking extra classes in college and I'm really working hard to enjoy life again. This system is literally killing us! But remember that we're all strong and resilient. My dad always says that the modern American capitalist system is made to isolate people and make them hopeless so they don't work together to make things better. I find that having friends and family helps a lot, we can support each other like humans have for thousands of years. I'm studying anthropology, humans would not be here today if our ancestors hadn't helped each other, mended each other's wounds, nurtured each other. Capitalists tell us that humans are naturally selfish and greedy, but science shows us ancient skeletons with healed fractures. Our brains are wired to work together and take care of each other. We're not wired to work and stress this much.

Probably just more compact work schedules and more guaranteed paid leave. Companies now want too much overtime and often have basically a skeleton crew. The most popular reform is a 32 hour work week being considered full-time. Obviously, that’s not possible for every job, but ones that can’t reduce the hours should pay a premium to retain workers. (Also this is only possible if the ghost of Reagan is killed.)
EDIT: also unions. Forgot about unions (tbf I thought “unions” were implied.)

I have to wake up early, I get home late just to cook my lunch for next day, take a shower and go to sleep. I'm so exhausted even if I have some hours left I don't have any energy left and I just want to sleep. On saturdays and sundays I mostly sleep a lot trying to get some rest.

It’s so awful! “Work-life balance” isn’t just an unattainable goal that isn’t doable under the current hustle culture and expectations, but I feel like it’s just rhetoric used to shift responsibility to us as individuals to “do better” and “be better” when everyone is cracking under the strain.
The reality is that work and LIFE can’t be compartmentalized. Work - especially FULL TIME work - IS your life. Every moment you are living and breathing is part of your life. It affects you. It’s not some separate thing that “doesn’t count”.
But especially a full-time career in this culture where your job is basically your identity whether you like it or not (not saying it’s right - just observing), it’s NOT separate. The very notion that we try to live as though it is seems insane to me.
We are multifaceted beings, but we aren’t fractured. Those hours put into work are hours of our lives as living breathing human beings, not cogs in corporate machines.

last year I worked in a restaurant for the summer, I had only one day off a week and in august only one in the whole month. They paid me 4 euros for hour… I live in a very touristic city in italy and this is the sad reality of many young people. I worked 45 hours a week, and I was only 19. There are even worse conditions here, and young people still in high school or university are already tired of working ‘cause no one cares about their mental health, not the employers and not even the older generations. We can’t creat a “work-life balance” because we’re either studying or working already ourselves to death.
