I agree with some of the observations - but not all - about France. I lived there for a few years and have visited countless times. I was just talking to a colleague earlier - of Huguenot descent - of how very Catholic France is. That's the Paradox. They idolise secularism but it's culturally still Catholic in many ways, especially when it suits them. The several public holidays a year are largely religious, so people might reject the basic premise but they like the time off. Don't forget that France also has a strong Far-Right contingent which is intermingled with mainstream politics. When extremists want to distance themselves from the non-white 'foreign hoard' they vilify -especially those from Muslim backgrounds - they wheel out the whole European 'Christendom' myth. That's when you really see that cultural Catholicism on display. I live in Belgium now and it's similar, although I believe more pronounced in France.

What did you not see in the past, that you see now? The Sabbath! Not just keeping A Sabbath, but keeping THE seventh day Sabbath and recognizing it as a blessing and a gift from God, not a mandate that we *have* to do.

Actually people have been keeping the Sabbath for a long time, even amidst the dark ages. The Jews keep the Sabbath and the Seventh Day Adventists have since the mid 1800's, and even some fridge anabaptist groups. The first and second great awakenings were powerful revivals that led to genuine repentance and radical new birth but the sabbath wasn't preached but the gospel of Jesus Christ. My Seventh Day Adventist family talks more about the Sabbath and the evils of the Catholic church then they do Jesus Christ and His glorious gospel. You always know when someone lifts up a denomination verses Jesus Christ Himself. If someone wants to keep the Sabbath praise God. If someone views all days alike them praise God. Let each be thoroughly convinced in his own mind. "One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind." Romans 14:5. "Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ." Colossians 2:16-17. "For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His." Hebrews 4:10. Jesus Christ is my Sabbath, not a day but a person in Whom I cease from my works based approach to God and rest in faith in His finished works just like God did on the seventh day. Praise God for Jesus!
