I've owned two GMT800s. The first was a 2002 2500HD 6.0L, which I traded in back in 2009 for a truck I still own, a 2009 3500HD Duramax. In 2014 I bought a 2006 2500HD with the LBZ Duramax, but only kept it two years. I bought it to use for RV Transport, but gave up that "job" in favor of a real job.
A lot of younger folk don't understand that the "Silverado" name was just a trim level up until 1999. Thanks for pointing out that detail. That's what I love about your team - you get the details correct!

Have a 2001 Silverado as well as a 2020 Silverado. Both 5.3 extended cabs. Love both of them. I like the power and handling the 2020, as well as the heated steering wheel and seats. But in overall drivability, I will always love my 2001 the best. To me, believe it or not, it's more comfortable. It rides better. The handling is not that far behind the 2020. Visibility is better. It is so much simpler. No screen in your face, no autostop or cylinder deactivation. No cameras and not many gadgets. Just get in and drive. I drive it 20 miles to work every morning. If it had the power of the 2020, and wasn't as old as it is, I'd have no use for the newer one. GMT 800 is the sweet spot between newer technology and older simplicity in gm trucks. Rock solid reliability and when something does break, cheap parts and easy to fix. I will drive it until it rusts in to dust.

I felt that way about my 06 Nissan Titan. Tuned with headers and I made dual exhaust exit under the rear bumper. My favorite truck ever. Light on it's feet and power for days even pulling minivans or other big cars on my trailer. I used it for work, play and camping. Sold it at 300k miles. I still regret that because nothing has scratched that itch since. Funny thing; I was looking at gm and Ford pickups. Test drove a Titan and was so impressed I bought it on the spot. It's the best truck we've ever owned. I remember when he brought it home, I was so excited. We drove in that truck together a lot and have a lot of memories in it, which is why I'll never sell it. Sadly here in MN, the rust takes no prisoners and it's in tough shape, but I'll restore it someday.
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the new gas Silverados, and it's strictly about comfort. They're just not as comfortable, even my 2000 has better seats.
As far as Silverado EV, I really like the look. I think I'll wait a while to purchase as I'm sure they're still working the bugs out. Off-road programming needs to improve if it's anything like the HUMMER. I'm really looking forward to what a Silverado EV Trailboss would look like. The wheels on the Silverado EV work truck look awesome on that truck, reminds me of my 1988 K1500.

Nice! My grandparents bought their 2000 Chevy 2500 4x4 extended cab short box brand new. It was listed at $29,000 but after all the fees it came out to $32,000. It only has 94,000 miles. My mom liked theirs so much that a few years ago she bought a 2001 Chevy silverado 1500 extended cab short box 4x4 for $13,000. She now only has 92,000 miles on it. In 2021 when prices were going crazy my co-worker bought a 1999 chevy 1500 extended cab short box 4x4 with only 76,000 miles for $15,000 in mint condition. He was like this is way cheaper than paying $70,000 for a brand new one!

I know people that literally had theirs towed to the junk yard with good motor and transmissions because the rest of the vehicle was so badly corroded that it couldnt even be worked on. simple brake or suspension work became multi-day jobs because of the cutting and hacking and PB blasting that needed to be done to get bolts and parts separated.

Up until a few years ago, when I was starting to look into old vehicles I remember from early childhood, I did not know about the name change from C/K series to Silverado. I always just assumed the Silverado, as a standalone nameplate, dated back at least as far as the GMT400. It's especially weird when you realize that the GMC Sierra was the Sierra before the Silverado was the Silverado.

Something has seemed to change is the size. The new trucks feel so much bigger. But I looked it up and they're not really that much bigger.
    GM800
    wheelbase: 119-143.5
    length: 203.3-246.7
    width: 78.5

But I swear they feel at least 25% larger on the outside. You can barely reach over the thing to get to the dipstick or over the bedside to get things out. The GMT800 was much more accessible by comparison.

I wish the removable “midgate” was not unique to the Silverado EV (and discontinued models), as it seems like there is nothing preventing ICE trucks from implementing it and helps to mitigate the crew cabs having a smaller bed. Obviously, you aren’t filling it with mulch, but it sure makes hauling 10 foot pipes and poles easier on the rare (for most homeowners not using it professionally for construction) occasion that’s needed.
I can comfortably hang an 8’ board or plywood out the end of the tailgate, but 10’ makes me nervous when people pull up behind me, even when it’s flagged in orange.

On body on frame pickups the cab is separate from the bed, this mid-gate feature is typically on unibody vehicles.

The Avalanche was based on the Suburban which had a frame. Today it is wholly different, the SEV is a body on battery. The battery is the rigid structure which the body rides on and the bed is not separate from the cab. The chassis is the battery. I have seen my truck on a lift, that is a huge battery. So no removable “midgate” on ICE trucks is possible.

    • @aerynlovell4754
      @aerynlovell4754 Месяц назад +2

The Sidewinder feature could be useful off-road to maneuver around trees or rocks. I have seen some custom 4x4s that had rear wheel steering added to make it easier to get the truck positioned on the perfect line. The only thing I hate about the Sidewinder, and all features on modern vehicles, is the long animation sequence on the screen. I'm an impatient person so when I push a button I expect the system to turn on without all the visual garbage. I prefer toggle switches because when I want something turned on I flip it up and by looking at the position of the switch I can tell it's on. When I want it turned off I flick the switch down and it's off. There is no ridiculous visual sequence to waste my time. My favorite thing about toggle switches is that when they are turned off the vehicle computer can't automatically turn any of those systems on.

    • @jg8263

@jg8263 Just like the vast majority of ZR2 trucks (with dual lockers) will never go off-road. Maybe the second or third owner of a ZR2 will use it off-road, but I think they are the new Jeep. Over the years, I would see several Jeeps on the road with every off-road attachment like Jerry cans, shovel, high-lift jack, etc, but the paint was perfect, and there were no scratches on the rock sliders. People like to pose for pictures with their "hard core" 4x4s but never take them off-road.

Ive owned many Chevy trucks since my first truck. A 1980 Custom 1/2 ton. No power windows or door lock swing, nor was air conditioning even standard. 305 cu in (5.0 liter) that did pretty good on mileage etc. But back then if you lived in the Midwest even if you kept it in a garage the body would be rusted out before 100,000 miles. Fast forward through several more Chevys owned and the 2017 LT with 5.3 was a great truck until the transmission cooler thermostat apparently failed and led to imminent failure of the transmission at 150,000 miles. I could routinely get 25 mpg highway actual calculated at pump fillup. Unfortunately I had a very long trip planned that I needed a truck when the transmission was starting to act up. Couldn’t chance a breakdown so I opted to buy a 2024 Silverado LTZ with significant factory options making it MSRP around $70,000!!! I’m pretty disappointed in the truck overall. Some electronics are helpful but I think there’s a lot of bugs in many options. Very complicated and in my opinion a bigger distraction than hand holding a cell phone or other more common driver distractions. Yes heated steering wheel is nice but not really needed. I really wish it didn’t have electronic tailgate. A bunch of cameras around the vehicle are cute but for instance the bed view camera and other views obstructed with a shell. Heads up display is helpful especially when it projects turn by turn directions on the windshield . But it appears I can no longer display that feature not that either Sirius Radio On star has passed test trial. The new 2024 gets 2-3 mpg less than the 2017. Same engine but new one only has auto/start stop and not DFM. I don’t like the electronic shifter because if you ever break down, dead battery etc it’s difficult to get towed as I understand without dragging the truck onto a flatbed/rollback. Finally my biggest pet piece is why doesn’t a $70,000 truck have even a single 12 volt (old cigarette lighter style receptacle) I still have common things used for overlanding that need that power port. 12 volt beverage warmer, supplemental heated ice scraper, kids heated throw blanket, Emergency Air Compressor, hand held LED spotlight/trouble light, 12 volt refrigerator, plus others. Unfortunately due to the circumstances with needing a new truck quickly I didn’t know about many of these downfalls of such an expensive truck. Even with twin tube shocks it doesn’t ride as nice as the 2017 with about the same load rating and type of tire. Buyer beware. May be investing in a new Toyota Tundra if they ever get their act together on engine reliability again. Sorry GM after 45+ years of buying many new GM vehicles I’m done with GM unless you improve quality and stop cutting corners and overpricing. I diverged one time in 2013 and instead of a GM SUV I bought my wife a new 2013 Highlander and with 159,000 mi not a single problem…..ever! She’s not even interested in looking at a new vehicle because many mfgs are putting out junk!
