5 years retired now and I knew when I started at 61 I would not lack for things to do. My employer of 35 years (Alberta Health Services) would have retirement seminars for staff. One thing I learned… take your vacation, it’s practice retirement. AHS would not let staff accumulate vacation (good on them). There’s so much to do in retirement, volunteer, travel, time with family, time to cook better, less processed meals. Everyday I wake up and I’m grateful for this part of my life that I earned.

I retired (many years ago) on a Friday and on the Monday I was in the local hospital as a volunteer. Time to give back to my community! The added bonus is the social aspect, which many retirees miss.
Another comment...forget trying to sell your "stuff", as you will no doubt be disappointed at how little cash you will get from the amount of work you have to put into trying to sell it. DONATE it to local charities - again, giving back to your community and effectively clearing out your "stuff" (which - let's face it - no one else will value as much you did).
I love being retired, and am never bored. Don't let retirement disappoint you - have a plan, but also go with the flow. ENJOY.

It's true, your valued items are just someone else's junk when it comes to selling it. There is a whole psychology behind why something is we own is worth more to us than to anyone else, even if we got it for free. It's an interesting topic but one to be aware of when you are trying to sell something.

So very true!! Believe me, NO ONE wants the silver tea set or the Royal Doulton figurines any more. I ended up taking mine to Value Village Charity Shop, and I think they ended up being sold as a job lot for pittance. But at least they no longer clutter my cabinets and I don't need to dust and polish them. @@ddavidson5

Went through thousands of slides and scanned them to files on the computer where they could be shared. Bought the machine at my London Drugs store and sold it afterwards. My tip is that when I was looking at pictures of family vacations, or in particular vacations of my parents, discard the photograghs with no relatives in them. Scenery photos are not particularly worth keeping unless you were the one taking the picture or they have historical significance. That can ease the process significantly.

Retired 4 years, just sold the house and moving to an apartment. A whole basement of furniture and storage crates. 9 trips to Goodwill, a U-Haul truck took furniture to younger relatives, Christmas tree and decorations to Goodwill, anything left goes to “Got Junk” who will give away good furniture to the needy. Feels great to get rid of old clothes, shoes, suits to those who need it. Making enough from the house, no need to sell, just give it away. The relief feels great, pictures are last but will be sorted or given out to family soon. We are keeping only what we need, no emotion to old stuff that may represent an old memory but never used, dump it. If anything happens to us, we leave nothing left for our kids to sort out but our existing furniture. Now we can lock the door and travel.

This is something that I didn't have the slightest issue with although 10 years before I retired it might have been a different story.
I got to about 50 yo and as I started seeing people around me get sick or dying and decided that working until I died wasn't for me. I stopped doing overtime unless absolutely necessary and thought more about what I wanted to do when working ended.
Fortunately the decision to stop the job I had been in for over 15 years was made for me when the site was closed so I didn't even have to question whether I had made the "right" decision. I could have gone back to work, and had some previous workmates try to get me to go back, but I couldn't bring myself to do it even if it meant more shiny toys.
I don't even have set goals of what I want to do or when and just make it up as I go along or when I feel like it. Drives my wife a bit nuts but after decades of having to get up at a set time and work to timetables/schedules I'm loving it.
My "job" now is to enjoy whatever time I have left and I can do as little or as much as I like on a daily basis.
Today I fried up some homegrown fresh Beans with some home grown Garlic, home grown Cherry Tomatoes, Chilli Powder and some leftover Ham we had.
Tasted amazing, cost very little and also gave a nice feeling of satisfaction from using what we have grown.
Sure beat spending 30 bucks on some crap takeaway.

Downsize? Well we did the opposite and moved from a 685sq ft bungalow in Vancouver to a 2400sq ft house on Vancouver Island. I bought my wife a Roland keyboard so she could start playing piano again. I always wanted to learn to play guitar, so I bought one from a music store in a nearby town and took lessons. Now I have 3 acoustic guitars and 1 electric. Oh plus on a recent trip to Greece I bought a Bouzouki, so I am learning to play that. Learning and playing music keeps the brain challenged and can spend hours doing it. Last thing is like to cook/bake so I experiment with different foods, middle eastern, greek, indian, french, for baking I do baguettes, croissant, (cookies for my wife). We also spend a lot of time gardening and sea kayaking. Have to admit not every day is exciting but we keep busy.

After my Dad died we gathered photos of his life from birth to about age 25. All the photos were in B&W. We made a coffee table book and gave it each of my Dad’s grandchildren. The grandchildren, without exception, said “..this is the best Christmas present ever”. It brought each of the 5 grandchildren to tears.

Absolutely right on. Decluttering and converting possessions to a smaller footprint (like your digitizing project) has been a project for me over the past year and it feels really good, especially when others can make use of the things you no longer need. Have been retired for 10 years (wow, that's hard for me to believe) and initially took a deep dive into photography myself, returning to community college for courses when I first retired, then photography clubs and events since. Now I help coach others informally and even give the occasional presentation. I'm as busy as I want to be. I love being able to plan my day as I wish to (and changing my mind if another idea comes up!). Retirement for me has been the best time of my life, but the only reason it was so was because I had a plan for my retirement - not just a financial plan - an activity plan. A bit more travel will be in the mix next year.

Jesus wants you to to cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Only by repenting of sin and trusting in Jesus to guide your life are you spiritually safe for all eternity. Hey T&N, another great video and timely topic. Great advice I received was, "don't retire FROM something, retire TO something". People should have a plan before retiring.
I got bored and got a part time job at Home Depot. As an "old guy" I'm amazed at how much fun it is helping 'youngin's' do thier DIY projects. It's not about the $, it really helps the brain as well. And working with young people keeps you young too.
Keep up the good work and again, LOVE the salutation...feels like you're my uncle Tom saying "'till we meet again".

I love being retired and after 10 years have still not found time to be bored. I have done most of your suggestions. All the pictures and family histories have been digitalized and shared. A great project I have done was to write and illustrate a family cookbook which I share to friends and family in pdf format. I contacted cousins and aunts and requested they send me a favourite family recipe and the reason they liked it. I then typed it up, standardized the measurements and drew an picture of the finished dish - very rewarding project for all. Although I have drastically downsized I am still worked on getting rid of piles of totes.

My husband is re-reading his books. Those which inspire or intrigue hm go back on the shelf, those that don't go on the community bookshelf. I can honestly say 95% leave the building. Throwing out the photo albums is heartbreaking. I remove the photos and have made envelopes. Who ever is in the photo gets the 'paper' copy. I've sent a few thickish envelopes and they are well received. Often the person(s) in the photo didn't have a copy r have fond memories of who ever is in the photo or of the event captured. We run out of time each week Norm and Tina. No way will we ever be bored. Roll on our freedom. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿

My dad passed at aged 95 in Dec of /21. I was his executor and found it very interesting to go through his pictures. He never really talked about his homeland that he left in /51 (England), or really told us why he left. Going through his photo albums, I found old pictures of him, as a child of 3, and the servants. The family had both men and women servants from when they lived in Africa while his father was there with the military. I just wish I had seen these pictures while he was alive and we could have talked about them.

We also have changed to a tabletop Christmas tree! My mother is 88 years old and decorating a large tree became too much for her and it was her favorite activity of the Season that she would not let me help her with! With the table she can set a little decorations and candles around the tree and we also light a menorah because my dad was jewish. We downsized into early retirement at 51 and 53 next month. Getting rid of all that crap was liberating. It also means if we need to return to Canada to make some money we don’t have a bunch of junk with us.
Retire overseas. Retiring in Canada is a financial disaster.
Doing all the suggested things post retirement is a waste imho. Do all that work in the year leading up to it.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement we would be curious as to where in Canada you are from.
      The reality is this;
Cost of living is through the roof.
Rent or real estate is insane.
Healthcare might be covered but is hard to access and slow.
The weather - for people retiring, sucks.
So can you really explain to us how Canada is good to retire? I'm genuinely curious as a Canadian Citizen.
I will take my $52k a year in tax free dividend income and live abroad... but why on earth would someone take Canada?
      Like for real.

Funny thing though we have been retired for over 10 years now and we pulled out our old music albums (vinyl) and started listening to them again. Hi you giys. Looking super sharp today, Tina and Norm! Great ideas indeed. I'm 3 years retred next week and the time has flown!!! I do help look after my 90 year old dad but he's no trouble. I'm never bored. I read and listen to books on Audible, watch movies on Netflix, swim in the sea, a few times a week, year-round. Going to lunch and the cinema alone and with friends and family, supporting my local rugby team, studying French and travelling, keep me busy!!! I'm in the middle of a clearout before Christmas and it's really amazing what stuff I thought I needed, and don't! Let's just say, the recycling station and the local charity shops are doing well by me lately. Am lucky to have family nearby, too, so that's great. Really enjoy watching your videos. I look forward to catching up with you every week. 😊

One Foot in the Grave. All this digitizing and decluttering is well and good, but my idea of retirement is to explore new territory rather than live in the past. I'm afraid I'm guilty of accumulating even more clutter in retirement. I just recently bought an Italian espresso machine and am contemplating getting into coffee roasting. The espresso machine was expensive and something I would never have dreamed of purchasing prior to retirement. It's a new interest to pursue before we take off on our next trip.

Thanks for the advice - all good things for someone else, maybe? I retired from full time work 7 years ago at the age of 62. I have been fortunate enough to do part time consulting (engineering) work where I can pick and choose the projects that I want. I have also been doing a fair amount of traveling, both with organized tour groups, and more preferably by RV. I am considering hanging it up early next year, but am not entirely committed to it. The thought of sitting around recording old music or digitizing old photos makes me shudder. If I want to keep my mind sharp (as Norm suggests) I would rather solve a few differential equations or quadratic equations (by hand with a calculator), than squint at a bunch old photos. If I really got motivated, I would rather write a book, than read a book. To each his own.... but keep on doing what you two are doing, because you are providing the value of your knowledge and past experiences to help others at this stage of life.

And, I found when getting rid of things, I snapped photos of things I wanted to remember. Being single, I live in a high-rise studio condo and travel quite a bit. We continue to enjoy your videos and topics, Tina and Norm. Thank you. In this latest one, you mention digitizing all of your in-storage photos, and then disposing of the photos. That is one of the much-delayed tasks that we have on our list. However, we’ve wondered more than once: What does “getting rid of” the old photos mean? Throw them out, cast into a bonfire, somehow (securely) recycle them? It does become a thorny question. What are your thoughts about what you will do to dispose of your old photos, post-digitization?

Hi Norm and Tina. We've begun the downsize here. We clean out the wardrobes when the seasons change. If we have not worn it in a years time, we get rid of it. So We wash and fold everything and leave all the clothing for people in our building, (down in the vestibule going to the garage and trash dump) since we have a large immigrant and student population, who might need something they don't have. I've tried the online selling stream, and people tend to only want to nickel and dime me. They won't pay what a piece of clothing is worth or what I paid for it. This past change over, I just bagged and trashed everything, because I wasn't going to go through uploading all that crap to a website for sale. We have "totes" too. They are sitting on the balcony right now, (which we don't ever use). And recently, I've begun the hunt for a new home to live in for next summer, before the Quebec moving date of July 1st, (yep, Canada Day) I have a ton of books I want to get rid of as well, but there aren't any book buy back shops in Montreal any longer. And when there were, I could never make a trade on my collections, UGH!! I have a record player, too, and a few records. But all of that music is already digitized on my I tunes player. Christmas is still a big deal for my husband so getting rid of our tree is a non-starter. Happy Christmas !!

I was thinking this might be the last big Christmas tree. My kids are 20 and 22 and I'm 61. We all agree that we can enjoy Christmas w/o a big tree. // I'm going to share the info on Photomyne. This summer I used my phone to take photos of one of my mom's albums. So tedious. My cousin Martin in the UK has promised to do something similar. His mum passed away recently. It might be easier to tackle future projects with Photomyne? I have a few boxes of photos and slides and some negatives that sit under a console table behind my sofa. My #1 project once I slow down at work or retire soon. THANKS!

I bought a record player to transfer music from records to digital and after I did about 10 of 500 something happened to the software and everything after was distorted so I put it aside until I reinstall the software.
I also ripped about 3500 songs from my CD’s into my iTunes and my phone, but when I got a new phone all the music was wiped out except for two albums I had bought from Apple. I hadn’t connected to iTunes in years and can’t find it now and my old computer has stopped working so all that music only remains on an old iPod that doesn’t have internet.
I recommend saving music and photos on a couple storage devices like hard drives or USB/SD cards that could be plugged into different computers. I have all my old CD’s in boxes in the basement for the last 15 years, so they can be copied again.
I might be able to save time as I have seen gizmos to recover old hard drives and I had saved the old hard drives when I threw away old computers.
I have my photos on Google and Amazon and my iPhone, but I still have the pictures and negatives in a couple boxes.
I’ll probably keep the physical photos and sell the records and CD’s once I copy them again.

So we take a yearly separate holiday with friends of family. Also do a different hobby to get used to being alone. However as we all know, nobody really knows what the future holds. But can we survive without each other is important? My own Mum outlived my Dad by 30 years. She was lonely for a long time. Then she took up bridge which was a life saver for her.

@ThisIsOurRetirement My comment wasn't based on my own circumstances but rather upon that of many I know. As for myself, I always lived within my means. Every penny went directly into a saving account upon which cheques could be written. Using the SA was not the best or wisest financial plan, but it helped me survive through being right-sized, down-sized, made redundant, horizontally loaded and having my employment shipped offshore to India/ China/ Mexico, etc. All this despite the fact that I am a well-educated person. The common belief is that the jobs of only blue-collar workers were trashed, but that's not true.

Another way to add purpose in retirement is to volunteer with a local service club. There you will find friendships while making a difference in the lives of others. 😊

As soon as I stop working my rear end off, the first thing I’m going to do upon retirement is to find a spouse!
