- Coffee addiction is real and Americans drink more coffee than anyone else. The latest edition of the American Psychiatric Association's "Mental Health Bible" lists caffeine intoxication and withdrawal as new diagnoses. Dr. Holly Phillips explains why caffeine addiction is so bad.
Coffee is a drug. I didn't start drinking coffee till I decided to pursue a college degree close to 10 years ago at age 33. It was everywhere on campus and I started to drink it everyday . I became very addicted to the liquid and now as I type this comment I'm day 2 cold-turkey quitting coffee... finally. I've got a severe headache right now literally but I don't care I'm going to push through and get past the withdrawals and get back to living my life not being dependent on a cup of liquid. I never needed it before I don't need it now and I strongly believe that is a Unwritten drug. The issue is is majority of the world consumes caffeine everyday therefore you have a whole planet of people that are in extreme denial I don't care what anyone says. Impulsive behavior skyrockets off of coffee not to mention anxiety. It'll raise your blood pressure and people have had heart populations that put them in the hospital from coffee. Anything that makes you tense up and not be loose is not good for you. If you need a cup of coffee to not be an a****** then it's an issue. I never was like that but the withdrawals that I'm feeling now show me that it is a drug otherwise there wouldn't be a withdraw.
Is decaffeinated coffee a good replacement?
Update? How’s your no coffee going? This is my 5th day and I have a persistent headache
Thanks for sharing. Say two for me too! I'm experiencing headache, as well as fatigue. Also, one of the first positives, I've noticed already, since quiting. The top number of my blood pressure has went down to the 120's all day. Amazing. We had no idea, how much coffee was slowly killing us.
i started drink 4 cup of coffe once started college too. but usually i reduce drink coffee during semester break and dial back up on exam period . But i quick felt the effect of brain fog and depression after 1 year of 4 cup non stop everyday . I stopped for 1 month and my depresion is gone , brain fog improved .
I tried to quit and gave up after two days. The withdrawal felt like I was getting the flu. It really bothers me how dependent I am on it. I want to quit but don’t know how. I sound like a heroin addict lol.
Me too but I need it to function all week at work!!
Not sure if this advice is helpful after a year but try slowly withdrawing from it. As in instead of four cups a day just three and then gradually go down to zero.
Meth and caffeine = enhanced utlra adderall
Has anyone else experienced loss of smell and taste after quitting caffeine? Not even complete loss of taste, but more like everything just tastes bad and unsatisfying. And if so, how long did it take to get those senses back?
@@shelbrianne I have not heard of this. Is it possible you have covid?
If a harmful drug like caffeine or alcohol is legal but a harmless one like weed is illegal, the law wasn't made with your wellbeing in mind
Caffeine is dangerous. It’s sad that us humans experience such parin, trauma and pressure to make us susceptible to unhappy things like drug or caffeine addictions. Really sad.
I didn’t know how painful coffee withdraw is until the last two days. Two days ago I run out of coffee, I usually drink 5-6 cups per day, and I had only decaf in my kitchen so I drank 3-4 cups of decaf. I gradually felt my head hurting until I couldn’t see my pc screen. I have to mention that during quarantine I am working from home and I spend more than 8 hours in front of a screen. So It started with headaches. Next day I also had decaf only coffee and until lunch I was feeling terrible, the headache was getting worst, I felt like I want to throw up, and I was REALLY sleepy, I was feeling my whole body hurting. Resulting to sleeping almost all day long (except my distance meeting hours). Today, when I woke up, I realized that all of this is due to the lack of caffeine , so I ordered a cup from a coffee shop , with the first sip I felt better, no headache, no nausea, nothing. I realized how addicted I am to caffeine so I start doing my research on it. A piece of advice for you, stop it gradually if you don’t want to feel terrible.
caffeine withdrawal takes 4+ months before you feel normal, not a week.
Thanks 🙏
I have a Question.. why do you say 4+ months? From personal experience I'm just wondering.
@@juancamaney3305 I'm not OP, but for me it was only a few weeks. But I only drank 1-2 cups/day.
It definitely takes longer than a week. I'm almost a month in and still experiencing symptoms.
@@survivor504 what kind of symptoms?
I'm quitting during the cornavirus pandemic my anxiety is through the roof my head is pounding and I'm exhausted
Im pretty forcing myself to. :( Because of the pandemic
Good luck!
Lucky you started before me. I am on day 2, and already dealing with a horrible headache.
@@fairplayer7435 take ibuprofen
😂 you make it sound like you're quitting hard drugs.
For me even drinking ONE cup of coffee per morning creates withdrawal symptoms if I skip it. I didn't know that it happened because of caffeine. Now I avoid everything that has caffeine and I feel gr8.
Coffee and caffeine drinks are pure evil
I quit caffeine a few months ago. I still drink decaf sometimes when it’s cold. The coffee place accidentally gave me a caffeinated cup one day. I literally shook and had massive anxiety for 4 hours from a small cup of coffee. That’s when I realized how bad it must be for me if my body had adjusted to that chemical to the point I barely felt anything!!
i see cops high on caffeine chasing other dudes who are also high. crazy world init makes yer wanna howl
Now that your say it, lol
Bad boys bad boys, what's you gonna do when they come for you 🤣🤣
I had been drinking a 32 cup in the morning for months until the store I go to closed. The side effects were awful!
Splitting headache, puking my guts outs, & chronic fatigue. I didn’t make the connection at all until I did this 3x in a row. Caffeine addiction is real & very unpleasant.
I’m caffeine dependent. I’m up to a pot a day and definitely have a headache til it’s in my system
I did not realize my withdrawal was real. I only drink 4 cups a day. Can't sleep. I sleep at 6-7am. Occasional migraines. Which I thought were normal because of my stressful job. I decided to stop drinking coffee. And the withdrawal effects were worse. I had anxiety and depression. I felt I had a flu for more than 2 weeks. I was so weak and couldn't do anything but lie down. Sitting down tires me. Now I'm back to drinking coffee again. I feel like my day isn't complete if I haven't had my coffee. I'm on my 3rd cup today while watching this video.
No such things as having a little bit of coffee. ... and I’m sure those who tell us that caffeine has health benefits are reeling the benefits from the addicts
You can't recommend moderation to something you are addicted to, that's asinine!
i know right?!?
Exactly. If moderation worked then we would not even have the concept of addiction😁
Yeah I've noticed whenever there's a health expert talking about coffee on one of these talk shows the hosts always try to make a joke of how addicted people are to coffee and then try to add in these supposed 'health benefits'. I wonder if the powerful interests invested in the coffee trade might have something to do with that?
If you use something in moderation it ceases to be an addiction.
i was not ready for this caffeine withdrawal. i have the worst headache, chills, nausea, trembling...it just goes to show how toxic this drug is. i don't want it in my life anymore.
For how many days
If you want to quit caffeine drink 3 litres of water during the day, water helps to clean the body from caffeine.
I can atone for all of this. Right now i am teetering off caffeine, after getting medical advice via phone i realised my caffeine intake was around 1200mg a day. 4 to 5 cups in the morning 2 scoops of pre workout when going to the gym, and the occasional energy drink at work at night. The withdrawals are no joke but i know i can beat the addiction, for those who are going through the same withdraws, hang in there im with ya buddy.
There are somethings you can't have in moderation, such as anything harmful.
Common sense
Around 2 pots of coffee everyday for 43 years. Been drinking coffee since i was 17. Never drank much straight water. I always have coffee next to me and drink it constantly. My weight has stayed the same since high school. 165 lbs. I don't sleep normal. Im up average 36 hours before i even start to get tired. Been that way for years. Everybody else just sleeps their life away. Im not letting the grim reaper catch me sleeping. He'll have to fight me for my soul. And my cup of java. Ha ha.
You’re honestly probably making him come quicker
So the answer is to take a prescription drug much more addictive and dangerous than caffeine?
I am so glad I don’t drink a single sip. Ridiculous how this is normalized when heart disease is the largest cause of death and caffeine affects the heart. Oh but if you smoke weed you are an addict and need to go to jail.
This is crazy. She says "it's all about moderation." Would you tell that to an alcoholic or a drug addict? When you have an addiction, there is no such thing as moderation. Not everyone becomes addicted to caffeine, just like everyone doesn't become an alcoholic. But if caffeine addiction is a real thing, we need to treat it as such. If you're an addict it's not okay to have an occasional cup of coffee or use caffeine 'in moderation". Trust me. It won't work. The hard part isn't quitting. It's staying quit. Your addicted brain will come up with all sorts of reasons why you need to start up again.
I've just adjusted My 2 mugs a day to one regular to start My day and one decaf mug. I had the Big headache on day 2 but I have other lingering symptoms like getting up in the middle of the night to pee. Must be other physical withdrawals hang on for a little longer.
I talked about Me switching to decaf with a friend of Mine and He snapped at Me like He was a drug addict on the matter.
I hate coffee but I’m always drinking other caffeinated drinks like tea and soda, I need to stop.
What if you skip your coffee and you are very very energetic with your heart pounding? Is that a withdrawal or is that something unrelated
Moderation.....hahaha they always slip that in at the end.
I am day 9, tapering off with the decaf method seems the most painless of the choices but I used Teeccino (a no-caf herbal coffee) because even decaf has some caffeine
So how do we cure the withdrawal of caffeine by cutting it all completely and if we do that how long until we’re back to normal my head is killing me.
My Next Goal on my journey to a healthy everyday lifestyle is caffeine withdrawal.
Even though I began drinking coffee when I was 16 it wasn't until later years like 19, 20 when I was in College that I started drinking more than 1 cup of coffee a day... And this became the norm... I never thought of stopping. But I heard from people that stopped drinking coffee that they feel much better.
I'd like to understand how it feels. I therefore want to try and see on my own.
Until then, I'd like to hear from you.
What was the beginning like, how did it feel when you stopped drinking coffee, and finally how different are you feeling today not having coffee at all?
What scares me and holds me back from doing it is the symptoms of caffeine withdrawal.
Since I developed a dependence on caffeine, if I stop now it can cause withdrawal symptoms like: Headaches, Tiredness, Difficulty concentrating, Nausea, Muscle pain which will affect my mood...
I know how it affects me when I sometimes don't have it in the morning. I start getting a headache… I can easily fast the whole day but not having coffee is brutal…
So to stop drinking coffee, knowing (from what I read online) that I may experience these symptoms not just one day or 2 but it may take even up to 9 days is scarry…
What would you suggest I should do? What can you share with me about your journey? How did you deal with it?
I guess I can just take pain killers for the headache. Will that help?
I told myself I need coffee. Maybe it's just in my mind? Maybe like with every drug the body is craving it and it says it needs it, but who says I really need it.
Another thing is that for me coffee with just one or even 2 spoons of sugar does not really taste that great so I drink a lot of coffee plus I consume a lot of sugar which is very unhealthy.
So I'm trying to slowly cut the sugar.
So far this week I went from using 3/4 teaspoons of sugar to using 2 tea spoons. And from having 3 cups of coffee a day to having 2 cups. Slowly hoping at some point to get back to just having one and eventually see if I can live without it…
I'm 3 days in, can barely stay away, constantly anxious, had a panic attack on day 2, sick to my stomach, highly depressed, can barely function because my body is so weak and exhausted. Its horrible for me.
Prayers for phil brooks and the guy holding the french bulldog sign in the crowd tonight. ❤❤❤.
i reckon if i switched the 2-5 cups of caffiene to water a day, it would mega help the ocd diagnosis, the sleep troubles, my engry levels, my teeth health and the poor diet i currently have.
This is For real for me. I have anxiety so bad with out coffee. Wawa coffee (reg) I want to stop drinking so much coffee . I wish I could stop. Any addiction is not good . For me anyways.
I had 3 of these symptoms first came the headaches then fatigue and finally I got so nauseous that I threw up 8 times
It's been a rough week it's day 6 I would drink 2 monster energy drinks a day sometimes three I have one when I wake up and another in the afternoon
I'm staying strong I'm never touch these energy drinks again I depend on it too much I spend like over 100 dollars a month which I could use for something else
How are you now
Okay so I am addicted to coffee. How many days until I feel better from removing this from my diet?
What's funny is they talking about moderation and benefits. If it is an addictive drug can you tell the addicts to take illegal drugs in moderation? And Marijuana has some health benefits too. Tsk tsk! Coffee is a billion dollar market and they don't want to mess it up.
Exactly! I think they say that nonsense so they don't get sued! These big corporations are determined not to go the way of the tobacco industry.
I'm coming down from 1200 mg tolerance. Every thing hurts. Headache and tired.
I drink one cup a day. Maybe another if I have to pull an all nighter.
It’s been almost two weeks since I’ve had caffeine and I feel like I’m dying, this is tough!
Currently struggling with this myself since I'm a morning worker and I need something to wake me up in the morning.
Give it a while and your natural wake up chemicals kick in
Today I'm on day 7 without caffeine, headache really bad almost close to panic attack.
Caffeine will be give you enlightment but cost will be suffer and reduce lifespan.
How long will it take
Dude the caffiene withdrawal is worse than alot of other withdrawals. I can go all day without a cig, ill need one eventually tho.
If i skip caffiene i get a horrible migraine with extremely high blood pressure. Pressure migraine
My head freaking hurts after not drinking my coffee in the morning, i just had it this afternoon i feel like my head is about to burst 😷😷😷😷🤕🤕🤕🤕
I tried to quit coffee and I ended up getting vertigo.
“A pot of coffee a day” um... for me it’s 4 ...
I was drinking two pots. That's twenty four (6 oz) cups a day.
I will never give up caffeine.
If it’s not negatively affecting you you’re probably not addicted
Dr. Phillips is hot.
Well then...
