I am always down for a Julio-Claudian video🔥🔥🔥🔥
Was Caligula cruel and a psychopath? Probably yes, but consider his background. His father was the "wonderboy" darling of the Empire and he died when Caligula was a small child. His family then descended into paranoia, plots, infighting, political positioning to be Tiberius' successor that left Caligula's mother and two older brothers imprisoned and dead. The oldest brother, Nero was brought down accused of plotting to kill Tiberius and one of the witnesses against him was his brother Drusus. Agrippina, Caligula's mother and Nero both died, possibly through starvation. Drusus was starved to death in the prisons of Rome and he was mocked for trying to eat his bedding.
That would screw anyone up. Also, remember that Roman aristocrats had a reputation for being essentially arrogant, cruel and, in some cases maniacs.
As for his executing a lot of his enemies. They were trying to kill him to replace him on the throne. He had a reason to be paranoid, just remember we was assassinated and his wife and infant daughter were butchered with him.
Other things to remember about Roman history. Accusations about incest were a common political insult even in the Republic, Cicero frequent accused his enemiy Clodius of incest with his sister. Did he have a close relationship with his sisters, yes. Hardly surprising considering how his mother and older brothers were killed by Tiberius as threats to his throne. Did he commit incest with his sisters, possibly but unlikely as incest was a common slur to use against political enemies, and Caligula had a lot of enemies.
Incitatus getting the luxury treatment of slaves and rich ornamental decorations, that again was not unusual behavious. The Augustan politician, general, historian and friend of Augustus was infamous for keeping a pool of lampreys which he adorned with gold jewerly and he to punish his slaves for any minor misdeeds he would have them thrown into the lamprey pool as fish food.
He was for sure cruel and evil his first marriage was with his own sister Drusilla
@@ascendingstar5673 And the evidence for your silly claim is? I can't seem to find any references to his marrying his sister Drusilla in Suetonius, Cassius Dio or Tacitus or any other ancient Roman writer. As far as I am aware he was married to Junia Claudilla in AD 33 to 34, Livia Orestilla in AD37, Lollia Paulina in AD 38 and Milonia Caesonia in AD 39 - 41.
Caligula's busts always unsettled me. Even not knowing who he was, there was something sinister about him and I was glad he was 2000 years removed from the living.
There was nothing sinister about him, He was neither evil or a monster, He was simply human who had absolute power. It's easy to sit here a thousand or so years later and say I'd do this and I'd be that but you or I have never had absolute power over people and society. Human beings are the deadliest, Most cruel destructive killers to walk the earth and as far as we know in the universe, Caligula is far from a monster and we are all capable of batshit craziness and "monstrous" acts.
And having to spend your life in hiding avoiding execution and watching your family be hunted down and killed them later being betrayed by your own family and everyone around you can speed up the process of insanity.
Another wonderful video. Thank you.
Your videocasts are extremely entertaining and give us a refresher course in history. In our world today, unstable, brinking on world war, environmentally at the edge of the abyss, it is good to realize that this is the status quo of human existence. We are always one step away from catastrophe and one step in front of an assassin's dagger.
As always, thank you for making a useful video
So very interesting details we never knew thanks
Their mouths are remarkably similar. But maybe they didn’t all have dark eyes.
You should watch an old British series called I, Claudius with Derek Jacobi. It was very good for it’s time.
Yes, it's excellent.
The tv series I Claudius was made in 1976 I remember I was watching this with my parents when I was 10 years old 😄
@@ascendingstar5673It wasn't appropriate for a 10 year old to watch! 😃
Awesome! Thanks.. 💯
Thanks for making these videos I watch everyone when they are published.
This one is great, might I make a suggestion? The corner of lips should line up up with the center of a eye pupils. The mouths on two of the girls looked a bit small and unnatural.
Thanks so much for you videos.
Mulțumesc foarte frumos !
Thank you so much such informative video and bringing these historic people back to life
I really like videos about the Caesars.❤❤
How about a video about Claudius?
MUCHAS GRACIAS POR UN INTENSO E IMPRESIONANTE VIDEO¡¡ QUÉ FAMILIA¡¡¡ EXCELENTE CLASE DE HISTORIA 💚💙💜BRAVO¡¡¡
Sempre meravigliosi i tuoi video. In generale dico
You confuse Livilla with her aunt Livilla who was married to Tiberius son Drusus. Her aunt commited suicide after it was found that she had conspired with Sejanus against Tiberius and may have even poisoned her husband Drusus.
Livilla looks familiar. Like I've seen her face somewhere before. Nice reconstructions.
Thanks .Great fun.Its interesting how all the julio/claudian women are depicted as poisoners, whores, scheming monsters or manipulators.Caligula did not stand a chance. His father gone his mother exiled and murdered, the list goes on.Also incest is a perenial favourite for these writers, none of whom lived at the same time and all of whom were from the sanatorial classes who had a vested interest in making the Emperors look bad.
Yes, I changed it so people could find it easier
Lots of inbreeding resulting in Nero. Great vid
in the British series, i Claudius, Caligula killed his sister Drusilla because she was pregnant with his child and because he thought he was a god, he did not want the child to become more powerful than himself. I still remember Drusilla being tied up and the sword Caligula had carving out the child from her womb. Caligula was warped and riddled with SDTs.
The same faces of the italians.
We are the same people.
👍
Evil man, but he was good looking!!😮😊
Way better than his nephew that is for sure.😂😂
They all have such small mouths
Woah , great stuff. 🫡 👍
