WOW MIKE! The original box with dos 6.2 floppy discs! Oh man I remember how slow this ran on my Nans x386 lol. Totally agree too, that box cover is my fave of all time also.
+Impavide Yeah, I'm old haha. I still have that. I got the CD version later but I lost it. I actually played more Doom II: Hell on Earth as a teen. The sequel is my favorite. - Mike
Armageddon3035 I sure am. I won't be buying it any time soon since I'm in the process of moving from Oklahoma to California, but I'll buy a copy one day I assure you.
I used to play Doom on PC and I would roll backwards away from the monitor in my office chair while trying to dodge the fireballs the brown monsters shoot. My Dad would laugh that I was that into the game that I would physically try to dodge them.
One of my favourite videogame memories as a kid was coming home from school on a Friday, booting up Doom II, turning down the music and turning up the sound effects and just blasting "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette and just going to town on monsters until the sun went down.
James nailed it when he was talking about the soundtrack. 20 years later, I will still occasionally catch myself singing songs subconsciously from Doom and Doom2 when I am walking around the house. Refueling Base is one of my favorite game tracks of all time. Great episode!
Something I don't hear people mention is the fact that Doom used a skybox. That blew my mind back in the day. On the level in Doom where you get the chainsaw, it's surrounded by windows, and there are hillsides outside. It was such a great addition when you we're used to Wolfensteins claustrophobic mazes.
Although I was born in 94, I grew up playing Doom 1 ,2 and Wolfenstein. One thing I loved to do in doom was to try and get the imps to shoot the shotgunners or vice versa, as they would fight with each other. I think that is pretty impressive design for its time.
TheSuperCanuck It's just complicated enough to not be given to you, causing you to explore a bit, and it's not too complicated to get completely lost. When you load up the game, you know exactly where to go and what to do.
+Bucky•JaKRBT I would've loved to have seen 80's/90's Kurt Russell play Solid Snake in a movie. That, or Wolverine. The badass, gravelly voice would've been perfect for him.
I actually just started playing this series because James kept mentioning it. I'm working through the Doom Classic Complete on PS3. I'm really enjoying it. The relative simplicity compared to FPS today is honestly one of the most appealing factors. Also started other series like Castlevania and Mega Man, because he kept mentioning them. It's cool to go back in time.
+LtLokiKCJ I'm in the minority in that i actually really like the DOOM movie, it didn't bother me that much that they didnt go with the hell aspect it felt more influenced by Doom 3 with all the experimetns and all . The special effects on the creatures was awesome and Karl Urban is a great doom guy imo.
In the Doom movie The Rock essentially plays the role of Sarge from Doom 3, since the 2 are kinda tied together. There is a bunch of parallel characters in the both of them.
I went from terrified to desensitized with this game. it seriously gave me nightmares as a kid. I'm glad my dad played this for me when I got too scared
you guys seriously need to play fuckin' Brutal Doom with a mouse and keyboard, the way it's meant to be played. That thing takes Doom to the next level, it's absolutely incredible and will blow James' ass off. Possibly literally.
I'd love to see 3D because that gave us teh character that we all know and love, Duke is just an amalgamation of all the 80s action heroes which is where he gets most of his quotes from. If you look at him that way which honestly is the way you're supposed to, it works a lot better.
The Angry Video Game Nerd is a video gaming legend. He deserves to have over 2,000,000 subscribers because of all of the hard work that he has put into bringing entertainment into people's lives on RUclips for 10 years. "Doom" is an underrated Karl Urban movie just like "Dredd".
I remember playing Doom in like 97ish when I was like 6. It was my dad's game and he turned off the monsters when I played. I played that game so much. I learnt those levels like the back of my hand. I liked blowing up barrels and shooting the guns, but you can't beat it without monsters, because the last level is that going arena. so I figured out how to turn the monsters, and sleepy built up the bravery to actually play with monsters on. After daily Doom training regime of an hour a day, always while watching growing pains for some reason I finally beat it on easy. And than my dad taught me about cheat codes and I made that game my bitch.
I disagree,Sure the SNES version was limited on graphics due to 16-bits however the music, gameplay, and overall experience weighs over the 32x version. Despite all of that, Doom 64 and the original Doom is my all time favourite Dooms.
Apparently, The cannon story is that the demon at the end of Wolfenstein RPG is a Pre Cyber demon who loses his leg and other limbs to BJ. Hence, Why The cyber demon always has a limp
+QShaque dunno if youre talking about another doom movie but doom 2005 HAD the rock as main character. And i feel like thats not a shame, dwayne johnson is a great actor for these sort of movie, it was just the script that sucked
Way back, Ultra Violence was too overwhelming. But, after years of playing games, I challenged myself to beat each Doom level from a pistol start , UV, and without dying. I did it. And it made me feel like it was the way the game should be played. Because the devs handed out weapons, ammo and health in a strategic way. Brute forcing your way through the level was not an option. Nowadays, UV isn’t hard. In fact, if I allow myself to keep weapons between levels, it’s actually relaxing to play through, and I can feel like a badass.
Doom was cleaning out all the demons on the Moon, Doom II was when Doomguy went to hell to finish the job as revenge for killing his rabbit in the end of Doom.
Yeah...I think the kids weren't laughing at James, they likely were laughing at his school teacher if the person was transposing planetary bodies. Phobos and Deimos are Martian moons.
Played this a year ago with GZDooM, and an old copy of 1.2 on a memory stick, transferred over the years. Was nice playing it again. Being 1.2, there was no "Thy Flesh Consumed" (Had the patch installed back in the day, but somehow lost it), and the computer room in E1M4 next to the exit had the crooked cross ("Swastika"). Uploaded videos of it as well.
Captain6313 Yes, the wolfenstein levels are censored to allow a german release. There are no swasticas or actual Wolfenstein enemies. There are a few other edits you can read on the wiki
I agree that I think the Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past was the greatest game of all time. Elements came together at the right place and right time to make that game what it was. I was about 10 years old when it came out. I think you had to be there when it came out, and possibly be around that age, to really understand this. The storytelling, emotions, challenge, graphics, music and experience was like non-other. I haven't felt that strongly about a game before or since and I've played many games over the years across many systems. Nothing touches that one. Great work guys. I look forward to these videos every Monday.
@Stefano Pavone yeah, but that was according to science books printed out in the 1970s. We've discovered more in more recent years...that and I think new ones are being pulled into orbit...it's a giant planet after.
When I come back to this video, i ask myself "why didn't they play 2 player split screen on DOOM 1 & 2? With the BFG edition, you can play 2 players. That would have been really fun to watch.
Duke Nukem 3D is my favorite "Damn! Those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride!" I used to make my own levels with the Build engine and play my friends over dial-up. One-sided walls for the win! I credit that game for fostering my life-long obsession with game design. The Build engine was so sweet.

Great video James! Keep up the fantastic work and also I really love the James & Mike Mondays series although I wish it would be all week but then I guess you couldn't call it James & Mike Mondays :P
''When Playing Doom, My favorite game is Doom'' This is so true !
That is quite stupid... but since is Mike, it sounds cool as shit.
"I'm only an alcoholic when I'm drunk"
+Seawolf Gaming lol.
Doom is so much fun, everyone forgets it's their favorite game
DOOM II but it's close
"When I'm playing Doom, my favorite game is Doom."
same here
DOOM IS ETERNAL!!!
Every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes
I would like but it's on 69 likes
If a piece of electronics has a computer chip in it, someone probably tried to make Doom run on it.
+Martin Drkoš And most likely it worked! i play Brutal Doom in my microwave!
i've played doom on a pi
TI 85 calculator
Everyone probably knows this but someone played doom on a pregnancy test
Played doom on my vacuum cleaner
I love how the game still doesn't feel old.
It's still as awesome as it was before.
Even better. Much better. : >
I played this so much back in the day I had pixelated dreams, no kiddn'.
thats cool buddy. hey! why dont you tell me something else personal.
WOW MIKE! The original box with dos 6.2 floppy discs! Oh man I remember how slow this ran on my Nans x386 lol. Totally agree too, that box cover is my fave of all time also.

+Cinemassacre I was surprised to find out you were born in 1980. You look like you're about 24 or 25, so yeah.
+Cinemassacre Mike, get Ryan to set up the Brutal Doom mod for you guys to play.
+Cinemassacre you guys looking forward to the new Doom game coming out?
Armageddon3035 I sure am. I won't be buying it any time soon since I'm in the process of moving from Oklahoma to California, but I'll buy a copy one day I assure you.
I used to play Doom on PC and I would roll backwards away from the monitor in my office chair while trying to dodge the fireballs the brown monsters shoot. My Dad would laugh that I was that into the game that I would physically try to dodge them.
Same here I know the cheat code for the chainsaw as well the secret areas in every level👻
Like leaving left and right in racing games. Haha
I started doing that while playing Plutonia with the Revenant's fireballs.
Map 32 still gives me flashbacks, horrible horrible flashbacks...
One of my favourite videogame memories as a kid was coming home from school on a Friday, booting up Doom II, turning down the music and turning up the sound effects and just blasting "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette and just going to town on monsters until the sun went down.

I'm so glad you guys are playing Doom games. Takes me "back to the past."
Doom is one of the Godfathers of First Person Shooters.
Shame its level design sucks.
+TheSuperCanuck The level design is amazing...
+TheSuperCanuck Silence peasant.
+nathaniel malmrose It's a fucking maze. That's not amazing.

It's just complicated enough to not be given to you, causing you to explore a bit, and it's not too complicated to get completely lost. When you load up the game, you know exactly where to go and what to do.
Original Doom is still one of the best games ever.
Love og doom
With San Andreas
I actually don't like the new ones that much. It's too frantic
Karl Urban was DoomGuy in the movie, not the Rwak.
But if there was ever a better fit for DoomGuy is Kurt Russell in the movie Soldier.
KARL Urban, not Kyle
+Bucky•JaKRBT I would've loved to have seen 80's/90's Kurt Russell play Solid Snake in a movie.
That, or Wolverine. The badass, gravelly voice would've been perfect for him.
+travistotle Ever see Escape for New York/L.A.?
Joe Digger
oops :D
Bucky•JaKRBT
Kurt WAS Snake in those movies
The Rock was one of the marines in the film but technically it was Karl Urban who was the protagonist of the Doom film
Awesome stuff. Lots of memories here!
Doom is seriously like the best game ever made. I've probably played all of Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 a hundred times.
The sounds effects in DOOM are legendary. The boom of the double-barreled shotgun in DOOM 2 has been unmatched for decades.
Actually, The rock wasn't the Doom guy in the movie. It was Karl Urban. And phobos and Deimos are the moon of Mars, not Jupiter :p
Ikr? I said that too...but you beat be by 3 years...but I just watched it. Man, I'm late. Thank you RUclips suggested videos!
I like how James asked if mike ever got scared playing this game as a kid and mike never answer, to personal
It wasn't The Rock who played the Doom soldier, it was Karl Urban.
Tbh Doom and Doom II have aged very well, still looks gorgeous in its simplicity. :)
+MuppetLord1 Still one of the best co-op FPS games too!
If there is any game that's meant to be played on PC it's Doom.
That iconic music....there's something about those beats that sparks the action, both on the screen and in the player. Great review!
The doom series is my favorite of all time. My favorite youtubers playing my favorite games. Hell yeah!
The Rock didn't play The Marine from doom. Dwayne Johnson was just a monster. Karl Urban played the Marine. :)
+Xearrik Gaming Channel There was no Doom movie...there just...there wasnt....
Ahhh nostaligia at its greatest :) glad you finally decided to play this epic PC shooter
6:15 Ah yes, Doom Vision. I think that's a fairly common condition in gamers who grew up in the 90s. lol
It's cool to go back in time.
i'm fairly certain karl urban was supposed to be doomguy. whereas the rock was a demon sarge.
+LtLokiKCJ Correct.
you are correct
+LtLokiKCJ I'm in the minority in that i actually really like the DOOM movie, it didn't bother me that much that they didnt go with the hell aspect it felt more influenced by Doom 3 with all the experimetns and all . The special effects on the creatures was awesome and Karl Urban is a great doom guy imo.
+Cab
I prefer Bruce Willis in Planet Terror.
+LtLokiKCJ Right you are.
I'd love to see them play more Doom, then Doom 2 and then Doom 3.
For the love of god turn up the look sensitivity.
In the Doom movie The Rock essentially plays the role of Sarge from Doom 3, since the 2 are kinda tied together. There is a bunch of parallel characters in the both of them.
and Karl Urban was the Doomguy
"Hmmm, that's one Doomed space marine"- Duke Nukem
+DepriverOfSouls
"Shake it, baby!" - Caleb poking Dunke Nukem's dead body in Blood
ahhh the nostalgia of being desensitized as a young kid in the 90s
Including those four sets of 3.5 floppy disks, which took a long installation time!
I went from terrified to desensitized with this game. it seriously gave me nightmares as a kid. I'm glad my dad played this for me when I got too scared
wow...18 minutes into monday and this video is posted. on point.
+Jay Amin Here in California it's not even Monday yet.
still Sunday here, feel like I get early access lol
you guys seriously need to play fuckin' Brutal Doom with a mouse and keyboard, the way it's meant to be played. That thing takes Doom to the next level, it's absolutely incredible and will blow James' ass off. Possibly literally.
4:21 "it´s a great game to play it, by yourself...late at night, turn the light off...." (soft voice)
insert BRAZZER logo here
my job here is done then... you are welcome
When a Imp die, is the sound of a camel yelling, ok :P
In Soviet Russia, Imp kills you.
But why do they sound like frogs sometimes?
Dwayne Johnson is playing the bad guy in the movie. The good guy (doom player) is Karl Urban.
Painful watching them try to turn with a controller.
+Arm4g3dd0nX maddening.
+Arm4g3dd0nX Yep. Pretty much all the movement seems really clunky and imprecise.
+Purgebringer Actually, you can use the mouse to turn, even in old-timey doom from 93. It's even the recommanded setting in the manual. Check it out.
they can just hold LT and they'd run/turn faster.. :/ but it didn't seem that they had known. (except for sprint)
+Purgebringer i remember having to turn with the numpad like an ANIMAL. (the arrow keys were used to move since this was before they invented WASD)
The Rock was not the Doom guy. He mutated into the boss. Karl Urban was the Doom guy.
It still holds up to this day. THats why it is a classic.
9:47 It sounds like King Diamond - Bye Bye, Missy a bit...
One of my favorite FPS!
+SupaBeccaPeach new name!?
+Captain Planet I had to change it to get verified on RUclips in the future. :/
It's a classic.
The Rock didn't play the main guy in the Doom film. The Rock ended up being the villain.
Who gives a fuck? The movie was a pile of shit
the guy kinda looks like charlie heston not the rock
You guys should play Duke Nukem
3d. Not forever
I'd love to see 3D because that gave us teh character that we all know and love, Duke is just an amalgamation of all the 80s action heroes which is where he gets most of his quotes from. If you look at him that way which honestly is the way you're supposed to, it works a lot better.
@@metalheadgamer6666 I used to play the old side scrolling duke nukem, it was actually pretty decent for an MS DOS game.

Who plays doom on anything other then ultra violence?
+JRRacing64 Me... Nightmare! >:)
+JRRacing64 Ultra-Violence all the way tho
+Konstantin Demenko
I remember HMP. '98 was a loooong time ago
Me if I am not in god mode
I heard that the developers included the nightmare difficulty as a joke and intended for it to be impossible.

Would you do an Alien Breed 3D II for Amiga video? It was a pretty goof FPS, in my opinion!
The Baron's cry is *scary*..... :( Also, thanks for making this...... :3
Pls play wolfenstein 3d btw love the vids
Over 3,000 comments so not sure if it was said. And its REALLY not important, but Karl Urban was the main protagonist... Not the Rock.
The two moons of Mars* Phobos and Deimos (Horror and Terror).
i would play this at my grandmas on the snes, i was terrified. she had to help me through it a lot haha
“This game is so violent”
Doom (2016): AM I A JOKE TO YOU
The Rock didn't play the doomguy, Karl Urban did. :P
I'd forgotten. The Rock was the villain in that film right?
+TheFireflyGrave pretty much. he turned bad later.
+Alexandria “Alyxx” Thorne Karl plays the rookie from Doom3. The rock plays Sarge from Doom3. The marine would kick both their candy asses.
Luciffrit
Haha, true ;)
I used love playing Quake. The sound track was made by Nine Inch Nails.
i'm down for this entire series
@2:53 - 3:12

The new DOOM is just awesome, it even has retro-levels. I think you should take a look at it.
It is really bad.
+Ruben Hope get out
+Ruben Hope I disagree the gameplay is an adrenaline filled joyride of gore guts and guns. Just like doom is meant to be.
+Ruben Hope um no it's not, you're an idiot. Game is freakin amazing
+Ruben Hope it's pretty great moron
Doom 2 The Movie starring Matt Damon. He needs rescuing again, in space --- again.
it wasnt the rock (movie). it was karl urban. the same from one of my favorite comic movies, Dredd
+quiconjinn he doesn't have a name, it's just "doom guy". this is before story was relevant in fps.
James/Mike: In Brutal Doom you can shoot the Marines on sticks for power ups I.e. The impaled Marines.
i just love how demons turn on each other when they get hit with stray bullet.
Should be playing Brutal Doom on PC. ;)
+Tom B Better yet, Project Brutality!
+Honudes Gai Moon Doom*
HDoom is an adult parody mod for doom.
That I was unaware of, Time for me to check that out.
No ;)

And i feel like thats not a shame, dwayne johnson is a great actor for these sort of movie, it was just the script that sucked
That's Dredd
+Phyrex Im talking about the same film. The Rock was in the movie, but Karl Urban played the doomguy.
You guys need to check out Brutal Doom!
+CaliPatriot88 Nope. Complex DooM. Even BETTER!
You mean "Paint the map red" ;)
You mean Project Brutality.
Same thing
+CaliPatriot88 Uh no, BD is the base, but PB adds so much more.

this is correct
Jojoforpres He was based off of Sarge, from Doom 3.
I'm sorry that's incorrect, you forgot to say umm actually before your reply.
phobos and deibos are the moons of mars .... juipter has like over 60
Yeah...I think the kids weren't laughing at James, they likely were laughing at his school teacher if the person was transposing planetary bodies.
Phobos and Deimos are Martian moons.
79 at last count.....
James makes the best noises when he is wielding the chainsaw. I could watch you two play doom for hours.

The Rock was not Doomguy. That was Karl Urban
John Romero handed legendary game composer Bobby Prince a stack of Metal CD's and said, "Here, write some music like this!" 4:37
The main riff in E1M1 also reminds me of Judas Priest's Painkiller.
Thank you for not using the Brutal Doom mod! I prefer Doom the way it was in 1993.
"The moons of Jupiter, Phobos and Deimos"
I can see I'm wasting my time here.
+MyNameIsBucket same i was like huh?
+MyNameIsBucket He sure learned a lot in school. I can't do algebra and even I know from the Doom games that Phobos and Deimos are the moons of MARS!
Stefano Pavone Jupiter has 79 moons at last count....
@@MabuseXX it probably keeps pulling new ones in all the time from the asteroid belt between it & Mars because of it's great mass.
@Stefano Pavone yeah, but that was according to science books printed out in the 1970s. We've discovered more in more recent years...that and I think new ones are being pulled into orbit...it's a giant planet after.

This is a pretty good game if you ask me.
p.s I'm not the rock.
Karl Urban was the Guy
I'm old enough that I remember how much this game (and Wolfenstein 3D) changed everything and how violent it was considered. Such a great game, I'm playing through it again thanks to GZDoom and Steam!
Basically any time I play Doom, it becomes my favorite game of all time again. Until I pop in Mario World or Symphony of the Night. And then I circle back to Doom.

we want more, we want more!
Great video James! Keep up the fantastic work and also I really love the James & Mike Mondays series although I wish it would be all week but then I guess you couldn't call it James & Mike Mondays :P
Remember how exciting it was in Quake when you could walk around the dead bodies and they didn't rotate with you?
"doom is my favorite game when i play doom" love it, absolutly agree with that XD
