I've been doing sprinklers for 38 years. I agree that the Rainbird DVF valve is one of the best general purpose auto valves. I've also had problems with some of the solenoids-sometimes the gaskets have failed and sometimes they become too tight to turn by hand. Also avoid the Rainbird DV valve.
We use Hunter valves, PGVs, the best, we are in Texas. we have systems installed 15 years ago and the valves are still working great, the solenoids on the rain bird, some don't even last 3 years and if you open them manually, after a few years, they start to leak at the o-ring.
I am not a sprinkler expert, but our home was built in 2007, and is all hunter. We maybe used the sprinkler maybe 7 summers out of the last 15. Most of the summers we just left it winterized and never turned it on. Does age of just sitting in the ground affect the valves or does general use contribute to the most wear and tear.
I have been a pro in the industry for a while. I love the fact that irritrol valves have a jar top style system for replacing the guts quickly. The downside I've seen is that the plastic doesn't hold up nearly as well as the rainbirds and breaks down with UV sun rays.

We always use irritrol 2400s valves, durable, well priced, jar top style makes it extremely easy to swap inner components if anything fails

I agree
What is the difference between the DAS and ASVF valve?

It’s best if the system gets some regular use. I’d say it sitting idle probably would cause more issue than regular use, like a car.
What model rain bird do you prefer for a standard tract home. Don’t want to get a cheap one.
Just the standard DVF anti siphon valve is best.
Have you tried Irritrol valves?
I personally used to use the inline ones a lot.
