  • The cub cadet is rated to 25 degree hills or a 46% grade-we push that to the limits. Its also Big- but nimble- we test that & its 6 wheel steering. Yep all 6 wheels work together to keep this mower from tearing up grass- but does it work? We go up close and personal to show you in detail what is inside this machine.

I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

I come from Cleveland (MTD country) and I grew up hearing about how Cub Cadet went down hill after the we’re purchased. I witnessed first hand friends and family having issues with theirs Cubs and swearing off the brand forever. Well this year I needed a new mower for my property which has considerable slopes and I went shopping. I Demoed a Scag TT2, Ferris (can’t remember the model), Exmark Lazer E, and a Spartan. I wasn’t even considering a Cub because let’s be real, CC isn’t even in the same league as the aforementioned. Well my local Scag dealer convinced me to give one of these a try and I begrudgingly agreed. Long story long, I purchased a 760S and you can’t slap the smile off my face while I’m cutting. Hills that used to scare me every time are as worrisome as a dreary day and after spending some time on the other machines (Exmark left their mower at my place for 6 weeks) the overall quality for these CC’s is unmatched even by the best names in the industry. I’m in no way connected to cub or have anything to gain by saying so but all I know is the Pro Z’s are the real deal.

What a great review. I have been loosely in the market for a big zero turn mower and had seen these advertised but have not seen anyone who actually owns one. The features like the hydraulic release built into the parking brake lever and the sealed bearings along with the air ride seat make this one rise to the top of the short list for me. Thanks for an honest real world review. I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and find all of your videos to be aimed at the real users of the equipment. Many of the engineers who design this stuff should watch them also. Thanks.

I have a cub cadet. Not the professional model just the regular one and I like it. Does an awesome job cutting. A couple things I would change though. I don't like the backup safety switch. Turn the key back and press a button. The John Deere one I had before didn't have a switch so I always forget to turn it on. Second thing I would change is the bagger. It requires the inertia of the blades to throw the grass hard enough to make it into the bags. I seem to always plug the pipe unless the grass is really dry, or short. If I go into an area that has tall or wet grass, it plugs right away.

I have used a Tank S which is a predecessor to that model for three years on my 8 acres of rough and steep yard. Single rears 60" cut. I have never run a lap bar zero turn so can't compare but I mow parts of my yard that I know a lap bar mower would get in trouble quickly. Just hope you don't have to replace the power steering unit after warranty is up.

Stan, fantastic job! Ive had 4 cub cadets, 3 push mowers, and 1 of my favorite tractor ever old reliable, my Cub Cadet GT2544 Heavy Duty Garden Tractor. The tractor is indestructible. Nothing can stop that thing and its little Kohler Command engine. Its shaft driven with the professional cast iron hydro. Its a beast. And the 3 push mowers 1 has been great 1 has been good and 1 ok. One is a budget model and has never needed anything but normal matinence. The 2nd one was a cub cadet sc590 I believe and its ok except for a snapped handle. The last one was a commercial model with caster wheels and a Kawasaki engine. I HATE KAWASAKI ENGINES! We did matinence every year and the engine threw a rod and bent the crankshaft. So it wasnt really cubs fault as much as Kawasaki. Thats my second bad Kawasaki. The other bad one i had was on a john deere x540 and that machine just is a piece of crap compared to my cub. Anyway i hope you have a great day Stan.

Now if only that would build a larger garden tractor as tough, I would be interested. My old International Cub is 51 years old and still pulls winter duty. I have a lot of faith in the old girl, but the day will come where she needs to be replaced. I looked at the XT3s when I was looking for a mower and was not impressed. This machine is highly impressive in it's construction. I just wish they would put half as much effort into consumer grade equipment.

When these first came out I thought it was for homeowners who couldn't figure out how to work a zero turn. Seems to have the good stuff, Parker pumps, air ride seat. The simple Hydro unlock is awesome, if you get stuck. I still think the steering wheels goofy as f***, too complicated mechanically. It still tears up the grass. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you get close enough around trees it's less weed whacking.
    For 16k I'll buy a diesel Kubota.
Also on your trimming comment around 16 minutes. Weed whack first! Weed whack first, leave yourself a nice couple feet around everything. For one you don't get what you just trimmed all over the fresh cut grass. It gets mulched up as you're mowing. And for two, you don't have to be precise around s***, you can just haul ass on the mower. When I started weed whacking first, it cut 10% off my mowing times.

I've used every type of mower that has ever been manufactured, you will tear spots up no matter what type of mower you use. That's just a fact. I'm running a Z760S on the farm, and truthfully I'm seeing less turf damage that with using a tractor type mower. As far as longevity and durability, that is the only question left to ask, but I don't see any forseeable problems with proper maintenance and just using common sense. CC did their homework in my opinion, but time will tell. I would like to get my hands on the 972SD for a month or two though, just to see how it handles compared to the Z760S on the terrain that I mow on a weekly basis. The 25 degree rating is well under what I have comfortably mowed, even the 46 degree you say you have "pushed the limits" with is well under what I have seen with single rear wheels on the Z760S. It's all about what you feel comfortable with. But with the terrain we have here in Northeast Tennessee, I guess we have just learned to push the limits a little farther (ok, a lot farther) the most people do. Very good video.

Stan... you should test drive a John Deere X739 garden tractor with the 4 wheel drive/4 wheel steer with the 60 inch deck. Up hill, down hill, side ways, wet or dry conditions, it don't matter. Cuts well, turns very tight, and is fast enough. I also use it to pull out my zero turns when they get stuck in steep wet ditches. I would guess the price of the John Deere (at about 12 K) is about 2/3 the cost of that Cub. I mow commercially in Hutchinson. MN. Blessings

I love your reviews because if it can handle your craziness, I'm good!! Keep up the great reviews. BTW, do you have a review on the Gravely battery powered Z turn?

This may be the wrong forum for even mentioning my measly little Cub Cadet Pro Z 148 S. However, if the Pro Z 972 SD will handle mowing side hills like my little machine, it'll have no problem at 30 degrees plus. Amazing! Let's see ANY lap bar model do that.

I get what you are saying about the lap bar but besides the "old school" look issues with a steering wheel and bulky steering column, I MUCH prefer lap bar control (steering + forward + reverse) to steering wheel + pedal forward + pedal reverse. I see no reason why steerable zero turn with lap bars will not be a thing in the future. I look for someone like EGO to innovate in that regard. Just mate up a couple of small DC motors to the caster spindles and wire them in to the CPU that controls the drive train.

15:48 Going around the deck looked like it chewed up lawn? I know the countersteering is cool (was my 1st question when I saw the steering wheel) but with a stick machine you can countersteer as well? The only advantage I see is going on the side of a hill, otherwise you have way more parts and things to potentially service. Looks tough though and would love to try one someday

Still slow compared to a Hustler Super Z Hyperdrive which can mow at 16 mph.... And if you make a 180 turn with the inside rear wheel not moving forward or backward at all, you're going to tear up turf on a damp lawn. But it does look like they (CC) have definitely made some serious improvements.

Any owners care to share their long term opinion on these machines? This is way over my budget for a mower for very hilly property but don't want to regret purchasing the wrong machine. Other considerations are Kubota Z700, Spartan, or going to a sub-compact tractor with belly mower. I currently have a Z421 and mid size tractor, looking to add a machine for second property, thanks.
