Just dropping in to say thanks again for the canning videos! I canned with my grandmothers, eons ago, and am now after 40+ years, reviving my skills. In the last month, I've put up chicken, chicken bone broth, vegetable broth, carrots, potatoes, and this weekend, added pork. My favorite part was needing another set of shelves for the pantry! Husbeast grumbled (just a little) about the cost of the Presto 23 quart canner. He opened a jar of carrots today and raved about how much better they tasted than the "store canned crap"!
I searched for this hoping I would find a trusted person canning ham and beans. I’m new to canning and want to can stuff like this for my husband. He’s a shift worker and it’s hard to put together a dinner meal at noon. Miss Lori at Whippoorwill Holler makes beans with cornbread dumplings and they look good.
I agree with the forjars lids I have had two failures both my fault I grew up off grid in the UP in Ladoga Michigan by Kiva we depended on our canned vegetables and meat
I’m PA Dutch and dumplings in ham and bean soup is common here in eastern PA. When I make a ham I cook it in the oven with water in the pan. After we eat and I cut off most of the meat for leftovers I freeze the bone and broth that’s in the pan. When I make my soup I simmer the broth and bone with water till the meat falls off the bone. I add navy beans and cook them till done and at the end I make what we call drop dumplings. I mix flour, eggs, water and salt till I have a wet sticky dough then I drop clumps of the dough in the hot soup when they float they are done.
I was 1 of 9 so yes we grew up eating a lot of soups. When i was about 56 my older sister told me that we ate this because we were poor!!! Well I never thought of us as being poor. My parents canned every thing. Most food was done open kettle, tho they did also use a pressure cooker in after I had moved out. My Father gave me the pressure canner as he felt I would some day use it. This is my first year using it. It makes me think of all my parent's did to feed our family. I sure do miss them. Also I am the only one of my siblings. that preserve food. @Suttondaze you have taught me to have courage and I can't Thank you enough for all you have taught me, you are a BLESSING!!
I can a three bean soup. I have made this soup for to many years to count! I am in the “love bean soup” camp! We had beans and cornbread for dinner at least once a week while I was growing up. So good!
I made this last January after downloading and reading the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning. I think when we open up the soup we will also open a jar of beans to stretch the soup and make it more filling because my normal bean soup is a lot thicker than this ended up. My mom always made fried bread dough to go with our bean soup.
My mom too! My brother and I often talk about how great it was when we knew mom was baking...that meant we were having fried dough with navy beans and ham. Love the memory.
Lisa I live in the south.. SC to be exact and we use ham hocks to season our collard greens. Especially at new year’s also either ham or fat back for the black eyed peas that go with them . Yummy 🤤
We lived in Virginia while we had our 3 sons. My next door neighbor was true southern gal. She made me collards with fat back or seasoning meat while I was pregnant. I couldn't get enough they were so good. I'm planting collards this year!
2+ years later- WE NEED A DUMPLING VIDEO! And yes..... pull one of these jars from the pantry shelf and make some of that wonderful ham, bean and dumpling soup.! Love and Hugs... Julie
Parents were from Michigan and they loved bean soup. I couldn't stand eating it for some reason. I'd love to try canning ham, onions, and potatoes to make a potato soup base, but I thought it was forbidden. I'm very glad to learn that it can be done.
I never was fond of ham & beans soup until we ran out of pinto beans & had to sub Great Northern beans. I think the flavor is soooo much better that I look forward to em & will even go back for seconds!
I bought this knife back in May and have been having fun using it ever since, it’s the sharpest knife in my kitchen at the moment. Thanks Leisa for the recommendation. BTW still loving 🥰 the Four Jar Lids. I appreciate you and all that you do and your HONESTY!!! Be Blessed, - Mrs. Wallace

Received 10lbs pinto beans and have ham from Christmas ( frozen), going to can it up this week. Hubby loves taking for lunch. Definitely want that knife
I'm making and canning a version of this bean soup today. I'm using pinto beans I soaked overnight, pieces of uncured bacon and no carrots. I've canned beans and I've canned tested soup recipes before but this will be my first time trying to can my own version of bean soup. Thanks for showing how easily it can be done!
Nice, LEISA! I need to get ahold of some ham hocks, maybe from the local butcher...I really like that you're using the Cannelloni beans, they're really good tasting beans. I need this soup for the pantry. I got another FORJARS order, so thanks again for your discount code. And thanks for this video...

You made my laugh when you were raking about hubby. I love ham and bean soup. We eat it with a slice of toasted homemade bread. We're going to put this one up next weekend. Thanks for the idea.
I grew up with iron skillet baked corn bread. Mom used less batter and made them about 1" thick, put a slab in each bowl, and filled the bowls to the brim with bean and ham soup! I can still taste it almost 70 yars later! Good stuff
My mom always used ham hocks to make ham and beans. I have a hard time finding them here in Missouri. And I love ham and beans and cornbread. Oddly, my southern husband does not like either so I make them in small batches just for me!!
I'm in Missouri too & don't have any trouble finding smoked ham hocks at Walmart. Was just looking at some this afternoon! Ps: try a different type of bean than you usually use. I grew up on it made with pinto beans & wasn't a fan. Then 1 day we were out of pintos & substituted Great Northern beans & now I won't use anything but GNs, the flavor really is that much better!
