  • The Way You Make Your Bed & What It Reveals About You | A Monk's Perspective
Making your bed is important. As a Buddhist monk, one of the first things we are trained in is the importance of making our beds. The way one makes their bed will impact their habits. Our time in the bedroom makes ups 30% of our daily lives, so what we do in the bedroom will directly impact our behaviors outside of the bedroom. In this video, I give you 3 scenarios of how one makes their bed and how it translate to the type of habit the will cultivate. I hope this perspective from the buddhist monk lens will give you a different perspective into the importance of making your bed. I hope this helps. Enjoy! #monk #buddhism #mentalhealth #monks

I have found that an unmade bed leads to 'broken window syndrome'. This is where for example, a window gets broken in a neighbourhood and not fixed, the area seems less cared for. Then someone might drop some rubbish, someone else will do some graffiti, and so on.
As far as the bedroom goes, an unmade bedroom is the broken window. This may lead you to just drop things on the bed when you come in from your day, leave clothing on the floor, leave a dirty tea cup on the bedside table etc...This chaos then has a ripple effect on you home, your day and your life.
It is good to apply this idea to your whole home and tidy up after yourself. We've all been there, wondering, how did my home become so messy! For those struggling with health and weight, know that your choices for the first meal of the day also impact the rest of the day. The first unhealthy choice makes you feel bad, so you are less likely to have the energy to make a good food choice after that. Love yourself by having nourishing food for breakfast! I hope these ideas help someone :-)
Thank you Nick for a fantastic teaching!

So a way to look at it isnt your depreiving yourself of being you. Which is how some people will see it ( you arnt living a genuine self) but rather your shaping it from a lower negative mindset to a higher healthier mindset via the tasks you do.

I have spent a lifetime observing [with deep fascination] how a human's interior life projects itself outward into their home's interior landscape. Your home is You - reflecting a mirror of truth back to yourself. The untrained mind is unconscious of these subtle patterns because much of society has neglected the cultivation of nuanced mind-training & self-knowledge in favor of compulsory mind-conditioning schools that have had misplaced priorities. One may look at this is OCD/ overthinking/ overanalyzing... but I invite you to consider that we all have layers of filters that influence how we perceive what's in front of us & all around us.
Do you *see?* or do you subconsciously overlay & pre-categorize what you are looking at? Well, Who doesn't?
How much are you really *fully present* in each moment of your day? Or do you insulate yourself against what you cannot yet face about yourself & your own reality? No one judges you but your own self, who only wants you to develop in ripeness over your lifetime driving this human vessel. Your unconscious will always talk to you in symbolic language; it will use dirty clothes on the floor, dust everywhere, un-attended-to bed, in the most vulnerable sanctuary that you repose & repair in, to reflect to you your inner turmoil that needs your attention & full awareness. Put your own house in order, both inner + outer; get your priorities right...starting with developing a right relationship with self. House usually sorts itself out as a natural consequence of returning to being in balance.

All you say is profoundly true…. I had good parents and learned early in life to make my bed. I don’t think there’s ever been a single day in my life when I haven’t made my bed as soon as I get up. I agree with you that it is the foundation of a disciplined life. I make my bed, wash my face, brush my hair and get dressed, then meditation whilst the world is still waking up - sublime, and lays the foundation for a peace filled day….thank you again for your insight….blessings.

It makes totally sense now why "home tasks" are the first thing therapists told depressive people to do. I'm a depression survivor that didn't do their bed because of it so yes, I can tell this helps! When your surroundings are "healthy" your brain understands it as you're healthy too. It may take years to recover but it's seriously worth it.

I made my bed a safe space over the past three years. Before I used to suffer from depression, anxiety and a lot of other worries, especially during bedtime. I started getting out of bed each time I had negative thoughts. I’d go to my balcony and think there. Now three years later, I have trained myself to actually feel happy and rested in bed. I am allowed to have negative thoughts, just not in my bed. Part of that practice is making your bed❤️

I love to make my bed...I love changing the sheets & airing out my pillows, blanket, duvet ...I like choosing what colors to pick when I change my bedding...more often I choose white. Today I chose different shades of blue for bedding. It is so satisfying....luxurious; & I try not to hang out in my bedroom but keep it for my meditation/prayer time, & sleep. Cheers from Italy.

I believe in tasks, goal setting and mental tone.. However I was taught, sleep is a ritual. Before starting your day.. anything-a morning prayer is essential. After a gratitude prayer, I was trained by to "air out your bed", open windows, spray your linens with essential oils, sage, or burn incense in the room ( especially, when you have wild dreams). If I have nightmares, I change my sheets..as the bed "airs" out, you take care of your hygiene, and as you are dressing, or finished dressing to make your bed.(later in life I was encouraged not to put or store things under my bed.. Feng Shui) When finished always check your room, pick up and tidy. It really sets a tone for accomplishment. If you can do this..it helps your day routine..and mindsets. Thank you for your encouragement.

A quick tip to be able to make bed quickly: no need to put a lot of stuff there, you won't need them when you sleep. Simplify it. Perhaps use only 1 or 2 pillows and a blanket, that's it. No more items.
I used to have a lot of 'aesthetic decorations' on my bed. Like different kinds of throws, with many decorative pillows, in all different colours and sizes. It was such a pure hassle. Yes it's pretty to look at, but totally unnecessary because at the end of the day from all those pillows, I only use one 😥 Since then, I threw them all away and simply have two pillows and a blanket on my bed. Tidying it up literally only takes less than minute 😄

My child's 7th grade teacher taught the kids to make their bed right away when they got up so they would see a clean, nice space when they came back from the shower. My child then taught me to do it. I've been doing it ever since and some days it feels like the most powerful gesture I can make to bring order to my life. Making my bed has become a powerful symbol for me. What a great teacher. She may never know how her efforts to help the kids have helped so many others.

When I was much younger, I suffered from severe depression, and the therapist said that even if I could do nothing else that day, if I could get myself up and make my bed then I could say that I accomplished at least one thing. From that one step, I was able to progress and grow and overcome my depression. I have made my bed every day since, for the past 40 years, and it was my first step on the road to learning I can succeed at life. I am very grateful to you for your teaching, Nick. Yes, when you buy a new mattress there is usually manufacturers care guidelines included in the package. Over the night the mattress absorbs your sweat so you have to remove the blankets to let the mattress breathe and dry properly so you dont get mold and other issues. As such making your bed is counterproductive and in the long run it could be bad for your health and the longetivity of the mattress. Our parents and grandparents didnt know better so they thought us wrong.... the bed needs to air out.

I was raised from a young age to make my bed first. Mom always said, "It is the biggest thing in the room, make it look neat."
I am now 50, and though I have lived in typical American (USA) houses, my car, a tent from last frost to first frost, a hammock, and traveling the US East Coast staying in strangers' homes - I have very rarely not made my bed shortly after waking. Even during hospital stays, I get up as soon as physically possible and make the bed. I end up on top the covers with a homemade quilt on my lap, but that bed is made.
My bed is the single neatest thing in my life.
My art supplies and my creations (30+ types of art gear), my bookshelves, my plants and the extra stuff life seems to require (clothes, kitchen and bath things) ... mmm, I'm an artist. Everything is in a state of 'loosely organized' chaos 90% of the time - but at any given time something was just organized neatly.
Five times in my life I have reduced my total belongings to less than 200 items. I'm due to do that again. I want to anyway. But after 3 straight years of losing loved ones, I am on a different reducing my possessions journey. I'm still figuring it out.

I make my bed right after the bathroom, which is my first need. I comb my hair, dress myself, brush my teeth and feed my cat. I feel organized and it helps me think more clearly. When I return to my bed in the evening after a shower and turn down clean sheets and bedspread, I feel I can relax and meditate it a clean, quiet, comfortable nest I have lovingly prepared for myself. I wasn't always like this, especially when I was younger. I derive peace knowing all is well because I have cared for my needs and my families for the day. There's contentment. It's more difficult now as my health has declined and I can't clean as I once did, but I keep doing what I can everyday. Order has brought me ease of mind. Helped me think critically and take care of everyday needs. Wonderful teaching. Thank you 😊.

My type of person is not of the three: I always make my bed before I leave home in the morning -- I don't like an unmade bed. But when I make my bed depends on the morning. I need "my time" in the morning so I get up 1.5 hours before I have to be at work. I read, I plan, I write, when no one is awake but me. I love the morning hours -- they are meditative and contemplative for me.

I loved this video because I already new I tend to procastinate in the mornings, staying in bed for half an our with the clock ringing, and then having to hurry up for everything and making the bed in one minute and in any way. But what I loved of the video is that I could observe my day and see the habit of procastination beyond the morning moment, observing small behaviors that seemed meaningless but that were part of the pattern! So it showed me the path. It's been a week now that I'm changing it, waking up when the clock rings, just with the sunrise, appreciating it and meditating after breakfats without having to rush, and not only I feel so much better, but also much more in balance, as I'am changing the entire habit, all small behaviors. So, THANK YOU Nick

    Dear Bhante
Thanks for making me understand the importance of making bed. This simple daily core , may appear trivial, yet represents the general and overall attitude of a man towards living. A man making his bed just after getting up tends to be aware, patient and enterprising. A man not doing so tends to be lazy, fearful and procastinating. I myself was unaware of this simple observation for years. And during that period I was not up to the mark. Looking at bed making in this perspective changed my overall attitude towards life itself. I am experiencing a clearcut positive change in my thoughts and actions after I started making my bed immediately after waking up.
Dear Bhante, your teachings are simple clear and direct. They are helpful and healing.
    Many thanks. 🙏

Even when I came home after graduating from college, she would go into my room and make my bed, all the way up into my 30's, when I finally could afford to buy a condo. So now I hardly ever make my bed.
And I love my mother and late father, but do struggle with procrastination, perfectionism and a lot of insecurities. I think kids need their parents to patiently help them learn skills rather than doing most practical tasks for them, so that they start adulthood knowing they have skills.

I feel really grateful to you.
I was raised as a Christian, but 20 years ago, I chose Buddhism for my heart, body and soul. I try to practice alone, in my every day life. I still have a long way to be "pure", but I do my best and accept it 😊
I am a slow and contemplative person and I have been making my bed everyday fo 35 years now. I am very slow in the morning and need my time for various things in my routine. But I have always opened the window of my bedroom first thing while pulling the sheets, in Summer nor Winter. I need to bring some light, clean the air in the room and let the sheets become cold and refreshed.
And I pay attention to wash the sheets often and keep my bedroom clean, not dusty. And without too many things and distractions. Like in the feng shui principles.
    But I still procrastinate a lot...☺

I grew up with very much of a different perspective. My mother being French had very specific ideas about child-rearing. So I never learned as a child how to clean things or make my bed. She felt that that was her job and that I should be about the business of being a child. Now as an adult I have trained myself in many of the physical aspects of life. Specifically what I do with my bed every morning is based on a French idea which is that we always use a frame at the end of the bed take all of the bed clothes and flip them up onto the frame exposing the mattress and the bed sheet. This allows the mattress to breathe. If you have been sweating overnight this allows the sheet to dry off. I then proceed to do my morning ablutions break fast and so forth ultimately returning to the bedroom and tidying the bed clothes. If I were a person who needed to go to work I would place this as the last thing I do before I leave. I also have developed a method of flipping all of the bed clothes quite rapidly so I do not have an excuse not to do it. Wonderful conversations!

Haha I'm definitely person 1. Love a slow morning. Waking up without an alarm, daydreaming & doing morning pages, mindfully making my bed & enjoying breakfast, watching the sun light up my garden & the mountains in the distance. I do procrastinate sometimes, but my morning routine makes me happy and helps me unleash my creativity. Maybe I move slower than person 2, but that's okay. 😌 I've learned not to leave things until last minute because it only makes me feel rushed and anxious, so working on things piece by piece every day is better.

Perhaps this isn’t as straight forward as one would think...but I feel like I’m a little bit of all of these rolled into one. In the past I made my bed every day- (type 1)-mostly because I found it more enjoyable/restful to climb back into at night with it being neat and tidy. For some unknown reason I just fell out of that habit and drew the conclusion that it’s mostly a waste of time (type 3)... but I am far from careless at work. My change in bed making habits did nothing to effect my work. I am a procrastinator (type1) when it comes to big decisions/changes, but when it comes to things like deadlines I tend to take the bull by the horns and turn my work in early to avoid stress (type2). However, it is worth noting that I have been struggling recently with an inability to stay focused, and have struggled with making decisions and choices my entire life-seemingly regardless of my bed making habits. I did just recently receive a promotion at work...so I don’t really see how the correlations in this video are totally accurate in real life for me personally. I’ve watched several of your videos and liked them but this one kinda left me scratching my head. I’m willing to give making my bed another shot for a couple of months just to see if anything happens or comes of it, but I’m not seeing the validity at this point. Any thoughts?

    • @nickkeomahavong01

Yes just experiment and see how it goes. But making the bed isn't just about work or big decisions, I think they impact the qualities of our mind, our refinement. So it may be bleed out through other areas. But like I said just experiment with it :-)

I would do 3 weeks of making my bed and 3 weeks of not making my bed, while observing closely the quality of my thoughts when I wake up and when I go to sleep. Really take the time to observe your emotional stability/ state, the pattern of thought that goes on in your head and your general mood. Personally I find it refreshing and easier to focus on my tasks after. Since I've already accomplished one thing today, I feel more enticed to accomplish other things. And when I go to sleep a fresh bed is like a cloud, that feeling alone was enough to make me wanna do my bed everyday lol

    • @edzardpiltz6348

I would think the idea of wasting time by doing something nice for yourself like making the bed you can enjoy coming back and getting into at night, as an unexamined erroneous assumption that just cultivates the feeling of pressure and shortage of time that keeps on building up over the years and tents to create this latent feeling of unease and restlessness that is always there like a constant humming that slowly drives you mad without you even realizing it because after a while it doesn't raise above the threshold of your conscious awareness anymore. And this will most definitely affecte ones life in many ways without one even realizing it. Just my two cents... 🙂🙏

There were many in my barracks during basic training that did not understand the purpose of imposing such a great demand on precision in making one's bed every morning. The ones who made it through assignments in the more hellish parts of Iraq and Afghanistan were the ones who got it. Training ones mind to focus on small, simple, and seemingly mundane acts is the start of the path towards developing a profound understanding of self, then life, then existence. The clarity that brings creates wellsprings of confidence and composure. Exactly the attributes necessary to survive what many would consider unsurvivable conditions.
But I had it easier. I had a father, a WW2 vet, who taught me much without having say much.
Plus, I do love finding a clean and organized bed with fresh sheets a comfort at the end of a grueling day.
