My guess would be some legal reason. Whatever the issue was Gibson doesn't want this guitar out in the world where it could be resold and possibly tarnish their (cough) "stellar" reputation.

Got to tell ya, you have some serious skills with the bandsaw shaping that nice open book contour. Love what you're doing. Just like you i love to rescue violins, acoustic guitars, electric guitars and electric basses that needs some TLC. I bent down a krooked neck on a 5-string bass once with a steamiron and it worked like a charm. After that the trussrod worked like it was supposed to again. 😉I just love My Gibson Les Paul. The setup is so good and it plays great. Have a nice day you're awesome! ~Rob🎸

Back in 2010 I bought a Parker PM20 off ebay for $175. The guitar had fallen over and the top of the broke off at the nut - and was lost - fretboard was still intact. It took me a long time to figure out how to fix it, but I eventually cleaned up the fracture , gorilla glued wood patches and carved to match the Parker. Still have it today.

Love what you have done with that guitar Sean and the final product and this video proves you are a competent woodworker! So glad to see the scar guitar is now playing and doing what it was suppose to be doing i.e sounding and looking great. Getting that neck off took brute force! Makes you realise that not all guitar making/repairing is subtle, that bandsaw was pretty heavy duty as well (however, manipulating the wood around it and the router took some skills and experience no doubt)

Fantastic job! This is very interesting to me because I got a genuine 1970s set-neck Memphis brand guitar that is a shameless knock-off of a cherry sunburst Les Paul, right down to the authentic Gibson style headstock shape. Some people call those “lawsuit” guitars, but it never really went to court. Gibson just had their lawyers send a letter to companies like Ibanez and most of them changed their headstock. My guitar needs a new fingerboard too, and plastic binding as well. Thanks for giving me some ideas how to do the job.
I will now become a know-it-all and tell exactly why that poor goldtop was beat nearly to death, and I guarantee that it was all Guitar Center’s fault. At stores they put pressure on their employees to sell warranties with the expensive stuff. They tell you that they will cover whatever happens to your guitar for two or three years, or whatever, and if they can’t fix it they will give you a new guitar. They make a lot of extra profit from these warranties but every once in a while it comes back to bite them in the ass. So the guy that bought this Les Paul probably dropped it on its head and brought it back to the store because he had a warranty. You can bet that nobody working for GC was up to the task of fixing that broken neck, so they gave the customer a new guitar and, being the shady, selfish corporate jerks that they are, they made some store clerk beat it up with a tire iron until it was just about hopeless. There was just a small chance that some guy working at the shop might take it home and fix that neck. These corporations never give stuff like that to employees because they want their workers to spend their money in the store. I bet the pickups and the rest of the hardware was taken off that guitar and kept in the store, just in case somebody else that had a warranty needed a pickup or defective tuner replaced.
I guarantee that I’ve never worked for Guitar Center or any other music store, but I can swear on my great, great, great, grannie’s grave that was exactly what happened to that Les Paul Studio. Thanks Sean to you and your friend for rescuing that guitar from a landfill! And wish me luck fixing my “lawsuit” Memphis Les Paul!

Sean, so much fun!!! Cut that neck out of blank like a BOSS!! Appreciate the fretboard lifting how-to. I use a similar technique to flatten out warped pickguards right on the ironing board. Only takes a couple of lightly firm presses with the hot steam iron, with the pickguard sandwiched in between a couple of terry cloths or towels. Works amazingly well. I always learn great tips from your projects. Thanks to you both for the videos!

Former GC guitar tech here. So, the practice of "destroy/dispose on site" is very real, but it actually originates from outside GC. . . from a totally expected source--their insurance company. I'm not defending GC, quite the contrary (they did me real dirty), and even in this case they're 100% complicit in such waste, even if it doesn't originate from within. See, what happens is if a guitar is damaged to the point they don't think one of their techs can fix it (most stores have a very low bar for the techs), and shipping it to one of their repair hubs (plus the actual cost of repair, man hours plus supplies plus parts, etc) would cost more than the dealer cost of the instrument, they opt to write it off as a business loss to damage. At the corporate level, and as a sum of all their stores, the company is insured against that type of loss and receives a payout from their risk management/insurance for that damaged guitar. It is NOT the vendors/manufacturers that provide that credit, usually. There ARE some cases in which the manufacturer will do a warranty replacement (whether to the store itself or to the customer) and have the original instrument destroyed on site. THOSE are the ones in which usually they ask for photo proof of destruction, and there is a specific way in which it needs to be done. For example, one company (I'd rather not say who, I still keep ties with people within this particular company) would have us SAW OFF the headstock at the nut, and SAW THROUGH the body cutting it in half at the waist. All the pieces would need to be arranged together with the serial number showing for the photo. We would have the option to strip it for parts and hardware to use as needed for shop use. The reasoning is (regardless of what I think of it) that since that instrument was already paid off, it would be fraud to resell that instrument because the insurance has already paid it off. Which translates to, basically, "if we can't make money off this anymore, then NO ONE can." Yes, I will freely admit I rescued several guitars (I have an AWESOME Epi SG I repaired a broken neck on) after being "thrown away" after being cycled out of inventory. I still use a couple of those regularly or gave them to my kids. All of them play great, just needed someone up to the task of taking on such a repair.

The 'inventory problem' is probably a flaw, damage, or warrantee issue of new stock that Gibson doesn't want to repair. So, to save shipping costs in a Return to Vendor, they require the damage you see documenting the serial number, and Guitar Center was issued a credit or replacement.

Can’t even imagine the sociopath that would intentionally do that to a brand new guitar. It really wouldn’t take much imagination to find a better solution. Shame on guitar center and Gibson

All retailers do this. What doesn’t sell goes to the dump. Old TV’s get locked in a trailer and sent to the dump.

Dude bro, you got a post your phone number in your channel bro I mean I’ve seen plenty of good guitar tech, but I gotta say I gotta hand it to you, your craft and workmanship and skills. Not just blowing smoke either.

All they had to do was remove the Gibson logo & serial number from the headstock, pull the pickups, and offer it as a builder's special...

I knew you could fix the damn guitar. I never had a doubt. But watching you do it and seeing the progress brings it home how wild it is that you’re that good. Ya you have all that equipment but that’s all just stuff unless you know how to use it. You’re wild! I’m curious about the gibson logo though. Is it still going to have the gibson silk screen on it and the les paul? What are your plans there?

Mad skills on the bandsaw! First saw I used in 7th grade wood shop, not much you can't cut on a bandsaw.

A local guitar shop had to destroy my Fender Sonoran due to a faulty pickup. It was the conditions they haf for replacing it since it was discontinued. The guitar shop was pissed, and Fender required proof of the full destruction. Its bullshit.

Great job Sean, could you not just go over the top with a rasp and call it heavy reliced. Looking forward to part 2.

Dude, I use to only build guitars, I watched you build that pickup machine. So, I took a clue and built one similar. Now, all I want to do is build and sell pickups. My father would thank you!

When I think of what I have been through to build my first guitar so I could give it to my best friend that was roommates with me at Mass General Hospital it makes me sick to see that someone did that to a Gibson . Not knowing anything about guitars at the start of my project has been a real challenge. I’m just hoping my friend Ray likes what I have built him.

So the real thing that happens is: if a guitar arrives broken, its not Gibsons fault, its technically the shippers fault but they wouldn’t take accountability. Gibson wont cover anything once its already bought for the store. So being that this particular guitar is only a tribute model, it just becomes a loss to the store and its up to the store if they want to try to fix it and sell it at a loss and have it sit there forever or take it apart for spare parts and throw away the damaged wood and make sure it cant be used again. So in reality its like they only lose a couple hundred but its worked into the loss budget and the guitar just doesn’t exist to them (inventory wise)

In 1990, I was in the Oakland, CA Guitar Center early on a Saturday - 11:30 AM. Suddenly, a group of locals entered the store and began destroying equipment in the Guitar section. (That section was closest to the front door.) Before the employees could even think what to do, they had destroyed several guitars. Then they vanished as quickly as they had entered the store.

When you cut the neck. You could have just cut it straight at the headstock. That's what Gibson does. Then they glue the wings on the headstock afterwards. It's weird, but that's how they do it.

Was there any binding on the fretboard? If not then that's probably why the fret tangs weren't snipped off on the ends.
