We've experienced the pitfalls of helping our adult children financially. As parents, we always want to take away their pain and eliminate their problems by throwing cash at them. It's really hard to convince ourselves that it's actually harming them by not allowing them to figure out solutions to the problems they create.

The problem with that is that my parents didn't help me when I REALLY needed it. I think parents with money (my parents would travel once a month) should ensure that their children have health insurance, at the minimum. There was a lot of resentment between us and now they are old and wonder why their children and other family members have abandoned them. That is the worst thing for elderly people. I don't think of them as family anymore and as far as I'm concerned, they're already dead.

I worked in the office of a care home for many years and came to the conclusion that if you make decisions ahead, you have choices. If you wait until a crisis, you don't have choices. We are 60 & 65 and are looking very seriously at downsizing (no date decided yet) because of your videos. We had our children at a young age but they are waiting longer to have theirs. We had hoped to enjoy grandchildren in our current property that has a pool and lovely yard but you have really given us a whole new perspective that we have taken to heart.
We definitely would like to own that book!👍
Thank you for all the work you do putting together thought provoking and fun videos.

My in-laws refuse to sell their house. They are so frail that they can't climb the stairs and have fallen several times trying to get into the house. Like you mentioned with your parents, now my in-laws are past the age of selling the house. It's a terrible thing to witness.

My husband and I sold our home here in the US and are downsizing from 4200 sq ft to a 1400 sq ft apartment. Whew! What a process it has been and I had tremendous difficulty with anxiety after we made the decision and it became real. We were both surprised at how emotionally fragile I became and I sought a therapist (at my daughter’s suggestion) and started taking an anti-anxiety medication. Now, I a, feeling better and the more we sell and give away, the freer we feel.
Your comment about waiting too late to make such a move is so true. I am 70. If we had waited a few more years, my husband would not have been able to blast me out of this place and it would take our children months to clear out this home.

The money we got from selling our house, conservatively invested, more than pays the rent. Using round figures if you sell your house for 500,000 and get 4% return on the money that gives you 20,000 a year towards the rent. Plus you don't have property taxes, repairs and all the other costs associated with owning a house.
On the other hand house prices have increased by a lot more so we couldn't get back into the housing market and a house gives more security against inflationary rent increases and market downturns. You have to be prepared to move from a rental if the landlord so wishes and that could be difficult and traumatic if you are frail.

Great points Tina and Norm. My mom moved to a 55+ campus seven years ago after my dad passed. They definitely stayed in their large home too long, into their early eighties. She was in an independent living unit for a few years then assisted living for a year and a half. She thought she wouldn’t like downsizing but ended up loving her life there even after moving into a small assisted living apartment. The campus was beautiful, people and staff were friendly and there were many activities to chose from as well as shopping and restaurants. She passed away recently and I have learned the wisdom of downsizing as one ages.

When he died, his widow was in a comfortable situation that she could manage. In terms of decision making, I agree that as we age we can lose some insight. Mom lived in same house for 50 years. She has things stuffed everywhere dating back to the 50s. Silly junky things. Even though I had been helping her clean out & organize over past 7-8 years, there was/is still a ton of junk. Please encourage people to give treasured items away before they die, keep clutter to a minimum, and don't keep stuff you no longer need or use.

It is so true as you age you need your money. With high inflation here in Ireland we have noticed our pensions not stretching as far. So you have to be careful with your savings. We already lost a lot on Bank shares before we retired so it has made us cautious. We have no children but were always decent to nieces and nephews now adults. But we only give Christmas gifts now and there are two great nephews which we love buying items for. A car seat is now around 300 euro. But cheques for 1,000 euro, those days are well and truly gone. In fact, one nephew is extremely decent to us which we greatly appreciate.

I have an elderly neighbor who owns a seasonal second home next door to my second home. It's difficult in that town to find anyone in any contractor or service based line of work that is reliable or isn't part of the "underground economy". It's all "cash".. So when I cut my grass, I cut her grass, when I snowblow my sidewalk and driveway I do hers etc. While I'm a tad bit younger than both of you, I'm kinda sorta thinking about future moves myself and looking at senior type apartment towers.(there's a long waiting list).Since home ownership especially when the home next door or across the street sells , possibly goes rental instead of owner occupied and the new neighbors turn out to be nightmarish , with barking dogs all day, loud music and possibly dealing drugs you look at different living options very quickly.

Love you two; you are so funny. I remember my dad, quite a car guy, fixed up and gave one of my uncles and one of my cousins each a nice looking car. The guys kept the cars for a short time and traded them in on big, fast clunkers. Dad was so angry. I didn't get a car, because parents divorced ... I think of your friend in this light and wonder if he might want to talk to his granddaughter about his pride and joy. She might not view the car as such and might be happier with something else that he could buy for her, allowing him to keep the car he loves. Husband and I are older than you and we have chosen to continue living in a house. We purchased a much newer and more accessible house than the one we raised the kids in. Our thinking is that we own it, it is paid for, and no one can be the pain in the neck neighbor sharing a wall and no one can raise our rent (although taxes do go up) and no one can evict us. Two schools of thought, neither wrong. Thanks for a great video.

Been considering a move to a condo for a while. My paid for house is small but old and falling apart. Story #3 is most important. Always look after ourselves first and foremost. Can't rely on family to look after you and reciprocate the good deed you did for helping them out financially. I know someone, a single mom who contributed her entire life savings to help her only child to buy his first condo. That son did not hesitate to kick her out to the street after she encountered conflicts with his lazy, stay-at-home girl friend who sleeps and smokes all day long.

I’m so grateful we downsized from an acreage property in Sydney to an apartment in Melbourne by the sea, in our early 60’s. If either one passes the other one can easily adjust to the apartment that is already ‘home’. We can walk to every thing we need, it’s wonderful.
I agree totally Re not continuing helping adult kids. I get tempted at times but realise our $$ won’t replenish and they need to make adjustments to their ‘lifestyle’ to cope better financially. It is good for them to learn that they don’t ‘need it all’ now!!

Having moved numerous elderly relatives who were in denial about their abilities left it too late, this is top of mind. Side note: Tires need to be replaced every 6 years. The rubber begins to break down ("dry rot") and cracking starts in the sidewalls. All tires have a date of manufacturing date code - more info by googling.

My advice is when you give something treasured as a gift, don’t expect the receiver to have the same attachment. My 80+ dad gave a truck to my son who liked the gift but hated driving a big truck, paying a lot in gas and it did not fit into his building parking. Most of all, my son was busy with school and work and although he maintained the truck well it was not washed and waxed weekly like grandpa had. Most of all, my son wanted “his own” car, not driving grandpas pride and joy. Plus, to some people (my son as an example) a car or a house is NOT an extension of your identity, to others it is a tool, and you swap out tools as you need them to suit needs- especially when you are building your life and still forming that identity versus having a strong identity.

We are in a one floor house ! We made fun about scooting through this house in a wheelchair one day and thirty years later the time is almost here as the legs problem keeps getting worse ! I think I mite switch with my kids two bedroom two bathroom apartment and they take the house as my daughter loves the house so much ! She is our only child and In a short time I feel , we will have to make that decision for her , husband and two kids and our selves ! It will be a huge adjustment but at least we have that to consider ! They would just have to pay their mortgage to their bank until the apartment is payed for ! I will not contribute to that ! We helped them set it up with down payments on both side of their family! It is so hard to own a piece of real estate in Vancouver that if you like you child to be around in your life , you must try to help them and luckily we could do that ! The older you get the less money we spend ! We did only do one contribution when they bought their place and now it’s up to them . But the grand kids , they gets less too with spending money on them ! No more shopping with grandma as I can’t stand up for long ! Well for everyone it’s a different situation of course and we hope we get to stay a little longer in the house as husband loves to garden . But on the long whole , it looks that that plan mite have to become a reality one day if life permits us and as we get older ! How kind of the lady to send you the book ! And too bad it got to sit at your post box 8 months ! Let’s be unnest , you could of been on perfect weight for the sumner Norm and Tina ha ha just kidding ! Well I think that both of you are perfect already and at a older age don’t do any drastic dieting as things mite trigger ! Thank you for being here for us to compare and exchange stories! The knowing when to move is a tough one. We have been in our house 36 years, we moved here when our oldest daughter was 4 and our youngest had just turned 2 the month before. At 1,200 sq ft (111 sq metres) it's not a large house but has suited us for all these years though we did big reno 15 years ago so it was in tip top shape for our retirement. Now our grandchildren, 8, 6 and 1, come regularly to visit us at the same house their mothers grew up in. We both turn 70 this year and logically, in our minds, we know a move is coming in the next few years (to a condo maybe?) but it is daunting to think about actually moving. Honestly, I don't know how we'll finally decide it's time to move. Perhaps it's like knowing when to retire, one day you just know.

When we turned 70 we sold our house and moved to a beautiful adult community..still bought a new house, but facilities for grass cutting and snow clearing are readily available. About two years before we moved, we started getting rid of 'stuff' that we didn't need anymore, and really started emptying and decluttering our house, but we did it gradually and by the time we made our decision to move, it was so much easier...it is never too early to start the process...

@@annekennedy8127after seeing this video, among others and just general thoughts, my wife and I had a good discussion about when to move. Current thinking is to move within the next 5 years, it will still be hard to leave the home we will have owned and loved for 40 years by then. We are only the 3rd owners of this 1958 house, it's a very stable neighbourhood we live in. When we moved in all those years ago almost all our neighbours on the street were still original owners, the woman next door, in her 90s now, is in fact an original owner. You don't see that much anymore.

    • @ddavidson5
      @ddavidson5 Год назад

@@annekennedy8127 An update... We've been kicking around what to do knowing it was getting nearer to the time we should move but I have to say we were really unsure after going on 40 years in our current home. After this discussion, and on some other blogs I follow and participate on, we understood that for sure staying in your house too long can be a problem and we were getting to that point. We started looking at condos shortly after this video was posted and we quickly narrowed down what sort of condo we wanted and where. I am happy to say we have an accepted offer on an adult condo building about 2km from where we live now and our house goes up for sale next week. The cost of buying the condo is about 30% lower than what the real estate people valued our house at so even after expenses there should be cash in the bank at the end of the move. It's not even really a downsize as the condo square footage is about the same as our house. It's the right thing to do.

Remember you are the voice of people who live in a country that has ‘rent control’. Your experience of not owning your own home is very different in Canada to most other countries. In N Z the IRD definition of poverty is paying rent in old age. I guess that finding an apartment that is in a larger more stable building is important. When I think of renting, my first thought is that of the dumpy low cost apartment that we stayed at trying to save up a down payment for a house back in the 80's. It was a 5 family house with the landlord living on the first floor and their adult daughter with her family on the 3rd. We and another couple had apartments on the 2nd floor. There was also a small studio apartment on the 1st floor. These landlords were like slum lords! Half the time I'd come home filthy from work to find that the water or hot water wasn't working. Being a tradesman myself I would offer to repair what it needed if they just paid for or obtained the parts. They always refused and the old guy who owned it would tinker around for days before it was patched. Luckily I had family in the next town where I could go to shower! It was a nightmare living as a tenant this way and the 80's were a housing bubble in the US. I finally found a place that needed a bit of work but gave me the chance to start. I put a lot of work into the place but it's my own. After renting under those conditions, I dread the thought of being a tenant again! It sounds like you have found a place that wouldn't present the problems that I did. After 36 years I'm starting to lose the enthusiasm of being a homeowner though I do prefer not to nave neighbors too close! 😊

I like this style of video and they are all good points you brought up. Not only are you doing your children a favour by not giving them money because they learn to be financially responsible earlier but you’re left with less yourselves and they may need to turn around and provide for you financially down the track. In our case it is also our Dads that are against the idea of downsizing for various reasons even though our Mums are happy with the idea. I would say enjoy the rest of your weekend but when you’re retired every day is a weekend 😊

As relatively new retirees we love enjoying our first coffee of the day in bed and listening to your channel. As always you have sage advice which often follows our own line of thinking.👍

Such relevant and appropriate points. Strategic planning and thinking will diminish with age, which is to be expected. Also losing the impetus to move home when you really should. Recognising this earlier in retirement should help you plan for that future. Thanks for raising such great points.
